Chapter 71 The Miyajima Family Council (Part ①)

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The Miyajima Dojo was thick with the scent of sweat and the echoing bellows of a man losing his patience. “You bunch of morons! Look at Uesugi-kun! If even one of you had half his talent, I wouldn’t have to stress myself out like this!” Miyajima Sousuke stood there with a stiff, weathered face, spittle flying as he berated a group of disciples who were too ashamed to even lift their heads. “I could have taught a dog this move in the time I’ve wasted on you lot!”

Just as he was reaching a fever pitch, Aki and Miyajima Sakura walked in together, side-by-side. “Instructor Miyajima, we meet again,” Aki said. He looked at the line of burly men hanging their heads and asked curiously, “What’s got you in such a massive foul mood?”

”Oh, it’s just Uesugi-kun.” Sousuke’s fury vanished instantly, replaced by a forced, awkward smile. “It’s nothing. I was just giving these useless pupils of mine a bit of ‘instruction’.”

”Clearly, he’s just taking it out on us because he got his ass kicked this morning…” One of the disciples-whoever it was must have had some serious balls-muttered the truth under his breath. A vein throbbed on Sousuke’s forehead. He nearly snapped right then and there, ready to give Aki a front-row seat to a “dojo cleaning.”

”Uh…” Aki cast a look of genuine pity toward a buzz-cut man in the crowd. The others might not have caught who said it, but it hadn’t escaped Aki’s ears or eyes. “Well… Instructor Miyajima, I’ll leave you to your work. Sakura-senpai¹ and I will wait for you in the back,” Aki said.

”Very well. Uesugi-kun, please, make yourself at home,” Sousuke replied. He used the last of his patience to look at his daughter. “Sakura, look after Uesugi-kun, do not be neglectful.”

 ”I understand, Father,” Sakura said.

The moment they stepped out of the training hall, the sound of Miyajima Sousuke’s explosive, thunderous roar erupted behind them. “Uesugi, have you been to my house before?” Sakura asked. She looked back, her expression thoughtful. “My father seems to hold you in very high regard…”

”Yeah. I didn’t know which school you’d transferred to, so I stopped by the dojo this morning to ask. There was a bit of a misunderstanding, so your father and I had a brief… ‘exchange’ of skills,” Aki said. He shrugged, casually brushing the topic aside. He couldn’t exactly tell the girl that he’d wiped the floor with her old man.

”Then it sounds like Uesugi-kun won,” Sakura said with a bright smile. She knew her father’s pride better than anyone; if he hadn’t lost, he would never be this polite to a junior. Before today, whenever she mentioned Aki, Sousuke always had a look of pure disdain-it was practically written on his face that the boy wasn’t good enough for his daughter.

Aki grinned. “In a pure Kendo match, I’m sure I’m no match for Instructor Miyajima. I just have a bit more experience in real brawls.” (You guessed right. Your old man really isn’t my match.)

Even though she’d suspected it, hearing the confirmation left Sakura stunned. “Is Uesugi-kun really that strong? I honestly had no idea.”

”It’s just a rough, self-taught style. I’ve hit a bit of a ceiling with it, which is why I was interested in checking out the clubs last time. I wanted to see if a formal style like Kendo could offer something new,” Aki said.

”If you’re looking for practical combat, school sports clubs won’t do much for you,” Sakura said seriously. “Our family’s Kendo descends from the Shinkage-ryu²…”

”Wait, wait…” Aki waved her off. He wasn’t particularly interested in the politics of Kendo schools. If he were going to pick up a weapon, he’d rather go look for some ancient Chinese manuals. To him, the “Dragon Country”³ had mastered eighteen different types of weaponry with unique flair, whereas Japan’s arts felt a bit more limited.

Then there were the Western styles-knightly longswords, shields, dual-wielding… all of them were both flashier and more practical for a real fight. “I’m not actually that interested in Kendo itself. I just want to use it as a reference to see if I can spark some new ideas.”

Sakura went quiet and smiled. “I suppose I was overthinking it. If you can beat my father, you certainly don’t need my guidance.”

The two chatted for a while longer until Miyajima Sousuke, having finally vented his rage, came rushing in. “Uesugi-kun, I apologize for my lack of discipline. You had to see a rather embarrassing side of us,” Sousuke said.

