Volume 8 Chapter 9 Yumiko’s Motherly Meddling
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Liese’s experience grinding proceeded as usual, wrapping up without any unexpected hiccups.
She’s just a hair’s breadth away from hitting Level 20.
For those keeping track, Camilla is currently sitting at Level 18.
”Thank you as always, Master,” Liese said.
”Don’t worry about it. Training you is a given,” I replied. “But honestly, an Orc is hardly an opponent for my ‘serious spear’¹ work.”
Liese is so earnest she offers a polite bow for everything, but since I’d planned to level her up from the start, it wasn’t an issue.
She’d been practically begging to see my “Ultimate Spear” in action, but there was no way I was breaking that out against a bunch of muscle-brained Orcs.
The entire Orc lineage, even the high-ranking variants, are pure meatheads.
Even an Orc King is just a brute.
There are Orc Mages—the sorceress types—but they’re just morons who spam attack magic without a second thought.
If I’m ever going to satisfy Liese’s curiosity, it’s going to have to be in a real PVP scenario.
But with my Skill Level only at 7, I can’t exactly call myself a master of the “pinnacle” yet.
I’ll just have to track down some A-Rank or S-Rank adventurers with Level 8 skills… though I don’t actually know any S-Ranks.
They probably all have “strong personalities,” to put it lightly.
* * *
Lost in thought, I eventually arrived at the inn where the Yamato Nadeshiko² party was staying.
”Master, welcome back!” Camilla cried.
”Welcome back!” added another voice.
”I’m home. Everyone, thanks again for today,” I said.
”Don’t mention it! I had a blast myself!” Mai replied.
”Ufufu… they’re both just so precious, aren’t they?” Misaki added.
”Daisuke-san, you’re quite the smooth operator, huh?” Nanami teased.
”Ugh… Camilla-chan is leaving already…” Rin moaned.
”…I’ll come see you again,” Camilla promised.
”I’m doing this partly for my own enjoyment, so it’s all good. Phew…”
I gave the girls a quick hug and offered my thanks to the rest of the Yamato Nadeshiko crew.
Mai and Misaki were their usual selves, and Hina seemed normal enough too.
Nanami was clearly ribbing me about officially becoming lovers with Camilla.
Rin seemed to have bounced back from the initial shock, and it looked like she’d keep coming around.
I appreciated the sentiment.
What caught me off guard, however, was that Yumiko wasn’t blowing a gasket.
Given Camilla’s feelings, I couldn’t exactly keep our relationship a secret.
I’d kissed her right in front of Rin, after all; I knew Camilla would eventually spill the beans.
I’d braced myself for a massive lecture from Yumiko once she found out, but… nothing.
In fact, her lack of confrontation was downright eerie.
She didn’t seem angry, exactly—more like she was troubled. Or just plain exhausted.
”Is something the matter? Did the girls… did Ilse do something rude?” I asked.
”What?! I didn’t do a thing!” Ilse barked.
”I know, I know. Just take it easy, Ilse,” I said.
There was no way Camilla would act out, so I figured it might have been Ilse, but that didn’t seem to be it either.
Was it really just the news about me and Camilla? I stroked the fuming Ilse’s hair to calm her down while shooting a questioning look at Yumiko.
”Daisuke-kun, do you have a moment?” Yumiko asked.
”Of course,” I replied.
”Yumiko-san…” Camilla started.
”I know, Camilla-chan. You don’t need to be so defensive. It’s okay,” Yumiko said.
(What’s that about?) I wondered. Why was she speaking to Yumiko like that? Not quite following the vibe, I stepped a short distance away to hear what was on Yumiko’s mind.
”Did Camilla say something disrespectful?” I asked.
”It’s not that. It’s just… Daisuke-kun, you’ve officially made Camilla-chan your lover, haven’t you?” Yumiko asked.
”I have. A lot happened, but that’s where we landed. I intend to cherish her, and I won’t be neglecting Liese or Ilse either,” I replied.
”…I see. Please, make sure you keep that promise,” Yumiko said.
”I will,” I promised.
She was taking the news better than I’d feared.
In my previous life, doing anything sexual with a fourteen-year-old would be a one-way ticket to a police station, and even just dating would get you branded a social pariah.
Here, though, the rules were different.
Still, I was certain Yumiko would be the one to hold me to those old standards, so this felt like a bit of a letdown.
