Volume 9 Chapter 8 The Diabolical Little Devil

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Of course, hearing such things from Grete didn’t exactly put me in a bad mood.

I just couldn’t wrap my head around the reason.

We’d talk whenever we ran into each other, and I’d treat her to a meal or a drink now and then, but it wasn’t like I had been putting in the work to woo her.

I checked my ‘Sense Malice’¹… nothing. Not a flicker of ill intent.

”Grete, don’t you have a boyfriend?” I asked. “I mean, there are guys your own age in your party, right?”

Her party, the “Wyvern Slayers,” was a mixed bag.

The male members were Etogā, a cat-kin Beastman warrior, and Hans, a human Priest.

Etogā was a bit of a loose cannon, a kid who’d taken to calling me “Big Bro.”

As for Hans, my only real memory of him was the guy looking like he was about to drop dead from exhaustion when I rescued them.

Actually, it was Etogā who begged me to cover for Hans at that boys’ bar where I first met Nicola.

They all seemed to get along well enough, but I wondered what the internal dynamics really were.

Aside from Grete, the female members were Franziska, a leopard-kin swordsman with a reliable “big sister” vibe, and Irene, a bear-kin axe-wielder who rarely said a word.

”Hans is a sweetheart, but I don’t feel that spark with him,” Grete chirped. “Besides, he and Irene are already a thing. She’s incredibly possessive, so I’m not about to go poking that hornet’s nest.”

Now that she mentioned it, I did recall Irene always hovering near Hans, acting like his personal bodyguard.

 I hadn’t really noticed—or rather, I just hadn’t cared enough to look.

 ”What about Etogā?” I asked.

”Etogā? He’s a total brat,” said Grete. “He needs to mellow out before I’d even consider it. He hasn’t realized it yet, but I’m pretty sure he and Franziska are going to end up together anyway.”

 She had a point.

 Etogā was definitely immature.

Next to someone as composed as Franziska, his childishness stood out like a sore thumb.

”Fair enough,” I said, leaning back. “But… can you tell me why me? Why do you want to date me?”

 ”Honestly? I just think Daisuke-san is a catch! ♪”

 ”Really?”

I waited for a ping from my lie-detection Skills, but they stayed silent.

I found it hard to swallow, but it seemed she was being genuine.

 Had my ‘Ordeal’² vanished?

 No, impossible.

I used ‘Appraisal’³ on myself, and the curse was still there, plain as day.

”You look so confused,” she giggled.

”I mean, I’m happy to hear it,” I admitted. “But I have a specific Skill that makes it nearly impossible for people to like me. It makes me a little skeptical.”

”Is that so? Personally, I think you’re a total catch, Daisuke-san,” said Grete.

 ”A catch? Me?”

”Yep! I mean, you’re a B-Rank Adventurer and still so young. You aren’t reckless, so you’re not likely to go and get yourself killed early. You’ve got a calm temperament, you’re kind enough to bring back souvenirs and treat me to dinner… It’s probably because of that Skill of yours, but you’re a total hidden gem that no one else has scouted yet! ♪”

 ”I… suppose?” I replied.

Being showered with praise and a sparkling smile felt good, even if it felt like she was overselling me a bit.

Still, I couldn’t deny the logic.

Her affection wasn’t purely “true love”—it was pragmatic, almost transactional—but because she wasn’t hiding that fact, ‘Sense Malice’ remained quiet.

Or maybe the criteria for it reacting was based on whether I felt her intentions were malicious.

”I mean, you invited me to dinner, so you don’t exactly hate me, right?”

”Of course not,” I said. “You’re cute, Grete.”

 ”Thanks! ♪” replied Grete.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a bit of an interest in her, but I’d written it off as a pipe dream.

In my previous life, a girl like Grete would have been the center of attention anywhere she went.

High-energy, high-social-battery types like her usually had a trail of guys following them; I figured I’d just be another face in the crowd.

Still, I wasn’t sure if I should just dive in just because she was game.

I liked her, sure, but “love” was a stretch.

That was the downside of intentionally keeping my heart behind a wall.

