Volume 7 Chapter 11 Party Battle

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”A duel…? Do you seriously think a C-Rank stands a chance against a B-Rank?”

”I might not be able to win, but my representative can,” Vait said.

Vait shot a glance toward Moritz, who gave a confident nod. It seemed Vait wasn’t quite stupid enough to think he could handle it himself.

”Fine. I don’t mind if you use a surrogate… but just so I’m clear, what exactly are you wagering?” I replied.

”That’s already decided. That woman right there,” Vait said.

”Meta is my lover, not a slave. Even if you tell me to ‘bet’ her, that’s not something I can just do, you know?” I said.

”Mmph… then wager that you’ll never lay a finger on her or come near her again,” Vait said.

”Well, I suppose that’s doable. So, Vait, what are you putting up?” I asked.

”I’ll walk away. I’ll leave this place,” Vait said.

”The stakes aren’t even. You were already dumped, Vait; leaving is just a given,” I said.

”Guh! Then a different reward! Gold coins—”

”I’ve got plenty of money, so I don’t need yours. If you’re that desperate for a duel, then let’s see…”

(If he keeps causing scenes like this, it’s going to be a massive headache. Should I make him promise to ‘stay quiet for the duration of the quest’? No, that’s a bit too cheap. I’ll make that a baseline, but I’m going to add one… no, two more conditions.)

”Here are my terms: ‘Behave yourself within the bounds of common social decency for the duration of the quest,’ ‘A total ban on all forms of s*xual pleasure, including onanism¹ for the duration of the quest,’ and ‘No retaliation, direct or indirect, against me or anyone associated with me,’” I said.

”What?! You think I’d ever swallow a ‘Reward’ like that?!” Vait yelled.

”Oh? Is Vait of the ‘prestigious’ Tajima family already assuming he’s going to lose?” I asked.

”It’s the Kojima family! And I’m only asking for one thing! It’s not a fair trade if you demand three!” Vait screamed.

”Oops, my bad. Got the name wrong. But look, even if I’m asking for three things, the first and third are just things any normal person does anyway. If you think those terms are ‘harsh,’ you’re basically admitting you’re a spoiled little brat with no common sense, aren’t you?” I said.

I was baiting him on purpose, of course, but I’d always wanted to try saying that. He isn’t the actual head of a noble house, so a ‘slip of the tongue’ like that is a mistake I can get away with once. Vait recoiled at the three demands, but in reality, it’s just one actual penalty.

The other two shouldn’t be a problem for any decent human being. Since his libido was the source of the trouble, I was going to seal it off. I’m being kind by giving it an expiration date; an indefinite ban would be way too cruel. He can probably handle ten days of abstinence.

”You…! Fine! I’ll take those terms! But I’m adding a condition of my own!” Vait shouted.

”Hmm? And what’s that?” I asked.

 ”A party battle!” Vait replied.

 (Ah, so that’s his play.)

I’m registered as a B-Rank adventurer individually, but I’m also treated as a B-Rank party of one. On the other hand, while Vait is technically a C-Rank, Moritz’s strength is equivalent to a B-Rank. Moritz is on the same level as me; he’s likely confident he could win one-on-one, but he’s absolutely certain he can win if it’s a full party effort.

Vait wore a nasty smirk while Moritz huffed with a surge of aggressive confidence. In contrast, the other three members looked like they were just resigned to being dragged into another one of their boss’s selfish whims.

Certainly, if you only looked at the ranks and the numbers, it might look like they had the edge. But they were naive. They underestimated what it meant to be a solo adventurer. If they had two brain cells to rub together, they’d realize a solo has to do the work of at least three party members all by himself.

Maybe they only knew that I was part of a five-person party of Transferees² until recently. Mia did say we were standing out quite a bit. If they didn’t know about my recent activities, they probably didn’t realize I’d been clearing the 16th floor solo. It didn’t matter. It would be a pain if he got cold feet and ran away over the details, so I decided to just snap it up.

