”…And well, that’s the long and short of it,” I said.
The images projected behind me flickered and vanished. Each one had depicted a scene of triumph: the victories of my companions-Honoka and the others I had brought into Servitude¹-and the prowess of Yukiko in her Kin form. They stood in stark contrast to the pathetic defeats of my former classmates, the ones who had been resurrected as the Goddess’s apostles. Aurelia, having been forced to witness every moment, ground her teeth in silent fury.
”Honestly, those children were even more useless than I anticipated,” Aurelia spat, her voice dripping with contempt for the classmates she had revived. “To have such overwhelming power placed in their hands only to end up in this pathetic state… it’s disgraceful.”
I looked at her coldly. “So, you’re the only one left. What’s your move?”
”What’s my move? Don’t tell me you think you’ve already won,” Aurelia replied, looking down her nose at me. “I’ll admit, everyone else was wiped out, and I see now that you and your friends have more grit than I gave you credit for. But that’s all it is. You can’t defeat me. Not a God.”
She sneered, her eyes full of nothing but disdain. (Just keep talking…) I thought.
”Just so we’re clear,” I told her, “I don’t just ‘think’ I’ve won. The victory is already mine.”
Behind Aurelia, a massive, pitch-black shadow unhinged its jaws. She remained completely oblivious, her ego blinding her to the threat.
”Don’t be ridiculous! Listen to me: in this world, my word is absolute! As long as I am-!”
The shadow swallowed her whole before she could even let out a scream. From deep within the darkness of the shadow’s gullet, the wet, sickening sounds of bones snapping and grinding filled the air as she was slowly chewed to pieces.
”Like I said. I win. Now then…”
I turned my attention to Lil, who was still hopelessly entangled by the mass of tentacles.
”Ngh… ah… h-ha… ugh… ahhn…”
Lil let out soft, sweet cries as the appendages toyed with her body. Her face was flushed, her skin slick with a feverish sweat. It was a provocative sight, but seeing my Lil humiliated by those things filled me with a white-hot rage. Even with Aurelia dead, the tentacles continued their assault. (Are they just mindless monsters acting on instinct?)
”It’s time you let her go. Envy Flame!”
Black fire surged forward, racing along the length of the tentacles. The flames were precise, incinerating the monsters while leaving Lil untouched. The creatures let out a shrill, screeching death rattle as they were burned away, leaving nothing behind-not even ash. I moved quickly, catching Lil as she slumped forward, freed from her restraints. She didn’t seem to have any lasting injuries; she had simply been toyed with until her strength gave out.
Lil slowly fluttered her eyes open. “Lil, are you okay? Can you stand?” I asked.
”Ugh… D-Dear… yes… I’m… alright…”
”Thank god. Come on, let’s go home. Back to our house.”
”Yes… D-e-a-r. Hehe,” Lil whispered, clinging to me.
Then, it happened. A sudden, violent shock ripped through my abdomen. It felt as if a hot iron had been driven straight through my gut. A metallic warmth surged up my throat, choking me.
”Gah…!”
I hacked up a spray of blood and collapsed, my strength deserting me as I hit the dirt.
”Why… Lil…?”
”Hehe… ahahaha! Finally… finally! I’ve finally avenged him,” Lil said. Her right hand was drenched a vivid, gruesome red with my blood. She licked it clean, her expression shifting into something predatory and evil. “Ahahahaha!”

”Gah! Cough… hah…!”
I vomited more blood, the crimson stain spreading across the ground. There was a literal hole in my stomach where my internal organs had been shredded. It was the kind of wound no one should be able to survive.
”Lil… why…?”
”Why? I told you, didn’t I? I’m taking revenge for my beloved. For the Barghest you murdered.”
”Don’t… be… are you saying everything until now was an act?” I managed to wheeze out. “The love… the marriage… was it all a lie just for this?”
”Naturally,” Lil replied with a wicked smirk. “I had to do something to make you lower your guard, after all. You’re far too cautious otherwise.”
(Everything… an act?) I couldn’t believe it. There was no way.
”Then what about Van? And Mana! What about Leki!?”
”Van and Mana? I only gave birth to them because it was the best way to make you trust me. As for Leki… she grew far too attached to you. She was supposed to be his mate. But you stole her away from him. Hehe… so, tell me. How does it feel to be betrayed by the woman you love most?”
She ground her heel into my head, pressing my face into the dirt. She twisted her foot back and forth, relishing the sensation. If I looked up, I could see right between her legs, but in this state, I couldn’t even muster a flicker of arousal.
”Come on! Answer me, D-e-a-r! Ahahahaha!”
Lil’s mocking laughter echoed in my ears. It didn’t make sense. Even if she wanted revenge, no one would go this far-no mother would treat her own children like disposable tools. Which meant…
”……No.”
”Huh? What do you mean ‘no’?”
”You… aren’t Lil.”
”Pfft… ha! I wondered what you were going to say,” Lil said, scoffing at me. “I am the one and only Lil, your precious wife. Sorry to burst your bubble.”
She was mocking me, but I knew the truth. I was certain of it.
”You’re not Lil… cough… wheeze…”
”I’m telling you, I am! If you don’t believe me, feel free to use Appraisal. Go ahead.”
”…I don’t need to. I’m sure if I did, the result would say ‘Lil’ anyway.”
”Oh? So you do have a brain in there.”
”But you still aren’t her.”
”You really don’t know when to quit, do you?” she said, her voice dropping an octave. “Fine then. If I’m not Lil, who am I?”
There was only one person arrogant enough to pull this off.
”…Aurelia.”
A heavy silence hung in the air for a moment. Then, Lil erupted into a shrill, piercing laugh.
”Ding ding ding! We have a winner! That’s right, it’s me, Goddess Aurelia! Your beloved… D-e-a-r. Ahahahahahaha!”
She dropped the facade entirely, her true, twisted self finally baring its teeth.

• Leki – Lil’s eldest daughter, 140 cm tall, 70‑54‑69 measurements, dog/wolf ears and husky‑puppy look, once a stuffed toy now human. She wields a great axe as a big‑sisterly combatant, smooth‑skinned, can split a King Basilisk’s skull, keen‑eyed, calls the protagonist ‘Papa’, subordinate/family, discovered the floating temple. Also the Master’s daughter and second Kin, a Barghest of the highest order—powerful young girl with immense strength, loyal and energetic.
• Van – A baby (infant) belonging to the household. the protag and Lil’s infant son. Taken hostage by the Goddess’s Knights.