”I heard from Rin-chan that she saw the two of you kissing,” Yumiko explained. “So, I sat Camilla-chan down for a talk. I told her that she’s only fourteen—that she’s too young for these kinds of adult relationships. I told her not to get swept up in the heat of the moment just because she’s young. I told her she needs to be more cautious.”
”I see,” I said.
(So she had tried to intervene.) To the people involved, it’s nothing but unwanted meddling, but I get it. For someone in Yumiko’s age bracket, that’s just how they view the world.
”But Camilla-chan just looked me in the eye and said, ‘I will never, ever leave Master.’ I might have been a little too harsh in my rebuttal, and… well, she got quite angry,” Yumiko said.
”Yeah, I can imagine,” I replied.
Camilla isn’t the type to back down easily.
You’d have to do more than threaten her to get her to quit.
I glanced back and saw her staring at us with an intensity that bordered on predatory.
She wasn’t just “worried”—she was on high alert.
”It turned into a full-blown argument. Eventually, I just had to give up. When a girl looks you in the eye and tells you to ‘just end me then’ if you want to stop her… well, there’s not much left to say,” Yumiko said.
”Haha… wow,” I managed.
”She even warned me not to tell you to break up with her,” Yumiko added.
”So that’s why you’re just giving me the play-by-play,” I said.
(Is Camilla okay? She isn’t turning into a total yandere³, is she?)
Yumiko gave a bitter laugh.
She’d clearly tried her best to talk some sense into the girl but had finally folded.
I doubt Camilla was literally ready to die, but the sheer resolve in those words was enough to end the debate.
Apparently, once Rin and Hina saw how serious Camilla was, they hopped over to her side, while Mai and Misaki—who are surprisingly level-headed—had to step in to calm Yumiko down.
”I know I’m being a busybody,” Yumiko said softly. “But looking at Camilla-chan and Ilse-chan… it just reminds me so much of when my own children were small. I can’t help myself.”
”You did mention you were a mother,” I said.
”They both moved out and started their own lives a long time ago,” Yumiko said.
”Oh, you have two?” I asked.
”Yes. Especially Ilse-chan—that stubborn streak of hers, and the way her eyes light up when she sees sweets… she’s the spitting image of my son when he was little,” Yumiko said.
”Haha…” I laughed awkwardly.
(I mean, Ilse is pretty boyish. If you didn’t know how greedy she gets between the sheets, you’d probably think she was just a rowdy kid. I’d better not say that out loud, though.)
”So, I can’t promise I’ll stop worrying about them. Even my own kids used to complain that I was overprotective,” Yumiko admitted.
”Well, thank you for looking out for them,” I said.
Honestly, it is a bit much. But if she’s doing it because she actually cares, I can’t exactly be a jerk about it. I still need her to watch over them, and I don’t want to get on her bad side.
”Daisuke-san, got a sec?” Nanami chirped.
”Sure, what’s up?” I asked.
”So I hear you and Camilla-chan are official now? Nice work, Romeo! Nudge nudge♪” Nanami teased.
”Hahaha, very funny,” I said.
I went back to stroking Camilla’s and Ilse’s hair, only for Nanami to keep the pressure on.
”Anyway, I’ve got some great news! Hina says she wants to come over to your place too,” Nanami said.
”Oh?” I asked.
”Nanami! Watch your phrasing!” Hina shrieked.
(What’s this about?) There was no way Hina actually wanted to get “friendly” with me. It had to be a Camilla thing.
”Daisuke-san… I just… I want to join Rin in adoring—I mean, taking care of Camilla-chan,” Hina stammered.
”Yeah, I figured as much,” I said.
”Ehh? But it amounts to the same thing, doesn’t it?” Nanami grinned. “A young woman wanting to visit a young man’s bachelor pad…”
”It’s—that’s not—I mean, Daisuke-san is a good person, but I’m not thinking about that yet!” Hina yelled.
”Oh? So Hina-san is thinking about it? Just ‘not yet’?” Nanami teased.
”Wait! Did I just dig my own grave again?!” Hina cried.
”Yup♪” Nanami laughed.
”Aaaah! This is so embarrassing!” Hina wailed, collapsing into a hot mess.
Her “total disaster” energy was honestly adorable. I wanted to pat her head, but I figured that’d probably count as sexual harassment, so I held back.
”If you want to come over, Hina, you’re more than welcome. I assume you’ll just come on the same day as Rin?” I asked.
”Y-yes…” Hina whispered.
”…Got it,” Rin added.
