Chapter 218 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ㉓

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 Sshht!

 ”Glargh!”

I cut down the Ogre-kin remaining in the fort with a single, horizontal slash. I had assumed the rest of them were outside intercepting the knights, but a few must have stayed behind as sentries. I flicked the blood from my blade and ignored the dying ogre, sprinting toward my destination.

Fort Misone was sprawling, but I had the layout memorized from the blueprints I’d seen during the briefing. I could feel a presence coming from the training grounds used by the soldiers. Unlike the other Ogre-kin, this one made no effort to hide its massive power, nor did it move an inch.

It was Bolgano, the Fire Demon General.

He was waiting for us. He likely chose the training grounds because the open space suited his fighting style. Of course, the same applied to me.

”A katana… no, is it a tachi¹? That’s quite a legendary edge,” Yamato Hina said, eyeing my blade.

For this mission, both I and Mihiro had come armed with tachi. As Yamato said, they were true longswords. Mine had a blade length of roughly thirty-two inches-a replica of the Dojigiri Yasutsuna², the blade famous for slaying demons. Tatei had forged this piece specifically for this occasion. Because of its history, it possessed a specialized “ogre-slayer” enchantment.

Mihiro carried a blade of many names: the Onikiri Yasutsuna. Whether called Higekiri or Onimaru, it was equally famous for severing ogre limbs. Like mine, it was a replica augmented with the power of its legends.

As a side note, I could summon both using my ‘Magic Sword’ skill, but I had Tatei forge these physical versions because my ‘Unique Skill’ slot was already occupied. Since I wasn’t sure of our enemy’s strength, I was currently ‘Tracing’ the ‘Warmonger’ skill I’d seen from Orcus.

Being able to trace only one skill at a time was a glaring weakness. I briefly regretted transferring the skill back to Orcus, but it was too late for that now. At the very least, Tatei had been moved to tears of joy, claiming, “To forge such legendary blades… I am filled with emotion de-gozaru!” So, I’ll call it a win.

We marched down the corridor toward the training grounds. The closer we got, the stronger Bolgano’s presence became. It was a stinging pressure on the skin, a mix of bloodlust and battle spirit. When we finally reached the grounds, we found Bolgano already poised in a combat stance, waiting for us.

”I’ve grown tired of waiting,” he roared with a boisterous laugh, leveling a jagged barbarian sword at us. “Now, let us engage in a duel to the death!”

He threw his fighting spirit at us like a physical weight. From that alone, I knew his strength was incomparable to the Ogre-kin outside. He might even be stronger than Orcus. Everyone except me was visibly pressured. For those besides Yukiko, it was likely the same dread they felt when facing the Barghest. The only difference was that no one intended to run. They were prepared.

”Alright, just like we planned,” I said.

 ”Understood,” Yamato replied.

”The thought of teaming up with you makes my skin crawl… but fine,” Ise spat.

Yamato nodded while Ise threw her insults. At least they knew their priorities. Everyone readied their weapons and cast reinforcement sorcery. Kagaya and I added augmentations to everyone’s gear, boosting attack and defense. Then, Honoka and Yukiko made the first move.

 ”Wind Thrust!”

 ”Ice Javelin!”

They unleashed their specialized sorcery. With that, the battle began. The spells slammed into Bolgano, but they didn’t seem to leave a scratch.

”Impressive power, truly,” Bolgano said. “But this is barely skin-deep. And ice? Ice has no place against my heat. It won’t work.”

He was right. Honoka’s lack of impact was unexpected, but I had already anticipated Yukiko’s ice being useless. Still, even if it didn’t hurt, it was a distraction. Yukiko fired a relentless barrage of ‘Ice Javelins.’

”Nuu… it doesn’t hurt, but it’s getting annoying!”

Bolgano showed a flash of irritation, creating an opening. Yamato slashed from the front while the two Ises, having split via ‘Parting Body’, threw a combined twelve knives at his back. Their coordination was perfect, a testament to years of fighting side-by-side.

Bolgano caught Yamato’s blade on his barbarian sword, but Ise’s knives all buried themselves in his back.

 ”Itches. It just itches!”

”…That isn’t just acting tough, is it?” Ise muttered.

