Chapter 231 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ㉚
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
It had been three months since we registered as adventurers. We had finally reached the castle where the Demon King resided. We could have arrived much sooner if we had focused solely on the journey, but we took on various requests along the way. Slaying countless monsters to raise the party’s overall level had eaten up some time, but the results were well worth the effort.
”Master! I broke Level 60!”
”Me too. Level 67, to be exact.”
”I’m at 64.”
Their levels had skyrocketed compared to when we first left Greedia. For context, I was at 76 and Tanaka Yukiko was at 73. Since the Kin share experience across the board, their levels were significantly higher than Honoka or Mihiro. Even Lil, who wasn’t with us, was at 75-barely a gap between us. Naturally, Yamato and her group had leveled up considerably as well, all of them breaking into the 60s.
Still, it was impressive to see how much we had grown in a mere three months. The primary catalyst was undoubtedly the dragon hunt. Within the Demon King’s territory lived a beast bearing the title of the Gluttony Dragon¹. True to its name, it devoured everything in its path. It was an Ancient Dragon², a creature of legend. Even in this land, the dragon had claimed the lives of countless demon-kin³. Though a subjugation request had been posted indefinitely, it had sat gathering dust because no one dared to take it.
We accepted the challenge and took the beast down. Thanks to that feat, we were hailed as heroes and received a lavish welcome. Of course, Yamato-san and her followers still harbored a deep-seated hostility toward the demon-kin; they refused to enter the city and missed out on the hospitality entirely.
Regarding the Ancient Dragon-much like Ishururu-it possessed a Dragon Orb⁴ containing its accumulated knowledge and experience. I partook of it without hesitation. It likely had a spare body somewhere, but a vessel is just a vessel. Without a soul, even a hatched dragon is nothing more than a mindless beast. As a juvenile, it wouldn’t pose a threat anyway. Dragon meat is a delicacy, so if it ever does hatch, I’ll simply hunt it again.
As for the meat of the Gluttony Dragon? It was delicious. Since our group couldn’t possibly finish it all, I sold the surplus to a nearby town. They won’t be wanting for meat for a long time. I also repurposed the scales, horns, bones, and organs as crafting materials. As a result, everyone’s gear was overhauled, significantly boosting both our offensive and defensive capabilities.
Our party’s aesthetic had turned entirely black, though.
Regardless, we finally stood before the Demon King’s castle.
”I expected something a bit more… sinister,” Yamato said.
I understood her sentiment. Whether in games or manga, the Demon King’s fortress is usually depicted under swirling dark clouds, choked with black ivy and radiating an eerie, oppressive atmosphere. But the reality was the opposite. The sky was a cloudless, brilliant blue. The castle itself was white and pristine. While not overly ornate, it looked like a normal, well-maintained palace.
We knew what to expect thanks to Yamihama’s memories, but for the others, the gap between imagination and reality left them speechless. If you think about it, it makes sense.
”People live here,” I noted. “A place with good sunlight and cleanliness is just better. I certainly wouldn’t want to live in one of those crumbling ruins from the Holy Church’s hero stories.”
”True,” Yamato admitted. “I suppose I wouldn’t want to live in a house that isn’t kept up, either.”
Now that we had reached our destination, the question was how to proceed. We were definitely going inside, but oddly enough, the castle gates were standing wide open.
”Have they always been open, or are they inviting us in?” I wondered.
”It’s the former, noja,” Bolgano said with a boisterous laugh. “The Demon King is immensely popular with the people. Audiences are granted freely, zoi.”
…I wondered if the Demon King was being a bit too casual.
If Bolgano was right, we could simply walk in. Still, I wasn’t taking any chances. I ordered the duo, Alice and Sango, to wait in the vehicle. The rest of us could at least hold our own if things turned south. The real concern was Yamato and Ise-they were wild cards.
”Listen,” I said, my voice dropping. “Unless they initiate combat, do not lay a hand on anyone. Especially the non-combatants.”
”…I can’t promise that,” Yamato muttered.
”All demon-kin are the enemy,” Ise added coldly.
I clicked my tongue at their relentless prejudice.
”Let me tell you something,” I said. “The last Hero who came here let their hostility get out of hand. They earned the Demon King’s wrath and triggered the Ogre-kin invasion led by Bolgano. If you two start trouble, the people of Envyos⁵ are the ones who will pay the price. If you don’t want more blood on your hands, you don’t have to like them, but you will stay your blades. If you don’t… I’ll take your heads myself.”
”!” Yamato gasped, recoiling as I released a sliver of killing intent⁶. She understood the gap in our strength well enough to know I wasn’t joking.
