Chapter 217 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ㉒

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The day to retake Fort Misone¹ finally arrived. The camp was struck, and the lines were formed. The plan was straightforward: the regular army of Envyos²-the Knights and the infantry-would mount a frontal assault. Meanwhile, our mercenary company would act as a strike team to infiltrate the fort, drop the drawbridge, and usher the Knights inside. As a bonus, my group and the party led by Yamato Hina were tasked with neutralizing the Flame Demon General, Bolgano.

The regulars probably wanted his head for themselves, but yielding the kill to us proved they at least understood their own limitations. They knew that charging him was just a fancy way of committing suicide.

Because of the stakes, I’d been exempted from night watch duty. I didn’t want Honoka and the others standing on the front lines while exhausted, so I’d decided to skip our usual “after-hours exercise.” I also had to tell Yamihama to show some restraint-well, I actually just sent her back-since having a company of mercenaries too drained to lift their swords would have been a problem.

As for the rest, the Vertical-Horizontal duo, Alice, and Sango stayed behind as ship-keepers on the Serpenta Ria. Alice and Sango aside, the duo just isn’t built for a siege.

Fort Misone itself was a nightmare to storm. The walls stood thirty feet high, surrounded by a water-filled moat. To make matters worse, there was only one gate. We had to rely on heavy siege engines. The moat made battering rams useless, but we had three catapults and two belfries ready to roll. We were as prepared as we were ever going to be.

We were currently huddled inside a siege tower, waiting for the infiltration to begin. Honestly, the cover was a lifesaver.

 Especially for Honoka.

On a side note, the men who had been “serviced” by Yamihama were all reassigned to the other tower. Apparently, they couldn’t even look at me-or rather, Honoka and the other women-without flinching. Well, after being milked that dry, I couldn’t really blame them.

 ”Advance!” the Viscount bellowed.

Under his command, the ranks began to move. Watching that sea of steel march in perfect unison from the top of the tower was a hell of a sight.

We were just approaching catapult range when the drawbridge suddenly groaned open. Ogre-kin began pouring out in droves-maybe four or five hundred of them. Without a hint of hesitation, they launched a total, desperate charge.

 …Are you kidding me?

In a siege, the defenders usually hold every card. The rule of thumb is that you need three times the numbers to break a castle. Yet, these guys threw that advantage away to meet us in the dirt. Either they were incredibly confident, or they were complete muscle-brains. Likely both.

I didn’t expect a sally, but the Envyos army wasn’t so incompetent that they’d panic. The archers drew their bows, the sorcerers wove their circles, and they loosed a synchronized volley.

A deluge of arrows and magic rained down like a flash flood. The Ogre-kin didn’t even flinch. They used the bodies of their fatally wounded comrades as meat-shields and kept screaming forward.

What the hell was driving them? The answer was simple: vengeance. They want payback for the countless lives the Hero had snuffed out for no reason. In that sense, they weren’t so different from me. But their target was wrong. They were taking their rage out on the wrong country. To them, we were all just “humans,” but slaughtering bystanders is never the right call.

Then again, it wasn’t like they’d listen to reason, and the people of Envyos had lost their own loved ones to these invaders. We were well past the point of no return.

The Ogre-kin slammed into the heavy infantry’s shield wall. With their massive builds and spirits fueled by spite, they started punching through. They were crushing men through plate armor and oak shields alike. The field devolved into a chaotic melee. At this point, the “siege” was out the window. Still, our catapults were firing, and the towers kept rolling forward.

Some of the Ogre-kin noticed us. Despite their raw strength, they couldn’t ignore the weight of numbers-we had them ten-to-one, so they weren’t going to break the line easily. Still, a few squads managed to hack through the thick of it and head straight for our tower.

”Yukiko, cast Aegis³ on the tower,” I said.

”You got it, Sieben!” Yukiko replied with a sweet smile.

She deployed the spell exactly as I asked. An Ogre-kin tried to smash the wooden structure, but the impact reflected instantly, shredding his own chest. He died before he hit the ground. Others were wounded and finished off the moment they staggered.

The other siege tower didn’t fare as well. It looked like it had been trashed. The mercenaries on that side were likely wiped out. Well, they went out after one hell of a final night, so I doubt they had many regrets.

”I see… her Unique Skill is a reflection type,” Yamato Hina noted, nodding to herself. “That explains why she’s so unfazed, even standing there with a parasol.”

She’d figured out the mechanic quickly. Sharp. But then there was the other one.

”Himuro… using Aegis? Wait…” Kagaya muttered, looking unconvinced.

Did I slip up? I don’t think she’d piece together my identity from just that, but I didn’t have time to dwell on it.

”We’re at the wall!” I called out. “Is everyone ready?”

