Araya v1c2

Volume 1 Chapter 2 Reincarnation Tutorial

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I woke up sprawled on some kind of floor. It had a strange feel to it-neither hard nor soft. My body and clothes felt the same as always. My arms and legs moved fine. I thought for sure I was dead, but was I actually saved?

 No, no way.

I remember the sensation of my bones shattering. I specifically remember my head getting crushed. You don’t just walk away from that.

Looking around while I processed things, I saw other people collapsed just like me. It looked like some were already getting up. About thirty people in total? The gender ratio was roughly half and half; age-wise, they ranged from high schoolers to folks in their sixties.

Among them, I could see Osamu, his wife, and Ina-shi. His wife and Ina-shi aside, Osamu had his stomach blown out before being buried, so he was definitely a goner. Even if he survived, he’d be in rehab for years. This felt less and less like a “miraculous rescue.”

A white room with all these “unnatural” vibes… A white room? Wait… is this the “God’s Realm¹” you go to before an Isekai reincarnation!? If we’re talking Isekai staples, it’s all about cheat powers, being an absolute beast, and living the dream with a harem. I’m open to debate on that, but it’s the gold standard.

Back in the day, I’d watch those classic RPGs and anime and really yearn for a fantasy world. I used to have these impossible delusions like, “If magic existed, even a weakling like me would be popular,” only to feel hollow about it later. Still, I couldn’t ditch the dream, so I spent my time devouring web novels.

If we’re talking cheats, “Skill Theft,” “Skill Copy,” or “Creation” are the go-tos. But if you gave cheats to this many people, the world might actually collapse, so maybe not.

Actually, it’s not even guaranteed to be a fantasy world. If it’s a hardcore medieval setting with zero magic, or a world where raw muscle is the only thing that matters, I’ll struggle just to stay alive. This is bad. I was getting hyped, but depending on the destination, I could be dead on arrival.

 ”Araya-kun,” a voice called out.

 ”Hm?”

While I was busy oscillating between hope and despair, someone had approached me. Another acquaintance.

A woman who joined the company the same year as me, Saeki Yuko. We had a bit of a history-we both had our mental health trashed by the job at the same time, we’d bitch to each other about work when we were bored, and occasionally went out for drinks in a group. For the record, she got married a few years ago. I think I heard she had a kid recently.

She’d been put on a pedestal since she was young for being “pretty and smart,” so by the time we hit our late twenties, our personalities just didn’t click anymore. I’d been keeping my distance for the last few years. It’s a workplace with very few women, so it’s natural for the guys to be extra considerate, but her “it’s only natural for men to do everything, and natural for men to pay more” attitude was parasitic and honestly disgusting.

”Do you know where we are? Also… have you seen my child?” Saeki asked.

 ”No clue…” I replied.

Saeki is a “light” otaku at best-reads a bit of manga. She probably wouldn’t get the whole “Isekai Reincarnation” thing. I had no interest in playing nice with her now, so I just gave her a non-committal answer.

”Why are we even here? I remember the train accident… well, I remember being caught in the tunnel collapse,” Saeki muttered.

”Eh? Saeki-san, you were on that train too?” I asked.

Even she was on it? As we talked, it seemed the rest of the group finally woke up. Crap, Osamu and the others spotted me.

”Good morning, everyone,” a voice announced.

Suddenly, the upper body of a woman sitting on a pedestal emerged from the floor. Green hair, green eyes, green clothes. She was, naturally, beautiful. I guess that’s a given for a (Provisional) Goddess. And she was certainly “well-endowed.” They were incredible, perfectly shaped breasts-the kind that made you want to reach out and squeeze.

”I understand you must be confused by the sudden turn of events, so I shall explain. I am a Reincarnator Support Terminal. In your terms, I am an AI. You are all about to be reincarnated into another world. It is what some of you know as ‘Isekai Reincarnation’.”

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who knew the term. Makes sense. It’s been a huge trend lately.

”The destination is a medieval-style fantasy world-a world of swords and magic. Furthermore, unlike your previous world, the male-to-female ratio is approximately 1:2. It is a world where women are more numerous.”

Oh ho! This is sounding good. Is it a “Moral Reversal” world too!? Well, she didn’t go that far, so I probably shouldn’t expect to be worshipped just for being a guy.

A world with magic, though… that’s the dream. I definitely want to chant something like “Thou who art darker than twilight…” and fire off a nuke! But these days, “No-Chant” casting is the trend. It has fewer openings. Decisions, decisions…

”There are not only humans, but also Elves, Dwarves, Beastmen, and more. The social system is feudal, and slavery exists. As such, it is a world with many differences from the environment you are accustomed to. Please exercise caution.”

The holy trinity of fantasy races! I have to meet them (it’s a calling). You have to be careful with feudalism, though-one slip-up and your head physically leaves your shoulders for “Lèse-majesté².” That’s just how it goes.