”It doesn’t matter,” Ise insisted, her hand white-knuckled on her hilt. “The demon-kin are evil. They are the enemy. It is my duty to strike them down, no matter who they are.”
I looked at her, seriously considering whether I should just end her here.
”Ise, stand down,” Yamato commanded. “Follow Sieben-dono’s lead for now.”
”…If that is your wish, my lady.”
She wouldn’t listen to me, but she obeyed Yamato instantly. I suppose I could always use Royal Authority⁷ if it came to it.
”Hey, Master,” Honoka whispered. “Do we really need Yamato-san and the others? They’re just going to get in the way.”
”I agree,” Reese added. “They’re nothing but trouble.”
Their reluctance was valid, but Yamato and Ise had a specific purpose. They were sacrifices. Mashiro would have been one as well, but she had chosen to stay by my side. There was one other person as well, though they were no longer human and hardly worth my concern.
”Enough talking,” I said. “Let’s move.”
We were almost there.
* * *
We entered the castle through the main entrance. Pushing open the heavy doors, we stepped into the Great Hall. A massive staircase rose before us, leading to a set of imposing doors-likely the entrance to the throne room.
”Heyyy! I’m back, zoi!” Bolgano roared.
His voice boomed, echoing through the vast space. A few moments later, a woman emerged from the shadows and stood before us. She had goat-like horns curving from her temples, pale blue skin, and eyes where the sclera was pitch black and the irises a deep purple. Her long, raven hair flowed down to her waist. She wasn’t a Majin, an Ogre-kin, or an Undead. I recognized her species from Yamihama’s memories.
She was a Demon King.
However, the Demon King I knew appeared as a young girl; this woman looked only slightly older than me. Stranger still, she was dressed in a maid’s uniform.
”Welcome back, Lord Bolgano,” she said.
”Yeah, I’m home, Tsunami,” Bolgano replied.
The maid named Tsunami gave a respectful bow.
”Indeed. And welcome to you, humans. I am Tsunami, a maid in the direct service of the Demon King. I am also one of the Six Demon Generals⁸, holding the seat of the Water General. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
She performed a graceful curtsy. But despite her polite demeanor…
”!”
”Urgh…”
Everyone except Yukiko and me buckled. They were suddenly hit by an overwhelming aura of dread. Tsunami hadn’t even moved, yet the sheer pressure she radiated was leagues beyond Bolgano’s.

”Caught in Tsunami’s wake, are you?” Bolgano laughed heartily. “Can’t be helped. She’s the strongest of the Six Demon Generals, after all.”
The reason Yukiko and I were unfazed was simple: we were stronger than anyone else in the room. To us, this pressure was nothing. But for Honoka and the others, it was like facing the Barghest all over again-worse, even. Even the Gluttony Dragon hadn’t felt this suffocating. Tsunami was on an entirely different level. I was glad I’d left the others in the car; they would have fainted instantly.
”Well, my job is done,” Bolgano said. “I don’t know what you plan to do with the Demon King… but I hope you don’t choose to be enemies.”
Guiding us here had been the extent of our deal.
”I’ll see what I can do,” I replied. That depended entirely on the Demon King’s attitude. I didn’t actually care about her life one way or the other.
”Right. Until next time, then.”
Bolgano turned and disappeared through a side door.
”Now then,” Tsunami said, glancing at us. “I believe you requested an audience with the Demon King. Please, follow me.”
I wondered how this would play out. I followed Tsunami, taking the stairs one step at a time.

Summary:
Sieben’s party reaches the unexpectedly clean and white Demon King’s castle after three months of grinding levels. He keeps his more volatile companions, Yamato and Ise, in check with threats of death to ensure they don’t provoke the demon-kin. Upon arrival, they are greeted by Tsunami, a powerful maid who is actually the strongest of the Six Demon Generals.
—
Trivia:
- The Dragon Orb contains the memories and experience of the Gluttony Dragon.
- Sieben explicitly refers to Yamato and Ise as ‘sacrifices’.
- Alice and Sango are waiting in a vehicle outside the castle.
- Tsunami looks older than the Demon King Sieben remembers from Yamihama’s memories.
- Sieben’s level is now 76, leading the party
—
Character Insight:
Sieben shows a complete lack of empathy for his ‘Hero’ companions, viewing them merely as tools/sacrifices. Tsunami’s introduction establishes a massive power gap between the Demon Generals and typical monsters.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The ‘clean castle’ trope subverts the typical ‘Dark Lord’ aesthetic found in classic JRPGs.
