Beyond-Abyss 144

Chapter 144 At the End of the Battle

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Goddammit! Why is this happening to me?!” I screamed internally. “I’ve got all these allies, yet I’m the only one getting singled out for a public execution!?”

The Beast, having regained its cunning, drew its iron club back to the absolute limit.

(Focus! If I wait until he swings to react, I’m dead before I even blink! After talking all that big talk, I can’t let this end in an instant!) While I was crying tears of rage on the inside, I had no choice but to lock in.

”Here we go, brat! Don’t you dare go down too easy!” the monster roared.

The second the Beast’s shoulder and elbow twitched, I read the trajectory.

I lunged inside his reach while sliding to the right, the stone floor shattering behind me.

Panicking and trying to keep my distance would be a death sentence; if I gave him an inch, he’d just vent his breath or use that light-speed swing.

Diving into the pocket—where he had the most blind spots and couldn’t adjust his aim—was my only shot at survival.

I drove the Kondou-spear¹ into his gut on the counter, and his carapace crumbled in small, brittle chunks.

Just as I thought—the rot had made him fragile.

I slipped between his legs and began shredding his back.

I was chipping away at the shell, but I wasn’t reaching the actual flesh yet.

 ”Ballista²!” I yelled.

Accelerated by my Blast, the Kondou-spear slammed into the spot on his waist that Fujisaki had already softened up.

 It connected.

 ”ROOOAAAR!” the Beast howled.

He spun around, swinging his club in a blind fury, but I slipped through his feet and circled back, hammering attacks into his thin-armored flanks and the backs of his knees.

If I let him dictate the pace, I was done.

My only choice was to stay glued to his blind spots and keep whittling him down.

He threw a back-heel kick at me, but I dodged, staying stuck to his back like a shadow.

 I could see every move.

 (Don’t lose focus now!)

The Beast dropped his hips and made a massive leap to the side.

His club swept through the air where I’d just been standing, but I was already dashing toward his landing zone.

He was desperate to shake me off, but I stayed one step ahead, relentlessly chipping away at his health.

One hit and I’m history, but his wounds just keep regenerating.

I have to keep the pressure on.

If I keep him bleeding, his healing factor has to hit its limit eventually.

Probably. I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel yet, but you should never underestimate a hardcore gamer.

I’d spent an entire long weekend with zero sleep just to take down Yazmat³ and its fifty million HP.

 This was just another grind.

”You little…! Stop scurrying around like a damn bug!” the Beast spat.

”Your blind spots grew as much as your ego! You can’t touch me, you slow-ass oaf!” I retorted.

I’ve been training against Fujisaki and Himeno every single day; there was no way a sluggish monster burdened by debuffs was going to catch me.

I clung to the Beast’s back and thrust the Kondou-spear deep into the wound still venting white smoke.

* * *

”Whoa! Whoa! Tsuchimiya-senpai is incredible! Look, Miki-senpai! Look, look, look!” Hagiwara Akane bounced up and down, her pigtails swaying with every hop.

”I’m looking, damn it! Just calm down!” Osako Miki snapped at Akane, who was buzzing around and shaking her by the shoulders.

”I can’t! Tsuchimiya-senpai is just too cool!” Even while bouncing, Akane’s feverish gaze never left the battlefield.

She looked like she was about to stroke out from pure adoration.

”Well, he is doing the damn thing, I’ll give him that,” Miki admitted. “At this point, nobody could complain if he claimed to be the strongest in the Academy.”

 ”Right?! Right?!” Akane squealed.

Miki respected Tsuchimiya Takeru’s courage for challenging that Beast to a duel, but she hadn’t expected him to last ten seconds.

Yet, Tsuchimiya was the one dealing all the damage.

His footwork allowed him to stay glued to the thrashing Beast’s back, and his reaction speed was nothing short of extraordinary.

She could only imagine the sheer level of concentration required to maintain that.

But she still couldn’t see a path to victory.

 He lacked a finishing blow.

No matter how much he chipped away, the situation wouldn’t improve.

Eventually, he would tire, his movements would slow, and the Beast would catch him.

(In the end, we’re gonna have to jump in and crush that thing together,) Miki thought, tightening her grip on her war hammer.

Just then, a familiar voice called out from behind her.

”Oh, hey, Mikitty. Perfect timing. Give me a hand with something.”

”Huh?” Miki turned around irritably to find Hano Chikako approaching with a carefree wave.

”Chika. What do you want?” Miki tried to sound cold, but Chikako didn’t seem to notice.

