Chapter 230 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ㉙

”Yes, thank you for your patience. It’ll take a few moments to process your registration. In the meantime, I’ll explain how the guild works.”
”Much appreciated.”
”Of course. As for being an adventurer…”
According to the receptionist, the work wasn’t all that different from being a monster hunter. You gathered materials, subjugated beasts, and so on. The only real difference was that they also handled town cleaning and escort missions. Rather than an adventurer, it felt more like being an all-purpose handyman.
Furthermore, there were no rank divisions. You simply accepted the requests you wanted and finished them. Your life was your own responsibility during a mission. “In this village, the most you’ll see are requests for goblin extermination,” the receptionist noted.
”So, do you ever get subjugation requests for things like a Goblin King¹?”
”Oh, heavens no! A dangerous creature like a Goblin King wouldn’t just-wait, hold on. I hope I’m wrong, but… did one actually show up?”
”It did. Or rather, we ran into a massive horde led by a Goblin King. We took them all out, though.”
”Eeeek!?”
The receptionist’s voice cracked into a high-pitched squeal.
”Aye, it’s just as Sieben says. For the record, it was Sieben-kun over there who did the deed,” Bolgano-sama added.
”What in the…!? Not Bolgano-sama, but this person…?”
The receptionist’s shoulders began to tremble. I couldn’t blame her for being skeptical, even if the word came from Bolgano. There was no reason for Bolgano to lie, but I knew I looked suspicious as hell. Accepting that a shady human had soloed a Goblin King was a tall order. But then…
”Spl…”
”Spl?”
”Splendid! Subjugating a Goblin King is nothing short of a miracle! And more importantly, that monster was actually wandering near our village? That means… you! You’re the hero who saved this village!”
Wait a second… something’s fishy here. I was expecting something more like, “It’s disgusting to be saved by a human!” followed by a barrage of insults. After all, I’d written ‘Human’ in the race column, and the receptionist had seen it. She had to know we weren’t demon kin².
In fact…
”I’m asking a bit late, but are humans even allowed to register?”
”Ah, yes, it’s not a problem. We’ve had humans register in the past. Though, the last time was nearly two hundred years ago.”
Two hundred years… was it one of the Heroes from two generations back? It was nearly impossible for a normal human to even set foot in the Demon King’s territory, after all.
”The story goes that most of them viewed us demon kin as the enemy. But a very, very small handful of humans didn’t harbor that kind of hostility. Just like you-sama.”
Apparently, there was a Hero in the past who, like me, didn’t view demon kin as enemies. That confirmed it-there were others among the past Heroes who had managed to bypass Aurelia’s mental manipulation. If that was the case, I really wanted to know who they were.
”Just out of curiosity… do you happen to know the name of that human adventurer?”
”Eh? Oh, yes. Looking back through seven hundred years of records… I believe the human’s name was Oribe Mira-san.”
”Cough! Hack!“
I nearly choked. I didn’t expect to hear that name in a place like this.
”Is she someone famous? There were others, too, like a Tsunami Soichiro-san…”
Tsunami Soichiro. He was one of the key figures in the founding of Greedia. His name had been scrubbed from history by the man himself and the Octagram Council³ of that era, leaving almost no one who knew the truth. Every current member of the council knew it, of course. I still don’t get why they went to such lengths to hide it. Was he just that camera-shy?
”Well, they were humans, so I’m sure they’ve long since passed away by now.”
I couldn’t exactly say, “Actually, one of them is still alive under a different name,” not even if my life depended on it. The rest of them were surely six feet under by now, though. If I said something like, “We’ll probably never meet,” I’d just be tripping a flag, wouldn’t I?
”Sorry for the wait! Here are your adventurer identification cards. It costs a fee to re-issue these if you lose them, so please be careful with them, okay?”
Registration was finally done. The IDs were metal plates about the size of a business card, with our names neatly engraved. There were four in total: for me, Honoka-chan, Yukiko-chan, and Mashiro-chan. I wondered what kind of metal it was. Based on the shine, it looked like silver. It definitely wasn’t iron. It might just be plated, but whatever.
”By the way, do you plan on staying a while? Unfortunately, this village doesn’t have anything you’d call a proper inn…”
”That’s fine. We can manage on our own.”
Even if they had an inn, we wouldn’t be able to do anything “extracurricular” there. I could probably mask the sounds and voices with magic, but it felt like we’d get caught eventually. Besides, I didn’t plan on lingering. It was better to move on to the next village or town as quickly as possible. You can never have too many teleportation waypoints⁴.
”Finished the exchange! It was quite the haul, I tell ya!”
Bolgano grabbed a bag bulging with coins, showing it off to us. I wondered how long we could live on this much cash.
”Mind you, this is only a fraction of it. This village didn’t have enough on hand to cover the whole lot, so we’ll have to exchange the rest in a bigger city.”
”There’s even more…?”
The income was way higher than I’d expected. Don’t they have banks or some kind of savings facility here? That would be incredibly useful.
…Wait, we have Item Boxes. I guess it doesn’t really matter for us.
Well, the sun was going down. We’d stay in the village tonight and head out first thing in the morning. Even if they were under orders, there was no telling what Yamato and his group might do if I left them alone for too long.
* * *
The next day, we left the village and set a course for the next destination Bolgano had suggested. Along the way, we handled the adventurer registration for Mihiro and Reese-chan. We drifted from place to place, hunting monsters and clearing requests.
It was all for the sake of leveling up. My days were filled with travel and combat; my nights were spent in a depraved routine of “late-night sparring sessions” with Honoka-chan and the others-sometimes one-on-one, sometimes one-against-five.
By the time we reached the point where we could breeze through goblins, orcs, and even ogres, two months had already passed since we entered the Demon King’s territory.
—
Summary:
Sieben and his group register at an adventurer’s guild in a demon village. They shock the receptionist by revealing they defeated a Goblin King horde. After learning about historical human adventurers, they embark on a two-month leveling journey through the Demon King’s territory.
—
Trivia:
- The protagonist explicitly wrote ‘Human’ on his registration form.
- There were no adventurer ranks in this specific demon village guild.
- Mira Oribe and Soichiro Tsunami are names of past human adventurers known to the protagonist.
- The Octagram Council is the ruling body of Greedia.
- Sieben is avoiding staying at inns to keep his nightly activities with his companions private.
- A two-month time skip occurs at the end of the chapter
—
Character Insight:
Sieben shows a cynical but pragmatic worldview, prioritizing efficiency (teleportation points) and privacy (avoiding inns) over fame (the hero title). He is also curious about the history of Heroes who resisted mental manipulation.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The author used a Detective Conan reference (‘Are-re?’) to highlight Sieben’s suspicion. The term ‘late-night pro-wrestling’ (localized as sparring) is a meta-commentary on the story’s 10 million PV milestone.
