Volume 7 Chapter 14 The Second Day of the Journey

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The morning after spending my first time with Cassandra, I woke to find her already suited up in her armor, fully prepared for the day. She really doesn’t leave much of an opening.

”Morning. How are you feeling?” I asked.

 ”No problems,” she replied.

As blunt as ever. Still, the fact that she didn’t just ignore me-is that a step forward? Or just her being professional?

 ”What about breakfast?”

”We’re heading out for that now.”

At the very least, she hadn’t gone and eaten without me. We ducked into a decent-looking diner and ate together. Even if the conversation wasn’t exactly “lively,” spending time like this should gradually build up her affection. Then again, sometimes it goes the other way and starts dropping…

When we reached the assembly point, everyone was already there. Even the Golden Dragon’s Breath, who were cutting it dangerously close yesterday, had shown up on their best behavior today. I suppose the threat of heavy penalties will do that to a group.

 ”Good morning, Captain Emily.”

”Ah, morning! So, Daisuke… did Cassandra give you a good ‘workout’ last night?”

 ”…Thanks to you, yes.”

”Hahaha! I’ll have to hear all the juicy details later.”

Cassandra gave a sullen response but didn’t snap at the Captain. Even though Emily was teasing her, I think Cassandra puts up with it because the Captain has looked out for her so many times in the past.

 ”Daisuke-san, give me sweets. Now.”

 ”That’s sudden,” I remarked.

In contrast to the others, Mercedes was looking uncharacteristically grumpy, immediately demanding a snack.

”I had a miserable time yesterday! I ended up being saddled with every single duty the Vice-Captain usually handles. I was running all over the place! As the ‘Acting Vice-Captain,’ I had to organize the troops, handle the inn payments, and even arrange the rations. I did it all!”

”O-oh. Sounds like you had it rough.”

It looked like Captain Emily had really put her through the ringer. I suspected Emily had a specific reason for making Mercedes do it all alone, though.

”Here, take this and cheer up.”

”Thank you! I knew I could count on you, Daisuke-san. You’re way too kind, especially compared to that Vice-Captain!”

”You just couldn’t leave well enough alone, could you?” I muttered.

A single sweet was enough to fix her mood, but she really was a “disappointing beauty.” Plus, that probably wasn’t the best thing to say with the person in question standing right there.

”Mercedes… exactly what did you mean by ‘that Vice-Captain’?”

 ”Eek!”

Cassandra, who had been lurking right behind her, clamped her hand onto Mercedes’ head in a brutal grip. Her voice was low and dangerously cool-the kind of tone that would be incredibly attractive if it weren’t so terrifying.

”Come on, Mercedes. Don’t hold back on my account. Let’s hear it.”

 ”Um, Vice-Captain, are you angry…?”

”Well, I did dump all the squad work on you yesterday, so I was prepared to be a little lenient.”

”No, no, no! I can hear my skull creaking! It hurts! It really hurts!”

”Hahaha! Surely it’s not that bad yet?”

And so, Mercedes’ punishment began. It must have been a common sight, because the other knights just glanced over with “there they go again” expressions and went back to their business.

 ”Daisuke-san, help me!”

”Not a chance. You said it, you own it. Consider this a much-needed lesson in reflection.”

 ”Noooooo!”

”Besides,” I added, “Cassandra is plenty cute. She might be older than me, but she’s definitely no ‘old hag.’”

 ”Hmph…”

”Oh? Daisuke-san, nice! Her grip softened! Quick, keep praising her! Save me!”

I hadn’t intended to support her, but it seemed to have worked in her favor. My words actually seemed to have reached Cassandra’s heart.

”I’m not trying to help you, Mercedes. Just take a moment to actually reflect.”

”Ack! The pressure’s back! I’m reflecting! I promise, I’m reflecting!”

”As if a reflection that shallow counts for anything!”

 ”GYAAAH!”

Mercedes was twitching on the ground after Cassandra’s Iron Claw¹, but she’d probably be fine.