”What’s the matter? Is the big B-Rank party afraid of a few C-Ranks—”

”Fine. Let’s do it. ‘Guild-Style Party Battle’ rules, right?” I said.

”Eh? Ah… yeah. Exactly,” Vait stammered.

”You realize that in a party battle involving the primary duelists, the ‘Reward’ applies to every single member, right?” I asked.

 ”Wait, what!?” Vait yelled.

 ”Lord Vait, that’s…” Peter said.

”Shut up! We just have to win!” Vait screamed.

”Something wrong? You’re the one who brought this up. If you apologize right now, I might let it slide,” I said.

”Like hell! You’re the fool here! I’ll make you regret this! Let’s get started!” Vait shouted.

The three members besides Moritz clearly didn’t know the specifics of party-stake duels, because they were starting to look a little pale. My condolences. For the record, if this had been a duel between representatives, the ‘Reward’ wouldn’t have affected the whole party.

Since we obviously couldn’t fight in the middle of the street, we headed to the local Guild to use their training grounds. Cassandra acted as the witness. She’s technically my slave, but I knew she wouldn’t show any bias.

”Daisuke-sama, are you sure about this? Against five, it might be too much…” Meta said.

”It’s fine, I’ve got plenty of room to spare. Just watch,” I said.

”…No. Daisuke-sama is fighting for my sake; I can’t just pretend I’m not involved. I’m joining the party battle too,” Meta said.

 ”Huh?” I asked.

Meta, the very person at the center of this, had been worrying about me fighting the Golden Dragon’s Breath party, but then she said something completely unexpected. I would have preferred she stayed back, but she looked at me with absolute resolve. She’s surprisingly stubborn.

”Look, I don’t want to drag your party into this…” I said.

”I’ll form a temporary party with Daisuke-sama. That way, I won’t cause trouble for my regular members,” Meta replied.

 ”U-Uhh…?” I stammered.

”Daisuke-sama, you have ‘room to spare,’ right?” Meta asked.

”…Fine. I get it. I don’t plan on letting you get a scratch on you, so just make sure you stay behind me, okay?” I said.

 ”Yes! ♪” Meta chirped.

Meta nodded with a bright, cheerful smile. I wasn’t sure how to feel about her being happy to jump into a duel. The four members of the Mirage Party were getting hyped up, whispering to each other. They didn’t seem malicious, so I ignored them.

”I’m forming a temporary party with Meta. Any objections?” I asked.

”It’s only natural for me to participate since I’m the one involved. And the reward will be ‘Vait never approaches Daisuke-sama again,’ right?” Meta said.

 ”Tsk… fine,” Vait said.

Vait looked a bit annoyed, but he didn’t push back. Moritz narrowed his eyes at Meta, clearly marking her as the weak link. (I won’t let that happen.)

”Are you ready? Both parties, swear the Oath,” Cassandra said.

”Yeah. I will fight according to the ‘Guild-Style Party Battle’ conditions. If I lose, I ‘Oath to the Gods’ that the reward will be that I never approach Meta again,” I said.

”I will fight according to the ‘Guild-Style Party Battle’ conditions. If I lose, I ‘Oath to the Gods’ that the reward will be that I never approach Daisuke-sama again,” Meta said.

”I will fight according to the ‘Guild-Style Party Battle’ conditions. If I lose, I ‘Oath to the Gods’ that the reward will be ‘to stay quiet for the duration of the quest’—” Vait started.

”That’s not the reward. It’s ‘behave yourself within the bounds of social common sense’,” I corrected.

Vait was trying to cut corners on the wording. Pathetic.

”Urgh! I just tripped over the words! I will fight according to the ‘Guild-Style Party Battle’ conditions. If I lose, I ‘Oath to the Gods’ that the reward will be ‘behave myself within the bounds of social common sense during the quest,’ ‘prohibition on s*xual pleasure including onanism during the quest,’ and ‘no retaliation against the winner or his associates’,” Vait shouted.

Moritz and the other three swore the same Oath.

