Volume 2 Chapter 7 Magic School
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Guided by the dorm mother, Kunila-san¹, I watched as the door to my room was opened from the inside.
Standing there was Nico, currently in the middle of a glorious runaway-from-home stunt.
”You really…”
Before I could finish, she grabbed my arm and hauled me inside.
”Thank you for your hard work,” Nico said, poking only her head out the door to greet Kunila-san.
She leaned her back against the closed door and smirked.
”Surprised?”
I felt a flash of irritation at how relaxed she was being.
”Surprised? Everyone is worried sick. Your mother is so distraught she can’t even eat; she’s bedridden.”
”That’s a lie. That woman just wants to play the tragic heroine.”
Is that really how she sees her mother?
As someone who lost their mother at a young age, her reaction was beyond anything I could have imagined.
”Even so, go back home.”
”No.”
I had a feeling this was going to be a massive pain.
I knew Nico was rarely stubborn without a reason, but she was definitely headstrong.
”Fine. I’ll go with you, so just go back once.”
The words “just once” slipped out. I shouldn’t have said it.
Nico didn’t miss it for a second.
”Once… huh? So it’s okay if I come back here?”
This girl- she was always so sharp about things like this.
I had no choice but to try and smooth things over, insisting that no matter what her mother was like, she was undoubtedly worried.
Well, as long as I got her home, her parents would probably handle the rest, even if they had to use force.
”If Nico’s parents give their permission, that is.”
Nico simply backed down with a “Fine,” which actually made me a little uneasy.
”It’s fine if you come back, but what are you going to do then?”
”I’ll work in the laundry here while acting as your attendant. I’ll pay my own Poll Tax², so I won’t be a burden to Larry.”
Was she talking about the part-time job the dorm mother mentioned?
”Can you even do that?”
”Don’t underestimate me. I’ve been learning sewing, jewelry maintenance, and etiquette since I was little so I could become a lady’s maid.”
”Laundry is just washing clothes, though.”
”What are you talking about? You’re so clueless.”
Nico explained that it wasn’t just washing; it involved mending tears, fixing frayed edges, and even cleaning or repairing brooches, necklaces, and earrings.
It was skilled work, and Nico puffed out her chest, boasting that she had practiced all of it as Teressa’s maid.
Apparently, the previous worker at the school had quit a few months ago, and they had been looking for a successor ever since.
”But what will you do after I graduate?”
”What do you plan to do after you graduate and become a Mage³?”
I was at a loss when she threw that back at me.
I never expected to be forced into this school, and I had no idea what the recommender’s intentions were.
I couldn’t even predict my own future.
”I’ll work here and raise your Children.”
While I struggled for an answer, Nico dropped a bombshell, speaking as if it were a foregone conclusion that she’d be carrying my child.
It made it even harder to respond.
”I’m saying I’ll give birth to and raise your babies.”
I was completely overwhelmed. I couldn’t say a word.
”Good. Now, take off that filthy overcoat.”
I wanted to say it wasn’t “good,” but my mouth wouldn’t move.
The first room we entered was narrow, with a fixed window to let in light from the hallway, but it was night and the Magic lamps⁴ in the hall weren’t that bright.
I shed the overcoat everyone had been mocking, and Nico took it, hanging it in a dark corner of the room.
The next room was flooded with light from numerous Magic lamps. It was as large as the master bedroom of the Fee family⁵.
There was a single bed, a large table that could seat several people, and even a desk similar to the one my Sister-in-law used at the Village Head Tower⁶.
”Sit there. I’m going to wipe you down.”
Nico pointed to the bed.
”It’s fine. I’m exhausted, I’m dead on my feet. Just let me sleep.”
”No. Take off your shoes. I’m not having you in bed with feet that filthy. I’m the one who has to wash the sheets, remember?”
With Nico’s relentless nagging, I didn’t feel like I was in a school far from home at all.
It felt like I was back in my old life with the Fee family. I couldn’t resist; I just grumbled and obeyed.
