Chapter 63 Repelling the Dragonewts

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Two days had passed since then. Exactly as Isaac had predicted, the dragonewts launched their assault.

We headed out to the border of our territory to provide them with a proper welcome.

Our group consisted of those who had been properly conditioned: all of my wives, along with Isaac, Keira, and Saria-eight of us in total.

However, I had the three Wing-kin acting as a separate scouting unit to check for any flanking maneuvers, so I arrived at the border with only my wives.

It was a surreal sight; the terrain was split cleanly between sand and fertile soil, as if a line had been drawn across the earth.

We set out a table and chairs, passing the time with snacks and idle chatter while we waited.

Before long, they appeared in the distance.

”Oh wow, there really are so few of them,” one of my wives remarked.

 ”Yeah,” I replied. “That’s barely a platoon-level force.”

Indeed, there were only about thirty of them.

It was a far smaller number than I’d expected.

Then again, if their entire population only numbered around a hundred and several dozen, I suppose this was the norm.

While I was reflecting on this, a dragonewt girl left her unit and walked toward us alone.

We stood up and stepped forward to meet her.

”Am I right to assume you are the human powerhouse who leads the Wing-kin?” the girl asked.

”Yeah, that’s right,” I said. “And am I right to assume you’ve come here to start a war?”

”Yes. We live by the laws of nature,” she replied.

”I will demonstrate our superior strength, and then you shall submit.” To emphasize her point, she slammed her mace into the ground as an intimidation tactic.

”In that case, if I’m the stronger one, does that mean you’ll bow your heads and follow me?”

”Of course. That is the law of nature,” she said. “Regardless of which side they are on, those who cannot accept that truth should simply fight to the death.”

 I see.

At least she wasn’t a hypocrite.

If that was the deal, this would be easy.

”Understood. Then come at me all at once. I’ll put you all through the wringer.”

”Are you… mocking me?” she asked. “You expect me to use ‘strength in numbers’ against a lone opponent?”

”Well, if you’d prefer to go one-on-one, that’s fine too…” I glanced back at Charlotte and the others.

They nodded and cleared the area, giving us space.

”Fine then. A duel it is.”

”How gallant. I like you,” she said with a smirk. “I think I’ll make you mine.”

She let out a laugh and charged, mace held high.

Without a hint of trickery, she closed the distance and swung the weapon down in a straightforward overhead strike.

I caught the mace with one hand, stopping it cold.

With a sharp twist, I wrenched it from her grip and stepped back to create some distance.

The dragonewt girl’s expression shifted to one of intense caution, but she immediately dropped into an unarmed fighting stance.

I ignored her, stowing her mace into Storage¹ and pulling out my giant hammer instead.

I slammed it into the earth with all my might.

 CRACK-BOOM!

The ground fractured, and a thunderous shockwave roared out like a cannon firing right next to your ear.

”So, which is it going to be?” I asked, projecting killing intent in every direction and unleashing enough Mana to make it clear that continuing would mean certain death.

 ”Submission or death? Choose.”

The girl, who had been knocked off her feet by the impact, didn’t even try to stand.

She immediately moved into a formal kneeling position and prostrated herself, forehead to the dirt.

”If the rest of you still intend to keep fighting,” I called out to her soldiers, “then come at me together. I’ll be your opponent.”

When I said that, they actually charged.

I met their rush with a series of palm strikes, sending the entire group rolling across the ground in an instant.

”Now then. This means you lot follow me now, right?”

The first girl nodded tremulously, but the ones groveling behind her didn’t seem convinced.

”D-Don’t screw with us!” one shouted.

”The idea of us dragonewts submitting to a mere human… it’s impossible!”

”Then you’ll fight until you die?” I asked.

”Of course!” he roared, bracing his weapon and rushing me.

”You idiot! Stop!” the girl shouted from her prostrate position, but it was too late.

 I swung the hammer down.

A heavy, wet impact sprayed fresh blood across the area.

”Well? If the rest of you still want to do this, come on,” I said. “You came here for a life-and-death struggle, didn’t you?”

At my words, several others let out primal shrieks and charged with their weapons ready.

I was about to intercept them when Shirley stepped forward and decapitated the entire group in a single, fluid motion.

”I wouldn’t have minded if you left it to me,” I said.

Shirley simply smiled and shook her head. “No, this is our job. However, I am relieved. I was worried that Ibuki-sama might forgive them even if it resulted in your own disadvantage.”

”Well, if it were just my own disadvantage, that might be one thing,” I said. “But I’m carrying a lot of responsibility now. I have no intention of forgiving those who try to kill my comrades.”

As I spoke, Yui-who had turned deathly pale-looked up with a startled expression.

