Volume 4 Chapter 113 New Companions ①

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”Get lost, you traitor!”

 ”Death to Balinars!”

 Whiz!

A stone thrown from the crowd grazed the side of Balinars’s face. Because the sun was setting directly behind the mob, the blinding glare left the General and his men unable to react in time. The square erupted like a disturbed hornet’s nest at the arrival of the man who was essentially the face of their defeat.

”Everyone, wait! Stay calm!” Princess Guria cried.

”Princess!? Dammit, stop! Don’t use attack magic!” Balinars barked. “If you hit a civilian, we’ll never regain control of this city!”

”Balinars, this isn’t a riot,” Guria said firmly. “We were simply discussing the future of Crete.”

 ”You were doing what?”

Guria stepped out to face the people. Seeing her, the members of the Lightning Knight Order moved away from Balinars’s side to help maintain the perimeter, keeping the angry citizens at bay. Balinars and his guards were forced to retreat toward the road leading to the palace.

”Everyone, settle down!” Guildmaster Michelangelo¹ of the Merchant Guild climbed past the young knights and stood tall. “Violence won’t solve this! We need a dialogue first. General Balinars, I have a question for you!”

”What is it?” the General snapped.

”The massacre on Cyclops Island – Meimei and Ms. Eugenia claim your spies reported there were no traps. Is that true?”

”That is… classified,” Balinars forced the words through a tight throat, retreating into the shadows of the nearby buildings. “It’s a matter of national security. I cannot answer!”

He couldn’t deny it. Several elite knights in the square knew the truth as well as Meimei did. While the ultimate blame for the failed charge lay with Scipio, the General’s intelligence failure was the spark that lit the fire. To the soldiers who had been there, Balinars was the man who had sent their friends to their deaths.

He had tried to bury the responsibility under layers of bureaucracy, but one wrong word would detonate this crowd. Balinars’s face twisted with the effort of maintaining his facade.

 ”Classified!?”

”National security? Give us a real excuse, you sellout!”

”Why am I the traitor here!?” Balinars roared.

”Because the one who sent instructions to the scout unit captains, and accumulated information to summarize into documents to submit to Sir Scipio was General Balinars~desuwa!”²

Eugenia screamed from the front line. “Because of you! Because of you, My daughter jumped into the place of death! Know shame, traitor! Give me back my daughter!”

”Silence! Any further disruption will be treated as a threat to public order!” Balinars turned to his troops. “Lightning Knight Order! Deploy barriers! Isolate them before they start throwing more than stones!”

”Everyone, stop it!” Guria’s voice turned shrill.

Balinars swung around to face her. “Princess, disperse this crowd immediately! This isn’t a meeting – it’s an insurrection! It’s dangerous!”

”The only thing dangerous here is you, Balinars!” Guria shouted back. “We were having a peaceful discussion until you showed up! The Knights and I will handle things here. Go back to the castle and leave us be!”

”I’m afraid I can’t do that.” Balinars’s expression curdled into something predatory. “This is a matter of security. Disperse now, or I will be forced to take action!”

”Balinars… if you’re going to play the hardliner, perhaps you should start by answering the people’s questions nmo.”³

”…! Tsk, Asterios. You’re still lurking about?”

Kian deactivated his stealth, appearing like a ghost exactly between the mob and the General’s men.

”Merchant Guild Chief Michelangelo is asking who it was that conveyed the incorrect information to Scipio. In response to that, you said you couldn’t answer because it’s a military secret. However, this is a strange story nmo.”

 ”Ah!?”

”Military secrets are considered matters kept secret because if leaked to others without a duty of confidentiality, one’s own country’s army would be significantly disadvantaged, or there’s a possibility that military discipline would be significantly disrupted. Is it not so nmo?”

”So what if it is!” a man from the guard yelled as if snapping.

Perhaps having caught up from behind, Tiegel popped his face out behind Balinars’s cape.

”If we surrender and the Crete army is effectively disbanded, can answering the choice between whether the war criminal of the previous defeat is Balinars or not be called a ‘military secret’? Tiegel! How do you recognize it? In the previous battle, who was it that gave the final report to Scipio that there were no traps on Cyclops Island, Balinars or not?”

