Chapter 423 Holy Figure and Saint ②
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”M-may I ask you to repeat that?” Loire-Rose asked. “What exactly did you just say?”
”I said… I wish to be granted permission to love another,” Amelia replied.
The Holy Mother, Loire-Rose¹, looked as though she had just swallowed a lemon. She pressed a hand to her forehead as the gathered crowd erupted into a frantic murmur. Struggling to recover her poise, Loire-Rose pressed further.
”Permission to love someone?”
”Yes. That is my wish,” Amelia said.
”While remaining a nun?”
”…Yes. I realize how selfish that sounds.”
Loire-Rose’s reaction seemed entirely unscripted. Throughout the hall, onlookers exchanged bewildered glances, their expressions clearly asking: ‘Is that even allowed?’
”Regardless,” Loire-Rose continued, “it would go against the very teachings of God.”
”No, that isn’t true,” Amelia countered. “What God forbade was debauchery. Celibacy is a law established by men… by the Church.”
”Be that as it may, those ‘men’ were Holy Figures and Saints² who received God’s grace-“
”-Exactly,” Amelia interrupted. “Which means they were the same as you and I are now.”
Amelia, who revered the divine teachings more than anyone, had clearly thought this through. I watched, wondering where this would lead. I recalled my old world, where similar debates sparked religious reformations.
I was probably just trying to escape reality. After all, unless I was being completely delusional, Amelia was starting this fire specifically for me.
I stood there, paralyzed, unable to do a thing but stare at her. She refused to look back, likely on purpose. Her neck and ears were a burning, vivid crimson.
Beside her, Satsuki, the court mage, shot a sharp glance in my direction. I felt more eyes on me-the Queen, Mother Marian, even Archbishop Trantestar. Their gazes were heavy with a single message: ‘This is your fault. Do something.’ Meanwhile, Prince Roland looked like he wanted to vanish. I felt a pang of guilt; this was a hell of a way to spend his first official duty.
”Let’s… let’s step back,” Loire-Rose stammered. “Why this wish? Do you have a specific partner in mind?”
”Yes,” Amelia whispered.
”I see. Is he… a silver-tongued sort? Someone far too used to handling women?”
”…Yes.”
”Is he prone to constructing strange magic circuits³?”
”…Yes.”
”And despite everything, does he seem like the type who would actually take responsibility?”
”…Yes.”
”I see…”
What is this, a cross-examination? I thought. I didn’t remember telling Loire-Rose about us, but she must have heard it from the Queen or the Archbishop. She had me pegged.
”Personally, I’d like to support you,” Loire-Rose said, her voice lowering. “But this touches the very foundation of the convent…”
”I understand that,” Amelia said.
”Perhaps we could… take this back and discuss it privately?”
”You could,” Amelia replied, “but in that case, my wish will never be granted. There are too many who value tradition above all else.”
”Well… you aren’t wrong.”
The mask is slipping! I thought. The persona of the Holy Mother was practically hanging by a thread.
The crowd’s debate grew louder, a cacophony of conflicting opinions. In response to the tension, the particles of light in the hall flickered violently, mirroring the room’s confusion.
”Look, off the record,” Loire-Rose muttered, “we all know people are… finding ways behind closed doors. Why not just-“
”I will not live a life of broken rules and secrets,” Amelia said firmly.
”Right. Of course not.”
Loire-Rose was falling apart, making statements no Holy Mother should ever utter, but she was too frazzled to care. She buried her head in her hands again.
”I am sorry for the confusion,” Amelia said, closing her eyes. “I will abide by whatever judgment you pass.”
She stood tall, like a martyr awaiting a sentence. Loire-Rose let out a pained groan. “You can’t just drop this on me out of nowhere…”
Amelia wanted a favor, but Loire-Rose didn’t want to offend the traditionalists. She was stuck between her debt to Amelia, her fear of the elders, and her own desire to support a girl in love. She looked around desperately, searching for an exit.
Finally, Kushe, the court mage kneeling beside Amelia, spoke up.
”Can we wrap this up? My knees are killing me.”
”Kushe! Show some respect!” Satsuki hissed.
