Volume 6 Chapter 4 The Reason for Seeking Strength
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Following our exchange of letters, my date with Sylvie was set for the evening three days later. No major events occurred in the interim; I just spent my days as usual. I’m really looking forward to a date with a girl as proactive as Sylvie.
It’s not like I was trying to get in the mood for the date, but I made Sylvie my imaginary partner last night. In the beginning, it was just a fantasy, but now I can envision us embracing and kissing so vividly that I can practically recall her scent, her softness, and the way her beautiful eyes look from up close. Also, even though I was the one who confessed, Sylvie was the one who took the lead with the hugging and kissing. That level of curiosity is something the other two just don’t have.

Today is the day. Since it feels like a normal weekday to me, I carry out my usual routine: training with Liese, Camilla, and Ilse in the morning, grinding experience points with them in the afternoon, and then heading out to earn some funds.
Ilse rose to Level 15. Liese is at 17, and Camilla remains at 16. However, I think Liese will hit 18 as soon as tomorrow. Normally it would take over a year to get this far, but even for an Elder Race like Liese, it hasn’t even been two months. That’s power-leveling for you.
As for the fund earning, there isn’t much to say. I just spend the time methodically hunting Minotaurs and Orc Generals. B-Rank adventurers are rare relative to the size of the area, so I almost never run into anyone. To avoid trouble, I steer clear if I do spot someone. If it were Gerta’s Beast Fang party, I might stop to say hello, but I haven’t seen them lately.

I wait for Sylvie at the usual fountain square. She had messaged back saying the garden would be fine for our date. Since there aren’t really any forests inside the Royal Capital, it seems to be one of her favorite spots.
The weather right now reminds me of the Obon season1 back in Japan. It gets quite cool in the evenings. I’ve never lived there, but I wonder if this is what the countryside in Northern Japan feels like.
”Sorry to keep you waiting!” Sylvie called out.
”I didn’t wait that long. You look lovely today, Sylvie.”
She’s wearing a dark green one-piece dress paired with a pale cream bolero for the season. The frills are modest, but the coordination really brings out her cuteness. Her light makeup suits her perfectly, too.
”Thank you very much. Shall we go?”
”Yeah, let’s go.”
Sylvie smoothly stepped to my side and linked her arm with mine. She used to do this even before we became a couple, but now it feels much more natural. It still catches me off guard sometimes, but having a proactive, beautiful girl by my side is a wonderful thing.
”Daisuke-san, you always jump a little whenever I link arms or kiss you,” she said, looking up at me. “Do you… dislike it?”
”Not at all. It makes me really happy that you’re so forward with me.”
It looks like she caught on to my bewilderment. Her anxious expression was adorable, but I felt terrible for making her worry.
”I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I never really had a proper date in my previous life. So when you’re sudden about it, I get nervous. I’m just not used to it yet. Sorry.”
”There’s no need to apologize. You just aren’t used to it yet, so we’ll just have to make sure you get used to it from now on.” Sylvie gave a kind smile and tightened her grip on my arm. She might look young, but since she’s technically older than me even including my past life, she seems to have a certain mature sense of composure.
”Thanks. But I can’t let you lead me around forever. I’ll have to find a way to make your heart race, too.”
”Hehe, I’ll be looking forward to it.”
I don’t actually have a concrete plan for that, though. For a while, it looks like I’ll be the one at her mercy. Not that I’m complaining.

