Chapter 209 Yamato Hina and The Demon King Medinilla ⑭

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

By the time the bulk of the work was finished, the curtain of night had fallen. We didn’t stay at the inn; instead, we moved the Prydwen¹ outside the city, near the shattered gate, and sat down for a late dinner.

 ”I’m exhausted…” I groaned.

”I’ll say. I never imagined we’d run into a city under siege the second we arrived,” Mihiro said with a wry smile. That was certainly unexpected, but it wasn’t the real reason I was so drained.

”It’s not just that. Kagaya has been stalking me…”

I had parted ways with Yamato, only to run smack into Kagaya. For some reason, she’d taken an interest in me, staring me down as if I were a specimen under a microscope.

 ”Kagaya-san! Why you?” Mihiro asked.

”Hell if I know. Oh, she did say something like, ‘You’re not listed.’ Do you know what that’s supposed to mean?”

”Hmm, I haven’t the slightest clue,” Mihiro replied.

”Well, I wasn’t expecting much from Honoka anyway,” I teased.

”Master, that’s just mean!” Honoka cried. She puffed out her cheeks with a loud pffft, pouting and grumbling at my joke.

”My bad, my bad. I’ll make it up to you with something that feels real good later,” I said.

”Hmph! You promise? You absolutely promise!”

”Yeah, yeah,” I said, brushing her off. Well, Honoka ends up feeling good no matter what I do to her.

”Mihiro, do you know anything? You went to the academy together, right?”

”I didn’t have much contact with Kagaya-san. It’s probably related to her Unique Skill², but by the time I noticed her, my Status was already being spoofed. I don’t know what her Skill actually is,” Mihiro explained.

 ”I see…”

So Mihiro didn’t know either. But based on that “not listed” remark, I’m guessing it’s some kind of database-type Unique Skill. Well, if I’m not listed, it means she hasn’t figured out my true identity yet. Still, being stalked isn’t exactly a great feeling.

I don’t care how beautiful she is-I’ll pass on the stalker vibes.

 Regardless…

”Still eating junk food, I see…” I noted.

”I-it can’t be helped, I reckon de-gozaru. I-I can only eat stuff like this right now,” Yokoo stammered.

Yokoo sat before a mountain of french fries and a tartar fish burger. After seeing that mountain of corpses today, he couldn’t stomach meat. Even though Torimaki-the one who’d planted that trauma in him-was gone from this world, Yokoo still hadn’t overcome it.

Actually, the rest of us were eating fish instead of meat too. It seemed even Honoka, Mihiro, and Reese had reached their limit. Yukiko was the only one who seemed unbothered-whether it was because she was a Blood Sucking Ogre or just had a natural high tolerance, I couldn’t say.

Then there was Tatei. He’d barely touched his food. Even a girl on a diet would eat more than that. But that couldn’t be helped; he was suffering from anorexia. Even so…

”I’ve become able to eat more than before, I daresay de-gozaru,” he claimed.

Setting Yokoo aside, Tatei was improving, bit by bit. He’d even been doing practice swings this morning. He gassed out almost immediately, but he was still trying to overcome his past.

”Well, don’t overdo it. It’s all for nothing if you collapse,” I warned.

”I’m well aware of that, I assure you de-gozaru,” Tatei replied.

”I-I want to be able to eat normal home cooking too. For Sango-chan’s sake,” Yokoo added.

”Ma-kun…” Sango murmured. She looked dazed, her cheeks flushing red as if she’d been moved to tears by Yokoo’s sentiment.

Yeah, yeah. Get a room, you two.

While the city outside was still in a state of chaos, dinner inside the vehicle proceeded peacefully. Just then, there was a knock at the door. Who the hell was interrupting our late dinner?

”I’ll go check,” Mihiro said, standing up to see who it was. They spoke with the visitor for a moment before returning. “It’s the Academy’s Board Chairwoman. She says she wants to thank us for what happened and asked if she could come in. What do you think?”

The Board Chairwoman? If it were a city official, I could understand… oh wait, that official was currently being beaten to a pulp by the citizens. Usually, a proxy would come and tell us to show up on a specific day for a reward.

Well, since she took the trouble to come in person, I had no reason to refuse. I gave the okay. Mihiro nodded and ushered in a young woman. She was a beauty with silver hair and emerald eyes. Since they’d said “Board Chairwoman,” I’d expected someone older, but she looked remarkably young.

”Ah, sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt your meal.”

That strangely high-pitched anime voice… it was the same loud voice from earlier. She must have used some kind of amplification sorcery, but even so, it was incredibly clear. Actually, I’d heard that voice before. Back before the Summons.

”Um, I haven’t introduced myself yet. I’m Car-“

”Oribe Mira!” Yokoo, Tatei, and Reese shouted in unison.

”Wha-!? How did you know my real identity!?”

The beautiful Board Chairwoman jumped, shocked that her cover was blown. Mihiro gave a wry smile, Sango let out a shocked cry, while Honoka, Yukiko, and Alice just looked on blankly. They probably had no idea who Oribe Mira was.

But judging by her reaction, I was right. I mean, when I heard that loud voice, I thought, No way…

 ”Um, who?” Honoka asked.

”She’s a voice actress! She played the heroine in Magical Girl Chronicles³!” Tatei shouted.

”Sorry, never heard of her,” Honoka replied.

Well, it made sense that Honoka, who wasn’t an otaku, wouldn’t know. Same for Yukiko, who was basically a lab-grown princess. As for Alice, she was a resident of this world, so she had no way of knowing. Sango knew the name, but she hadn’t recognized her from the voice alone.

Still, to think I’d meet a celebrity like this… wait.

”Mihiro, you knew, didn’t you? You kept quiet on purpose.”