As I was taking off my shoes, Nico returned, walking with a wide, hurried gait while clutching a small basin of water.
”Before I wash your feet, wash your own hands and face.”
As I followed her orders, she brought several towels from another room.
”What are you doing? Get down to your underwear.”
She started wiping down my head and neck with a wet towel, but eventually, she complained that I smelled.
She stripped me out of my underwear and gave me a full-body sponge bath while I was completely naked.
”You brought a change of underwear, right? Put it on yourself.”
As I stood there shivering from the cold, Nico left to dump the dirty water.
”Alright, I’m going to sleep.”
I said that to her as she returned, heading for the bed, but she stopped me again.
”Wait. I need to explain the room.”
I wanted to tell her it could wait until morning, but she’s always had an air about her that makes it impossible to say no.
”The room by the window over there is the washroom. The one in front of it is the toilet. I’m sure you’ve heard, but don’t use the public ones. It’s all girls here.”
I’d already heard that from the dorm mother.
”Next to that is the closet. The one closest to the hallway is the servant’s room. My things are in there, so don’t go in without asking.”
”Got it. Now please, let me sleep.”
”One more thing. I’m sleeping in that bed with you.”
”Huh?”
The bed… in this room?
If she was sleeping “too,” that meant… She said something incredible and then turned toward the washroom, carrying the dirty towels and underwear.
Was she serious?
Dazed, I sank onto the bed.
It wasn’t stuffed with straw; it was filled with something soft and fluffy.
The blanket wasn’t stiff or heavy. It was clean and smelled so fresh it was almost intoxicating.
Is it really okay for me to live like this?
I lay back without thinking.
Everything is such a pain.
Whatever. The moment I closed my eyes, my consciousness flickered out.
* * *
Due to extreme exhaustion, Larry entered Autism mode⁷.
The Parasite Host⁸ took over the body’s controls.
However, the physical fatigue remained, leaving the Host in a half-asleep state.
* * *
I’m so tired.
Am I back at Himeji Station⁹?
The train doors are standing wide open, and the wind is freezing.
Maybe I’ll grab some station soba¹⁰ before I head back.
I step off the Special Rapid¹¹ and onto the platform, walking toward the standing noodle shop past the stairs to the ticket gate.
On the opposite platform, the last train for Okayama is stopped.
I ignore the people rushing past at the station announcement and stand before the ticket machine.
Station soba with tempura.
Oh, even though it’s late, the inari sushi¹² isn’t sold out.
I press the button, pay with my ICOKA card¹³, and the “Sold Out” light flickers on.
”Lucky.”
Inside the shop, there are middle-aged guys and salarymen just as exhausted as I am, hunched over steaming bowls of soba.
I set my ticket on the counter. The lady puts down the last pack of inari, tears the stub, and starts warming the noodles in the vat.
They call it soba, but it’s more like yellow Chinese noodles in a Chinese-style broth. It’s practically ramen.
Suddenly, someone shoves me hard from behind.
What the hell? I could’ve dropped my bowl. I turn around, and everything is pitch black.
Where am I?
The futon feels like the ones back in Japan.
Was it a dream?
Dammit, I really wanted that inari.
Wait… Did I come back from being reincarnated?
Is my life in another world over? I roll over and realize someone is sleeping next to me.
As my eyes adjust to the dark, the silhouette of a face emerges.
It’s Teressa. She’s sleeping neatly on her back.
The reincarnation wasn’t over. Heh.
Since we’ve already crossed that line, a little mischief shouldn’t hurt, right?
I’m exhausted, but my body has that typical “tired-on.”
A surge of lust wakes me up.
I prop myself up, hovering over her. I lean in close and slide my left hand over her underwear to touch her breast.
Wait. Something’s wrong.
Teressa’s breasts are larger and softer, even when she’s lying on her back.
These are small. Firm.
I mean, they aren’t gone, they’re just small by comparison… what the hell am I making excuses for?