We talk about all sorts of things while strolling through the garden arm-in-arm. Usually Ines and Juliet are around, so I rarely get the chance to talk to Sylvie alone. Even though we’ve grown close, there’s still so much I don’t know about her.
”Sylvie, it’s been about two or three years since you left the Elven village, right?”
”That’s right. I’ve only just come out.”
The Elder Races really do have a different sense of time. For a human, two or three years is a long time to be away.
”I know it’s a bit late to ask, but was it really okay for you to leave?”
”Oh, it’s fine. I made sure to meet all the requirements before I left. I don’t think my parents were very happy about it, but according to our laws, they can’t tell me to come back if I’ve met the conditions to go outside.”
I remember hearing before that you can’t leave until you’re around Level 40. From the way she talks, it sounds like she’s wanted to get out for a long time.
”Why did you want to leave in the first place?”
”Many reasons, but mostly because I was bored. They value tradition so much that every day was exactly the same. I just got tired of it.”
Elves seem to be a very conservative race. Sylvie, with her intense curiosity, must be quite the eccentric among them. I’m not complaining, though, since that’s how we met. I suppose that insular village must have felt pretty stifling for her.
We reached a bench and sat down to continue.
”Also, they were trying to force me into an engagement, so I partly ran away to avoid that. I hated how pushy he was being even though I kept refusing.”
”Wait, is that really okay?” I asked, startled.
”The engagement was never official, so it’s fine. Under Elven law, an engagement can’t happen without the person’s consent. Still, if he’s truly determined to marry me, he might come chasing after me.”
”That’s… a bit worrying.”
”You’ll be fine, Daisuke-san! Even if he does come, I think it will take him at least another five years to meet the requirements to leave the village.”
”I see. That makes me feel a bit better.”
To Sylvie, since she left the official way, there’s no problem. My condolences to that guy, whoever he is. I don’t feel like waiting five years for him, and I don’t even know if he’s that hung up on her anyway. If Sylvie wanted to go back, that would be one thing, but if he tries to drag her back against her will, I’ll do everything in my power to stop him. Five years from now, I should be well over Level 200. I won’t lose.
Still, if I had been forceful with her, Sylvie might have run away from me too. The “Reward” was something that had to be paid, but we hadn’t made a “Covenant to the Gods.” If she had truly hated it, she could have chosen to flee. I didn’t do it because forcing people isn’t my style, but that’s probably why we were able to become a couple.
”This might be a bit hard to talk about, so you don’t have to answer, but why did you refuse the engagement?”
”I don’t mind. My parents and his family had similar values, which is why they pushed for it, but he was a ‘traditional Elf’ in the worst way. He believed Elves were the supreme race, that humans were lowly, and dwarves were ignoble… I hated the idea of being tied to the village forever with someone like that. The outside world is fun; leaving was definitely the right choice.”
”Do you… get along with your family?”
”It’s not that bad. It’s just that our values don’t align, especially regarding that engagement attempt.”
”I see. Sorry for asking something so weird.”
”It’s fine. Thank you for worrying about me.”
I probably can’t get permission to enter her village right now, but I wonder if I should go give my greetings eventually. Her parents sound like they’d look down on me, so it might be awkward. I’ll think about it while keeping Sylvie’s feelings in mind.
”Daisuke-san, do you have any lingering attachments to your old world?” she asked.
”Hmm, not particularly at this point. There were things like entertainment I can’t find here or books I hadn’t finished reading, but I wouldn’t want to go back if it meant giving up the life I have now. I wasn’t that close to my family, and I hated my job. Besides, I just became your boyfriend. I don’t want to leave you, Sylvie.”
”Oh, thank you. I don’t want to say goodbye either.”
”I’m glad we feel the same way.”
I finally have a girlfriend, and things are only going to get better from here. I have absolutely no desire to go back to being a corporate slave. At first it was hard, but ever since I started dating these three, every day has been incredible. Life with Liese, Camilla, and Ilse is great, and lately, I’ve even ended up with more friends with benefits. There are a lot of wonderful women around.
I am curious about the games I left unfinished and the manga I was in the middle of—I wonder if that one ever finished… probably not—but it’s not enough to make me want to throw this life away.
”Sylvie, you said you wanted a partner who was strong, right? You mentioned wanting someone who could one-shot a Wyvern. Is there a reason for that?”
”Yes. It’s true that I want someone strong enough to protect me, but there’s another reason. I’ve heard the strongest class of Elves back home are roughly that powerful. If my partner is as strong as them, my parents won’t be able to oppose the marriage. In the worst case, if it comes down to a duel, I need that strength to get what I want.”
”Elves are a lot more muscle-headed than I thought…”
”Yes… it’s a bit embarrassing.”
Of course, not everything is decided by duels, but settling disputes that way is common in this world. You can refuse if you’re at a disadvantage, but the challenger will usually try to Taunt you into it. Once you accept, the loser must fulfill the “Reward.” It becomes a fight you can’t afford to lose. Since people in non-combat classes can’t fight directly, they sometimes hire proxies—which is where adventurer requests come in.
A designated request for a B-Rank adventurer costs at least one gold coin, but for a duel, the price would probably be higher. For an A-Rank, even ten gold might not be enough. In the end, money really does talk.
By the way, a commoner can’t challenge a noble to a duel, but a noble can challenge a commoner. It is possible for a commoner to Taunt a noble into challenging them, though you have to be careful not to commit Lèse-majesté. I used to think a noble could just take whatever they wanted without a duel, but it doesn’t always work that way. If someone starts forcibly taking things from people who refuse, they gain “Evil” titles, which forces even a head of a house into immediate retirement—or the executioner’s block.

