Chapter 507 Resuscitation Technique ①
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”So that’s why this got pushed back, huh~?” Nina-Mailse said.
”Ugh, don’t put it like that…” I replied.
It was two days after I’d been bagged by the three great women of the Royal Palace. I was currently visiting the “Second Lab”¹ northwest of the capital with my disciple, the Sacred Artificer Nina-Mailse. Our goal, of course, was to advance the research into resurrecting that veteran Ddo-Buddy, Warrior Alex.
The reason it took two days instead of one was that I’d spent all of yesterday helping my Love-Mage Satsuki move. Since she’d managed to get pregnant a step ahead of her friend, Sister Amelia, she was officially moving into my “Ddo-Buddy Manor.”
(Should I grab this? Or this? Oh, maybe I should unload this one first?)
”Whoa! I’ve got it! I’ll do it, so just sit your butt down!!” I yelled.
(I’m using magic, so it’s fine. Besides, I’m way faster at moving stuff than you are…)
”Absolutely not! Safety first! Safety!! First!!!” I shouted back.
(O-okay, I get it, just stop screaming…)
Yeah. It was a whole thing. She clearly doesn’t have the “pregnant woman” mindset yet, so she kept trying to lug furniture around herself. I honestly can’t remember the last time I yelled that loud. My whole body is a wreck of muscle aches and my throat is raw, but I can’t exactly space out when it looks like Satsuki is liable to start working the second I look away.
Actually, I’ve had Satsuki step back from this specific research for now. She has a habit of pushing herself to the breaking point. She insisted she wanted to keep up her duties as a Court Mage during the pregnancy, so I had to step in with a “Husband Stop”²—my personal version of a Doctor Stop—on any extra work. I have no idea if that’s an actual phrase, though.
That’s not to say I stripped her of her research. In fact, the person who actually cracked the code on this resurrection method wasn’t Satsuki—it was Nina-Mailse.
(To think that Nina, the girl who did nothing but crank out idiotic inventions, actually did it…) I thought, but in fairness, she is a top-tier engineer. She just wasn’t cut out for the adult goods side of the business. Her ability to take a “wouldn’t it be cool if…” idea and make it a reality is actually quite high.
I mean, she had enough raw talent to turn those moronic ideas into functional items, after all. Beyond that, she’s a woman who held a post as a Sacred Artificer at the Holy City University. Depending on how this goes, I might have to revise my opinion of her and start being a little nicer.
”Ahem. So? I heard you found a solvent. How’d you manage it?” I asked.
”Ah, changing the subject, are we~? Well, whatever~,” Nina-Mailse said.
When I ask, Nina-Mailse shoots me a sidelong look. But her lips are curling into a smirk; she’s clearly in a great mood. It seems like she’s actually dying to show off her results as fast as possible.
Come to think of it, did she have this exact same look every time she came to show me one of her weird inventions? …I’m starting to get a bad feeling about this, but Satsuki gave it her seal of approval, so it should be… fine. Probably.
”Ta-da! Prepare to be amazed! The solvent I discovered is dirt cheap, and better yet, it’s a single-ingredient solution!” Nina-Mailse proclaimed.
”Heh, now that is impressive,” I said.
Nina-Mailse puffed out her chest, looking incredibly smug. It was just irritating enough that I considered giving those b**bs a squeeze, but I managed to restrain myself this time.
If she really found a material like that, it’s no exaggeration to call it a monumental achievement for our shop. “Cheap” goes without saying, but a “single ingredient” makes the supply chain a breeze. If it’s easy to manufacture and use on top of that, I might actually owe her a special bonus.
”So, what’s the material?” I asked.
”Yes! It is Mangoron juice!!” Nina-Mailse shouted.
”…Sorry, what was that?” I asked.
”I said, it’s Mangoron juice!!” Nina-Mailse repeated.