Despite our attack buffs, Ise’s knives weren’t dealing real damage. Then again, her role was harassment, not the kill. Yamato’s role was also the tank, not the primary attacker. Bolgano shoved Yamato’s sword back and tried to catch her with a diagonal slash, but she parried it with her shield.

 ”Nuu, you’re good.”

”Save your breath,” Yamato said. “How long do you plan on focusing only on me?”

 ”Air Thrust!”

Honoka unleashed ‘Air Thrust’, the superior version of her wind magic. Bolgano realized he couldn’t ignore this one and tried to leap back.

 ”Nuguaah!?”

A blindside slash from Mihiro and a piercing thrust from Reese pinned him down just long enough. As Yamato retreated, Bolgano took the full force of the spell.

”Gu… guh… Hahahaha! Yes! This is what a duel should be!”

Despite the damage, he continued to laugh. Any hope of winning through attrition vanished in an instant. The wounds Mihiro, Reese, and Honoka had inflicted weren’t shallow, yet flames suddenly erupted from inside Bolgano’s body, knitting the flesh back together instantly.

”You’ve got to be kidding me,” I said. “That’s just cheating.”

”I would not dream of holding back against warriors like you,” Bolgano growled. “I’ve host to the Phoenix since the start. Half-hearted attacks are meaningless now.”

A Phoenix… so the trait of immortality existed in this world, too.

Bolgano flexed, and the knives lodged in his back were forced out by his muscles alone. He was the strongest opponent I had ever faced.

 ”Seriously… you’re a far cry from Blizzard,” I said.

”Hou? You know of Blizzard? That boy was the runt of the Six Demon Generals, a loudmouth with no talent. But tell me, where did you hear of him?”

”Hear of him? I’m the one who took him down. I wasn’t the one who finished him, but I broke him.”

 ”I see, I see…”

Bolgano nodded, seemingly impressed. So Blizzard really was the weakest link.

”Then I suppose I owe you a bit of vengeance,” Bolgano said. “But more importantly, why do you linger in the back? I can tell you’re the strongest one here. My eyes aren’t just for show.”

Yamato and Ise both looked back at me.

”Sieben-san did defeat me, yes,” Yamato said. “But my status is higher.”

”This man is stronger than Milady?” Ise scoffed. “Your eyes are definitely failing you, old man.”

”How foolish. You stand right beside him and cannot see the power he’s hiding? Status can be falsified as much as one likes.”

I clicked my tongue. He had seen right through me. Honestly, I had hoped I could just stay on support duty.

”Step forward,” Bolgano commanded. “I have been waiting for this fight.”

I let out a sigh. He was a battle-maniac just like Orcus, but stronger. And he was specifically calling me out. Given his insane regeneration, we lacked the finishing power to end this without me.

”Fine. I’ll be your opponent,” I said, stepping past the others. “But don’t come crying to me when you realize what you’ve started.”

”I wouldn’t dream of it! Win or lose, let us enjoy this to the very end!”

I signaled Mihiro and Reese to fall back and stepped to the front.

 Summary:

The party reaches the heart of Fort Misone to face Bolgano, the Flame Demon General. Despite a coordinated assault, they discover Bolgano is possessed by a Phoenix, granting him instant regeneration. Realizing the group cannot win alone, Sieben drops his support role and steps forward to duel the General.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Sieben is purposely hiding his true ‘Status’ strength from his party members.

 - The blades being used are replicas, but carry the ‘concept’ and ‘legends’ of the originals through magic.

 - Sieben is using ‘Tracing’ magic, which currently limits him to one copied skill at a time.

 - Bolgano views the previously defeated Blizzard as a pathetic weakling

 —

 Character Insight:

Sieben shows a blend of pragmatism and suppressed ego. He prefers support to avoid attention, but when challenged by a peer-level combatant who sees through his ‘Status’ falsification, he accepts the duel with a warning, showing a glimpse of his ‘Seven Sins’ potential.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The author uses classic shonen power-scaling tropes (The ‘Weakest’ of the generals) to establish Bolgano as a high-tier threat while highlighting the protagonist’s unique ability to bypass system-defined stats.

 TL Notes:

1 Tachi: A type of traditionally made Japanese sword worn edge-down, generally longer and more curved than a katana.

Did that filthy idiot Ise already forget how he beat both her and her “lady” at the same time despite her cowardly tricks? It seems both her brain and eyes are rotten garbage