”I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Mihiro said, playing dumb. They definitely knew. After all, they’d watched her anime with me. Whatever. I’ll make them talk with their body later.

”O-oh man, it’s the real Mira! I-I want an autograph!” Yokoo cried.

 ”Me too!” Reese added.

”Might I ask for one as well?” Tatei asked de-gozaru.

It suddenly got incredibly noisy. I guess it couldn’t be helped.

”An autograph… an autograph, huh? I haven’t written one in over five hundred years, so I’ve forgotten what it even looks like. So… I’m sorry,” Oribe-san said, pressing her hands together and bowing her head in apology.

Wait, five hundred years? That meant she’d teleported to this world five centuries ago. Which meant she was a former Hero.

”Five hundred years… I don’t care! I still want one!” Tatei insisted de-gozaru. He thrust an autograph board at her. Of course, Yokoo and Reese did too. Wait, where the hell did they even get those?

 ”Really? Well, if you’re sure…”

Oribe-san signed them dutifully, looking a bit overwhelmed by the trio’s intensity. There were other things bothering me, though. My memories from before the Summons didn’t match up. I was certain a different voice actress had played the heroine in Magical Girl Chronicles. But at the same time, I had a distinct memory of Oribe Mira playing the part. Yokoo, Tatei, and Reese seemed to be feeling the same uncanny disconnect. Reese was the first to voice it.

”Wait a sec. This is weird,” Reese said.

”Reese, what is it?” I asked.

”Unless my memory is totally failing me, I don’t think Oribe Mira was the one who voiced that role.”

”Huh? Now that you mention it… what’s going on?” Yokoo wondered.

”…It’s like our memories are overlapping,” Tatei noted de-gozaru. The trio tilted their heads in confusion.

”If you know who I am, that means you’re Outworlders… the Heroes of this era, right?” Oribe-san said. “It’s probably because my existence was effectively erased. But because you were summoned and then encountered me, you ‘remembered.’ The mixed-up memories are likely a side effect of that.”

I see. “Erased,” huh? Come to think of it, it was the same with Sango. It seemed like everyone had forgotten about Yokoo until the summons happened. In other words, we were being treated as if we never existed in our original world. No wonder we get tossed into random places and times when we’re sent back.

”Um, so Oribe-san came here five hundred years ago and has just been… living this whole time? Even a witch shouldn’t live that long, right?” Honoka asked.

”Ah, I’m going by Carmilla Oliver now, not Oribe Mira, so please call me that,” she replied. “As for the question… it’s thanks to-or because of-my Unique Skill. I have a body that can’t die. Also, I’ve changed my hair and eye color. I am Japanese, after all.”

So she was disguised as Carmilla. Same as me. But a body that can’t die? Immortality is what every tyrant wants most, but I wonder if it’s really all it’s cracked up to be. Anyway, we’d drifted pretty far from the main point. Carmilla’s actual business hadn’t been addressed yet. I gave a light cough to nudge her back on track.

”Ah, right. I forgot why I came here. Ahem-thanks to you all, we were able to keep the damage to this city to a minimum. Thank you,” she said, bowing her head.

”You say ‘minimum,’ but the damage was still pretty catastrophic,” I countered.

”True. It’s going to be a nightmare from here on-compensations and everything else. Well, we’ll be using the money the Governor… the former Governor… had hoarded away. I just hope it’s enough…” Carmilla let out a heavy sigh. Over ten thousand people had died. The cost was going to be astronomical.

”I could provide some funding, if you need…” I offered.

”No, that’s okay. If it’s not enough, the state will have to foot the bill. Besides, you say that so casually-do you really have that much money?”

”A lot more than your average person. I’m a casino owner, after all,” I said. My funds had taken a hit thanks to Sugita, but I still had plenty stashed away. In fact, it was actually growing. Viva passive income.

”A casino owner… Ah, so you’re Sieben. I’ve heard quite a bit about you from my disciple,” Carmilla said.

 ”Disciple?”

 ”Guildmaster Minette Cornaut.”

Ah, the head of the Sorcerers’ Guild and Jessica’s grandmother. That woman was Carmilla’s disciple? In that case, she probably knew a fair amount about me. But did they still keep in touch?

”We use a magic tool to keep each other updated,” Carmilla explained. Apparently, the ones she and Guildmaster Minette held were a matching pair, and the only ones in existence. They were national treasures. “So, I have a decent grasp of your capabilities through her. With that in mind, there’s something I need to ask of you.”

Carmilla’s expression turned dead serious as she looked at me.

”The demon race… the Ogre-kin… have seized Fort Misone. I want you to help us take it back.”

 Summary:

The group recovers from the battle with a quiet dinner while dealing with the trauma of the massacre. A surprise visit from the Academy Board Chairwoman reveals her true identity as a famous Earth voice actress and former Hero from 500 years ago. She requests the protagonist’s help in reclaiming a captured fort from the Ogre-kin.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Kagaya’s skill failed to identify the protagonist because he is ‘not listed’.

 - Oribe Mira is immortal and has been in the world for 500 years.

 - The protagonist’s existence on Earth seems to have been ‘erased’ or overwritten.

 - Minette Cornaut (Jessica’s grandmother) is the disciple of Carmilla/Mira.

 - The protagonist is currently hiding his identity under the name Sieben

 —

 Character Insight:

Yokoo and Tatei are showing slow signs of recovery from their past traumas, with Tatei training physically and Yokoo motivated by Sango. The protagonist shows his pragmatic nature by offering financial aid but remains cautious about his secret identity.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The ‘erased memory’ trope is used here to explain the discrepancy in voice acting roles, suggesting a cosmic consequence for teleportation.
