Chapter 88 Club Activities End and the Crest
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
This time, Rias didn’t need a reminder from Shitori Sona. She unfurled her slender, ink-black bat wings and drifted slowly toward the edge of the barrier.
The glasses—which had truly lost their ability to teleport—lay discarded in the brush, reflecting a piercing white glare under the sunlight.
”To think it could even use a Disguise…” Rias felt a prickle of irritation at being played by a Sacred Gear¹. “Since you’ve decided to be so uncooperative, I won’t insist on keeping you.”
She had been repulsed by the object from the start.
Sacred Gears were rare, but as the successor to the Gremory Family, she had seen her fair share.
If even Hyoudou Issei’s Boosted Gear hadn’t stirred her greed, she felt nothing for destroying this nameless pair of frames.
A magic attack laced with the power of destruction slammed into the flat, rimless glasses.
Under the assault, a crack finally webbed across the lenses that had remained pristine even within the Azure Flame.
Rias followed up with a second deep-red blast.
The cracks multiplied.
A third shot.
A fourth.
A fifth.
It took five full strikes before the lenses finally shattered, dissolving into tiny motes of light that vanished into the air.
Once the main lenses were gone, the frames and temples followed suit, scattering like dust in the wind.
By the time Rias launched her second attack, Aki and the others had reached the scene.
Watching the culprit finally meet its end, Aki felt a strange sense of peace—a relief far deeper than when he had reduced Tanaka Hajime to ash.
In that moment, something clicked for him.
(If this happens again, I won’t make the same mistake. I won’t let some troublesome replacement crop up.)
President, thanks to you.
I really didn’t have any way to deal with those glasses on my own,” Aki said sincerely.
”I don’t blame you. If anything, I should be thanking you,” Rias replied.
She pulled Aki’s face into her chest and laughed.
”If you hadn’t spotted it early, it would have been a nightmare to clean up by the time we noticed it. You just joined, and we really should have been there to guide you through your first mission.” Rias’s smile was radiant, her refined face looking exceptionally beautiful. “It’s a shame Yuto isn’t here, or we could have made this a proper welcome event for the club.”
Shitori Sona adjusted her glasses.
”If you’re going to call this a ‘club activity,’ don’t forget to file a report with the Student Council in advance.”
It was a rare joke from the usually stern Sona to lighten the mood.
Aki’s vision was currently obscured by a wall of snow-white skin, so he took the opportunity to regretfully—but firmly—burrow his head deeper into her cleavage.
Rias flushed, reaching down to steady Aki’s restless head.
He was rubbing against her so much her bra was shifting out of place; she couldn’t let him keep this up.
”President, can I drop the barrier now?” Himejima Akeno asked, looking slightly drained.
It wasn’t the Mana consumption so much as the mental fatigue.
If they had used a pre-set Magic Circle, she wouldn’t have had to focus so hard.
But this had been an emergency; there was no time for prep.
”Good work, Akeno. You can let it down,” Rias said.
She then turned to Abiki Mika and Shitori Sona.
”And thank you, Senior Abiki, Sona.”
Shitori Sona retracted her wings.
”With chaos breaking out in Kuoh Town, I can’t exactly sit back and just be the Student Council President.”
”Hey, hey, don’t think a ‘thank you’ lets you off the hook for my payment!” Abiki Mika shouted boisterously. “Also, is this kid really an Occult Research Club member? I see him hanging around the Student Council so much I figured he was one of President Shitori’s goons.”
Aki, still buried in Rias’s chest, felt his breath hitch.
He hadn’t planned on hiding the truth forever, but to be outed on Rias’s first day back—right after he’d been clinging to her so shamelessly—he hadn’t even prepared a defense.
(I haven’t even thought of an explanation yet!) To his surprise, Rias and Sona shared a knowing look and collectively ignored the comment.
”Senior Abiki’s reward will be paid in full, naturally,” Rias said, maintaining the poise of the Gremory family.
”However, I’ll need you to keep an eye on things here for a few days.
If anything feels off, use your mental magic to handle the fallout.”
”No problem,” Abiki Mika replied.
She was confident in her skills, especially when it came to mind control.
Even if someone was suspicious, she’d just put in the extra effort to completely rewrite their memories.
* * *
Back at the Occult Research Club, Rias held Aki’s left hand as a complex, eerie pattern took shape on his skin.
Aki didn’t know why Rias and Sona were avoiding the topic of the Evil Pieces, but he wasn’t about to bring it up himself.
After the glasses were dealt with, Rias had made a call, and they had used Space Magic to return to the academy.
The ORC handled the “problem,” while a separate cleanup crew handled the aftermath.
As for how they would explain away the lost hour to the faculty and students at Aisu Academy, or why everyone shared the same dream… that wasn’t Aki’s problem.
Abiki Mika had already handled the hypnosis release and memory fog.
If the cleanup crew couldn’t solve the rest, they might as well quit.
”There. As long as you show this mark, you’ll avoid a lot of trouble,” Rias said, releasing his hand. “Of course, it might also bring you bigger crises.”
Aki was ready for that.
For every person who feared the Gremory name, there would be someone who hated it.
He could feel Rias’s lingering presence radiating from the back of his hand.
”President, will this mark show up automatically whenever I use Mana?”
”For now, yes. Once you’re used to it, you can control it at will,” Rias said.
Aki channeled his Mana.
A strange, partial circle glowed a faint red on his hand.
(Pretty cool. I always wanted a tattoo in my past life but never got the chance. Guess this is one way to live the dream.)
Rias sat back at her mahogany desk, hands clasped under her chin.
”I originally wanted to give you this mark myself and take you on a Stray Devil hunt to show you the ropes before sending you out on contracts. I didn’t expect Akeno to give you such a dangerous mission while I was gone…”
”Ara ara~” Akeno interjected with a pout. “The mission I gave little Aki was very simple. No danger at all. This incident was something he got into on his own—nothing to do with me.”
To prove her point, she turned to Aki.
”Little Aki, the task I gave you was simple, right?”
Aki’s mouth twitched.
Amano Yuuma was leagues more dangerous than those glasses; at least the glasses didn’t threaten his life.
”Yeah, Senior Akeno only gave me one task. It was settled that afternoon, and the client was very satisfied.” He swallowed his complaints and played along.
He couldn’t easily explain the Raynare situation yet, so he kept it from Rias for now.
Besides, he wanted to see if he could squeeze info out of Raynare about scouting for Sacred Gears and how to strip them.
Whether he used the info or not, it was better to have it.
Rias nodded thoughtfully.
”I see. Then I suppose we don’t need a special club outing after all.”
Aki actually wanted to see them in action, but considering the mess he was in, he agreed.
”President, I can handle ordinary missions. Seeing you and Senior Akeno today was enough of a lesson.”
Usually, the ORC didn’t move as a unit; members worked alone.
Collective action was reserved for Rating Games or training rookies.
Aki was a rookie, but not really.
In terms of raw combat, he was already on par with Koneko’s base form.
And contracts that required the Nekomata form hadn’t appeared many times to date.
Rias finally decided that destroying the glasses counted as Aki’s initiation.
With the mark granted and his membership official, she turned to the only other male member.
”Akeno, what has Kiba been up to? He didn’t even respond to the emergency support scroll.”
Aki had always had his doubts about Kiba Yuto’s true gender.
Setting aside the official art of the big-breasted sister “Kiba Yuko,” every time he saw the guy around Rias, he never felt a shred of “male” energy coming from him…