”The purpose of your reincarnation is to defeat the Demon King. One among you is the ‘Hero.’ Please cooperate with your allies to subjugate the Demon King. Only one person will hold the Hero Class, but the rest of you will be granted privileged classes as well. The time limit for the Demon King’s subjugation is approximately three years. If left alone any longer, the Demon King will cause immense damage, and at worst, the world will perish.”

I see, I see. A textbook setup, right down to the deadline. So, what’s my Class gonna be? I’d rather have magic than be a front-line grunt. A production cheat would be great, but I don’t have enough specialized knowledge to make that work.

”To aid in the three-year mission, I shall grant you all a divine blessing: 10x Experience Gain. Please use it effectively.”

Nice! I’ll take it. Since every reincarnator gets it, it’s not like I’ll have a leg up on the others, but it’s definitely a cheat.

”Because the Demon King is powerful, the battle will be grueling unless you are in your physical prime, even with an excellent Class. Therefore, I shall adjust your bodies to their peak-specifically, to around eighteen years of age.”

Grateful for that too. Starting over in your late thirties is a slog. That means Osamu and Ina-shi are getting a reset too.

”That concludes the explanation. Are there any questions?” the AI asked.

”If I may…” Saeki said, raising her hand.

I wish she wouldn’t draw attention to us…

 ”Go ahead,” the AI replied.

”Reincarnation means we’re dead, right? Can we go back to our old world?” Saeki asked.

”That is correct. You cannot return.”

”…I see. I should have had my child with me. What happened to them?” Saeki asked.

”The child did not meet the conditions for reincarnation, so they were not summoned.”

”Can’t you call them now? What are the conditions?” Saeki asked.

”I cannot. The conditions are classified.”

”No way… after all that work… finally…” Saeki muttered.

I was curious about the conditions too, but it sounded like a brick wall. I didn’t have a wife or kids, so I didn’t have anything to say to Saeki.

”May I ask something as well?” a man asked.

A guy who looked like a clean-cut corporate type stepped up.

 ”Proceed,” the AI said.

”Thank you. Does everyone here have to go fight the Demon King?” the man asked.

”No. Normally, the Hero’s party of five or six people handles the main combat. For safety and efficiency, I recommend a party of that size. The Hero’s party that defeats the Demon King will be granted noble status in the summoning country. You will be able to live a very affluent life. The rest of you are free to work in a city or live as adventurers. Please enjoy your new lives.”

So everyone except the Hero’s party is a free agent? I’ll take that. I’d be in a spot if “Demon King Subjugation” was mandatory. Being in the Hero’s party sounds like a pain, even with the perks.

”Might I ask one thing as well, pray tell?” a man asked.

Here we go, a weirdo. A chubby, otaku-looking guy.

 ”Go ahead,” the AI said.

”Is it possible to change one’s race during the transition?” the man asked.

”It is possible, but I do not recommend it. Reincarnation follows certain rules; you would be spawned alone in a distant land where that race is common. Because your body would be reconstructed at the molecular level, you would lose your memories. Furthermore, the divine blessing I mentioned would be revoked. Do you still wish to change?”

”…No. I’ll stay as I am, please,” the man replied.

The shock snapped him right out of his act. I was secretly hoping for an Elf reincarnation, but I guess that’s a bust. Bummer.

”I also have a request, if I may!” another man called out.

Another one!? This time it was a lanky, scrawny guy.

 ”Speak,” the AI said.

”The Isekai staples-Appraisal, Language Comprehension, and Infinite Storage. Can we get that ‘Three-Piece Set’?” the man asked.

”Everything except Infinite Storage is possible. In its place, I will grant a blessing with the ‘Item Box’ skill.”

 ”Much obliged,” the man said.

They’re really shelling out the blessings. It’s a total service package. On the flip side, that probably means the Demon King is terrifyingly strong. This is sketchy; if I end up with a decent Class and get dragged into the Hero’s party, I might die. Please, just give me something like a High-Tier Swordsman-just enough of a cheat to be comfortable!

”Are there any other questions? …It seems not. Lastly, a piece of advice. You will have strengths and weaknesses, but every Class is a divine gift. Do not be arrogant, and do not despair. If you continue to strive, you will surely be rewarded. May happiness find you all,” the AI said.

As she finished speaking, my body began to glow. I guess the tutorial is over.

Now then, let’s see what Class I get.

 - Every reincarnator receives a 10x Experience Gain blessing.

 - The group will be physically rejuvenated to age eighteen.

 - Only one person among the thirty is the ‘Hero’.

 - There is a strict three-year time limit to defeat the Demon King

 —

 Character Insight:

Araya displays deep-seated resentment toward Saeki Yuko and a general lack of empathy for her lost child, prioritizing his own survival and potential ‘cheat’ benefits in the new world.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The protagonist’s internal monologue references ‘Thou who art darker than twilight’, a direct homage to the Dragon Slave chant from the series ‘Slayers’.