Their respective groups interacted, but Miki didn’t consider herself “friends” with Chikako; they were just acquaintances.

Chikako, however, acted friendly with everyone.

”You’re a Heavy Armorer, right, Mikitty? I’m having a bit of trouble since I’m not strong enough on my own. I need your help.”

”We’re a little busy right now! Our entire future is riding on this fight!”

”Exaaactly,” Chikako replied. “And apparently, our ‘future’ is riding on this little mission.”

 ”A mission?”

”Yep! Lean in for a sec.” Chikako leaned in familiarly, standing on her tiptoes to whisper into Miki’s ear.

As she listened to the explanation, the color drained from Miki’s face.

”What?! Are you serious?! Do you even realize what position you’re putting me in?! Besides, that doesn’t even make sense!”

”Shh! You’re being too loud!” Chikako slapped a hand over Miki’s mouth. “I don’t really get it either, but it’s an order from Asu-asu, so there must be a reason.”

”Higurashi Asuka, huh…? Well, if it’s an order from the First Unit Commander, I have a decent excuse. But what happens if things go south?”

”Like I said, if Tsucchi loses, it’s game over for everyone anyway. Asu-asu says this is the trump card we need to save him.”

”We’re going to help Tsuchimiya-senpai?! Count me in!” Akane, who had been shamelessly eavesdropping, raised her hand enthusiastically.

”Oh, aren’t you a firecracker?” Chikako laughed. “Your gear is Heavy Infantry class, right?”

”Yes! Hagiwara Akane, First Year, Class B, Heavy Infantry! I want to be useful to Tsuchimiya-senpai and rack up some points!”

”Akane, keep it down,” Miki hissed.

She glanced over at Togamine to ensure the boy wasn’t listening.

Togamine bore a grudge against Takeru and certainly wouldn’t be happy if she heard them, but fortunately, their conversation was buried under the cheers of the other students.

”Alright! That’s two down! Hagi-hagi, lean in.”

”You’re really dragging me into this?” Miki sighed.

”Fine. But don’t blame me if this goes sideways.”

* * *

 ”Hoshikawa-san is in position?”

”Yeah! She’s all set! I’ve got the Universal Potion ready, too!” Onitsuka Momoko answered Higurashi Asuka’s question over the phone.

”A little over a minute until the chant is complete. Once it’s ready, how long can you delay the activation?” Higurashi asked.

Hoshikawa Kirari chimed in. “I can hold it for about a minute… I’m not confident I can go any longer than that.”

”Understood,” Higurashi replied. “An accidental discharge is the last thing we need. If it feels like you’re losing control, don’t force it. Cancel the spell, recover your mana, and start over.”

 ”…Copy that.”

”Report in for the start and completion of the chant, and every time you cancel the standby. Understood?”

 ”Yeah, leave it to us!”

”Then start the chant on my signal.”

 ”Roger!”

Higurashi pulled the phone away and checked the southern passage.

Two rows of stone pillars erected by the mages stood at the entrance, staggered to leave a gap just wide enough for one person to pass.

The depths were shrouded in darkness.

Hoshikawa Kirari was positioned at the very back of this tunnel.

The line of fire was a straight shot connecting the southern passage to the blocked northern one.

The Beast was capable of reflecting long-range attacks, but they had landed a direct hit with the initial volley.

Once the Beast realized the subsequent Magic Missiles weren’t dealing any real damage, it stopped even bothering to absorb them.

This meant the reflection wasn’t an automatic ability; it required a conscious effort.

If that was the case, it shouldn’t be able to react to a surprise attack from outside its awareness.

Higurashi was gambling everything on a sniper shot from Hoshikawa Kirari’s high-level magic.

However, if the spell were somehow reflected back, the casualties would be catastrophic.

 This was a last resort.

Near the center of the room, the duel between Tsuchimiya Takeru and the Beast raged on.

From Higurashi’s vantage point, they were clustered to the west and clear of the line of fire.

However, the war hammer the Beast had dropped—still crackling with red lightning—lay directly in the path of the shot.

(Still… he’s doing an incredible job,) Higurashi thought.

Takeru was relentlessly attacking from the Beast’s blind spots.

When he’d let himself be provoked into a duel, she’d felt like knocking him senseless herself.

But he was successfully buying time.

”As I thought, Tsuchimiya-senpai truly shines in one-on-one combat,” she muttered.

But a single minor mistake would cost him his life. She needed to make her move.

Higurashi tapped her phone, selecting Amahara Karen’s name for a private call.

