Volume 3 Chapter 8 Presents and Thanks

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I headed to the library in the afternoon. Since Liese¹ seemed able to read a little, I decided to let her study the alphabet by going through some picture books today.

I spent the time researching the Titles that were causing the Seal on Liese’s fire and water magic. It would be ideal if I could find a precedent for removing Titles entirely. According to my research, Liese’s “Two Conflicting Dragons” Title was a mystery beyond what I’d already heard at the Grünewald merchant guild. I did learn that similar Titles can manifest when races are naturally incompatible, like Elves and Dark Elves, but that didn’t help her current situation. Apparently, there are no races incompatible with Humans.

As for a removal method, there were no direct records. I found one case where an “Evil” type Title vanished after decades of atonement, but nothing for non-malicious Titles. I wondered if I could overwrite the effects by acquiring a different Title. It’s similar to how an Evil Title can override others – though technically, the effects just merge. However, acquiring a Title after birth is notoriously difficult and time-consuming. I had no idea if it was even possible. (Scrapped that idea…)

Another approach was using Skills to manipulate Status, but there was no information on that. I couldn’t tell if it was impossible or if the required Skill level was just too high. Most people in this world simply accept Titles as permanent, so they probably never even thought about “removing” them. Since I can raise my Skill levels as long as I have time, I decided to look for a Skill that could do the job. My options were to change the effect, change the Title, or delete it entirely. Or maybe I could just Seal the Title? I had to be careful; if I messed this up, it might be irreversible.

When closing time arrived, Clarissa-san approached me.

”Good evening. How is that item coming along?”

”Good evening. I actually just finished the prototype.”

Finally, the full cosmetics set was ready. It had taken a while because of all the trial and error. Since Clarissa-san mentioned she liked glamorous scents and seasonal flowers, I’d gone with a rose-based fragrance.

 ”Here is the promised gift.”

”Oh my! Thank you so much!”

She was so happy that she lunged forward and hugged me. As I expected, she had a soft, feminine figure, and I felt her large breasts squish against me. Since Clarissa-san was such a beautiful woman, it made my heart skip a beat.

”Ah, excuse me. It must be a nuisance being hugged by an old woman like me. I just got carried away…”

”Not at all. I’m happy to be hugged by you, Clarissa-san. Like I told you before, you’re a beautiful woman to me. You aren’t ‘old’ by any stretch.”

Clarissa-san was strangely insecure about her age. It was a mystery to me, but I supposed that was just the standard common sense in this world.

”Anyway, it’s still a prototype, so please let me know what you think. If there’s anything to improve, I want to know.”

”I understand. I’ll tell you all about it the next time we meet.”

Her face turned serious for a second, but her joy soon bubbled back up into a bright smile. I was pretty sure I hadn’t messed anything up, so I hoped she’d be satisfied.

I left the library and headed toward the inn. I’d asked the Gale Party to meet me nearby today. It felt a bit cruel to drag Liese along on a date, so I planned to have her say a quick hello and then head back to the room.

 ”Good evening, Dietlinde-san.”

 ”Good evening, Daisuke-san.”

She was cool as ever, but she looked exhausted. She was always taking care of us, and I couldn’t just let her walk away looking like that.

 ”Forgive me for a moment.”

 (‘Great Heal’ ‘Refresh’)

It was the “Fatigue Recovery Set (Provisional)” I’d used on Mercedes earlier.

 ”Is this… healing magic?”

 ”Yes. Was it a bother?”

”No, the fatigue is gone. I feel much better. Thank you.”

Her complexion improved slightly as she thanked me.

”I’m glad. I can’t help with your actual work, but I can do this much for you anytime. Just don’t push yourself too hard.”

 ”I won’t. Excuse me then.”

Unlike a freelancer like me, Dietlinde-san really seemed to have it rough. Then again, most adventurers lived on a razor’s edge, so it wasn’t like any of this was easy.

* * *

For my date with the Gale Party, I’d picked a slightly upscale restaurant. I went back to the inn to change into some nicer clothes first. I’d decide on giving out the cosmetics based on Clarissa-san’s feedback later, but I had a different present for the girls tonight.