While I’m spiraling into confusion, the shadow with the petite breasts wraps its arms around me.
”I’m so happy.”
What? She presses her lips firmly against mine.
It’s Nico.
This is bad. This is very, very bad.
And yet, my left hand is acting on its own, rolling Nico’s n**ple between my fingers.
Larry’s memories are a jumbled mess of exhaustion.
She pulls me even closer, hugging me with everything she has.
What do I do?
The old saying about “not turning down a meal when it’s served” flashes through my mind, even as my reason screams at the top of its lungs.
”Take me.”
That tiny, fragile voice blew my sanity to pieces.
Nico’s grip loosened slightly, so I pulled back for a second before pressing my lips to hers again, tilting my head so our noses wouldn’t clash.
I let my tongue slide out, and she met it with her own. We tangled together.
The last of my restraint snapped. With our lips still locked, my hand moved instinctively to the buttons of her chemise.
I broke the kiss, breathless, and straddled her.
The body of a fifteen-year-old girl lay before me—a man with the body of a Child but the soul of a middle-aged lecher.
My type is usually “busty.”
I’m definitely not a lolicon, but it’s not like I’m repulsed, either.
I sat in the mount position, undoing my own buttons while looking down at her innocent form.
Nico turned her face away, blushing furiously.
Seriously, isn’t this crossing a line?
I couldn’t hear the warnings of my conscience anymore.
I buried my face in her unripe, pointed chest, latching onto the left one.
Nico was hesitant, but she slid her hands over my body as if confirming I was real, eventually reaching my crotch.
She was surprisingly bold, grabbing hold of me without a moment’s hesitation.
I thought she might have some experience, but it was tight. There was that unmistakable resistance.
Nico was a Virgin.
”Are you sure?”
I whispered the question. She just gave a small, tremulous nod.
I didn’t finish inside her, obviously, but I never imagined my first time with Nico would happen like this.
The moment “sage time” hit, the exhaustion came crashing back, and I fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
I woke up the next morning, still in control as the Parasite Host.
Larry was, strangely enough, still in Autism mode.
In this context, it meant he was shut off from the outside world—a state he entered of his own will, though I had no idea how long it would last.
When it finally broke, control would return to Larry, and my consciousness as the Host would go back to its slumber.
”I slept like a log.”
It had been a long time since I’d woken up in a decent bed.
I was sitting up and stretching when Nico walked in, carrying a tray.
”I brought breakfast.”
It smelled incredible. Is that stew? Not just soup?
”Please use the restroom over there,” Nico said.
I gave a quick nod and opened the door she pointed out.
As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a chair with a hole carved into it and a ceramic vessel tucked underneath.
Looking at it-for some reason-dragged me right back to the harsh reality of this world.
I pulled down my undergarments and sat.
Finally, the tension that had gripped me since morning began to drain away.
But as I sat there, letting out a long, weary sigh, the memories of last night suddenly came crashing back.
(Oh, crap.)
I felt like I was about to jump out of my skin.
This was bad.
This was really, really bad.
Why did I actually go through with it with Nico?
(Wait, wait, wait. Calm down. Thinking about it now won’t change a thing.)
Even in a world as free-spirited as this one, I couldn’t just shrug it off with a “Sorry, I didn’t finish inside, so it’s not my problem.”
That kind of excuse wouldn’t fly here.
Nico wasn’t some maid or a slave; she was a respectable, free citizen.
Plus, her parents lived right here in this city.
There was a high chance her parents would demand I take responsibility-as in, register our marriage.
Could a guy like Larry even support a wife right now?
Every path of my anxiety led back to that one question.
Still, no matter how much I racked my brain, I wasn’t going to find an answer sitting on a toilet.
My only real option was to get back to the village as soon as possible and talk things through with my Sister-in-law and Monica.
To do that, I needed to figure out exactly when I could leave.
First, I had to get a handle on the school curriculum.¹⁴
I needed to wrap up whatever business I could right now and make sure I didn’t stumble into any more trouble.
