The silence lingered for a moment before Rias finally spoke.
”Do you think there was a leak from within the Student Council?”
Sona shook her head with conviction. “Impossible.”
”Why impossible? You have plenty of people in the council who aren’t part of your Peerage.”
”Because,” Sona said, “besides Tsubaki and myself, no one else was even aware of the situation.”
Tsubaki had only reported Aki’s extraordinary magical talent to Sona. To prevent Aki from accidentally letting it slip in a moment of pride, Tsubaki hadn’t even informed the boy himself. Sona had intended to observe him personally today and, if the reports held true, bring him into the Student Council—even if she didn’t induct him into her Peerage immediately.
Instead, overnight, the entire campus had been flooded with news of Aki’s immense potential. Worse, rumors were swirling about his ‘complicated’ relationship with Tsubaki and his alleged debauchery with other students.
The rumors were vivid, claiming a group of girls had thrown a party with Aki at the center. The stories placed the Student Council Vice President beneath him while he kissed Touko Sakuramachi and groped Yukina Sasaki. They detailed Hamazaki Reina performing a ‘poison dragon’ 2 on him while Yuki Shinomura pushed from behind, leaving Ruri Kurumizaka to handle the refreshments and the after-party cleanup.
It was spread with such graphic detail that even Tsubaki felt herself starting to doubt her own memory.
While the news of his potential was only understood by students of the Hidden Academy, the second set of rumors explained why Aki had been the target of so many strange looks that morning. He had indeed been playing fast and loose with Reina’s group, and they had been spotted in the girls’ locker room on more than one occasion.
This mix of seventy percent lies and thirty percent truth made the rumors nearly impossible to clear up. Even if the Student Council flexed its authority, people would only nod in public while whispering even more outrageous versions in private. The students didn’t care about the truth; they cared about the details of Aki’s ‘great war’ with the girls.
”Is it possible your conversation was overheard?” Rias asked.
”Um…” Aki started.
”Tsubaki maintained a barrier,” Sona interjected, ignoring him. “What’s stranger is why they went out of their way to spread news of Uesugi’s flings.”
”Wait, I—”
”So you’re saying,” Rias said, “the person spreading this wasn’t actually trying to broadcast his potential?”
Aki sighed, looking up at the ceiling. They were discussing his life as if he weren’t standing right there. Fine, you’ve both got big chests, he thought. You call the shots.
Since he couldn’t break into the conversation between Rias and Sona, he decided to try the other side of the room. Compared to the slightly antagonistic atmosphere between the two presidents, Akeno Himejima and Tsubaki Shinra—both Queens—were getting along quite well. As outcasts from the Five Great Exorcist Clans who had been reincarnated as devils, they shared a deep bond.
Tsubaki, remembering her promise to Aki, began to explain the situation while the two leaders remained deadlocked. In short, someone had leaked a half-truth to put Aki in the spotlight. Sona had wanted to recruit him secretly, but Rias, having heard the news, now wanted to compete for him. Ideally, Rias wouldn’t have wanted him noticed by the masses either. Sona needed strength to achieve her dreams, and Rias needed to bolster her power to handle an impending crisis. Neither was willing to give up a Peerage member with such massive potential.
After getting the gist of it, Aki prepared to play the part of the clueless newbie and ask about ‘Peerages.’ But before he could speak, Rias and Sona finally reached a temporary consensus.
”Uesugi-kun, these are the benefits and school rules for the Hidden Academy,” Sona said, handing him a palm-sized booklet from her pocket. “Regardless of who spread those rumors, you are now a member. See that you don’t violate these.”
Aki took the thin, red-covered book. He flipped through it quickly. It was the standard fare: don’t reveal the existence of the academy, don’t use supernatural powers for evil, and so on. He didn’t bother looking at the benefits. Compared to the gains from his Dual Cultivation ability, he couldn’t bring himself to care about ‘newbie resources.’
Once he finished, Sona looked at him again. “How much do you know about the supernatural?”
”A tiny bit.” Aki held his thumb and index finger just a fraction of an inch apart.
Sona frowned. “Such as?”
”Reina and the others told me…” He shared a few bits of information that were essentially common knowledge in the Inner World.
”That’s enough for a normal freshman,” Rias said, tapping her cheek. “But as a member of a Peerage, you should at least know about your master’s situation.”
Aki wanted to tell her he knew the situation better than anyone, but he bit his tongue. He stood there obediently, looking like a lost puppy hoping for a big sister’s affection. The expression worked instantly. Rias’s heart practically melted, and she nearly pulled him into her chest then and there.
However, someone else moved faster.
Aki felt a sudden, soft pressure against his cheek. A faint, sweet fragrance filled his senses as he took a deep breath.
”Akeno-senpai… let go a little,” he mumbled.
Despite his words, he nuzzled deeper into her full, firm chest. Akeno’s face flushed a soft pink. She realized she’d been played by his ‘innocent boy’ act, but as she looked at him, she found herself unable to pull away.
She wasn’t the only one. Rias, Sona, and Tsubaki had all been caught off guard by his vulnerable appearance, though Akeno had been the quickest to act. This weak, ‘easy-to-bully’ look was a direct hit to Akeno’s sadistic side.
Fine, he’s a little pervert, she thought, holding him tighter. But I guess I’m a sucker for exactly this kind of thing.
Aki, more than happy to enjoy the view, shifted into a more comfortable position and began to listen to Rias explain the Inner World.
”We are currently in the Human Realm. Beyond this, there are the Underworld and the Heaven…”
Rias went on about the Great Powers—devils, angels, fallen angels, and dragons—and the internal factions within each race. Curled up in Akeno’s arms, Aki listened with mild boredom. He knew all of this already, and the high-level politics had nothing to do with him yet.
Rias eventually stopped, her throat dry, only to see Aki completely lost in the sensation of Akeno’s embrace. She shot her Queen a sharp glare.
”Uesugi, listen up. And stop trying to slide your hand under Akeno’s shirt.”
”My, my,” Akeno giggled, catching his wandering hand. “Be a good boy and listen. Big sister might have a reward for you later.”
