Volume 4 Chapter 7 Tying Up Loose Ends

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Gerta’s bluntness left me stunned. Was she just riding a post-battle high? I’d never heard of Beastmen having a culture where the loser offers up their body to the victor. It didn’t seem right; people like Juliet were proof enough that it wasn’t a universal rule.

”What exactly do you mean by that?” I asked. “Is this just the adrenaline talking?”

”It’s not just the fight,” Gerta said, her eyes locked on mine. “It’s your strength, Daisuke… right? That’s what did it. Your swordsmanship, your brawling-it was all top-shelf. Even that magic you used to heal me at the end… it was a hell of a rush. I haven’t run into a man like you in a long time.”

I decided to ignore the fact that she sounded unsure of my name. Like Liese, people in this world seemed to have a profound admiration-or perhaps a primal attraction-to raw power. Since monster attacks were a daily reality, gravitating toward the strong was likely a survival strategy. It was just the way of the world.

”I hear you,” I said, glancing back at her group. “But is your party really okay with this?”

”Huh? Why would they give a damn?” Gerta asked, looking genuinely confused. Behind her, the members of her unit shrugged with “none of our business” expressions.

”Look, I’m not asking you to sire a litter or anything,” Gerta added. “It’s not like I’m looking to retire from adventuring just yet.”

”A litter…?” I replied. (If that’s what she’d meant, I would’ve had to turn her down flat. That’s a bridge too far.) Even if she wanted it, I couldn’t just knock Gerta up and walk away. That would be the height of irresponsibility.

Besides, even if I were looking to start a family, Ines-my actual girlfriend-would be first in line. If they were on equal footing, well, children are a gift from the heavens, so who knows? But that wasn’t a conversation for today.

”Is a girl like me not your type, Daisuke?” Gerta asked, her face falling slightly.

”No, it’s not that at all,” I replied. When I first saw her a year ago, I thought she was way too wild for me, but life in this world has definitely widened my strike zone. Her height, her ripped physique, those jagged teeth-they were Gerta’s unique charms, not flaws. I’d finally started to see it that way.

”Alright, look,” I said. “I’ve got some paperwork to do regarding Camilla’s ownership transfer. Can we meet up later?”

”You’ll really do it? Thanks,” Gerta said. “Later’s fine, but make it quick. Honestly, I’m ready to head to the inn right this second.”

I hadn’t noticed in the heat of the moment, but her face was flushed, and her breath was coming in short, heavy hitches. (If I had lost that fight by a hair, would she have dragged me to an inn right then and there?) We agreed to meet at the entrance of the shopping district as soon as I was finished.

I thanked Bruno, Guard Karl, and Inquisitor Haida before we wrapped up the business regarding Camilla. Karl provided the documentation needed to finalize the transfer of ownership. Since they were all on the clock, they wouldn’t accept any reward, but I made a mental note to bring them some sweets later as a thank-you.

Liese, Camilla, and Rin had been watching the whole spectacle from the stands. “I won, just like I promised, Camilla,” I said.

”Master…!” Camilla cried out, lunging into a tight hug. I patted her head, and she beamed at me. She really was adorable.

”As expected of my Master!” Liese chirped. She looked a little breathless herself, her tail thumping rhythmically against the floor. I wondered if watching the fight had revved her up too. (I hope she at least picked up some pointers.)

 ”…Thank you,” Rin murmured.

”You don’t need to thank me for this, Rin,” I said.

”…I couldn’t have beaten her,” Rin replied.

”Well, it’s all about the matchup,” I said.

If Rin had fought her, it might have ended with that first lunge. If she’d seen it coming, maybe an Ice Wall could’ve bought some time? No, an instant Ice Wall wouldn’t be strong enough to do more than delay someone like Gerta for a heartbeat.

Charging it with more mana would work, but Gerta wouldn’t give her the luxury of time. Rin was just a hard counter for her style. “You’ve grown fond of Camilla, haven’t you, Rin? Don’t be a stranger. Come by and see her whenever you like.”

”…Is that okay?” Rin asked, hesitating. I looked at Camilla, who gave a firm nod.

”Rin-san helped me too,” Camilla said. “I’m really grateful to her.”

”…Understood,” Rin said. “I will definitely come to visit.”

Since Camilla was staying with me, that meant I’d be seeing more of Rin too. That was a win in my book.

”Well then, time to get this ownership transfer sorted,” I said.

”Yes, Master!” Camilla chirped, her fluffy tail wagging like a blur. I could technically perform the Contract Magic¹ myself, but doing it outside of a registered guild is a crime. Plus, I needed the state to recognize the change. We headed for the Grünewald Merchant Guild where I first bought Liese.