The group nodded. About eighty mercenaries were packed in here with us. Since the drawbridge was already down, our original job was technically moot, but the plan had shifted: we were going to hit them with a pincer attack from the rear.

We needed to move, but I couldn’t see Bolgano anywhere. If he were on the field, our losses would be ten times higher. He was baiting us.

The tower ground to a halt against the ramparts, and the gangplank slammed down onto the stone. The construction was solid; it didn’t sway or creak as we prepared to cross.

 ”Let’s go!” I shouted.

”Roger!” the girls replied in unison.

Honoka, Mihiro, Yukiko, and Reese charged out with me. Hina’s group followed, and we all spilled onto the top of the wall. It was about ten feet wide. Usually, a wall would be crawling with defenders, but they must have all joined the sally. Not a single Ogre-kin was in sight.

 Works for me.

”Alright, let’s stick to the plan,” I said.

This was where we parted ways with the rest of the mercenaries.

”Right,” one of the mercs replied. “Good luck out there.”

 ”You too,” I said.

The mercenaries headed down the inner stairs toward the open gate. Even with the physical gap between them, a surprise attack might work. But unlike the Knights fighting for their home, these guys were just in it for the coin. They’d tuck tail the second things looked grim. You can’t spend your gold if you’re dead, after all.

As for us, we had a much faster way down than the stairs.

 ”We’re jumping,” I said.

”Wait, really?!” Honoka cried out. “Milord, it’s… it’s kind of a long way down!”

Honoka, who wasn’t exactly the athletic type, went pale. Jumping thirty feet could easily kill a normal person.

 ”It’s fine,” I said. “I’ve got you.”

”Eek?! A-A princess carry?! Again?!” Honoka squeaked, her face turning bright red as she melted into a dazed, lovestruck grin. Funyaa…

Right, I’d done this back during the Orc hunt too. Mihiro and Reese looked on with pure envy.

 ”I’m so jealous…” they whispered.

Meanwhile, Ise Maya was giving us the side-eye. “What do they even see in a guy like him…?”

”Haha… Maya is as hard on men as ever,” Yamato Hina said with a strained laugh.

”And for good reason,” Maya replied. “Men are essentially just animals that think with their crotches.”

I mean, considering guys like Koganei and Sugita existed, she wasn’t exactly wrong. But we weren’t all like that.

”See you at the bottom, Sieben!” Yukiko called out.

She shaped a pair of bat-like wings out of her shadows and fluttered down.

”Huh,” Kagaya noted. “I guess being a Vampire comes with some perks. Plenty of weaknesses, sure, but that looks handy. Maybe I should have him ‘turn’ me, too.”

She said that while shooting a pointed look my way. Crap. She definitely suspected I’d done something to her. Well, no point crying over spilled milk. Still holding Honoka, I leaped off the wall and stuck the landing inside the courtyard.

Mihiro and Reese followed suit and landed without a hitch. Hina and Maya made it down fine, too. The second she landed, Maya glared at me, but I ignored her. It wasn’t like I was some virgin who was going to get flustered by a glimpse of panties.

Kagaya used a Levitation spell to float down. Like Honoka, her physical stats aren’t exactly top-tier.

 ”Want a look?” she teased.

”Not even a little bit,” I snapped.

Seriously, Kagaya. I wasn’t going to get a hard-on over a peek. Now, if she were wearing some slutty open-crotch lingerie, that might be a different story.

Anyway, we were all down. All that was left was to take Bolgano’s head. Both Mihiro and I could feel his presence. We shared a nod and took off running toward where the heat was waiting.

Alright. Time for the main event.

 —

 Summary:

Sieben and his allies begin the assault on Fort Misone. The enemy Ogre-kin surprise them with a suicidal frontal charge driven by a desire for revenge against the Hero. Sieben’s group successfully infiltrates the walls using a siege tower and prepares for a final showdown with General Bolgano.

 —

 Trivia:

 - The Knights of Envyos are actually a regular army, distinct from Sieben’s mercenaries.

 - Sieben purposely sent Yamihama back because she was ‘draining’ the other mercenaries’ energy through s*xual activities.

 - Yukiko is specifically a Vampire, which allows her to manifest bat wings from shadows.

 - Kagaya is increasingly suspicious of Sieben’s ‘Himuro’ identity.

 - The Ogre-kin are using their own dead as shields, highlighting their desperation

 —

 Character Insight:

Sieben shows a rare moment of philosophical reflection, acknowledging that his own quest for vengeance mirrors that of his enemies, though he still maintains a moral distinction regarding targeting innocents.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The author uses the ‘princess carry’ as a recurring trope to highlight the growing harem/romantic elements despite the dark, vengeful tone of the series.
