Volume 7 Chapter 7 The Traveling Party

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I woke up the next morning drenched in sweat. Even though the weather was finally starting to cool down, it was still August-and being buried under a “human quilt” of five women made the heat inevitable.

Liese was the only one already up and busy with breakfast. The other five were still tangled together in a deep sleep, though Ilse was technically “awake,” just staring blankly at nothing. Camilla had snuggled into the empty spot on my right, clutching my arm with a look of pure contentment on her face. This was pretty much her morning ritual.

I gave Ines, Juliet, and Sylvie their morning kisses, then patted Camilla and Ilse on the head. Ilse was still in a daze, but she seemed to have taken a liking to the whole group-cuddle thing. When I thanked Liese for the food prep, I gave her a pat too. Her tail wagged happily-not quite the frantic thumping I get when she sees a steak, but she was definitely in a good mood.

(I knew it would be a struggle for Liese and the girls to go without meat while I was away, so I’d dug a pit in the yard and set up a magic tool to create a makeshift cold-storage room. I stocked it with about two weeks’ worth of meat; that should hold them over.)

I’d already finished my “Private Power Generation (m**urbation)”¹ last night before getting into bed. (Once you’re pinned down in a pile of sleeping women, escaping is basically impossible.) I’d taken care of business while thinking about the three girls from Gale, though I still haven’t tried a group session yet. Juliet would probably be too shy, but Ines would probably say yes if I just asked. Sylvie would likely be game for whatever.

Since all our gear was already in the Item Box², there was no need to pack. We got ready with time to spare and set out before the sun climbed too high.

”Alright, I’m heading out,” I said.

 ”Yeah, take care,” replied Liese.

 ”Be careful,” Ines said.

”I’ll be counting down the minutes until you’re back! ♪” Juliet chirped.

 ”Safe travels, Master,” Sylvie said.

”Master, please come home soon,” Camilla added.

”Good luck out there!” Ilse called out.

I gave my three lovers a final parting kiss, while Liese and the others sent me off with more head-pats. (I’ll do my best to wrap this up and get home as fast as I can.)

* * *

The rendezvous point was just outside the capital, right next to the main gates. It looked like the Knights’ Order-specifically Captain Emily’s squad-was already assembled. About twenty knights were milling about, some checking gear, others keeping an eye on the road.

”Morning,” I said, walking up. “Am I the last one?”

”Good morning, Daisuke. No, we’re still waiting on two of the C-Rank parties.”

It was still before the scheduled time, so I was relieved I wasn’t the straggler. Looking over the knights, the only familiar faces were Captain Emily, Vice-Captain Cassandra, Mercedes, and Adalgar-kun. I hadn’t really spoken to the others yet. I decided to make the rounds.

 ”Morning, Mercedes,” I said.

 ”Good morning!” Mercedes shouted.

”You’ve got a lot of energy for this hour,” I noted.

”That’s because I got a full night’s sleep and a massive breakfast! I’m ready to go!”

”Right, right. Good for you,” I said.

”Hey! That was a total brush-off! Daisuke-san, your reactions are so half-hearted!” Mercedes complained.

”My bad, my bad,” I replied.

Dealing with Mercedes’ max-volume personality this early was exhausting. The girl was basically a walking battery.

”Morning, Adalgar-san,” I said, moving on. “It’s been a while.”

 ”Hmph. Good morning,” Adalgar replied.

”I’ll be in your care for the next few days.”

”Likewise. I look forward to your contribution.”

(Yikes. This was my first time actually trying to talk to Adalgar-kun, but the conversation was a total non-starter. He seems serious about the job, but he clearly has zero interest in me. Honestly, I’m not exactly dying to be his best friend either, so I guess it’s fine.)

Then, there was the real problem child.

”Morning, Cassandra,” I said. “You’ll be following my lead for the duration of this request. Let’s make it work.”

 ”…I understand,” Cassandra replied.

”Look, you’re in a position of authority over the other knights, and I don’t want the adventurers thinking they can walk all over you. You don’t need to use formal speech with me,” I said.

”I… see. I appreciate the consideration,” Cassandra said.

 ”Yeah, don’t mention it.”

Cassandra looked like she’d just swallowed a lemon, but since our duel had settled the matter, she was at least making an effort to show she was under my command. When I told her she could drop the formalities, she actually looked a bit relieved. (I’ll keep the fact that I found that slightly cute to myself.)

”I assume Captain Emily told you, but we’ll be spending the nights together,” I said. “Once the Order’s duties are done for the day, come to my quarters.”

 ”…I am aware,” Cassandra replied.

She looked miserable about it, but she didn’t refuse. (Not that she could, being my slave and all. I’ll check in with her later to see if she’s actually as miserable as she looks.)

Anyway, time to greet the C-Rankers. The first group was a bunch of strangers.

”Daisuke, B-Rank. I’ll be coordinating the adventurers. Looking forward to it,” I said.

”I’m Hannah, leader of the C-Rank party ‘Her Fünf.’ These are my members: Heinz, Hugo, Hedda, and Hilde,” she said.

”Heinz here. Let’s have a smooth trip,” Heinz said.

”I’m Hugo! You’re looking a little skimpy on the muscle there, Daisuke! Gahaha!” Hugo shouted.

”I’m Hedda,” the woman said. “You’re pretty lean for a B-Rank, aren’t you?”

”I-I’m Hilde… Sorry about them, they don’t mean anything by it…” Hilde whispered.

”Don’t worry about it. I’ve heard worse,” I replied.