I decided to dig through Larry’s memories to see what I was dealing with.
I had an interview with the Director at nine this morning.
There was something about that that rubbed me the wrong way.
That “Coal Hag” I’d met in the carriage… I knew Larry had used Mana¹⁵ back then, so I had a decent idea of what happened.
She definitely acted the way she did because she realized Larry could manipulate Mana.
She was almost certainly involved with this school.
Then there was that rough-around-the-edges woman who’d punched me for turning the bituminous coal into ash.
There was a weird vibe in her conversation with the Hag; they definitely weren’t strangers.
Which meant she was involved here too.
I had a feeling I knew what they were after.
I’d have to make sure to confirm my suspicions during the interview.
Next on the list was Isabella, the leader of the Weasels of Bohemia mercenary band.
She was in the territorial capital-and apparently, she’d been commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Army.
I hadn’t confirmed it yet, but it sounded like she wasn’t stationed here.
As long as I stayed away from the city center for a while, I’d probably be fine, but I still needed to find out where she was posted.
As for the house, it would probably be okay as long as Niko, Teressa, and Monica were there.
I wiped myself with the leaves provided, girded my loins, and stood up.
When I stepped out, Nico was waiting for me.
She flashed a smile and handed me a freshly wrung towel.
(Is it just me, or is the service a little too good today?)
”Would it be alright if I joined you for breakfast?” asked Nico.
Her tone was strangely formal, which didn’t suit her at all.
I noticed two trays had already been set out facing each other on the table.
”Yeah, sure,” I replied.
”I’m so happy,” she chirped. “It’s been such a long time since Larry and I had breakfast together.”
On the trays sat white flour bread, a bowl of stew with sausages and a spoon, and a wooden dish of sauerkraut.
If I remembered correctly, tuition and dorm fees were waived at the Magic School, but you had to pay for your own food.
I couldn’t help but wonder how much a spread like this cost.
Well, I’d find out when I checked the curriculum.
”Nico, where exactly is your house?”
”It’s just down the hill from here.”
(I wonder if it’s near the guard post.)
If it was right down the hill, it shouldn’t be near the entertainment district.
That meant the chances of bumping into Isabella were slim.
I tore off a piece of the white bread and popped it in my mouth.
It was slightly sweet. It tasted a lot like a Japanese baguette-actually, it was delicious.
”This is great. We don’t get stuff like this in the village,” I said.
”Right? I feel like I’ll never be able to go back to regular bread after this.”
(Careful, Nico-san, if you keep talking like that, you really won’t be able to leave this place.)
Back home, even at the Village Head’s house, we only saw wheat bread a few times a month.
”Don’t worry,” she said, as if reading the concern on my face. “It’s only one silver coin for the both of us.”
In my head, I did the math.
One silver coin was roughly 1,000 yen.
Below that, a silver bit was 100 yen.
Above it, a gold bit was 10,000 yen, and a gold coin was 100,000.
The carriage ride between Obernbach and Besanburg-which included two meals-had cost one gold bit and two silver coins.
That worked out to about 12,000 yen.
Warm coal was five silver bits (500 yen).
A night with Emma-chan was two gold bits (20,000 yen).
If a meal this good for two people was only 1,000 yen, it was actually pretty reasonable.
The problem was, I wasn’t earning anything.
Even if it was “reasonable,” I’d starve to death if I couldn’t pay.
I still had the parting gift from my brother, so I wouldn’t go broke immediately, but I really needed to look into a part-time job like Nico had.
”Lunch is also one silver coin for two, but dinner will be one silver coin and four silver bits,” she added.
Since coming to this world, I’d mostly been eating two meals a day, so I hadn’t really thought about lunch.
Apparently, people at this school ate like they were back in Japan.
”So, that’s three silver coins and four silver bits a day for the two of us.”
I converted that to 3,400 yen in my head.