But Kushe wasn’t finished. “We haven’t even talked about the most important part yet. Tell her about the ‘Holy Sleep’⁴.”
”Wait… no, we shouldn’t…” Satsuki stammered.
”I think it’s a beautiful story,” Kushe continued. “The idea that a Saint was called back from the edge of death by the power of her love.”
”…Was it really that poetic?” Satsuki muttered.
Kushe’s voice rang out clearly across the hall.
”Would you care to elaborate?” Loire-Rose asked.
”It’s simple, Your Holiness,” Kushe said. “When Amelia fell into her slumber, we tried everything to wake her. Nothing worked. She was a statue.”
”Kushe-san, please!” Amelia cried.
”Hush, Amelia. I’m telling it nicely. I told her: ‘Wake up, and Kento will do anything for you’.”
Wait, ‘anything’? Now wasn’t the time to worry about the fine print. Most of the crowd didn’t know who ‘Kento’ was, but every VIP in the room-including Loire-Rose-immediately looked at me. The secret was out.
A thick, awkward tension filled the Great Cathedral. Amelia looked like she was about to spontaneously combust.
”And Satsuki,” Kushe prodded, “what did you whisper?”
”I-I just said… ‘This time, make sure he puts a ring on your left ring finger’!”
A few people in the crowd groaned knowingly. Loire-Rose tilted her head.
”A ring? What does that signify?”
”It’s a custom from Kento’s world,” Amelia whispered. “To give a ring to the one you love. To wear it on the left ring finger is a vow-a sign that you have someone you love.”
”I see… and the ring you are wearing now…?”
”Ah… um… yes.”
There was no turning back. I realized then how hard Amelia had fought, and how much she was risking for my sake. If I didn’t respond to that kind of devotion, I wasn’t a man. I raised my hand, fighting to keep my fingers from trembling.
”Your Holiness? May I speak?”
”Lord Harvest… speak.”
”I only ask this: that you bless what I am about to do. Only if you feel it is the right thing to do.”

TL Notes:
Notes:
• Loire-Rose – The current Saintess—supreme leader of the Great Cathedral with a divine look (white hair, pale skin, blue eyes) and holy powers like manifesting light and blessings. Her modern, playful irreverence clashes with church norms, though she struggles to keep her composed “mask” under pressure.
• Amelia – A light blue-haired Sister of the Church of Demon-Subjugating and Kento’s shy harem member. A newly awakened “Saint” from Holy Sleep, modest and easily embarrassed with red ears and neck. Wears her habit and treasures Kento’s ring on a necklace.
• Trantestar – The middle-aged man Archbishop of Canarias and the initiator of the current trial. He is an alleged ally of Kento but remains suspiciously neutral.
• Satsuki – Miranda’s granddaughter—a talented court mage with long black hair, staff, and palace robes. Prickly tsundere companion of Kento who fought in the dragon subjugation. Now humiliated yet fulfilled as Harvest’s new worker, her research thrives under his guidance while she whispers romantic tips to Amelia.
• Marian – A ‘Mother’ and supervisor from the Church of Demon-Subjugation. Her appearance and demeanor defy the Church’s purported ‘chastity,’ instead she has wavy purple long hair, busty, black nun, tear mole under eye, and monroe walk. She has arrived with a clear purpose: to confront Kento about the ‘Devil’s Stick.
• Roland – he younger brother of Queen Cecile and the heir apparent to the Canaria throne. Clean, golden-blonde hair, same color as the Queen, innocent, beautiful face that could be mistaken for a girl but dressed in a boy’s formal wear.
• Kushe – Chief Mage of the Coalmine Kingdom—a blunt, mischievous court mage and Kento’s companion. Dark green hair worn haphazardly under a loose robe, she’s assertive, knee-complaining, and leaks secrets to push things forward.
• Kento – Lord Harvest—the unassuming owner of the Harvest magic tool shop (with a discreet adult goods side). An isekai’d Japanese salaryman resembling Kazuma Satou, with dark hair and basic magic for crafting. Recently triumphed over a Great Dragon; now juggles his harem, tinkering, and ties to Amelia and the Queen at Ddo-Buddy Manor.