”As the Witness, I shall judge with neutrality and fairness. Once the matter is settled, I ‘Oath to the Gods’ to ensure the loser fulfills the reward. Now… BEGIN!” Cassandra shouted.

 ”[Strength Up]!” Meta yelled.

 ”[Vital Up]!” Peter shouted.

The moment the signal dropped, both Priests scrambled to buff their teams. Meta hit me with a magic to boost my STR, while the enemy Priest Peter cast a VIT-boosting buff on the Rhinoceros Beastman, Nicholas. They kept layering buffs on their members.

None of them tried to rush in with [Flash Move]. Instead, Nicholas took up a defensive stance in front. Vait stood behind Nicholas, with Peter further back. The Deer Beastman Moritz and the Lamia Daniel began circling around, trying to move into our blind spots. Meta backed away just enough to keep distance while staying behind me.

”You don’t seem to know who you’re dealing with. Moritz is a veteran adventurer known as the ‘Shining Horn.’ He’s a Magic Swordsman—a rarity among Deer Beastmen—and a B-Rank adventurer. Furthermore, his achievements to date—” Vait started.

 ”Too long,” I said.

 CRACK!

 THUD!

 THWACK!

The three C-Ranks collapsed, letting out wretched shrieks as if their insides were bursting—though in reality, I’d just punched them into unconsciousness.

It’s not just for party battles; the basic theory of fighting multiple opponents is to thin the numbers first. It would be different if they had a glass-cannon with high firepower, but they didn’t. So, I decided to put the three non-entities to sleep first: the Rhinoceros Beastman tank Nicholas, the Lamia Scout Daniel, and the Human Priest Peter.

Except for Moritz, none of them could even react. I neutralized them effortlessly. Moritz had positioned himself too poorly to provide backup in time; it looked like he’d basically just left the three of them out to dry.

The tactic of putting a high-defense tank in front while sending a Stealth-heavy Scout and a high-level skirmisher like Moritz to the flanks wasn’t technically wrong.

However, it results in a split force until the encirclement is complete. More importantly, they completely underestimated my combat power. Consequently, they allowed me to pick them off one by one right at the start, and they lost their numerical advantage in seconds. Vait had probably just been yapping to buy time for the flankers to get into position. Thanks to that, I’d already finished my [Appraisal] of everyone.

”What?! You… attacking in the middle of a speech! How cowardly!” Vait screamed.

”The duel had already started, so it’s not cowardly. Besides, that’s rich coming from the guy who tried to pull a five-on-one,” I said.

Meta had joined in unexpectedly, but if she hadn’t, it would have been five against one. That might be legal within the regulations, but anyone would call that cowardly. This guy really has been pampered his whole life. He actually thought his opponent would sit there and listen to him talk in the middle of a fight. As if.

”Tch… the plan has changed, but so be it. Moritz, I’m leaving the front to you!” Vait yelled.

”Leave it to me,” Moritz replied.

Vait still trusts Moritz’s strength. Even after seeing the other three go down, he hasn’t surrendered. Moritz looks pretty confident himself. I couldn’t tell if Vait was going to go after Meta or if they were going to double-team me, but I don’t plan on giving them the chance. I don’t want to put Meta in the line of fire, so I’ll just take Moritz out now. I still have questions for Vait, so he can wait for last.

 ”Go to sleep,” I said.

 SMACK!

Closing the distance with a combination of [Concealment] and [Flash Move], I caught him while he was still gaping and ended it with a solid uppercut to the jaw. I hit him harder than the three C-Ranks; he went spinning high into the air. He looked exactly like a fighting game character getting hit by a finishing move.

Moritz was supposed to be a Magic Swordsman, but I didn’t give him a single second to use any magic after that first buff. And since that was just a STR buff, it’s clear they were definitely looking down on me.

Now, only Vait is left. The winner is already obvious, but he doesn’t seem ready to quit. He levels his sword at me, glaring. To still stand your ground after seeing that gap in skill… he’s got more grit than I thought. It’s a fine line between bravery and suicide, but I guess he counts as a warrior in his own right.”
