Chapter 190 Interlude꞉ Scary Stories

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 This is another summer classic. Timeline-wise, this takes place before we headed to Wrath-fury Ria¹, right after Chihiro became Mihiro and we finished our trip to the beach.

 ===

 ”Master, let’s tell scary stories!”

 With only a few days left before our departure and the heat still stifling, Honoka blurted out something totally out of left field.

 ”I mean, it’s hot every day. The beach was great, but I thought we could beat the heat with some shivers. Is that no good?”

 Ah, I see. When you think of summer traditions, ghost stories are right up there with the ocean and fireworks.

 ”I don’t mind. But I don’t really know many,” I said.

 Ever since coming to this world, “ghosts” are just standard monsters. My fear of the paranormal has basically evaporated. As for stories from back home, I only know the clichés.

 ”Then how about ‘physically’ scary stories too?” Honoka asked.

 ”Hmm…”

 I rested my chin in my hand. If that’s the deal, I have one. A trauma from my childhood.

 ”Fine. But nothing extreme like a ‘Hundred Candles’ ritual²,” I warned.

 ”I won’t go that far! But I wonder… do weird things happen in this world too if you try it?” Honoka wondered aloud.

 …Wait, has she actually tried it before?!

* * *

 Gathered in my bedroom that night were Honoka, Reese, the Tate-Yoko duo, Sango, and Lil. Aside from Lil, it was the “Teleportation Group.” Mihiro – formerly Chihiro – hates scary stories and opted out immediately.

 ”I’m surprised you two joined,” I said to the duo.

 ”It is not a personal experience, but this humble one has a tale to tell, de-gozaru. One of the physically terrifying variety,” Tatei said.

 ”I-I’m not sure if mine counts as scary, y’know,” Yokoo added.

 ”You’ve had an experience like that, Yoko?” Reese asked.

 I agreed with her. It was a surprise.

 ”Ma-kun actually has these ‘mysterious experiences’ sometimes. It’s a bit of a thing,” Sango explained.

 I’d known Yokoo since high school, but he never mentioned it. Apparently, Tatei has no spiritual sensitivity, so he only has “physical” horror. Mine was more about visual disgust.

 ”What about you two?” I asked Reese and Sango.

 ”Only ‘friend of a friend’³ stuff. Urban legends,” Reese said.

 ”Same here,” Sango agreed.

 Lil, snuggling up to my left, was full of anticipation. She was so close she was practically clinging to me.

 ”Rules first,” Honoka interjected. “Spiritual or physical, it has to be from our old world. Lil-san, you’re the listener.”

 ”Understood!” Lil chirped.

 ”Alright, I’ll start,” Honoka said.

* * *

 ”This happened on the way home from Manabu School. I stopped by a shopping street. It was dark, and there was a man standing in front of a diner. He just… walked right inside. You’re thinking, ‘So what?’ right? But that diner was sealed. The entrance was taped off with yellow police tape. The shopkeeper had been murdered there a few days before. So, who was that man…?”

 ”Eek! So scary!” Lil cried, clinging to me. Her voice was totally flat. She looked thrilled. Honoka gave her a thumbs-up.

 ”Is that for real?” Tatei asked.

 ”Dead serious,” Honoka replied.

 ”Next is me,” Reese said. She told the story of ‘Monkey Dream.’ Naturally, Lil used it as another excuse to cling to me.

 ”This humble one shall go,” Tatei said. “My uncle is a security guard. During a festival, he was posted in a dark alley. Suddenly, two lights charged at him. He dove out of the way just as a car tore past, followed by police sirens. If he’d been a second slower, he would’ve been killed by that drunk driver.”

 ”T-That’s actually terrifying,” I muttered. Everyone turned pale.

 ”Then, it’s my turn, y’know,” Yokoo said. “I was walking in the heat and saw a girl peeking from a tree. She had a bob cut and white skin, but no eyeballs – just black pits. I rubbed my eyes, and she was gone. I figured it was heatstroke, y’know. But right next to that tree was an abandoned grave.”

 ”You probably did have heatstroke,” I said.

 ”Summer heat is terrifying,” Honoka added. “We need to stay hydrated. Maybe Master’s… fluids would work?”

 ”Honoka… you’re a freak,” Reese sighed.

 ”My turn,” Sango said. “There’s a story called Hasshaku-sama…”

 ”Oh, the eight-foot-tall lady in the sundress who’s a total shota-con, goes ‘po… po…’ and kidnaps little boys, right?” I interrupted.

 ”Master! You ruined it!” Sango cried.

* * *

 ”Okay, my turn,” I said. “This is from kindergarten. It was raining during a field trip. We got off the bus and had to walk to the site. But the entire road was covered. There were thousands of them – blue-purple (Siebold) earthworms, a foot long, squelching and writhing so thick there was nowhere to step.”

 ”Stop! That’s just gross!” Honoka shrieked, recoiling.

 The stories continued late into the night.

 ”So, did we ‘beat the heat’?” I asked.

 ”I don’t know, but I’m too scared to sleep alone. Master, let me stay with you,” Honoka pleaded.

 In the end, everyone except Reese paired up to sleep. Groans of a very different nature echoed from the rooms that night.

* * *

 Actually, every story told here is a true story I’ve experienced myself. The story about the earthworms is still a trauma for me.

 Gih-ren: “My brother Garma’s works have been buried! Why?!”

 Char: “Because he was a spoiled brat (and didn’t get any evaluation points).”