 ”……”

Tiegel tried to look away, his mouth hanging open in a silent, suffocating stutter.

”Answer him! Don’t run from responsibility!”

 ”That’s right, don’t run, Tiegel!”

”Explain yourself, Tiegel! Whose side are you on, Balinars’s or ours!?”

 ”That is… I… I cannot answer…”

At the middle-aged tiger beastman’s answer, the citizens’ anger exploded all at once. Kian made his voice resonate like roaring thunder, as if representing the people behind him.

”Tiegel! Your wife might be torn to pieces by the citizens in the near future! Your cute daughter too! Prepare yourself, you traitor! Everyone, the Tiegel family are traitors just like Balinars nmo! Well, he’s a dirty guy who raised the status of his house by scattering money around! People who give bribes are, as a whole, scum nmo!”

 ”Scum!”

”To hell with you, Tiegel! Be taken away to Hades!”

”Your wife and daughter! I’ll r**e them and then kill them!”

 ”────!”

The tiger beastman turned ashen. He shot a frightened glance at Balinars before diving back into the ranks of the guards and fleeing toward the palace.

”General Balinars,” Michelangelo stepped forward, his voice cold as ice. “Do you still consider yourself a man of Crete? If so, sign the diplomatic papers for the Gensou. We will deliver them ourselves.”

”The terms of surrender… are still being negotiated. I cannot give you an answer yet.”

”You can’t answer anything, can you?” Michelangelo’s voice was cold. “No explanations. Just orders to shut up and stay in our pens like livestock. Is that what we are to you? Cattle?”

”Of course not! You all are… precious citizens.”

”Then what about the poll tax? Half the people in this city won’t survive the winter if they have to pay it.”

”They can convert to Azraelism,” Balinars said, his tone turning preachy. “The tax only applies to the unfaithful. It’s a trial of your devotion. Zeus is testing your level of devotion. This is a trial. Each of you, if you truly believe in God, choose the path of hardship yourself. If your will is not that strong, take the practical benefit. That’s all there is to it.”

”Is faith measured in coin now?” Shark asked, his voice muffled by the bucket on his head. “And it’s a bit rich for you to call this a ‘trial’ when you’re the one enforcing the Gensou’s taxes, Mr. Provisional Director – (it’s just a plan) – that’s what you’re trying to be…”

”Watch your tone, Shark! I’m, I’m going to be your boss soon! The rest of you too!”

 ”We’re the Princess’s direct Imperial Guard~desuwa!”

”We don’t take orders from you. Especially not now. Since the Captain and Vice-Captain are gone, we follow the Princess’s orders.”

”Actually, being lumped in with the guard makes my skin crawl!”

 ”…Da…mn it!”

”Withdraw, Balinars,” Guria said, her voice echoing with newfound authority. “Don’t think for a second you can suppress us with force.”

 ”……!”

”Withdraw. Leave us alone already! After everyone discusses and a conclusion is reached, I will go to tell you. I am also aware of the five-day time limit. Before the deadline comes, I will wrap up the debate.”

Guria turned back to everyone. “Everyone, violence is no good. We don’t have time, so let’s discuss calmly? Regarding Tiegel too, since we don’t know if he’s a bad guy or not, don’t blame him too much.”

The boiling populace subsides slightly. Guria walked up to Kian with brisk steps and whispered in a small voice with her eyebrows raised.

”What are you intending? Amora is in danger, isn’t she!”

”Siberia Tiegel is sharp. He’s a guy who can scatter money to the citizens and work to break up the unity from the inside. It was necessary to threaten him first to make him unable to move.”

 ”────!”

”With this, the recognition that bribes are evil and those who receive them are traitors will have been seared into the people of Crete to some extent. You should debate to your heart’s content now.”

”…Kian, the way I look at you might have changed a little.”

 ”Are you disillusioned?”

”No.” Guria shook her head with a serious face. “You are a wonderful Knight. That doesn’t change. But… you’re not just kind. I felt like I got a glimpse of part of the reason why you were able to eliminate strong enemies and become a hero until now.”