Just then, a wave of shock and cheering erupted from the students.

(You’ve got to be kidding me. He isn’t actually going to win this, is he?)

Feeling a mix of disbelief and exasperation, Higurashi put the phone to her ear.

”Hello, it’s me. I need to speak with you privately, urgently. If there were a way to save Kibakura-senpai, would you take it? …I’m serious. The chances are slim, but they aren’t zero. …Right. I’ll keep this brief.”

* * *

 ”ROOOAAAR!”

The Beast swung his club behind his back, but I slipped into his blind spot to dodge.

 ”Tina! Switch to the Estoc!”

 ”Understood!”

In a flash, the Kondou-spear vanished from my hand, replaced by a sword.

The Estoc was a sword designed for one thing: the thrust.

It had no cutting edge, but the tip was needle-sharp.

It felt like a massive version of one of those picks used to flip takoyaki.

I took a half-step back to manage the distance.

As the Beast swung its massive iron club, its body rotated, and its wide-open flank came into view right in front of me.

”Take this!” I lunged, driving the Estoc upward into its side.

 ”GARRHH!”

The Beast swung its club down in a panic, but I let go of the hilt and leaped back.

At that exact moment, I triggered Blast on the sword’s pommel.

The Estoc was driven deep into the Beast’s body, stopping only when the crossguard hit home.

 ”Ga… hah!”

 That definitely did the trick.

The Beast staggered, spitting blood from its mouth.

(This has to be enough to slow it down…)

 ”You… bastard…”

It let go of its club and reached for the sword to pull it out.

I didn’t give it a second of breathing room.

I used the Kondou Spear to hack away at the chest armor-which was already starting to knit back together-and shredded it from the front.

”Come on! Breathe some fire! What, are you scared?! Get up!”

If the internal organs were damaged enough, I thought there might be an internal explosion.

But the Beast didn’t take the bait.

It ripped the sword out, jumped back, and put some distance between us.

I tried to close the gap, but the Beast dropped low on all fours, clinging to the ground like a spider.

”Tch…!” My blind spot was gone.

 ”GOGAAAAAAHHHH!”

The Beast bared its fangs and roared.

A head-on charge would make me easy prey for those teeth.

I had no choice but to stop and keep my distance.

I tried to circle around at high speed, but the Beast was too quick, keeping me centered.

As I scrambled for a plan, it unhinged its jaws and pounced.

 ”Whoa!?”

I triggered a Blast to dodge diagonally backward.

I tried to land a counter-blow on its head, but its left claws were already flying toward me at a lethal speed.

 ”Dammit!”

A second Blast gave me the mid-air acceleration I needed to clear the claws.

The Beast turned instantly and pounced again.

It was significantly faster on four legs than it had been on two.

I leaped and “kicking” the air to change direction, finally putting some space between us.

This four-legged form was a nightmare.

A frontal assault meant getting bitten, and with its increased speed, any careless move was a death sentence.

It wasn’t even thinking about defense anymore; it was just pure, desperate predatory instinct.

”Hey! Where’s your dignity?! Stand up! Stand up, Kibakura!”

 ”UGAAAAAH!”

Ignoring my shout, the Beast closed the distance.

I tried to use high-speed hover movements to get around it, but it stayed locked on me.

If this kept up, it was only a matter of time before I got caught.

It suddenly accelerated for a pounce, which I barely dodged by jumping.

I used a Blast to pivot in mid-air and drove the Kondou Spear straight into its back.

I stood on its spine and stabbed downward repeatedly with the spear, carving through the carapace.

 ”GOAAAAAAHH!”

The enraged Beast began to thrash, trying to buck me off.

I clung to the spear for dear life, but the world tilted as the floor rushed up to meet me.

I leaped away into the air.

Below me, the Beast rolled onto its back and opened its mouth wide.

A brilliant white light overflowed from its throat.

CRAP! THUMP! The breath attack fired like a cannon.

I triggered Blast at the last second, blowing myself sideways.

I hit the floor and tumbled before coming to a stop.

I adjusted my breathing while glaring at the Beast as it slowly hauled itself up.

It looked like most of the damage I’d dealt had already healed.

(Is there no way to end this? And why am I the only one struggling?! I’m demanding a raise!)

Just then, I sensed three presences approaching from behind.

Reinforcements! They finally realized something was wrong.

The Beast growled, but the figures approaching had a steady, unflinching stride-they were clearly veteran warriors.

 I could feel a skin-prickling pressure-an aura-radiating from them.