So I didn’t mishear her. I know what a Mangoron³ is. They grow all over the Kingdom of Canaria—a pale orange fruit (exactly the shade we used to call ‘flesh-colored’ back in my old world). For the record, the skin is pale orange, but the flesh inside is a soft pink.
Generally, people don’t eat them raw. Instead, you dry them in a well-ventilated, shady spot for a few weeks and then soak them in fermented cow’s milk… basically yogurt. It turns into a local delicacy with a unique, jiggly texture and a very specific flavor.
That might make it sound appetizing. But in reality, the sight of that mushy, collapsed pink flesh mixed with yogurt—combined with a name that sounds like… well, something in a certain state—and topped off with a smell that is as “unique” as its texture… to put it bluntly, most people consider it a “grotesque” food.
”…I have a lot of questions, but let’s just put those aside for a second. Why on earth did you think to try that?” I asked.
”I just had a feeling it would melt!” Nina-Mailse said.
Nina-Mailse says this with absolute, unwavering confidence. …Well, okay. I get it. For a researcher, intuition is everything. I’m the same way—half the time I’m just mixing random crap together because “it seems like it might be fun.”
But still, we have a mountain of materials imported from the Kingdom of Ferguson sitting right here in the “Second Lab,” and she ignores all of them to go to the market and buy a Mangoron—a fruit famous for being a culinary nightmare?
This girl… she might actually be a genius. I don’t recall teaching her the art of the pun, though… then again, if someone told me the name of the product itself was a joke, I couldn’t exactly argue with them.
”…Whatever. So? Since you called it ‘juice,’ I assume you’re using the Mangoron before it’s been dried?” I asked.
”Yep! You just take a fresh Mangoron, put it in the press, and squeeze out the juice. Then you filter out the impurities with a cloth and brush the liquid on. Here, watch!” Nina-Mailse said.
She pulls a Mangoron out of a burlap sack she had ready. Yeah… no matter when I see it, no matter how I look at it… no, I’m not going to say it. Nina-Mailse, appearing as though she’s already done this a dozen times, operates the press with practiced, efficient movements.
In an instant, the filtered juice is ready. It is juice. Just juice. Not “fluid.” It’s perfectly clear and colorless, which is bizarre considering it came from such a vividly colored fruit.
”Now, I just brush it onto this. Keep your eyes peeled~!” Nina-Mailse said.
Nina-Mailse places a flat, board-like object on the desk. It’s a material sample I’d made for earlier experiments—the outer skin of a “Ddo-Buddy” pressed into a flat shape. She brushes the Mangoron juice onto the surface. And then…
”Whoa…!” I gasped.
”Right? See? Isn’t it amazing?!” Nina-Mailse said.
I couldn’t help but let out a gasp. Right before my eyes, the surface of the material began to dissolve where the juice touched it. It wasn’t a violent reaction; it was melting just enough to form a thin, receptive film. It was exactly the “ideal melt” I had been looking for.
”And will it bond with fresh ‘Ddo-Buddy Fluid’…!?” I asked.
”Patience, Master! I’m showing you right now!” Nina-Mailse said.
Ever prepared, she pulls a small pot toward her. It’s filled with “Ddo-Buddy Fluid,” the raw base for the products. Using a clean brush, she applies the fluid over the treated area.
Once she’s applied a sufficient layer, she begins casting Holy Hardening Magic. When she’s finished, the surface is perfectly smooth and seamless, without a single blemish or rough edge.
”You did it, Nina! Great job!!” I shouted.
”Uhehe… so this is what it feels like to be praised by the Master…” Nina-Mailse said.
I was so pumped I almost did a victory pose, but when I looked at Nina-Mailse, she was blushing and giggling, a total 180 from her smug attitude earlier. I’m pretty sure I’ve praised her before, but she looked so genuinely happy that I reached over and gave her hair a good, vigorous ruffling.
In any case, thanks to Nina-Mailse’s massive breakthrough, the resurrection of Warrior Alex had just taken a giant leap forward.