”That’s a subtle evaluation. Well, whatever.” Kian shrugged his shoulders.

On the other hand, Balinars was in a state where he couldn’t do anything anymore. He glared sharply at Kian.

”I understand, I will withdraw for now. But! Princess, I would like you to stop leaving that bull General there on the loose forever! He seems calm now, but it’ll be dangerous if he throws a tantrum (kanshaku), right?”

”Does that mean if I (Ore-sama) go back to the Kian merchant guild, you won’t even keep the guard on watch nmo?”

”Well… that’s right.” He spits it out with a face like he had completely chewed and crushed a bitter insect.

Kian turned to the girls. “Meimei, Eu, Shark, Caesar. I leave Guria to you. Everyone, support her nmo.”

”Even if you don’t say it, we will protect her~desuwa!”

”I mean, you left behind a ridiculous blast bomb. Amora is in super danger.”

”I’m telling you, there wasn’t going to be an attack-nmo! In the first place, it’s Tiegel’s fault for trying to roll over and surrender on such shitty terms-nmo. Considering the possibility that he was selling us out, I had no choice but to rile them up like that-nmo!”

Kian threw out those excuses, but the girls’ glares only grew colder. It seemed his time was up. Well, he could probably leave the rest to them and it would turn out fine.

”Michelangelo-san, the deadline is five days,” Kian said. “Take the time you need to persuade the Balinars, but reach a conclusion as quickly as possible-nmo.”

”I understand,” Michelangelo replied. “General… you really were a hero to this country.”

”Not really,” Kian muttered. “I’m just a talking bull-nmo.”

”When it comes time to fight, give Azrael death! Please, General!” a lady cried out.

”My nameless lady… you’re a bit too bloodthirsty-nmo,” Kian said.

Kian watched until the Balinars had disappeared across the bridge of Kyujo Palace, then he waved to the crowd. “Bye-bye-nmooo!”

Only Guria and Michelangelo waved back, leaving Kian with a twinge of loneliness.

 ’Kian, can you hear me?’

 (Talia-san, huh? I hear you.)

’Sorry I’m late,’ Talia said via telepathy. ‘I’ve pinpointed the location of Shidarkan’s remains. The Satori spirit has also arrived from Aliona-san. I’ve attached the Chin-Chin to the pier, so return to Grass Island immediately.’

 (Understood.)

’Don’t worry about Amora. If anything happens, I’ll protect her.’

(You were listening?) Kian asked. He felt a strange sense of unease at Talia’s uncharacteristically forward tone.

 ’Yes, she’ll be fine.’

(I see. Are you leaving a familiar or something?)

’I’ll just leave a surveillance golem and provide assistance if necessary. Don’t worry; Siberia Tiegel will play it smart.’

(I have a bad feeling about this. It’s just like what happened with Abbas. I already know what you did, you know.)

’Ah, it looks like the golem’s circuit just shorted out,’ Talia replied quickly. ‘I tried to copy the design of Rufna-san, but I guess I still need more training.’

 (Hey!)

’Anyway, hurry back. General Isthbaran is waiting. So is that murderer you brought home.’

Talia cut the connection abruptly. Kian felt a flicker of anxiety, but he picked up his pace toward the cove where the bird golem acting as the relay was likely perched.

* * *

Rou-san was waiting at the Chin-Chin. He had been on Water Island to gather intelligence and assist Kian, and though he had intended to stay longer, Talia-san had stopped him, claiming it was too dangerous.

After promising to pay Master Huan of the gambling house to send a messenger bird if anything went south, the two of them set off for Grass Island.

”It all comes down to how much of Shidarkan’s personality we can actually reproduce,” Rou muttered.

Since they would be departing for Cyclops Island the moment they arrived, Kian shifted back into his original Azrael form and began cleaning himself. Rou watched him intently.

”Talia didn’t say what condition the body was in,” Kian said. “Perhaps her clairvoyance couldn’t penetrate that far.”

”If the brain is badly damaged, will it affect his personality?” Rou asked.

Kian scrubbed his armpits vigorously with an alcohol-soaked cloth, repeating the motion over and over.