* * *

Today was another travel day, which meant a lot of running. I wanted to take the opportunity to talk to Her Fünf and the Golden Dragon’s Breath, since I hadn’t had much of a chance yesterday. We might need some serious coordination for the upcoming operation. I started with Her Fünf, since they were nearby.

”Morning. Get enough rest last night?”

”Thanks to you, yeah. Even on a mission, we made sure to get some quality ‘husband and wife’ time in.”

Hannah, the leader, responded casually. She had the kind of ripped, muscular physique you’d see on a comic book superhero, so I figured she was a vanguard, but her personality was surprisingly soft.

”So, Hannah is married to Heinz, and Hilde is also Heinz’s wife, right?”

”That’s right. I’m lucky to have them both,” Heinz chimed in.

”Oh, stop it, Heinz. You’re the wonderful one.”

”Yeah, we’re the ones who are glad to be your wives.”

 ”Thanks, girls.”

Heinz was a burly human, but despite his rugged looks, he was humble and attentive. His two wives were clearly head-over-heels for him. I felt a pang of envy. (No, no, I’m doing fine with my own girls! Once we get back to the capital, I’ll be having just as much fun!)

”I better wrap this mission up quick and get home,” I muttered.

”What’s this? Daisuke, you’re a B-Rank and you’re sweating the small stuff? Just hit the weights! All your worries will vanish once you’re pumping iron! Gahaha!”

”Hugo’s right,” his wife Hedda added. “A man’s gotta have muscles.”

Hugo, the bovine Beastman, was a pure meathead. Standing over two meters tall with an absolute armor of muscle, his physique was incredibly intimidating. His wife, Hedda, was apparently a muscle fetishist. Given my build, I was never going to be her type, but—hey, I’m not salty about it or anything!

Hedda seemed to be a rearguard, but she was wrapped in a robe, so it was hard to tell. Staring too hard at someone else’s wife is a bad look anyway, so I kept my eyes to myself.

”Have you five been a party for long?”

”About three years,” Hannah said. “Things happened with our old party.”

”Sounds like there’s a story there. If it’s hard to talk about, don’t worry about it.”

”No, it’s fine. I’ve made my peace with it.”

Hannah’s usually cheerful face darkened. I was going to drop it, but she decided to share anyway.

”We used to be in a party with another married couple—not Hedda and Hugo. We all got along great, just like we do now. But one day, that couple had a massive fight.”

 ”Did they get divorced?”

”If only. We took a contract the next day, but their coordination was a mess. The atmosphere was toxic. Right when things were at their worst, we got pincered by monsters. The wife… Helma… she took a heavy hit.”

 ”……”

Since a divorce would have been the “better” outcome, I knew where this was going.

”When her husband, Holger, saw her go down, he panicked. He was holding the other side of the line, but he abandoned his post to run to her. The whole formation collapsed. We didn’t have the strength to save them both. By the time we could blink, they were both dead.”

 ”I see…”

I’ve been having things easy lately, so it’s easy to forget: being an adventurer is a life-or-death gamble. There are so few B-Ranks because most people either die or retire by the time they hit C-Rank. Lose an arm or a leg, and your career is over.

You could say Hannah’s old party was hit by a streak of bad luck, or you could say they were lucky the whole party didn’t get wiped out. If you fight for safety, you end up as an older C-Rank, which isn’t a bad life, but the adventurer community looks down on it. It’s hard to change the brawn-over-brains mindset of the average meathead.

”And that’s why,” Hannah concluded, “you’ve gotta make sure there are no regrets. ‘Couples’ time’ in the bedchamber is vital.”

”Hannah-san, it’s embarrassing when you put it like that…”

”Hahaha, sorry! Hilde’s the shy one, you see.”

Basically, she was saying, “Yesterday, we had s*x to our hearts’ content,” so Hilde was embarrassed.

* * *

Next, I decided to talk to the Golden Dragon’s Breath. I wasn’t sure if Moritz had actually learned his lesson, but he seemed to be behaving for the duration of the mission.