(Hannah was a human woman, Heinz a human man, Hugo was some kind of bovine Beastman (I think), Hedda was a human woman, and Hilde was a Harpy. They all looked to be in their mid-to-late twenties. Hannah seemed like she had a solid head on her shoulders, and Heinz looked more observant than his bulk suggested. Hugo, on the other hand, clearly measured everyone’s worth by the size of their biceps. Hedda seemed to be cut from the same cloth. In this world, your Ability Scores³ do all the heavy lifting, so huge muscles are basically just hood ornaments, but whatever. Hilde just seemed shy.)

”Just so you know, Heinz is married to me and Hilde, and Hugo is Hedda’s husband,” Hannah added.

”Got it. I’ll keep that in mind,” I said. “As you’ve probably heard, I’m coordinating the adventurers, so make sure you follow the tactical calls.”

”Yeah, we’re in your hands,” Hannah replied.

The others didn’t seem to have any beef with it. They had their quirks, but they seemed professional enough. (C-Rank is usually the ‘make or break’ point where you find the real weirdos, so I’m glad this group is sane.)

”We’re not moving out yet, so just relax for now,” I told them.

 ”You got it,” Hannah said.

(There were three women in that group, but there was no point in trying to get friendly with married women. Especially since I have my own ‘Ordeal’ to worry about.)

I wondered who the other party would be. I don’t know many people in the capital, but maybe Vanessa or Meta?

 ”Daisuke-sama!” a voice called.

 ”Huh? Meta?”

Meta came jogging up, dressed in her Priestess robes. Turns out the second C-Rank party was hers. (Thank god for small mercies.)

”I heard we were being paired with a B-Rank for a joint request, and I had a feeling it might be you… I must thank the gods for this divine guidance! ♡” Meta said.

”You’re laying it on a bit thick. Want to introduce me to the rest of your party?” I asked.

I was glad to see a familiar face, but she was radiating that “pink aura” way too hard for a professional setting. The knights were already looking a bit prickly, so I tried to steer the conversation toward something more business-like.

”Oh! Of course,” Meta said. “This is our leader, Edda, and our members Delia, Kathe, and Magda.”

”I’m Edda, leader of ‘Mirage.’ We met once before. Good to be working with you,” Edda said.

”I’m Delia… nice to meet ya~” Delia chirped.

 ”Right nice t’meetcha,” Kathe said.

”I’m Magda! You two seem pretty cozy, don’t you?” Magda asked.

”Something like that. I’m Daisuke, B-Rank,” I replied.

I’d met Meta’s party, “Mirage,” once before when I helped her out, but it was just a quick greeting. Edda was a sharp-looking cat-type Beastman; Delia was a spacey-looking raccoon-type; Kathe spoke with a thick country lilt; and Magda was a tiny little thing-probably a Gnome. She was likely way older than me, despite her size.

”To think our Meta-the girl who used to despise men-would get this close to one… You’re a real piece of work, Daisuke. I can see it now… you and Meta… hehehe…” Magda giggled.

”…Is she always like this?” I asked Meta.

”Unfortunately, yes. She’s solid once the fighting starts, but the rest of the time…” Meta sighed.

Magda was already off in her own little fantasy world. (It’s funny to watch a cute girl trip out like that, but Meta just looked like she wanted the earth to swallow her whole.)

”Magda! Snap out of it!” Edda barked.

”Gah! What was that for, Edda!?” Magda shouted.

”Because you were making a disgusting face! You’re always doing this!”

”Oh, shut it! I know you’re just a closet pervert yourself, Edda!”

”W-what!? Don’t you dare start that lie!”

 ”Now, now, girls~” Delia said.

”Stoppit, both o’ ya! It’s embarrassin’!” Kathe groaned.

Edda and Magda started wrestling right there on the grass while the other two tried to play peacemaker. (Are we really going to be okay?)

”It’s just their way of communicating,” Meta said, rubbing her temples. “I’ve mostly given up on trying to follow it.”

(If it were a real fight, I’d step in, but it seemed like they were just blowing off steam. As long as they can fight together, I don’t care.)

”So, the rabble has assembled,” a voice drawled.

Just as we were about to hit the departure time, the final group showed up. Great. The guy leading them sounded like he was looking down his nose at the entire world. (Landmine alert. Honestly, I wanted to ignore him, but as the coordinator, I had to do my job. Please don’t be a pain in the ass.)

”You’re the C-Rank party for the Knights’ Order request, I assume?” I asked.

”You clearly lack manners,” one of the followers snapped. “This is Lord Vait Kojima, a scion of the prestigious House Kojima, whose lineage dates back to the Founding King himself!”

”Indeed. I am Vait Kojima, leader of the C-Rank party ‘Golden Dragon’s Breath,’” the man said.

 ”…Right. I’m Daisuke, B-Rank. Let’s get going,” I said.

”You! Were you even listening!? That was incredibly disrespectful!” the follower shouted.

(Yep. Total weirdo. I gave him a standard greeting and his deer-type Beastman lackey started losing his mind. The whole party was five dudes-Vait and his fan club. Can I request a trade-in?)

”Hold, Moritz,” Vait said, holding up a hand. “This must be the ‘Otherworlder’ summoned along with the Hero. I’ve heard they come from a backward land without a proper nobility system. I shall be magnanimous and overlook his ignorance… just this once.”

”Ha! Lord Vait is truly merciful! You should be weeping with gratitude, you peasant. Now, apologize to Lord Vait immediately and we might let this slide,” Moritz said.

”…As I’m sure you’ve been briefed, I’ve been put in charge of adventurer coordination. You will follow my tactical orders. Period,” I said.

I kept my voice flat and professional, ignoring their stunned expressions as I turned my back on them. (I’m not wasting my breath on idiots. I headed over to Captain Emily to give my final report before we moved out.)