”Thinking too hard? ♪” asked Grete.

”Well… it’s not that I’m against the idea, but this was so out of left field. I need a second to process everything,” I said.

”Ahaha! Don’t take it so seriously. We might not even click, so why not just do a trial run? ♪”

I knew I’d need time to actually fall for her.

But if I had that time… maybe it would work.

”Alright. Let’s get to know each other better on the understanding that we’re moving toward being a couple. I’ll let you know when I’ve got my head on straight,” I said.

”Yay! ♪ I hope that day comes soon! ♪” Grete replied.

For now, I’d put her in the “pending” file.

It wasn’t quite “dating with the intent to marry,” but more like “getting to know each other with the intent to date.”

I didn’t have a reason to say no, but the psychological hurdle of a full-blown relationship was still a bit high.

”If we’re going to do this, I have one condition…” I said.

 ”What is it?”

”I want you to hold off on dating other guys. And… anything beyond that,” I said.

I know, I know—coming from a guy with multiple lovers, I’m the last person who should be talking.

But I absolutely cannot stomach being cuckolded.

I didn’t feel the need to say that to Ines and the others, but my bond with Grete wasn’t there yet.

”Deal! ♪ I already knew you were a little possessive, Daisuke-san,” said Grete.

 ”You did?”

”I can tell just by watching how you treat your lovers! ♪ But in exchange, you’re going to protect me, right?”

 ”Naturally,”

”Mhm, mhm. I like that about you too! ♪”

That was a weight off my chest.

It felt a bit like I was just “keeping” her, but since I genuinely intended to make her my lover eventually, it shouldn’t be a problem.

 Probably.

Across the table, the conversation shifted as we finished our main course.

”I can’t say this too loud,” Grete whispered. “But the Lord of the town Daisuke-san went to? His reputation is absolute trash.”

”Oh? Is that so?” I replied.

During my expedition for that Designated Request, it turned out that the destination village—and most of the towns along the way—were territories of the Bloodline Faction.

I hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but looking back, I remembered Captain Emily insisting on holding our mock battle outside the town.

She’d said something about “having no obligation to show them our cards.”

The Bloodline Faction was notorious for pushing policies that stripped Commoners of any power.

Apparently, their courts were infamous for giving noble-born suspects a free pass on almost anything.

”Don’t the Inquisitors do anything about that kind of corruption?” I asked.

”Rumor has it there aren’t any Inquisitors out there,” Grete explained. “Corruption is a lot harder when they’re around, so the Faction makes sure to keep those seats empty.”

 ”Figures.”

An Inquisitor was an official who had specialized insight Skills; they acted as both prosecutor and judge.

I’d dealt with an Inquisitor named Haida back when I was getting Camilla away from Gerta, and their professional ethics were terrifyingly strict.

If they helped cover up a crime, they faced immediate ‘Divine Punishment’.

They literally couldn’t afford to be dirty.

So, if a Lord wanted to be corrupt without getting smote by the heavens, they just had to make sure an Inquisitor never set foot in their town.

”And to make it worse, some of them are human supremacists,” said Grete.

”In a country like this? Seriously?”

”Sadly, yeah. They pop up every now and then,” she replied.

Grete let out a sigh, and even that looked adorable.

Human supremacy was exactly what it sounded like: looking down on Beastmen, Elves, Dwarves, and anyone else who wasn’t human.

If it was just some random commoner, it wouldn’t matter, but it’s a nightmare when the nobility thinks like that.

Racial discrimination is technically illegal in the Maultasche Kingdom, but these guys are experts at using legal loopholes to push people out.

In countries where it isn’t illegal, they apparently raid villages and force people into penal servitude.

You’d think that would trigger ‘Divine Punishment’, but they’ve clearly found a way to dance around the requirements.

I’d have to look into that.

Not that I’d find much in a public library…

”Daisuke-san, you aren’t like that at all, are you?” asked Grete.

 ”Of course not,” I said.

”My lovers and Slaves are all gorgeous, and they’ve all got great hearts. I don’t see any reason to hate someone just because of their race.”