 ”Sorry to keep you waiting.”

”No, it’s fine. You’re right on time.”

 ”Daisuke is always early.”

”I can’t exactly keep the three of you waiting.”

I’d given them a heads-up about the restaurant, so they were all dressed a bit more elegantly. Ines wore a green long-dress – a calm, mature look, though it was rare to see her showing her shoulders. Juliet also went for an off-the-shoulder look with a mini tube-top dress, though her usual hot pants were nowhere to be seen. She still looked as energetic as ever. Sylvie had changed things up with a Goth-Loli style dress, looking adorable as usual. First, I introduced Liese.

”A few things happened, and I’ve decided she’ll be adventuring with me. Liese, introduce yourself.”

”I am Liese, the slave. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

”Nice to meet you. I’m Ines.”

 ”I’m Juliet.”

 ”And I’m Sylvie.”

”I’ll explain how Liese ended up with me later. Just a greeting for now.”

I sent Liese back to the inn and took the three girls to the restaurant. I’d booked a private room so I could give them their presents without making a scene.

 ”Thanks for coming tonight. Cheers!”

 ”Cheers!”

”This makes twenty-five dates with you three.”

”Has it really been that many? Only five left then…”

”The night is still young, you know?”

”Ines is getting ahead of herself.”

”W-Well, even if you say that…! Weren’t you two having fun?”

 ”Of course we were.”

”Yes, it’s been a wonderful time.”

I was glad to see they were enjoying themselves, even if Ines was acting a bit sensitive. I took the opportunity to explain the situation with Liese.

”I get it now, but it’s still surprising that you’d buy a slave, Daisuke.”

 ”It is.”

”Just so we’re clear, I haven’t laid a finger on her.”

”Knowing you, I’m sure that’s true.”

We’d been together long enough that Juliet didn’t jump to conclusions anymore, which was a nice change.

”Buying a slave is your business, but I wish you’d consulted us about the adventurer side of things.”

”Sorry about that. I just moved too fast on my own.”

She wasn’t against the slave purchase itself, but she seemed miffed about being left out of the loop. Yumiko-san had chewed me out for the same thing.

”No, you don’t need to apologize. I’m being selfish by asking.”

”Well, our levels have drifted apart, anyway.”

”But because of that, you were there to save us. You didn’t do anything wrong, Daisuke-san.”

”She’s right. You saved our lives.”

”Forget about that. I’m just happy I get to date you three. No debts between us, right?”

I kept the tone light to lift the mood. It worked, and the girls started smiling again.

* * *

Once dinner settled down, it was time for the surprise.

”Could I have your attention for a second?”

 ”What is it?”

I’d been wanting to make something to help them deal with the Mummies on the twelfth floor, and I’d finally finished something I was proud of.

”I made these myself. I hope they help with your dungeon dives.”

 ”You made these?”

 ”You’re surprisingly handy.”

 ”What are they?”

I pulled the gifts from my Item Box. They were a bit conspicuous, so I was glad we were in a private room.

”They have Trap Detection and Dark Magic Resistance. The resistance should be a big help on the twelfth floor. I made them as pendants so you can wear them even under your armor.”

”Wow, these are actually incredibly useful.”

”I hope so. I carved a motif for each of you into the silver plates. Sylvie has a fairy, Juliet has a greatsword and a cat, and Ines has a sword. I included a wind theme for all of them.”

I’d bought the chains and plates at a shop, but the rest was all me. It had taken forever to get the designs right. To put Skill effects into items, you need Magic Tool Crafting and Enchantment. I’d imbued three Magic Stones with one Skill each and linked them together. Magic Stone² placement used Alchemy Skills.

”Also, I’ve locked them to your specific signatures. Even if someone steals them, they won’t work. Just touch the stone to register.”

I’d used Contract Magic to limit the users. None of these Skills were impossible to learn, but doing it all solo was a massive chore.

 ”You really went all out…”

 ”This is… incredible.”

”Is it that big a deal?”

”An item with multiple effects is rare. Trap Detection is something every adventurer would die for.”

”And you added a user-lock? You really like making things difficult for yourself, don’t you?”