With twenty-eight days in a month, that was over 90,000 yen.
I wasn’t great at mental math, so that was just a ballpark figure.
Toss in miscellaneous expenses, and it would probably cost one gold coin a month.
Over thirteen months a year, I’d need twenty-six gold coins to graduate.
”It’s okay,” Nico whispered. “I’ll… take… care… of… you.”
(No, no, no.)
I couldn’t bring myself to say it out loud, but without any income of my own, I was dangerously close to sliding into being a total deadbeat.
”Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask… how did you manage to get in here as my attendant?”
”Well,” Nico giggled. “That dorm mother might look like she knows what she’s doing if she stays quiet, but she’s a total airhead.”
(Wow, you’re really just gonna say it, huh?)
”On that admission permit I saw at the Fee house, it had options for an ‘attendant,’ ‘bondservant,’ or even a ‘slave,’ right? I figured I’d take a gamble and told her I was Larry’s attendant. She just let me right in.”
(What kind of joke is the security at this place?)
”For my laundry job, the Principal came out and asked for my background, my parents’ address, and even Larry’s birthday.”
”But I didn’t tell a single lie-other than the part about having my parents’ permission-so everything was fine.”
I wanted to yell at the Principal to actually contact the parents, but in a world where a girl’s coming-of-age ceremony was at thirteen, I guess that was too much to ask for.
Just as we were finishing breakfast, a loud thumping came from the door.
Nico went to answer it with a confused look.
It was Ms. Kunila, the seemingly competent dorm mother, telling me to get to the Principal’s office immediately.
”Ms. Kunila, the appointment is at nine, right? You’re an hour early,” Nico said.
”O-oh, was that so?”
(The Principal must have her hands full with this one.)
Regardless, I got ready by putting on the best clothes Iffens-niisan used to wear back when he was one of the Children.¹⁶
”We should get your uniform measured and buy a robe today,” Nico said.
”You really shouldn’t be wearing that overcoat anymore.”
Nico was acting all demure and polite in front of the dorm mother.
During the walk, I managed to get a brief rundown of the curriculum and the holidays from our airhead guide.
There was a Mana ability test scheduled for this month.
That would determine my course, and I’d be assigned to a graduate student.
Well, my course was already set, so that didn’t really apply to me.
As for holidays, the school ran for three months with one month off, though some graduate students would expect you to help out even during the break.
”There are no classes in April, August, December, or the thirteenth month,” Ms. Kunila explained.
”But everyone stays in December for their advancement and graduation exams.”
Apparently, the thirteenth month was a chaotic time for switching between dorms.
”Also, there’s the Rookie Introduction on the 25th of this month, so please make sure to attend.”
”Oh yes, there’s also a traditional event on New Year’s Eve, so please attend that too!”
”Then the uniform definitely needs to be ready by then,” Nico noted.
”Oh dear, that is a problem. There are only three days left until the Rookie Introduction!”
”Don’t worry, I’ll handle it,” Nico said.
Ms. Kunila let out a sigh of relief.
It looked like she really leaned on Nico.
A short while later, I went to the Principal’s office with the dorm mother Ms. Kunila right on time.
The Magic School was laid out on a large square lot.
The east side held the student dorms, stables, and the main gate.
To the south was a symmetrical garden, a carriage rotary, and the administration building.
The west side held the graduate dorms and laboratories, while the north side was for the research building.
At the very center sat a dome for lectures and experiments, the library, and a classroom building that also held a shop, cafeteria, and laundry.
We walked from the dorm office through a covered walkway to the administration building.
It was a stunning stone structure that made heavy use of semi-circular arches-it was pure Romanesque architecture, to use Earth terms.
It was a Basilica-style layout with three aisles.
The central nave was a high-ceilinged hallway, while the northern aisles were divided into the Principal’s office, staff room, office, sewing room, and archives.
Incidentally, the southern aisle was an open-air corridor where carriages were parked.
The hallway was so grand that your voice would probably echo.