 ”That’s our Daisuke-san! So open-minded! ♪”

 ”I wouldn’t go that far,” I said.

Part of it was how beautiful my girls were, but honestly, I just had a lingering admiration for fantasy races from my old life.

Any guy from Japan would probably feel the same.

Still, dealing with nobles sounded like a headache.

Even if they weren’t all Bloodline Faction, I wanted to keep my distance.

But the higher my Rank got, the more the upper crust was going to take notice.

 I couldn’t stay a B-Rank forever.

I probably only had another year of this carefree life left.

”I’ll wait for you to sort out your feelings before we make the ‘lover’ thing official,” Grete said as the night wound down.

”But I do have one request.”

 ”What’s that?” I asked.

”Since we’re trying to get to know each other… won’t you have s*x with me, Daisuke-san?”

 ”Come again?” I blurted out.

What the hell was she suddenly saying?

That was the second bombshell of the night.

”Nicola told me all about it,” she teased.

 ”She said Daisuke-san is… incredible. It’s actually become a bit of a rumor! ♪”

 ”I… well, I guess so,” I stammered.

”I’ve always been curious, but I could never find the right person. I don’t have any experience yet.”

”Etogā and Hans aren’t really my type, and most other Adventurers are just… well, they’re savages,” said Grete.

”Can’t argue with that,” I replied.

Setting aside their Levels, a lot of the guys in this line of work were basically male versions of Gerta.

And besides, there’s no one in this world with a ‘Sexual Technique’ Skill higher than level 10.

In fact, a level 10 is almost mythical.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say my technique is literally the best in the world.

Not that I’d ever say that out loud.

I hadn’t told Vanessa or Gerta to keep our bedroom activities a secret.

It felt a bit weird to swear them to silence.

But if rumors were spreading, I was surprised I hadn’t been swamped by more women.

”Your Skill might play a part,” Grete explained.

”But the word on the street is that Daisuke-san is Gerta-san’s ‘man.’ Not many women are brave enough to try and poach from her! ♪”

”Oh? Is that what people think?” I asked.

Apparently, I was seen as Gerta’s lover—or her favorite toy.

Gerta was famous for her high Level and her terrifying face; the fact that I’d beaten her in a duel was common knowledge.

And people talk—they knew we’d gone to a short-stay inn together and were effectively “friends with benefits.”

Most people stayed away because they didn’t want to piss off Gerta.

If only they knew she was a total masochist the second we got under the sheets…

”You aren’t worried about Gerta?” I asked.

”Nope! It’s not like I’m trying to be her enemy! ♪” Grete replied.

The common sense in this world was so different from my previous life.

Back home, hitting on a guy who was already involved with someone else was a declaration of war.

Here? Between my situation with Rei and the fact that you see guys (and the occasional woman) with multiple partners everywhere, I’d started to get used to the local vibe.

But still… what was I supposed to do?

Normally, I’d just “devour” her like I did with Vanessa or Nicola, but the “not quite lovers” thing made it awkward.

If we were just going for a hookup, I wouldn’t hesitate, but this was different.

”Look, I want to get closer to you too,” I said.

”But to do that right away…”

”You don’t have to overthink it! But I guess it would be better if we were officially dating first,” said Grete.

”I’d appreciate that. Just give me a little time,” I said.

”Understood! ♪ It just shows how much you want to treasure me, so I can wait a bit.”

”But don’t keep me hanging forever, okay?” she added.

 ”Haha, I won’t,” I replied.

She looked a little disappointed, but she respected my boundaries.

That parting look she gave me, peering up through her lashes… it was pure, diabolical temptation.

”Oh, and Franziska is a virgin too, but she’s definitely interested,” Grete added with a wink.

”If you say the word, I’ll try inviting her! ♪”

”I… I think that would be pretty rough on Etogā…” I said, my voice trailing off.

 My face practically cramped up.

 This was the third bomb.

She’d just finished saying those two would probably end up together, and now she was offering to wingman for me?

 She’s a devil. A literal devil!
