I stepped into the building, a structure that looked like it had been plucked straight out of ancient Greece.
Inside, the air was still and cool, and a wide staircase descending into the depths of the earth.
Rather than heading straight for the descent, I veered off toward the Explorer Guild receptionist.
She was actually quite cute, standing there with an expectant look.
She must have recognized me, because the moment our eyes met, she flashed a brilliant, professional smile.
”Hello,” I said, keeping it casual. “I’m Hirosawa Kanade, leader of the A-Rank adventurer team ‘Resonant Melody.’ I’m here on a formal request from the Dungeon Explorer Guild to handle the complete conquest of this Phase Two dungeon.”
A ‘Complete Conquest’ was exactly what it sounded like: you fight your way to the bottom, kill the boss, and yank out the Dungeon Core.
Once that’s done, the whole place simply ceases to exist.
Usually, if a dungeon drops top-tier [Dungeon Materials]¹, the Guild keeps it on life support and tells explorers to play nice so it doesn’t vanish.
But if the loot is trash or the death rate is through the roof, the Guild puts out a hit on the place.
”Yes, we were expecting you,” she replied. “Requests for Phase Two conquests have been piling up lately. We actually have three teams inside right now… but don’t worry, they’ve already been briefed that this is a conquest run. You’re clear to proceed and finish the job.”
(Getting kicked out of a disappearing dungeon can be a hell of a shock, so I’m glad she gave them a heads-up,) I thought. It was one less thing to worry about.
”But… are you sure you’re okay going in solo?” she asked, her brow furrowing with genuine concern. “Even for a Phase Two, a full conquest is no joke.”
It was a fair question.
Usually, these jobs are reserved for high-level Explorers who live and breathe in Phase Three or Four.
I don’t like to toot my own horn, but the Guild officially recognizes me as one of those elites now.
”Yeah, I’m an A-Rank, so I should be fine,” I said. “Do you have the map?”
”Yes… here it is.”
She handed it over. For a dungeon this level, the path to the boss floor is usually common knowledge. You only go in blind for brand-new spawns, and those almost never get marked for conquest. I looked over the floor plan and asked a few questions.
”What’s the mob situation in the meadow area at the entrance?”
”Mostly beast-types,” she explained. “Grass Wolves and Killer Rabbits. You might run into a Gold Raccoon² as a Rare Spawn, but the drop rate is pretty abysmal.”
A Gold Raccoon… right. Those were the ones that dropped the ‘Golden Orbs.’ Two of them, guaranteed. As an Explorer, I could always use the extra cash, so I made a mental note to squash any golden trash pandas I saw.
”Got it. And the boss is in the cave at the foot of the mountain, right?”
”Yes. A High Goblin.”
”Easy enough. I’ve dealt with plenty of those. I should be done in a few hours, so you might want to start the paperwork for the collapse now.”
”A few hours? Wow! As expected of the rising star of ‘Resonant Melody,’ Kanade-sama!” she chirped.
She hesitated for a second, then timidly pulled a signature board from under the counter. “I—I’m so sorry to ask while you’re on the clock, but… could I get your autograph?”
”I mean, sure,” I said, reaching for the pen. “But are you sure you want mine? I’m the leader, but I’m not exactly a fan favorite like the other girls in the team.”
It was a simple fact.
The members of ‘Resonant Melody’—Mana, Minami-chan, Haruka-san, and our support, Rin-sensei—were all knockouts.
Mana and the others handled the front lines with me, while Rin-sensei worked as our dedicated Appraiser while keeping her day job at the academy.
They were gorgeous, talented, and incredibly popular.
Compared to them, I was just some plain guy who happened to be in charge.
”Well, that might be true for the general public,” she whispered, leaning in close, “but your autograph is a massive hit in certain circles, Kanade-sama! There’s a rumor that if you get a signature from the Harem Master who keeps all those elite beauties under his spell, you’ll be blessed with children! My husband and I are actually trying to conceive right now!”
”Wait… what?”
(So it’s not that I’m popular… I’m just a good luck charm for fertility?) I scribbled my name on the board, feeling a little surreal. If a signature helped her get motivated for her family life, I guess I didn’t mind. I handed it back to her.
”Thank you so much!” she squealed. “Could I… could I get a handshake too? For luck?”
”S-Sure.”
I took her hand, being incredibly careful not to accidentally trigger a (Pressure Point).
”Eeeeeeek! This is it! I’m definitely going to get pregnant now!!” she shouted, vigorously pumping my arm up and down with a manic grin.
(If anyone else heard this, they’d think I had some kind of ‘Impregnating Touch’ skill…) I thought, feeling the sweat start to bead on my neck.
”Is that so?” I managed to say.
”Oh, absolutely! I’m going to go home and give it my all tonight!!”
Being told something that graphic by a cute girl was definitely a trip, but I couldn’t let it go to my head. I waited for her to calm down before gently extracting my hand.
”Well, I’m heading out then.”
”Right! Thank you again! Please be careful down there!”
I gave the receptionist a final nod and started down the stairs, leaving the temple-like silence for the chaos of the dungeon.