The dorm mother knocked on a massive set of doors.
”Enter,” a voice called out.
At the sound, she pushed the doors open.
The room was huge with high ceilings and a row of large windows on the far wall overlooking the courtyard.
In front of the windows sat a massive executive desk, and behind it was the familiar Coal Hag.
”It’s been a while, Larry Fee Getys.”
”I knew it,” I muttered. “The coal-selling lady was actually the Principal.”
”I apologize for the deception back then. Well, come in and sit down.”
She gestured toward a set of expensive-looking lounge chairs in front of her desk.
However, already sitting on the sofa-specifically in the lower seat-was a woman in a full-black Gothic Lolita outfit.
She was so still she almost blended into the room.
”Allow me to introduce you. This is Henrietta Schmidt.”
”She is the school’s only Synchronization-type¹⁷ graduate student and a Mage.”
”To put it simply, she’s a Golem¹⁸ researcher-and she’ll be in charge of you,” the Principal said.
”Nice to meet you… Hero-kun,” Henrietta whispered.

She was dressed entirely in black.
Her hair was adorned with a brimmed ornament like a small hat, and she wore a high, stiff collar that looked like it might actually be choking her.
Her skirt was long enough to hide her ankles, and she wore thick-soled Lolita shoes.
As she reached out a hand for a handshake, I noticed she was wearing patterned black gloves.
(Honestly, when you’re dealing with Mana users, a bare-handed handshake can lead to telepathy or mind-reading.)
The gloves were a relief; it meant I didn’t have to stay on high alert.
But man, she was well-endowed.
Her frame was slender like my Sister-in-law’s, but her chest was… well, it was as big as Lili’s back at the Getys house.
No, it was probably closer to Herta’s from the Fee family.
”Hero-kun? Is it?” I asked.
My eyes inadvertently drifted toward her chest, which looked like it was about to burst through the heavy embroidery of her dress.
”Yes,” Henrietta said with a smirk.
”Apparently, everyone on campus is calling you either ‘Hero-kun’ or ‘The Country Bumpkin’.”
I could only manage a wry, awkward smile at that.
”Henrietta,” the Principal chided. “He is an important guest recommended by both His Majesty and the Commander of the Golem Battalion. Don’t go making a toy out of him.”
(“Guest,” she’d said.)
It looked like they really did think I was just some kid an important person had recommended on a lark.
”Are you unhappy with the term ‘guest’?” the Principal asked. “From the school’s perspective, having a celebrity like you on the roster means donations go up and we can squeeze more money out of the Provincial and Central governments.
Calling you a ‘guest’ is just our way of showing we intend to treat you with care.”
So, I was a guest.
Despite being the Principal, the man was remarkably blunt.
”An important figure like you didn’t show up even though he was told to hurry, so I took a student who knew your face and went all the way to Obernbach.
When I found out there were no regular carriages to the village where our ‘guest’ was staying, I was looking for a charter when you showed up right on cue.”
Well, I suppose that’s fine then.
”That student who knows my face… by any chance, was it the person who was assisting the Medical Mage at the Linto base?”
”You’ve got a good memory. It’s Nikole Jahn-san,” the Principal replied.
”I don’t recall her name, but I heard she came to Linto because she was short on credits. Did she graduate?”
”No,” the Principal grunted. “Kiridal attacked Linto, so she tucked tail and ran home early.
She ended up failing the year because she didn’t have enough days on the clock.”
Poor girl.
”I had her go with me so I could observe your character,” the Principal said, his face hardening.
”You seem pretty inflexible, so let me tell you this now: Don’t cause trouble, and don’t be stubborn. Got it?”
The Principal spoke with a deadly serious look, and I couldn’t help but feel a massive “danger flag” had just been planted in the ground.
”As you probably know, this school is the bottom of the barrel.”