Well, except for one of them who looked a bit sketchy.

 ”Eh?”

 The presence swept past me.

I looked over and saw Amahara-senpai, her long black hair fluttering as she radiated a commanding spirit.

Behind her were Akari and a trembling Chikako.

”No! Get back, Amahara-senpai! What are you two doing?! Let me go!”

In the back, Togamine was having a meltdown, being physically held back by Osako-san and Hagiwara-san.

The Beast was already on top of us.

 ”Stop! Amahara-senpai!!”

I tried to rush forward, but Akari blocked me, extending her arm to bar my path.

Sweat of pure tension beaded on Akari’s face.

The Beast leaped at Amahara-senpai, jaws wide.

 ”Kibakura Reiji!!”

Amahara shouted with such authority that the Beast froze mid-air.

Its razor-sharp claws were inches from her shoulders.

”Are you truly such a weak man?!” Pushed back by her spirit, the Beast actually recoiled. “Weren’t you trying to save everyone in your own way?! Is this the result?!”

”Guu… gh!” The Beast staggered back another step. “What… what do you… know?!” The words tore out of the Beast’s throat.

”I don’t know! How could I understand?! But you knew this would happen long ago, didn’t you?! And you suffered through it alone without saying a word to anyone!”

 ”GUOOOO… OOOOH!”

The Beast covered its face with its right hand, thrusting the other out weakly as if pleading for her to stop.

The Beast that hadn’t flinched at my blades was terrified of Amahara-senpai.

It was terrified of her words.

”Why didn’t you talk to us?! Was it just your pride?! You put every one of us in danger for that?! We aren’t all people who would happily entrust our lives to your recklessness! Did you ever have the resolve required to lead this entire school?!”

 ”AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!”

The Beast writhed, letting out a roar of pure agony.

 RINGGGGGGGGGGG-

I was mesmerized by the scene, but a sudden sound snapped me out of it.

The Kondou Spear was emitting a clear, high-pitched hum I’d never heard before.

(The spear? Is this the signal Hiromi talked about?!)

 Half-doubting, I raised the spear.

With a mechanical snap, the tip splayed open into three blades, forming a trefoil shape.

(What the hell?! I’ve never seen it do this! But… it’s a signal, isn’t it?)

I moved in silence. I stepped in and drove the Kondou Spear into the Beast’s chest.

 ”Gah… ah…!?”

”Tsuchimiya!” Amahara-senpai cried out in shock.

The spearhead bit into the carapace but didn’t pass through.

Instead, a single card materialized, seemingly drawn to the three-pronged tip.

I caught it! The Sacred Artifact Card!

I felt a massive resistance as I tried to pull the spear back.

The card-depicting a beast wearing a crown-was slowly being dragged out.

Static discharge clung to the card, trying to pull it back in.

 GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNN!!

The spear’s hum intensified, sending a violent vibration through my arms.

Then, the card began to disintegrate from the edges, crumbling into sand.

”Gah…! Guaah!” The Beast writhed in torment.

(Is it… absorbing the card?! This never happened in the future! Did the Kondou Spear see those visions with me? Did it change its own form just to extract the card so we wouldn’t repeat the same mistake?!)

As the card vanished, the Beast’s carapace crumbled away and its frame began to shrink.

The Beast’s hand clamped onto the spear shaft.

”Hey! Kibakura! Let it go! You’re plenty strong without this garbage!”

 ”Gu… ugh!”

The strength drained from the Beast’s hand.

The Sacred Artifact Card let out one final, blinding flash before being sucked into the spear.

As the final fragment vanished, the vibration died away.

Kibakura-who had become much smaller, but was still a massive man-slumped to the floor.

He sat cross-legged, head bowed, his shoulders heaving with ragged breaths.

In the massive room, only the sound of his breathing remained.

”Kibakura… -kun?” Amahara-senpai spoke up hesitantly.

”…Yeah?” Kibakura replied without looking up, sounding incredibly embarrassed.

”Um… you should probably borrow some clothes from someone…” Amahara-senpai turned her head away, her face flushing red.

”Right… sorry about that.” Kibakura reached into the air, and a large cloth materialized in his hand.

He wrapped it around his waist.

’Ah… it seems there has been a system adjustment.’ Tina informed me that Kibakura’s Title had been updated.

”Tch… back to Level 1, huh? Well, I guess that’s fair.” Kibakura sighed, checking his status window.

Then he slowly stood up and looked around at the students. Standing there was the human Kibakura Reiji.