”T-That’s right. If we don’t handle this properly here, the people back in town who can’t fight will be killed.”

”Yeah,” I agreed. “If they were opponents we could win over, I’d take another route. But it’s impossible when the enemy’s national policy is ‘kill and plunder.’”

Yui voiced her agreement, but her head remained bowed and her shoulders continued to tremble.

(This is probably the normal human reaction. I’m likely the strange one for being able to do this without a second thought as long as there’s a justification. I should probably keep Yui away from these kinds of scenes in the future.)

Despite my thoughts, Yui looked up, her face still pale but determined.

”I understand. Next time, I’ll do it too.”

”Mmm, this isn’t an emergency, so you can rely on us if you don’t want to,” I said. “It’s like choosing a profession; you should just do what you can within your limits.”

”No. I hate the idea of making the person I love shoulder everything alone. So, I’ll do it.”

It really isn’t that heavy of a burden for me, though.

Honestly, I feel like… what’s so wrong with killing people who came here to kill you? It’s no different from dealing with bandits; it’s just self-defense.

Charlotte and the others expressed their strong agreement with me, which helped Yui regain some of her composure.

That left the question of what to do with the girl still performing her prostration.

”By the way, what’s your name? And what’s your standing in the dragonewt nation?” I asked.

 ”Yashiro… I am the King.”

Wait, what? Then why did the soldiers charge on their own? It didn’t feel like they were trying to protect their King at all.

Is their discipline really that lax? If so, they’re basically just a mob of rioters…

Well, the threat level was low, so I guess it doesn’t matter.

”Can you return to your country and persuade them to stop this war?”

 ”I… I think I can… but, why…?”

She looked bewildered, as if she couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t simply annihilate or occupy them given my strength.

”Because it’s possible to live much more happily if we establish rules where we don’t rob each other-binding ourselves with law and affection for the sake of coexistence. You can at least understand the desire to be happy, right?”

Yashiro hesitated, seemingly unable to fully grasp the concept.

”But… we can’t go against the laws of nature… right?” she asked timidly.

”You’re just interpreting ‘the laws of nature’ too narrowly. For example, a food shortage like you have, or being unable to keep warm in the extreme cold-those lead directly to death, too. That environment is also part of the laws of nature. In a safe environment, the technology of agriculture and manufacturing becomes the superior force.”

Status changes based on the environment.

In a safe country like Japan, technical skill leads directly to a higher status than physical strength.

Of course, in this world, military power is necessary to guarantee safety, but there’s a balance; you need money to maintain an army, and you need technology to earn money.

Usually, things don’t get this lopsided.

”But if you have strength, you can just take what you want…” Yashiro argued. “Even among dragonewts, the weak are robbed. That’s why I fought so hard to become strong.”

”Sure, you can steal things, but if you don’t acquire the technology yourself, it’s only a one-time gain…”

 Ah… I see.

In a world where the power gap is this vast, the “violence of numbers” can’t easily overturn a single powerhouse.

Generally, people and wealth gravitate toward technology.

Even the strong want to live a comfortable life, so they’d naturally want to protect the source of that comfort.

But in a world like this, maybe it really just comes down to luck.

Even back on the other side, a country like Dole managed to stay in power.

Regardless, it was just a matter of the effort required to make this “common sense.” If you want a comfortable life, cooperation is the only path.

”Alright, alright. Look, you’re going to stay here for a while,” I said. “I’ll teach you that there are much better ways to live.”

I confiscated her equipment, cleaned up the battlefield, and we headed back to town.

When I reported the battle results to the worried citizens, the entire place erupted in celebration.

”It’s not completely over yet, so don’t let your guard down,” I cautioned.

”Leave the scouting to us,” said Isaac, and the others nodded firmly.

I told everyone to go about their business as usual for now and dismissed the crowd.

For the next few days, I focused on Yashiro’s “training.” My wives assisted, and since “Magical Thrust²” seemed to be effective even on Divine Beast-kin, it was a simple process.

Actually, I might have overdone it.

Yashiro had been dead serious about following the strong; she was submissive even before the training started.

But just to be safe, I kept her “pleasure-soaked” until she was genuinely willing to do anything I said.

Once she had become completely devoted and compliant, I prepared to send her back to her country.

Her mission: stop them from attacking us again.

”U-Um… I will definitely handle the negotiations, so please… give me the chance to see you again…” Yashiro pleaded, looking up at me from her knees with puppy-dog eyes.

”Hey, if you handle things properly over there, you’re welcome to come over and play whenever you want,” I replied.

”Y-Yes! Please leave it to me!”

And so, I saw her off as she began her journey back to the Dragonewt Village.