As we were leaving the arena, we ran into Ines and the rest of the Gale Party.

 ”Daisuke!” Ines shouted.

”Ines! Whoa-!” I barely had time to react before Ines slammed into me with the force of a runaway freight train. (Did she just use Wind Magic to boost her tackle?) I managed to shove Camilla behind me just in time to catch her; if Camilla had been caught in the middle of that, she’d be flat as a pancake. It was just a shame we were both wearing armor; I couldn’t feel the softness of Ines’s chest at all.

”I heard you were dueling Gerta of the ‘Beast Fangs’!” Ines cried. “I was so worried!”

”Sorry. Things just kind of escalated,” I said. I was aiming for a peaceful resolution, but I’d had a feeling it would come down to a fight eventually.

”Are you hurt?! Are you still in one piece?!” Ines asked, her hands frantically patting me down to check for injuries.

”I’m alive and well, Ines,” I said. “You’re such a worrywart.” I had been hurt, but my healing magic had closed the wounds completely. There was no point in stressing her out with the details.

”Of course I am! I’m your gir… girlfriend… after all…!” Ines squeaked, her face turning a vivid shade of crimson.

 ”Oh, brother…” Juliet groaned.

”So, did you really go toe-to-toe with Gerta?” Juliet asked.

”Daisuke-san, is it over?” Sylvie added.

”Yeah,” I said. “We fought, and I won.”

It looked like the Gale Party had only just arrived and missed the actual duel. “Is Gerta really that big of a deal?” I asked.

”Uh, yeah,” Juliet replied. “She’s the vanguard for ‘Beast Fang,’ a B-Rank party made up entirely of apex beastmen. They’re famous. I was a little stressed for you, but I guess you pulled it off.”

”B-Rank adventurers are all local celebrities to some degree,” Sylvie added with a smile. “But I knew Daisuke-san would be fine.”

Ines was still malfunctioning from embarrassment, so Juliet and Sylvie did the talking.

”Heh, so you were worried about me, Juliet?” I teased.

”I-! No! …Well, maybe a little,” Juliet said. “I just thought even you might have hit a wall with Gerta.”

”And Sylvie, you had total faith in me?” I asked.

 ”Fufu, naturally,” Sylvie said.

Juliet was blushing and stammering now. Her usual “tough girl” act had completely crumbled, which was pretty cute, though she’d kill me if I said it out loud. Sylvie had her usual serene smile, and knowing she trusted me felt great.

”Thanks, guys,” I said. “But now that I’m B-Rank too, am I going to be a ‘celebrity’ now?”

”You’re an Otherworlder, so you already stood out,” Juliet said. “After beating Gerta today? You’ll be the talk of the town by tomorrow morning.”

”Ugh,” I groaned. (Great. I’m not even close to the ‘strongest’ yet, and now I’ve got eyes on me. I really stepped in it this time.)

”Why do you look like you just swallowed a bug?” Juliet asked.

”It just sounds like a giant headache,” I said.

”Fame brings nominated requests, which means better pay,” Sylvie pointed out. “It’s not all bad.”

”I guess…” I said. But the damage was done. I’d just have to try and keep a low profile from here on out.

”So, how did you even end up in a duel with her?” Ines asked, finally finding her voice. “And does it have something to do with that girl?”

I walked them through the whole saga, from the encounter in the dungeon to the final showdown.

”I see,” Ines said. “Given the circumstances, you didn’t have much choice.”

 ”Typical Daisuke behavior,” Juliet added.

”Camilla-chan is happy with this, right?” Sylvie asked.

”Y-yes! Um… who are these ladies…?” Camilla asked, looking overwhelmed.

”These three make up the party ‘Gale.’ They’re C-Rank adventurers. This is Ines, Juliet, and Sylvie,” I said.

 ”I’m Ines,” she said.

 ”I’m Juliet,” the other said.

”I’m Sylvie. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” the last said.

”I’m Camilla… nice to meet you…!” Camilla squeaked. She looked incredibly tense.

”Relax, Camilla,” I said. “You don’t need to be so stiff.”

”Exactly,” Juliet said. “Daisuke’s helped us out plenty too.”

”You’re part of the crew now, Camilla-chan,” Sylvie said.

”Um… Master…?” Camilla asked, looking confused.

”I’ll explain everything later,” I said. “Just know we’re all friends.”

”Anyway, I need to finish the ownership transfer,” I said. “Ines, are you free tomorrow afternoon?”

”We can’t go back into the dungeon yet, so my schedule is open,” Ines said. “Why?”