(Actually, that’s news to me…)
”Most of the students are Mana Handling Level 2¹⁹—hell, some are barely scraping the line between 1 and 2. Out of the five Magic Schools in this country, our Mana levels are rock bottom. We have high rates of failure and dropouts. Plus, we’ve got plenty of lowlifes who love picking fights with other schools.”
So, even this world has “F-rank” schools.
”The food was good, at least,” I said, trying to offer a single compliment.
”It has to be. If the food sucked, no one would ever come here.”
Apparently, running a school was a tough business.
”When I first took this job, the student body was a third male. Those guys were always brawling with other schools; the teachers were constantly being hauled down to the guardhouse to bail them out. So, I started bringing in more girls, but it turns out women cause their own brand of trouble. Right, Henrietta?”
The Goth-Loli girl he addressed simply stared off into space, acting as if she hadn’t heard a word.
”Women who can use Mana have… intense drives. It’s a mess. As you likely know, if you can handle Mana, you can control contraception and conception at will. So, I’m telling you: Do not sleep with the students.”
(Well, I already messed that up last night… but she wasn’t a Mana user, so maybe it doesn’t count?)
”Technically, the school rules forbid dating between students.”
(I’m sure that’s just a suggestion to them. They’re young, after all.)
”But too many of them see leaving home as an excuse to go wild. They’re too desperate to snag a man, and because of that, I ended up having to build a damn nursery school.”
Apparently, since land is scarce and there’s an “official” ban on dating, the nursery is being built right across from the main gate.
”Listen, I’ll say it one more time: Mana-using women are insatiable. And these students are young; they’re bottomless pits. They’ll try every trick in the book to get in your pants. Treat those advances like the voice of a demon. If you let your guard down, you’ll find yourself in a hellscape you can’t imagine. Think long and hard about that.”
(He’s right. My partner wasn’t a student, but I really wish I’d heard this speech before last night.)
”Look, you’re a man, so I know you can’t just stay celibate forever,” the Principal mused. “Maybe I should just make it so the only ones you’re allowed to sleep with are me—since I’m all dried up—or the dorm mother?”
”I’ll have to respectfully decline that,” I said.
”Then there’s—”
(Wait, wait! Why aren’t you and the airhead dorm mother off the table?!)
”There’s your attendant, Nico-san, right? She’s a beauty; you’d be fine with her. And… fine, I’ll permit Henrietta, since you’ll be doing research together.”
She was just making these decisions on the fly right in front of her. Was Henrietta-san even okay with this?
”Hero-kun, I want to discuss our plans moving forward, so make sure you come to the lab at least once this month,” Henrietta said.
Apparently, she was very okay with it.
”If you have s*x with anyone else, you must report it immediately. Men have lost their noble titles to the predatory nature of these girls before. We have to handle it before it turns into a disaster.”
I wasn’t sure if “Thank you” was the right response to that.
”I’ll say it again: Don’t pick fights with other schools. The paperwork is a nightmare.”
”What about the Military Academy?” I asked.
”They’re elite. They don’t even look at a place like this.”
I’d heard anyone could get in there, but the discipline was supposedly brutal.
”The real headaches come from the Ordinary Schools. They’re basically prep schools for government office jobs. Lots of children of vassals and second or third sons of nobles from other territories. In other words, a bunch of spoiled brats. You get the picture.”
He was basically saying that because their parents have power, cleaning up their messes is a pain.
”Then there’s the Agricultural School. They’ve got the Management track for the heirs of Village Chiefs, and the Colonization track for third sons looking to clear new land. You have to be a fairly wealthy Village Chief to even get in, so that place is also crawling with pampered kids.”
I see.
”Same goes for the Vocational Schools. Point is, stay away from other students as much as you can. Got it?”
Back in my previous life, I was at the bottom of the school social ladder.
I lived a quiet high school existence, so I figured his worries were misplaced.
”You’re famous, which means you’re a target for jealousy and resentment. Keep your head down.”
That seemed to be the core of the Principal’s warning.
As long as I was the one pulling the strings of this body—and not Larry—I figured we’d be fine.