He was a mountain of a man with rugged features-exactly the “ideal man” archetype.

I felt a tiny pang of jealousy.

”Everyone… I caused a lot of trouble. I’m sorry.” Kibakura looked solemn as he gave a deep bow.

”Hey, Kibakura! You’re really back?!” The massive Moriya came charging over, looking like he was about to burst into tears, but Kibakura caught him by the face to keep him away.

Iwakura, the Magara brothers, and the rest of the Demiurge support team gathered around.

”Where are Fumioka and Shiraishi?” Kibakura asked.

”They’re with the subjugation squad. They should be close by.”

”Fine, later then. Listen up! Demiurge is officially disbanded!”

The room erupted into murmurs at the declaration.

 ”Kibakura!”

 ”Kibakura!”

”You guys, shut it.” Kibakura sat back down heavily and looked up at Amahara-senpai. “It’s exactly as you’ve heard, Amahara. I’m not about to tell you I think I lost to you, but the fact remains that I lost to myself. As the representative of Demiurge, I’m going to settle the score. You’re free to do whatever you want with me, but in exchange, I need you to give my former members a pass.”

”Kibakura!” Moriya started to protest, but Kibakura silenced him with a single, sharp glare.

Amahara-senpai took a slow step toward him.

”I understand. In that case, I’ll decide Kibakura-kun’s punishment right here,” Amahara-senpai declared, looking down at him. “First, Kibakura-kun is going to join the Student Freedom Alliance.”

 (What?)

”Huh? I’m not gonna complain, but what the hell is that supposed to mean?”

”I intend to encourage every single student at Seito Academy to join the Student Freedom Alliance,” Amahara-senpai continued. “Naturally, the Student Council and all our affiliates will be participating as well.”

 (Every student? Is Amahara-senpai serious?)

 ”Every student… Are you crazy?”

”The Alliance’s direction will be decided by a group of representatives. I want Kibakura-kun to be one of them.”

(Wait! No one told me about this!)

 ”Hey! You can’t be–“

”I might have sounded a bit high-and-mighty earlier, but as Kibakura-kun pointed out, I’m still lacking as a leader. I’m not yet prepared to shoulder everything alone-it’s embarrassing to admit. So, let’s decide things together. We’ll bring different perspectives to the table and talk it out. Kibakura-kun is qualified to be one of those voices.”

”Tch! You’re way too soft. That’s your problem, Amahara.”

”And one more thing. Kibakura-kun, you’re going to work for us.”

 ”Yeah? Let’s hear it.”

”With the dissolution of Demiurge, the Student Council will renounce all use of force. If a situation arises where the Academy requires muscle, we will delegate that authority entirely to the Student Freedom Alliance. Does that work for you, Higurashi-kun?”

Amahara-senpai turned toward Higurashi, who had moved closer to my side.

”Yeah,” Higurashi replied. “The Student Council will stay intact, and Amahara-senpai will serve as a representative. We’ll have the Council handle diplomacy as the Academy’s face, and they’ll manage internal affairs since they have the know-how.”

 ”Understood. I accept the role.”

(So they’ve already hammered this out with Higurashi? This is getting so big I feel like it has nothing to do with me anymore.)

”So, what’s my actual job then?”

”Giving up our use of force is fine, but it means the campus security we’ve been maintaining will fall by the wayside. Therefore, I’m creating a new Disciplinary Committee and appointing Kibakura-kun as the Disciplinary Chairman.”

 ”Disciplinary Chairman?!”

”Yes. It’s the perfect job for you, isn’t it? I assume you won’t say no?” Amahara-senpai gave him a thin, knowing smile.

”…Fine. I’ll take the gig. You’ve got a real nasty streak in you, don’t you?”

The students, who had been watching in stunned silence, finally erupted into a low roar of frantic whispers.

The secret was out-everyone knew Kibakura was the Beast now.

The entire power structure of the Academy was shifting before my eyes.

”Standby mode canceled!” a voice barked from Higurashi’s phone.

”Thanks. We don’t need the incantation anymore,” Higurashi answered.

She tapped her screen and held the phone to her mouth like a radio.

”This is First Platoon Leader Higurashi Asuka. As of this moment, the Beast has been suppressed. First and Second Platoons, along with the Subjugation Squad, begin withdrawal procedures immediately. All other students are to remain on standby and await instructions from Amahara-senpai. I repeat: this is Higurashi Asuka. The Beast has been suppressed–“

(Man, I’m wiped. I just want to sleep for two or three days.)