”It can,” Kian replied. “That happened with Natra-san. We managed to pull out some of his living memories, but since I didn’t know him well before he died, I can’t say for sure how much of ‘him’ was left.”

”Which lasts longer?” Rou asked. “The long-term memories etched deep into the brain, or the short-term ones?”

 Kian stopped for a moment.

”I think the long-term ones,” Kian said. “When Natra-san was recalling things, he had to think deeply. He used his own logic to stitch memories together into a story. That’s easier with things you’ve known a long time. Short-term memories are harder to associate. Depending on the damage, we might not be able to reconstruct his recent past at all.”

”I see. So as long as we give ‘Shidarkan’ enough time to ‘remember,’ we shouldn’t have many problems,” Rou said.

”I think so. A person’s character is shaped more by their long-term life than recent events. Of course, if someone witnessed the moment Rita assassinated him, we’ll have to do some clever acting. We might have to have the Satori impersonating Shidarkan just say, ‘I don’t know. Lord Kian saved me because our interests aligned.’”

”We could explain it as confusion from the resurrection or trauma from his injuries,” Rou suggested. “That might account for any changes in his speech or personality.”

”Maybe. We’ll have to settle the details with the Satori once we wake it up.”

Kian sniffed his armpits and his groin, checking for any lingering scent of Asterios. Sniff. Sniff. It seemed fine. He didn’t know how difficult the infiltration of Cyclops Island would be, but a bit of mud and grass would be enough to mask his scent from any Beastmen.

”Generally speaking, Satori are dangerous,” Rou said. “I doubt it will just cooperate. It will probably try to use sophistry to strike a deal.”

”Then should we swap it for a weaker spirit?” Kian asked. “Rou, this is about risk. A weak spirit won’t betray us, but it won’t fool the politicians or the General in charge of the Mithril Fleet. But a Satori-the kind your ancestors had to seal away-is a spirit that can actually steal a country.”

”Linca or Ryoma might have known more about that Satori’s past,” Rou muttered with a flash of irritation. “That might have helped us control it. I let my hatred for Ryoma get in the way. That’s a failing on my part.”

Kian realized he had also avoided asking about the Satori because he found Linca’s letters tedious. He needed to be more diligent.

”You looked miserable when Aliona-san told you to see Linca,” Kian said. “I understand avoiding your parents, but do you really hate Linca that much?”

”It’s not that,” Rou replied. “I just no longer have a reason to ask her why she paid for my education at the monastery.”

”Because that was your way of deciding whether to succeed the Tsai family, right? You said if she loved you, you’d owe her, but if not, you had no reason to help them.”

”Yes. If my sister is alive, the Tsai family won’t perish-especially if she’s become something more than human under the Chairman. Besides… you’re planning on adding Linca to your harem, aren’t you, Chairman?”

”Well, yeah,” Kian admitted. “Assuming Ryoma and Hanami-san don’t kill me first.”

”Ha… those two don’t have the strength to refuse Linca anymore. The years have been cruel to them.”

Kian finished changing into a fresh undershirt and pants.

”If you don’t want to see them, you don’t have to,” Kian said.

 ”What?”

”Your parents. Linca. Any of them,” Kian said, not looking at him. “Sharing blood doesn’t mean you owe them your life. If they had no one else, that would be one thing… but if meeting them just makes everyone unhappy, it’s better to stay away.”

 ”Chairman…”

”I’m giving you the choice. We’ll observe them from a distance. If you decide it’s a bad idea, we won’t do the family reunion. You and I can just go find a good drink instead.”

”Thank you,” Rou said with a faint smile. “But I’ve made it a policy not to drink.”

”Something else, then. If you just want to hide away at home, that’s fine too. You don’t have to hang out with me.”

”No,” Rou said, shaking his head. “I want to have a meal with you, Chairman. You’ll have to show me the best places in Izerland.”

”Fine. Maybe I’ll take you to a bar full of handsome guys.”

”Haha, please don’t. If I add any more lovers to the list, someone is going to stab me.” The Eastern youth laughed clearly.