When the meeting ended and I stepped out into the nave, which had an unnecessarily high ceiling, Nico-san was waiting for me.
After that talk with the Principal, her presence felt like a lifeline.
Following the dorm mother’s instructions, I went to the office next door to handle the paperwork.
One of the tasks was opening a school bank account.
While housing, tuition, and uniforms were free, I had to pay for my own food, laundry, and anything from the shop.
I had to keep a certain balance for automatic withdrawals at the end of the month.
On the bright side, pay from school-sanctioned part-time jobs would be deposited directly there.
”Occasionally, we get specific requests for private tutors,” the clerk explained.
”But most jobs involve charging Mana into Amber²⁰ or the primary creation of Mana Ink²¹.”
I didn’t know the first thing about Mana Ink, but I could handle charging Amber.
”What happens if I put in too much Mana and the Amber cracks?”
”For the small ones, you pay the replacement cost. The big ones have safety limiters.”
Nico-san told me she’d earn the money so I didn’t have to worry about it, but a man has his pride.
I decided to take a Giant Amber meant for Golems back to my room to charge.
According to the clerk, one charge was worth five coins.
Lugging that heavy, oversized Amber, I headed to the shop.
I used the parting gift from my brother to buy a brown robe—a dead ringer for a Jedi robe.
”Now you can walk around outside without looking like a total freak,” Nico said.
She said that, but the hood was so massive I felt like I looked even more suspicious.
Finally, I got measured for my uniform.
Nico-san took the bundle of fabric and decorations, and we stepped back out into the hallway.
”Hey there, sugar!”
A hand slapped my shoulder from behind.
In a split second, every pore on my body flew open and I broke into a cold sweat.
I turned around to find Marie, dressed in a school uniform.
She was the granddaughter of the Village Chief from the village where I’d been caught with Rudy back in Kiridal.
We’d had a physical relationship through “Night-visiting”²².
To make matters worse, her aunt was Isabella—the former leader of the ‘Weasels of Bohemia’ mercenary group and now a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Army.
”Ma… Marie? What are you doing here?”
”Surprised?” she asked, a huge grin plastered on her face.
She leaned in close—so close I thought she was going to kiss me right there.
”And just who might you be? An acquaintance of Larry’s?”
Nico-san suddenly wedged herself between us. What a badass.
”Who do you think—hmpf. Who are you, then?”
For a second, Marie’s Kiridal dialect²³ almost slipped out.
”I’m Larry’s attendant,” Nico said, jutting her chin out as she glared Marie down.
”Since when does an ‘attendant’ call their master by his name without a title? That’s… what do you think you’re doing?”
”We grew up in the same house. We’re basically siblings. Now, who the hell are you?”
Marie just let Nico’s intense stare slide off her.
She smirked and immediately lunged for my left arm, hugging it tight.
Her two friends stood behind her, squealing in shock.
”I’m Larry’s mistress, don’tcha know! gya”
Marie winced slightly as the Kiridal slang slipped out, but she stared Nico down with a look of pure triumph.
Beside her, Marie’s friends started giggling, which only poured gasoline on the fire of Nico’s hatred.
Nico’s face twisted into something terrifying.
”Larry. What. Is. This?”
Nico’s eyes were daggers. These two… their height was almost identical.
Their curves, their waists, their hips—if you saw them from behind, you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.
And to top it off, they both had the same streak of petty spite.
Like two identical magnetic poles, there was no way these two were ever going to be friends.
Nico grabbed my other arm, refusing to yield an inch to Marie.
”Knock it off! You’re just an attendant, stop acting like you’re his mother! It’s no use anyway—I’ve got Larry’s kid in my belly, I tell ya! deyo”
Marie made a shooing motion as if peeling Nico off me, her Kiridal dialect coming out in full force now.
It was the one thing I feared most in this world.
”Larry… what is she saying? Something about… your child?”
What do I do? I want to run away. I want to go back to the village right now.
