Chapter 184 Report

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Tester Life: Day 68, Morning – My Room

 Sanada Yakumo

I woke to the sound of movement and a heavy presence in the living room. I glanced at the clock; it wasn’t even 7:00 AM. Beside me, Koyama Sayaka was still fast asleep, completely naked and looking perfectly content.

Last night, I’d been in the mood for a little “midnight raid,” so we spent the night alone here in my old room. My libido wasn’t an issue – I’d already had my fun on the beach with Karen and Leticia earlier, followed by a session with the Wall-Butt¹. Since it was a surprise visit, I hadn’t given Sayaka a heads-up. I snuck in during the dead of night and took her while she was out cold. She woke up shortly after I’d slid inside, and despite the initial shock, she’d spent the rest of the night moaning in my ear.

Because we’d kept things heated until the early hours, I eased myself out of bed without waking her and cracked the door open. Rock was standing there in full gear.

Maybe it’s because our souls are linked, but I knew it was him the moment I felt that energy. I’d told Rock to head back to the isolated island once he was done assisting the Gozaru-crew Leader². But I’d also told him to come get me if anything went sideways. The fact that Rock was here meant there was trouble.

For the record, my summoned beasts have free rein over the Teleportation arrays and my private room. I guess the system treats them as my property, just like the slaves.

”Did something happen? Did you retrieve Saizou?” I asked.

I led Rock into the living room. His ears were drooping, and he looked dejected. I needed to confirm if Saizou had been recovered. I’d left Saizou on the 4th floor with Rock after yesterday’s scouting as a bit of insurance for the Gozaru-crew. I’d also ordered Rock to go back and fetch Saizou – who had been reverted into a Magic Sealing Crystal – once the crew had cleared the floor. I didn’t want him seen in his physical form while moving him back here.

”Woof!” Rock barked. He pulled the Magic Sealing Crystal from his pouch and handed it over.

”Good. Now, get outside,” I said.

Crystal in hand, I headed out toward the island beach. The morning sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon. No sign of Hanako; she’s usually crashed out in the shed Saizou built. Lucy wasn’t around either, so they were probably together. It was the first night Rock wasn’t around; they probably felt lonely.

I channeled my mana into the crystal to manifest Saizou.

”My will is yours,” Saizou said, kneeling.

”So, you were attacked after all. You certainly went all out, didn’t you?”

Saizou remained with his head bowed. Both his face and his shinobi gear were drenched in blood spray. One look at him told me everything. The Gozaru-crew had been jumped.

”Was it the Trust Fund Group?” I asked.

 ”It was,” Saizou replied.

”I see… Idiots. If you had to intervene despite Rock being there, I assume they targeted the crew during the boss clear?”

 ”Exactly,” Saizou said.

Figures. That’s what I would’ve done. That’s exactly why I had him lurking on the 4th floor.

”Rock, is their Leader okay?” I asked.

 ”Wafun…”

”That reaction… so he’s alive, but not exactly ‘fine’?”

 ”Woof!” Rock confirmed.

Did they have so many casualties they ran out of Grade-4 Potions? That “Gozaru” guild is so broke I had to lend them a Medal of Return, after all.

”Is the Leader still in the plaza?”

 ”Woof!” Rock confirmed.

”What about the Trust Fund Group? Are they back yet?”

 ”Wafun,” Rock shook his head.

 ”Not yet, huh…”

Still, the plaza was going to be in an uproar. There’d probably be another clash once the Trust Fund Group actually showed their faces. I looked back at the living room from the beach. Sheena was there, already in her maid uniform. She must have heard Rock come back. She’d gotten up earlier than usual to start breakfast. Sayaka, Sanae, and Leticia would be up any minute.

”Alright. Rock, head back to the plaza. I’ll be there once I’ve changed.”

Whatever. Since they made it back at this hour, it means the Gozaru-crew passed the guild entrance exam. That makes them my guild members now. I might as well go handle the healing and the mediation.

”Woof!” Rock gave a powerful bark and bolted back into the living room.

Hey – that damn dog didn’t wipe his paws! Now he’s getting a mounting from Sheena.

”Good work, Saizou. I’ll give you a whole box of black candy later.”

”My thanks!” Saizou’s voice was a pitch higher than usual. Since our souls are connected, I could feel his genuine joy. Well, there are 24 bags in a box, after all.

”First, go wash the blood off in the Magic Tent. You know where the spare clothes are, right?”

”Yes,” Saizou replied, and vanished without a sound.

The tent is right in front of you – you could just walk in like a normal person. I watched the fabric of the tent entrance sway, sighed at his theatrics, and headed back inside.

”Master, has something befallen the Gozaru-crew?” Sheena asked.

”Yeah. While Rock was busy with the clear, they were jumped by the Trust Fund Group – those guys we dealt with before.”

”A grudge, then? Are they… safe?”

”Nobody’s dead. But even though Saizou backed them up, it sounds like they took some hits.”

”Did Saizou-san not intervene before the injuries occurred?” Sheena asked, a trace of irritation in her voice.

”I ordered him to only step in if they couldn’t handle it themselves. He followed my orders to the letter. Don’t take it out on him.”

I’d told him to hold back until the last possible second. I wanted to keep his existence a secret, and I wanted the Gozaru-crew to learn how to handle their own mess.

”My apologies,” Sheena said. “It seems I let my emotions get the better of me.”