* * *

As soon as they arrived at Grass Island, Talia-san was waiting on the beach with three baskets. They contained the Satori, the Ukuba, and the Conquistador.

The Ukuba was unnaturally quiet. It wasn’t sleep or exhaustion; it was the chilling stillness of a predator watching its prey. It was a level of presence Kian hadn’t seen even in Kitsune, the wisest of his seven spirits.

”Lately, there’s been too much war and not enough rest,” General Isthbaran said, standing up from where he had been eating grilled octopus. He donned his heavy helmet and picked up the greatsword Talia had replicated.

 The Windsong Blade¹⁰.

The holes in the metal were fewer now, making the blade look sturdier.

”I assume you traded some of the sonic capability for durability?” Kian asked. “Does it still have the projectile protection?”

”Of course,” Talia-san replied. “I kept the gale-shroud that nullifies long-range attacks. It’s like giving a spiked club to an ogre.”

”I’ll take your word for it,” Kian said. “It’s quieter now, too-better for stealth. General, I saw you testing it. If you need to go full dragon, don’t worry about the sword. If it gets in the way, ditch it.”

 ”Hmph.”

Talia-san snapped her fingers, summoning two Chin-Chins and several bird golems.

”I’ll stay here with Rou-san and protect the island,” Talia said. “If you need backup, I’ll send it through the golems, but for a stealth mission, I’m leaving it to you two experts.”

 ”Fair enough.”

They needed to retrieve Shidarkan’s body without leaving a trace.

’Do I get a physical form once we return?’ the Ukuba’s voice hissed from inside the cage.

He appeared unexpectedly relaxed, though his brazenness hadn’t faded.

”You want to do it over there?” Kian asked.

”Yeah,” Ukuba said. “I want a body as soon as possible. Besides, ferrying parts one by one via bird would be a massive pain. Just give me enough of a leg to move on, and I’ll get to my seat myself.”

”Fine,” Kian said, his voice cold.

Neither Talia nor Isthbaran spoke against him. Ukuba let out a low, dry chuckle.

”This is the map of Cyclops Island,” Talia said. “The remains of Lord Shidarkan¹¹ are here.”

Under the moonlight, Talia peered at the paper she had spread out. Isthbaran took out a mana lamp and held it over the map. The remains were apparently located on the mountain side of the southern base. A red X had been marked there.

”There is an ancient cavern on the slopes of Gorgon Mountain,” Talia said. “It seems the body is being kept inside to prevent decay. I don’t know what condition the remains are in now, but if you flood them with enough of your factors, the physical side won’t be an issue. You should be able to create a monster with incredible physical abilities.”

”Any guards?” Ukuba asked. “Any women?”

”There are,” Talia said, her voice flat. She pulled several red pins from her palm and tossed them onto the map. They stood upright and began to move on their own. “There are many. Likely the bride candidates brought by the former retainers of Lord Vahid. They are strong, beautiful, and full of magic power. Given where they’re from, there aren’t many pale Western swine among them.”

”Good. I like the dark-skinned ones,” Ukuba said. “When I bury my nose in their hair and take a deep breath, I can smell the parched earth of home. I could never stand the smell of Western women.”

”Ukuba, this is a stealth mission,” Kian said. “Hunt all the women you want, but leave no witnesses.”

”Yeah, yeah. I know,” Ukuba said. “As long as I don’t leave any witnesses, it’s fine, right? I get it.”

”Where should we land?” Isthbaran asked Kian. He spoke as if he hadn’t heard Ukuba at all. He likely hadn’t caught the nuance; Talia and Kian were speaking the Common tongue, but Ukuba had spoken in Azraelic¹².

Kian saw no need to translate and continued the conversation.

”The sea. We’ll go around the right side of Cyclops Island and dive into the water off the south coast-right around here. We’ll swim to shore, then head straight for the ancient cavern. We eliminate everyone we see.”

 ”Understood,” Isthbaran said.

”If you’re going to undergo the incarnation¹³ over there,” Kian said, “don’t do it inside the cavern. Move to a safe location first.”

”I understand,” Ukuba said. “But it’s better to have options. Kid, if we find a good body on the way, let me use that one first. You’re going to let Lord Shidarkan possess that shady priest anyway, aren’t you?”