”I was hoping the two of us could go on a date,” I said. “Like I mentioned before.” (I’d already accidentally booked a dinner date with Clarissa for the day after tomorrow, so I wanted to make sure Ines got some quality time first. Between Gerta today and Clarissa later, tomorrow was my only window.)

”T-the two of us…?! I mean, yes!” Ines cried. “I’d love to! But I’m not mentally prepared…!”

”Don’t worry about ‘preparing.’ Let’s just have a normal day out,” I said. Ines seemed to be overthinking it, but I wasn’t trying to rush anything. Tomorrow happened to be Orange Day², too. I’ll push my visit to Regina to the day after that.

”Phew… okay,” Ines said. “Tomorrow afternoon it is.”

”Looking forward to it,” I said. Ines looked relieved. (I really shouldn’t push her too hard; we’ll take things at her pace.) “Juliet, Sylvie-I’ll catch up with you two the day after tomorrow.”

 ”You bet,” Juliet said.

 ”See you then,” Sylvie said.

At the Grünewald Merchant Guild, I asked for Marcel. Consistency is key with these things.

”Apologies for the wait,” Marcel said, appearing with a polite bow.

”No, sorry for dropping in unannounced again,” I said.

”I understand you’re here for an ownership transfer… though I see it isn’t for Liese,” Marcel said.

”Correct. This is Camilla,” I said. I handed over the papers from Karl. Marcel gave Liese a quick glance, seemingly relieved that I wasn’t getting rid of her.

”I see. Everything appears to be in order,” Marcel said. “Let us proceed with the Contract Magic.”

”Right. Camilla, come here,” I said.

”Yes, Master!” Camilla chirped. I’ll never quite understand the feeling of being bound as a slave, but Camilla seemed genuinely happy about it. Marcel performed the rite, the magical threads of the contract settled, and the legal registration was left in his hands. I paid the processing fee, and that was that.

”It seems Liese is working out well for you,” Marcel noted.

”She’s been a huge help,” I said. We chatted for a moment-business for him, small talk for me. As the seller, he was naturally invested in his “product’s” performance. A return would mean a price drop and a hit to the guild’s reputation. He’d looked a bit worried when I first walked in, so I probably gave the poor guy a heart attack thinking I was returning Liese.

”I expected to see you again, but I must admit, I didn’t expect it to be this soon,” Marcel said.

”Yeah… tell me about it…” I muttered. I’m happy to have Camilla, but I really don’t want to become a “frequent flier” at the slave market. It’s a bit awkward.

 ”Master…?” Camilla asked.

”Careful, Camilla,” Liese interjected. “Interrupting Master’s conversation is a lapse in slave etiquette.”

 ”I’m sorry…” Camilla said.

”It’s fine, Liese,” I said. “Don’t worry about it, Camilla. I brought you here because I want you around. I’m going to take good care of you.”

 ”Yes!” Camilla beamed.

”Well, we should get going,” I said. “Thanks for everything, Marcel.”

”The pleasure was mine,” Marcel said. “I have a feeling we shall meet again.”

I felt my eye twitch at his prophetic-sounding farewell. With a heavy sigh, I led my growing household out of the Grünewald Merchant Guild.

 —

 Summary:

Following the duel, Daisuke handles the administrative and social aftermath of his victory over Gerta. He officially transfers Camilla’s ownership at the Merchant Guild, introducing her to his circle of allies. The chapter concludes with Daisuke balancing upcoming dates with Ines and other romantic interests while processing his newfound B-Rank fame.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Gerta’s heavy breathing and flushed face suggest her attraction to Daisuke is physically intense, hinting at the upcoming ‘Star’ event.

 - The mention of ‘Orange Day’ serves as a deadline for Daisuke’s social management, showing the increasing complexity of his harem-like situation.

 - Marcel’s parting words suggest that Daisuke’s visit to the slave market won’t be his last, hinting at further expansions to his household

 —

 Character Insight:

Ines solidifies her status by publicly (and embarrassingly) referring to herself as Daisuke’s girlfriend. Meanwhile, the power dynamic between Liese and Camilla is established, with Liese taking on a senior ‘mentor’ role in slave etiquette.

 —

 Lore And Worldbuilding Context:

The B-Rank status is confirmed to carry significant social weight, effectively making Daisuke a local celebrity. The legal necessity of a Merchant Guild for ownership transfers highlights the regulated nature of the slave system in this world.

 —

 TL Notes:

The term ‘seed’ (種) is translated literally to maintain the raw beastman flavor of Gerta’s dialogue, while ‘moe’ tropes like ‘hau’ are localized to physical stammers to suit US English readers.

 TL Notes:
