Chapter 10 Mixed Blood

A single mother with two young daughters could never take in another child purely out of the goodness of her heart. Aki’s parents sent a monthly support payment to Takamine Kasumi-san that was more than enough to raise three children; there was only one condition: she could only keep Aki. Since it was just a foster arrangement and both were cute little boys, she naturally agreed to whoever paid the most. The world of adults is just that simple.
Aki had lived with the Takamine sisters for seven years-long enough for his “victim-template” charm to completely captivate them. Now, they were just one step away from finally tearing through the paper-thin barrier between them.
While Aki was busy with his “revisory massage”-essentially an excuse for groping-things were quite lively over at the Sasaki household. Around a small square table, four girls each occupied a side. Shinomura Yuki, thinking back to what Aki had said earlier, spoke up. “Reina-ane, why did Uesugi-kun suddenly get so strong?”
”Well, Uesugi-kun actually isn’t an ordinary person…” Reina replied, repeating the story Aki had used to fool them.
”If Uesugi-kun has Succubus blood, why didn’t you report it?” Yuki¹ asked, looking even more confused. There weren’t many students at Hidden Academy, but it wasn’t a huge crowd either; whenever a newcomer joined, everyone got a notification. If she had known Aki wasn’t human, she wouldn’t have blindly charged in only to be pinned to the floor.
”Reporting it would get us some resources, but we value Uesugi-kun more than those scraps,” Reina said.
”Uesugi-kun? Besides the Succubus blood, is there something else special about him?” Shinomura Yuki asked. Reina didn’t answer directly. Instead, she leaned in. “Yuki, feel the magic power inside your body carefully.”
Shinomura Yuki didn’t get it, but her body obeyed. Once the big sister spoke, she moved. “My magic has increased by about a fifth… but what does that have to do with Ues…” She stopped mid-sentence as it clicked. She hadn’t done any magic extraction today. Even with active cultivation, a single day shouldn’t have yielded this much. (Does Uesugi-kun really have that kind of ability…?) Shinomura Yuki looked dazed, her face flickering between joy and hesitation.
”Yuki, don’t get ahead of yourself. The first time gives the best results; it’ll taper off later,” Yukina said, cutting off Yuki’s budding fantasies. “Regarding that, we still have some questions.”
”Like what?” Shinomura Yuki asked.
”A Succubus boosting their own power through fluid exchange is normal, but helping their partner get stronger? That’s a first,” Yukina replied. “You’re a Mixed-blood Devil, Yuki. Know anything about that?”
Reina and the others weren’t devils; they were just humans with abilities. Their rank was too low to have contact with the High-class Devils or Fallen Angels of Hidden Academy.
”Succubi are a type of Devil, also called Nightmares,” Shinomura Yuki explained. “There’s absolutely no record of them helping the people they drain. Usually, they’re lucky if they don’t suck their partners bone-dry. But things are different now. With so many Mixed-bloods being born over the years, I can’t say it’s impossible.”
”Are there really that many?” Ruri asked. “Uesugi-kun said he has the bloodline, but didn’t say he is one. Is he a Mixed-blood too?”
”There are tons of Mixed-bloods, but powerful ones are rare,” Shinomura Yuki said. As a Mixed-blood herself, she’d researched this. “Human-Devil, Human-Dragon, Human-God, Dragon-Devil… there are even people with three or four bloodlines at once.”
Reina and the others were stunned. “Someone can really have four bloodlines?”
Shinomura Yuki shrugged. “Don’t look at me. I’m just a plain old Human-Devil mix.”
”Is there a way to test it?” Reina asked. The more they knew, the more curious they got. Shinomura Yuki shook her head. “No idea. Usually, you just look at the parents. Who would waste time researching a bloodline test?”
Aki-kun was a foster kid; his real parents were apparently overseas and never came back. The girls had been spending all their time glued to Aki lately. Between the “Dual Cultivation”² and resting, they’d talked a lot. You can’t just hit it and quit it every time, especially during truces. By now, Aki was basically their friend.
”You could ask President Gremory,” Shinomura Yuki suggested. “She’s the head of the Occult Research Club. She’s nice to her juniors, and they say she’s a High-class Devil. She might know.”
”The Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess…” Yukina sighed. “Forget it. She’s out of our league. We’d be better off asking Sakuratai Fuyuko from the next class.”
”Oh yeah, Sakuratai-san said she was a Succubus. Not sure if she’s a pure-blood, though,” Ruri noted.
Shinomura Yuki looked annoyed. “Mixed-bloods are common, but not that common. Even if we all look human, our tastes and habits are different.” She was right. Devils were split into countless sub-species, with Succubi being the most famous type.
”Fine. We’ll report Uesugi-kun after the tests next week,” Reina decided. “By then, he probably won’t be giving us much of a boost anyway.”
”So… are we still going to do it with him after that?” Shinomura Yuki asked tentatively.
”What? One round and he’s already conquered you?” Yukina teased.
”No!” Shinomura Yuki turned beet-red. “The guy is annoying, but compared to other men… I think Uesugi-kun is just better.”
It was a contradiction, but the other three understood. “Yuki, don’t worry about us looking for other guys,” Reina said, resting her chin on her hand. “I don’t know if it’s the Succubus blood, but every time I sleep with him, he just feels more… magnetic.”
”+1,” Yukina said.
”+1,” Ruri added.
”The thought of finding someone else… it’s just boring now,” Reina continued. “Forget other guys. Whenever I want to do it, Uesugi-kun’s face is the only thing I see.”
Men had been hitting on them, but they couldn’t help comparing them to Aki. The result was instant mental and physical repulsion. They didn’t even want to talk to other guys, let alone take things further.