A priest? Kian thought. He looked at the eight-legged black shadow in the birdcage.

”And if that body is still alive?” Kian asked.

”I’ll kill them,” Ukuba said. “As long as there are no witnesses, it doesn’t matter. Don’t worry, I understand the mission. I’ll help you out until I get Shidarkan’s body. Consider it a favor for killing that eyesore, Asterios.”

Ukuba spoke in a gentle tone, which only made his madness seem more apparent. Kian neither accepted nor rejected the offer. He looked at Isthbaran.

”We’re leaving. I want to be on that shore before dawn.”

 Summary:

General Balinars is confronted by an angry mob and Princess Guria in the city square over his war failures. Kian (Asterios) intervenes, exposing the corruption of Balinars’s subordinate Tiegel to prevent him from sabotaging the citizens’ unity. The standoff ends with Balinars withdrawing, while Guria gains a deeper understanding of Kian’s pragmatic ruthlessness.

Kian leaves the political situation at Kyujo Palace to return to Grass Island, where preparations for a dangerous mission to Cyclops Island are underway. He discusses the risks of using a Satori spirit to impersonate the deceased Shidarkan with Rou, while also bonding over Rou’s complex family dynamics. The group prepares their gear, including Isthbaran’s reinforced Windsong Blade, for a high-stakes infiltration.

Kian’s group prepares to infiltrate Cyclops Island to retrieve the preserved remains of Lord Shidarkan. Ukuba, a shadow entity, expresses a desire for a physical vessel and a predatory interest in the local women. The team finalizes a dangerous sea-landing plan under the cover of night.

 —

 Trivia:

 - The crowd is throwing stones because of the sun’s position (nishibi) behind them.

 - Eugenia’s daughter was one of the soldiers sent to the ‘place of death’ by Balinars’s bad intel.

 - The poll tax (Jizya) is a direct consequence of the unconditional surrender to the Gensou.

 - Kian intentionally threatened Tiegel’s family to ‘sear’ a hatred of bribery into the public consciousness.

 - Guria acknowledges Kian is a ‘hero’ not because he is purely kind, but because he is willing to be ugly for the right cause.

 - Kian’s ‘-nmo’ tic is tied to his current beast form.

 - Talia’s telepathy seems suspicious or ‘forward’ to Kian.

 - The soul of Shidarkan is being replaced by a Satori spirit using his living memories.

 - Natra is a previous example of memory-based resurrection mentioned by Kian.

 - Rou’s education was secretly funded by his sister, Linca.

 - The Windsong Blade has been modified to be quieter and more durable for stealth.

 - Ukuba is noted as being exceptionally dangerous and intelligent among the spirits.

 - Ukuba is physically an eight-legged shadow inside a birdcage.

 - Isthbaran cannot understand Azraelic, creating a language gap within the team.

 - Talia’s magic involves pins that act as autonomous trackers/indicators.

 - The mission is strictly stealth-based with a ‘no witnesses’ policy

 Character Insight:

Balinars is desperately trying to cling to power as a puppet of the invaders. Kian shows his ‘Black Hero’ side by using psychological warfare and public execution of reputation to secure a political goal. Guria is transitioning from a sheltered royal to a leader who understands the ‘dark side’ of heroism.

Kian shows a compassionate side by offering Rou a ‘way out’ of his family obligations, prioritizing Rou’s emotional well-being over tradition. Rou shows vulnerability regarding his past and his sister’s potential fate in Kian’s harem.

Kian demonstrates cold pragmatism by allowing Ukuba’s predatory behavior as long as it doesn’t compromise the mission. Ukuba shows a mix of nostalgia for his homeland and sheer murderous insanity.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The use of the term ‘Jizya’ and ‘Azraelism’ hints at an Abrahamic-inspired religious antagonist force within the world-building.

The use of alcohol to scrub scent is a practical detail reflecting the high stakes of beastman-based stealth missions.

The use of ‘Western swine’ suggests a deep-seated cultural or racial conflict in the world-building, common in Seinen-targeted dark fantasy.