”Oh, and I’m coming too!” Nanami chimed in.
”Wait, you too? Alright, fine,” I said.
Nanami was definitely just coming along to mess with Hina. She hadn’t been this pushy when it was just her and Rin. Still, I wasn’t going to say no to having more beautiful girls at the house.

After dropping the three of them off, I headed back to the 16th floor for some routine grinding.
At this point, it wasn’t even a challenge; I was just going through the motions.
However, I needed to start laying the groundwork for my future plans.
I’d been scattering high-end cosmetics around the 10th floor and beyond for a while now.
Apparently, they’ve become something of a local legend in the Royal Capital’s dungeon.
Next on the list was distributing items made from dragon materials.
I hadn’t started yet because I’d spent all of last night “busy” with Meta.
My Skill Levels are maxed out, so crafting isn’t the problem—it’s the optics.
If I just handed them directly to someone like Regina, it would draw way too much attention.
It’s better to let them circulate a bit first to avoid unnecessary drama, though they’ll still be incredibly expensive.
That said, it’s probably time to push deeper into the dungeon.
The 16th floor is great for meat, but I’m starting to crave more XP.
The 17th floor is a skip because Sandworms are a massive pain in the ass for the reward they give, so that means the 18th floor is next.
I’d expected a desert, but surprisingly, it’s the opposite.
It’s a massive swampland.
The new players on this floor are the Karkinos⁴ and the Crag-Whelp⁵ Dragons.
The Karkinos are giant crab monsters.
Like Sandworms, they love to ambush you from underground.
Their Water and Earth magic is a nuisance, but the real threat is the passive Slashing, Impact, and Piercing buffs on their physical attacks.
They’re huge, they have a massive reach, and they can harden their shells, making for a long, grueling fight if you try to take them head-on.
Luckily, they’re weak to Fire and absolutely shredded by Lightning magic.
As for loot, you get their rock-hard pincers and carapaces—great for high-end gear—but the real prize is the meat.
The Royal Capital of Maultasche⁶ is landlocked, so fresh seafood is a luxury.
I’m definitely stocking up.
Then there’s the Crag-Whelp Dragon.
Despite the name, it’s not a true dragon, but a sub-dragon—basically a cousin to the Wyvern.
They’re covered in a stone-like shell and have their own Hardening skills.
They can’t fly and they move like molasses, but they have a massive bag of tricks: weak breath attacks, poison gas, and even combustible clouds that cause massive explosions.
They usually disguise themselves as boulders, but with my detection skills, I can spot them a mile away.
The loot is obvious: carapaces and meat.
Word on the street is that the stronger the monster, the better it tastes, so I have high hopes.
Liese would probably lose her mind over it.
From a culinary (and loot) perspective, there’s no reason not to move forward.
If I ever get a craving for pork cutlets or sukiyaki, I can always pop back down to the 16th floor.
I’ve got things to do tomorrow, so I’ll aim for the 18th floor the day after.
My heat resistance and stats are more than enough.
Man, there’s nothing like the thrill of a new hunting ground.

Summary:
Daisuke deals with the fallout of his relationship with Camilla. Yumiko attempts to intervene due to Camilla’s age but is silenced by the girl’s absolute devotion. Meanwhile, Daisuke plans to advance to the 18th floor to hunt seafood-like monsters.
—
Trivia:
- Liese is closer to Level 20 than Camilla is to Level 19.
- Orc Kings are canonically ‘meatheads’ in this world.
- Daisuke has been using the dungeon to ‘market test’ cosmetics.
- The 17th floor is skipped due to Sandworms being inefficient for XP.
- Maultasche is landlocked, making the Karkinos meat a high-value commodity
—
Character Insight:
Camilla shows a darker, more obsessive side (‘yandere’ vibes) by claiming she’d rather be killed than separated from Daisuke. Yumiko reveals her overprotectiveness stems from her own experiences as a mother.
—
Lore And Worldbuilding Context:
The author uses ‘Mind’ as a loanword for worrying/caring. The monster designs (Karkinos/Puppy Rock Dragon) are likely nods to Monster Hunter ecology (Daimyo Hermitaur/Basarios).

• Meta – A mature, curvy priestess with long blonde hair and a soft, pillowy figure, she glows with a pink aura of gratitude toward Daisuke, her lover and fellow adventurer—once a high-ranking duchess and abusive wife who now despises men no more, having been transformed by their bond.