We enjoy our conversation while eating at a casual restaurant. Since the topic got a little heavy earlier, I decide to change the subject. I want to know what she hopes for in our relationship going forward.
”Sylvie, what do you want to do from here on out? I’ll need to talk with Ines and Juliet too, but I want to make sure I’m following your wishes as much as possible.”
”Thank you. I don’t intend to monopolize you, Daisuke-san, so I’m happy for things to continue as they have been.”
”Thanks. Is there anything else?”
”Well… it would make me happy if we could have some time just for the two of us every now and then.” She gave me a radiant, delicate smile that left me mesmerized for a moment.
”Oh, by the way, congratulations on the other day. Ines-san was so happy.”
”Thanks. I’m glad to hear she was happy.”
It seems she heard the news from Ines. I guess it’s only natural since they live in the same inn and see each other every day. Still, it feels a little strange to be talking about another woman during our date. Not that it seems particularly out of place in this world.
”If Ines-san got to do it, then I can too, right?” she whispered with a playful look.
”Oh… uh, yes. With pleasure.”
A surprise invitation. It looks like my days of being at Sylvie’s mercy are going to continue.

Summary:
Daisuke goes on a highly anticipated date with Sylvie, which begins with casual grinding and fund earning to maintain his routine. During their time in the Royal Capital’s gardens, they discuss Sylvie’s past, revealing her escape from an oppressive Elven village and a forced engagement. Sylvie explains her requirement for a strong partner as a legal necessity to prevent her parents from interfering in her future marriage. Daisuke reaffirms his commitment to his new life and his partners, rejecting his past as a corporate slave. The chapter concludes with a romantic dinner and Sylvie proactively inviting Daisuke to deepen their physical relationship.
—
Trivia:
- The mention of ‘Covenant to the Gods’ suggests a higher-tier binding contract system that Daisuke has avoided so far.
- The 5-year timeline for Sylvie’s ex-fiancé to leave the village sets a long-term clock for a potential Elven antagonist arc.
- Daisuke’s projection of being Level 200 in 5 years hints at the exponential growth expected from his power-leveling methods.
- The ‘Evil’ title system acts as a built-in karma mechanic in this world, preventing nobles from absolute tyranny
—
Character Insight:
Daisuke and Sylvie’s relationship shifts from casual attraction to a partnership with legal and cultural stakes. Sylvie reveals her ‘adult composure’ despite her appearance, showing she is strategically using Daisuke’s strength to secure her own freedom. Daisuke’s internal monologue about ‘not wanting to leave her’ marks a definitive emotional anchoring to this world.
—
Lore And Worldbuilding Context:
Elven society is depicted as highly isolationist and supremacist, with a rigid law system (掟) that governs movement and marriage. The world features a ‘Duel’ system where proxies (adventurers) can be hired, effectively turning physical disputes into financial ones for the wealthy.
—
TL Notes:
The term ‘degozaru’ was translated as a firm, slightly archaic rejection to maintain the protagonist’s comedic intensity regarding his old life. ‘Nou-kin’ was localized as ‘muscle-headed’ to fit the fantasy context.