”I made them for you three. I want you three to be the ones using them.”

They just stared at the pendants, not taking them. I started to worry. “Wait, are you not going to take them?”

”No, we’re just stunned. Thank you.”

”Thank you so much for doing this for us.”

Juliet and Sylvie accepted theirs and registered immediately.

”Ines? Did you not want one?”

”No, I’ll take it. But… could you put it on for me?”

 ”Sure. You okay with that?”

 ”Yes. Please.”

I helped her register it first, then moved to put the chain around her neck. Since she was facing me, it felt like we were almost in an embrace.

 ”Hey, Daisuke.”

 ”Yeah?”

I was struggling a bit with the clasp. Being this close was a nice bonus, but I tried not to overstep.

”Thank you. For everything. I wanted to give you something back, too.”

 ”Oh, really?”

I couldn’t see her face, but she leaned into me, making it easier to reach the clasp.

 ”So…”

 ”There, got it.”

I went to step back, but Ines suddenly wrapped her arms around me and held me tight.

 ”Whoa!”

 ”Ines!?”

 ”Oh my ♪”

Ines wasn’t wearing her armor, and her softness was overwhelming. It was a terrible thought to have at a moment like this, but the sensation of her breasts against my chest was incredible.

”When I was trapped by those Orcs, I really thought I was going to die. You jumped into that nightmare all by yourself to save us. I can’t tell you how grateful I was… how happy I was.”

 ”…I see.”

Juliet and Sylvie stayed quiet, letting Ines speak. I’d never dealt with something like this, so I could barely find the words.

”You made the reward a date, and that saved me. Otherwise, I might have ended up as a slave to pay off the debt.”

 ”That’s just what I wanted.”

”Even so. And on these dates, you always call me beautiful and cute. It makes me so happy. And these presents… you made them just for us. Thank you.”

”Ines, you are beautiful. And you are cute.”

”No, I’m plain. I’m not feminine, and the way I talk is stiff. No one else says things like that to me.”

I hugged her back gently. She really was adorable.

”Ines, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. I think you’re beautiful.”

 ”Like Juliet and Sylvie?”

”You have a cuteness that’s all your own.”

Ines finally looked up, a tearful smile on her face.

”Thank you, Daisuke. Is this enough of a thank-you?”

”Of course. I’m just happy we’ve become so close.”

 ”It’s more than that.”

 ”Huh?”

”I’ve fallen in love with you, Daisuke.”

 ”…Whoa.”

I let out a dumb sound. Her smile was as radiant as a goddess.

”I’m not trying to monopolize you, so don’t worry about that.”

 ”Right… okay.”

In this world, polygamy was normal, so she was already factoring that in. Since I was already making moves on Regina-san, Clarissa-san, and Dietlinde-san, it was actually a relief. (Though maybe I shouldn’t be thinking that right now.)

 ”So, Daisuke? What about you?”

 ”I’m happy. Really happy.”

”No… I mean… will you go out with me?”

Ines asked, her green eyes wavering with anxiety.

 ”I’d be honored.”

 ”…Thank you.”

She smiled in pure relief. She hugged me again, squeezing tight.

”I’m… still not quite ready for the rest yet. Will you wait for me?”

”I’ll wait as long as you need.”

”Then… let this be enough for today.”

She let go of my waist, took my face in her hands, and kissed me. It was a brief, earnest touch, but I could feel all the heat of her emotions. When she pulled back, she was bright red, but she didn’t look away.

 ”You’ll wait for me?”

 ”Always. Until you’re ready.”

* * *

When we finally separated, Juliet was standing there frozen, and Sylvie was watching with a fascinated grin.

 ”Congratulations, Ines-san ♪”

 ”Thank you.”

”Ines… I had no idea you felt that way.”

”Sorry for not telling you. What about you, Juliet? You want to join us?”

 ”I’m not really…”

Juliet stammered, her face turning pink. Her reaction wasn’t as bad as I’d feared. It felt like all my effort was finally paying off. Sylvie was still just smiling, so I couldn’t tell what she was thinking. I still had a long way to go there.

But finally, it happened. My first girlfriend in this new world was a beautiful, earnest girl.