”Heh. I get it. You’re worried about your students. Don’t sweat it.”

”It is not that,” Sheena corrected. “They are to become members of your guild, Master. I intended to forge them into something that would not bring shame to your name. I cannot do that if they are dead.”

”Haha, fair enough. They seem to want the training, so feel free to go as hard as you like.”

”Indeed. I shall torment – pardon me – train them without mercy,” Sheena said.

”Heh. Try not to kill them.”

As we were talking, Sayaka, Sanae, Leticia, and Karen filtered into the living room.

”Good morning, Master. You’re up early. Did something happen?” Sayaka asked.

Her eyes flicked to my crotch for a split second before she tilted her head. My morning wood was gone. It had been rock hard when I woke up, but seeing Rock’s face had killed the mood. Usually, I’d need a morning b**job or a freezing shower to get it down, but Rock was an effective, if unwelcome, alternative. My “son” clearly didn’t want to get excited for a dog.

”Rock just got back, and I’m worried about the Gozaru-crew,” I explained. “Go wash up. Leticia, get into your gear and come with me. Sounds like they’ve been hurt.”

Leticia and Karen were still half-asleep, so I gave their butts a light swat to hurry them toward the bathroom. Leticia’s eyes snapped wide open.

”The Gozaru-crew?! I’ll be ready in a second!” she shouted.

”Wait, are the seniors okay?” Karen asked.

”Is Koyama and the others safe?” Sayaka added.

”No, they got ambushed by the Trust Fund Group. Saizou stepped in, but they’ve got a lot of wounded.”

 Everyone’s expression soured instantly.

”Manda… a grudge attack?” Sanae muttered. “They’re still salty about getting counter-trained? They really are the lowest of the low.”

”Anyway, Leticia and I are going to check on them,” I said. “Stay inside. If things get messy, I don’t want you guys being used as leverage. Got it?”

 ”Understood, Master,” Sayaka replied.

I headed to the party room to gear up. I threw on my Guard uniform and buckled my sword belt. Sheena joined us, adding a sword belt to her maid outfit. Leticia put on her leotard-style magic armor and her Saint’s robe. She’s the squishiest member; I couldn’t be too careful.

We headed out the front door. Just as I expected, the area around the spring was a makeshift ward. Wounded people were everywhere, washing gashes in the water. The worst of them was the Gozaru Leader. He was shirtless, his right arm and left shoulder shredded. At his feet sat a Greatshield so riddled with holes it was basically scrap metal.

”Yo. You look like hell,” I said, walking up to him.

 ”Ah! The Guard-dono!” he croaked.

”Captain! Sanny stayed on the front lines as our tank until the bitter end!” one of his crew shouted. “He was our shield!”

”We got blindsided by a fireball right at the start,” another added. “He tanked it to protect us, and even after his right side went numb, he didn’t give an inch!”

 ”Oh? Not bad,” I said.

He held off the strongest guy in their group while half-paralyzed? He’d actually grown up.

”You defended your comrades well,” Sheena said. Her face was stoic, but her eyes were soft.

 ”Sheena-dono…” the Leader whispered.

”Leticia, drink this and get to work,” I ordered, handing her a potion. “Focus on his right arm and shoulder first. You can do five casts.”

”Got it! I’m gonna fix you up! ‘Heal!’ ‘Heal!’ ‘Heal!’” Leticia cried.

She downed the Mana Recovery Potion and started spamming her spell. The gashes on his shoulder began to knit together. By the fifth cast, his shoulder was closed and he could move his arm again.

”Whoa! My wounds are gone-degozaru! Thank you, Princess-degozaru!” the Leader shouted.

”No way! Heal works even during the Potion interval?!” someone yelled.

 ”She’s a Saint… Saint Leticia is born!”

”Hehe! There isn’t a wound I can’t fix!” Leticia beamed.

”Leticia, how’s your mana?” I asked.

”Still about half. Did I rank up?”

”Probably. You can do ten casts at E-Rank. Yesterday’s grind must have pushed you over.”

”Okay! I’m gonna go heal the others!” Leticia ran off, grinning.

Sheena and I caught each other’s eye and shared a small smile. Now, time to get the full story. And then, we deal with the Trust Fund Group.

 —

 Summary:

Yakumo is woken by Rock, who reports a violent ambush on the Gozaru-crew by the Trust Fund Group. Saizou intervenes to save them, but several members are badly injured. Yakumo leads Leticia and Sheena to provide medical aid and prepare for a confrontation.

 —

 Trivia:

 - The Gozaru-crew are now official guild members under Yakumo.

 - Leticia has ranked up to E-Rank mana capacity.

 - The Trust Fund Group attacked during the Gozaru-crew’s boss clear attempt.

 - Potions have a 12-hour interval/cooldown during which they don’t work, but ‘Heal’ magic bypasses this.

 - Yakumo previously lent the Gozaru-crew a Medal of Return because they are poor.

 - Saizou manifested with blood on his face, indicating a high-casualty encounter for the attackers

 —

 Character Insight:

The Gozaru Leader shows significant character growth, transitioning from a coward who cried at pinpricks to a tank who protected his comrades despite paralysis. Leticia is beginning to embrace her role as a ‘Saint’ and healer, finding joy in being thanked.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The author uses the ‘Trust Fund Group’ as a recurring antagonist to highlight the disparity between entitled ‘rich’ testers and the gritty, pragmatic approach of Yakumo’s guild.