”You’re far too modest, Instructor Miyajima. Everyone in this area knows the reputation of your dojo,” Aki replied.

Sousuke had heard plenty of flattery in his time, but coming from Aki, it felt exceptionally earned. “Haha! It’s just an empty reputation, not worth mentioning. It’s nothing compared to you, Uesugi-kun. To have such power at such a young age, yet remain so humble… you’re worth a thousand of my useless disciples.”

Aki didn’t bother keeping the pleasantries going. Talking to an old man was nowhere near as fun as talking to a beautiful girl. He gave a polite nod and turned back to keep the conversation going with Sakura. Sousuke wasn’t offended; instead, he watched the two of them sitting together with a sense of relief.

Aki didn’t just have the looks to match his beautiful daughter-he had the strength to back it up. Sakura’s reputation as a prodigy wasn’t just talk; Sousuke knew he hadn’t been half as good as her at that age. In his mind, Sakura would likely reach his current level by her early twenties. Before Aki showed up, Sousuke’s plan was to find a talented man to marry into the family and eventually inherit the dojo.

The shoji door slid open with a soft rattle, and Miyajima Tsubaki entered the room carrying a tea tray. “What took you so long?” Sousuke barked, his brow furrowing.

 ”Dear…” Tsubaki began.

”I’m sorry for the trouble, Madam Miyajima. Preparing all of this alone must have been quite time-consuming,” Aki said, cutting in. Tsubaki shot a grateful look toward Aki, her sultry face blossoming into a smile.

”It was no trouble at all. It’s a rare treat to have Uesugi-kun visit us,” Tsubaki said.

Sousuke’s frown deepened. He felt Aki was being far too polite to a woman, especially one with no martial talent. However, he didn’t want to disrespect Aki, so he decided he’d have a chat with the boy about it in private later.

Tsubaki was still in the same outfit from the morning, but the flirtatious heat in her eyes seemed to have intensified. She stepped past Sousuke and knelt down slowly beside Aki, arranging the tea and snacks on the low table. With every movement, her curvaceous body seemed to brush against him-sometimes her leg, sometimes her chest.

She kept locking eyes with Aki, her gaze thick with an inviting, “springtime” lust. Every time Tsubaki made “accidental” contact with Aki, Sakura felt a pang of intense discomfort. Something was very wrong. Even Sakura could see that the way her mother was looking at Aki was far beyond “friendly.”

Unfortunately, the pathologically macho Sousuke only gave his wife a dismissive glance before ignoring her entirely. Just as Sakura was about to snap and offer to help serve the tea herself, the tray was finally empty. It had only been a minute or two, but to Sakura, it felt like hours. Watching the lingering, reluctant look Tsubaki gave Aki as she stood up, Sakura instinctively glanced at her father, who was sitting there with perfect, rigid posture. She wanted to say something-to warn him-but she was terrified she was just imagining things. Besides, she hated her father’s overbearing attitude and knew her mother’s life had been stifling.

In the end, she kept her mouth shut, but the look she gave her mother turned cold and heavy. (If you want a man, fine, but Aki is off-limits. I don’t want to come home and have to play backstabbing house games with my own mother.) After a long afternoon of thinking, Sakura had realized she wanted to be with Aki. He’d already taken so many “liberties” with her… there was no way she was letting him go now!

After a bit of tea and snacks, Sakura finally couldn’t hold it back anymore and brought up the events of the afternoon. “Uesugi, you said I was in danger. What exactly did you mean by that?”

Hearing that their daughter was in trouble, Sousuke and Tsubaki both froze. “Sakura? What happened? What kind of danger?” Sousuke asked.

”I don’t know either. Uesugi just found me and told me I was in trouble,” Sakura replied.

The entire Miyajima family turned their eyes to Aki, waiting for an answer. “Ahem…” Aki gave a dry cough and guiltily pulled his hand back from where it had been resting against Tsubaki’s thigh. He’d been so busy flirting and playing secret games with Tsubaki that he’d almost forgotten the main point. “Well…” Aki paused. “Instructor Miyajima, since you sent Sakura-senpai to Kuoh Academy, you must be aware of the… ‘special’ nature of that place, right?”