 ”Yo. Get some rest?”

”…I have nothing to say to you. Get lost.”

Yep, Moritz was still Moritz. He was always an ass, but losing that fight had clearly bruised his ego. Peter the Priest had obviously been working hard; his arm, which I’d given a complex fracture, was back to normal. However, his broken horn was still missing, and the armor on his mangled arm was gone. Healing magic doesn’t fix metal, and they probably didn’t have time to buy a replacement.

”Don’t be like that. I’m not asking to be best friends, but if we can’t manage basic communication, the mission is going to go south.”

”We move as our own unit. As long as we get results, you have no right to—”

”Moritz. You’re going on point. Secure the path ahead.”

Vait cut off Moritz’s rambling. “Going on point” was basically code for “get out of here.”

”Vait-sama?! But what about your safety—”

”That’s what the safety securing is for. Besides, this guy alone is stronger than all of us combined.”

 ”Guh… understood.”

Moritz couldn’t argue with that, considering I’d put him out of commission in one hit. Looking thoroughly miserable, he ran off toward the front.

”At least he’s listening to you,” I noted.

”For now. Having the title Apostasy (Conditional)² hanging over our heads is a problem I’d rather avoid.”

Vait answered normally, his attitude a sharp contrast to Moritz. Losing seemed to have knocked the arrogance out of him.

”Even this morning, Moritz was still going on about how ‘nobles should be the last to arrive,’ but in our current situation, that’s just a bad move. Everyone knows I’m not actually a noble now anyway; pulling stunts like that would just make me a laughingstock.”

 ”Good call.”

Losing really was the best thing that could have happened to Vait. If he starts thinking for himself, he won’t be such a puppet for his parents or Moritz.

”Actually, Daisuke, I have a request.”

 ”What is it?”

”I know my friends are headed in a different direction, so it might be difficult… but would you consider being my master?”

 ”Wait, what?”

I wasn’t expecting an apprenticeship request. Then again, being surrounded by Moritz and hired yes-men probably makes it hard to find honest guidance. There was no guarantee he’d find another adventurer aiming for nobility either, let alone one he’d get along with. Even I didn’t have a lead for him when I told him to find equals.

”Once this mission is over, I’m changing my loadout. But Moritz and the others… none of them know how to use a mace.”

 ”Well, yeah, I guess not.”

”Even once a month would be enough. Would you please train me?”

 ”Hmm…”

To be honest, there wasn’t much in it for me. I could make way more money hunting on the sixteenth floor of the dungeon, and Vait was, well, a guy. But I felt a bit responsible since I was the one who gave him the advice. (If I could turn a trash pseudo-noble into a decent person, I guess that counts as community service.)

”Fine. We’ll hammer out the details later, but I’ll teach you some club techniques.”

 ”Really? Thank you!”

Vait’s smile was surprisingly genuine and refreshing. (No, I’m not into guys, but he’s a good-looking kid when he’s not being a jerk.)

The rest of the second day passed smoothly, and by evening, we arrived at our destination town.

 —

 Summary:

The group continues their journey on the second day. Daisuke interacts with various parties, learning about the grim past of Her Fünf and the shifting dynamics within Golden Dragon’s Breath. The chapter concludes with Vait asking Daisuke to be his master.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Peter’s horn is still broken because healing magic only fixes biology, not equipment/calcified accessories.

 - The penalty for misconduct is severe enough to force even the arrogant Golden Dragon’s Breath to be punctual.

 - Hannah’s backstory highlights that party coordination is more important than individual skill in high-rank adventuring.

 - Vait is switching his main weapon to a mace/club following his defeat

 —

 Character Insight:

Vait shows significant growth by acknowledging his weaknesses and seeking mentorship from the man who defeated him. Daisuke shows a more mature side by accepting a ‘community service’ role despite no immediate profit.

 —

 Lore And Worldbuilding Context:

The ‘Iron Claw’ is a common comedic trope in anime/manga used by strict female characters to discipline noisy subordinates.

 —
