Chapter 261 Goddess Aurelia ⑨
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”What on earth are you people thinking!?”
My fury reverberated through the vaulted silence of the throne room. The King, perched upon his high seat, played it off with a hollow smirk. His face openly betrayed his contempt for me, making no effort to hide his mockery.
”To what exactly are you referring, Board Chairman of Magic Academy Viede¹?” he asked.
”The declaration of war against Greedia²! What has that country ever done to us!?”
”They haven’t done a thing,” the King replied. “Not yet. But the Goddess has branded them the enemies of all mankind. If that is the case, we have no choice but to wipe them from the map, wouldn’t you agree?”
I let out a heavy sigh. On that day, an oracle had reached every soul on the continent: a new Demon King³ had appeared, and a nation was sheltering him. That Demon King was Sieben, and his protector was Greedia.
(Listen to yourself…) I thought. (We’ve traded with Greedia for years. Sieben saved the very city we’re standing in. There’s no reason to be enemies, yet here we are.)
”That ‘heroic’ act was surely a setup by his own hand,” the King scoffed. “Besides, because of that Demon King’s sake, an excellent Governor lost his position!”
”A man who abandoned his family and fled like a coward can hardly be called ‘excellent,’” I snapped. “You wouldn’t know a good leader if one bit you. Your judgment is completely compromised.”
The current King of Envyos⁴ was, quite simply, a walking personification of an inferiority complex. Mediocre in every respect, he was desperate to leave a mark on history, no matter how foolish the cost. I realized then that my words were falling on deaf ears. The authority of Goddess Aurelia was absolute here.
My hair began to shift, the silver bleeding into a deep, ink-black. The room fell into a stunned hush. They recognized this face from the portraits-the face of Oribe Mira. The Mother of the Nation⁵ of this very country.
”How pathetic,” I whispered, glaring at my descendant. “To think a child of my blood could be so easily deceived.”
”So what!?” the King shrieked, his face twisting in a mix of terror and rage. “You’re a fraud! The true Mother of the Nation would support my divine mission. To think the Board Chairman of Viede would stoop to such a cheap disguise… have you no shame!?”
He was hopeless. I had stayed my hand for generations out of a sense of duty to my lineage, but that was my failing.
”I understand. Have it your way,” I said, turning on my heel. “But mark my words: no matter what happens next, do not look to me for salvation. You’re on your own now.”

The following day, a group of teachers led by the Principal crowded into my office.
”What do you want? I don’t recall calling for you.”
I was in a foul mood, and the air in the room grew heavy with my mounting irritation.
”Carmilla-dono, we require your immediate resignation,” the Principal said, wearing a greasy smile. “We know you defied the King. We cannot entrust the academy to a traitor.”
”Is that so?” I asked. I scanned the room. Even those who once respected me were nodding along.
”You offered an admonition to His Majesty… you’ve gone mad.”
Ah, it’s no use. All of these people are hopeless. I realized then that everyone here was the same.
”Fine. If you want this chair so badly, take it. But I’m taking everything else with me.”
”I think not,” the Principal sneered. “Leave your belongings. They belong to the state now.”
”Take them by force, then.”
I drew my staff from my Item Box, mana blades flickering into existence with a sharp hum. The group recoiled. They had the spine to insult me, but not the stomach for a real fight. I pointed a finger toward them, a tiny spark of Sieben-kun’s concentrated sorcery dancing on my nail.
”Get to this level before you try to challenge me again,” I told them.
I pushed past the frozen cowards and walked out of the Magic Academy Viede-and Envyos-for good.

”…And that’s the long and short of it,” Carmilla said. She sat on our sofa, taking a slow sip of her tea.
Between the mess in Wrathfiria and now Envyos, everyone seemed to be losing their minds. They clearly underestimated Greedia’s quality. We might be few, but every one of our soldiers is worth ten of theirs.
”You’ve had a long trip,” I said. “I’ll set you up at an inn so you can get some real rest.”
”Really? I’ll take you up on that,” she replied.
”I will…”
”Polilina also rest. No matter how much of a dwarf you are, fatigue is surely piling up.”
”…Understood.”
I wrote out a letter of introduction for the high-class hotel we used and handed it to them.
”Alpha, show them the way. Treat them with the utmost courtesy.”
”As you wish, Master,” Alpha replied with a graceful bow.
As they left, I looked out the window. Aurelia’s shadow was long, but she shouldn’t expect everything to go her way. We needed to ramp up recruitment, and we needed to do it fast.

Lilina: (Stare…)
Carmilla: “She’s really glaring at me. Did I do something…?”
Alpha: (Is this what they call a ‘bloody scene,’ Master…?)
No, Alpha. It really isn’t.
