Volume 9 Chapter 12 Intrusion
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After waiting for a while, the matches finally begin.
The tournament starts with the Orc class of the Martial Arts division, followed by the Orc class of the Magic division, the Orc class of the Unrestricted division, and then moves into the Minotaur class for the Martial Arts division.
In the beginning, the levels of the contestants are low and there are very few evenly matched fights, but the crowd is absolutely losing it. Mai looks like she’s having a blast, too.
”Whoa! Now that was a solid finish!”
”You can say that again,” I replied.
Up until now, Mai has not really been doing any play-by-play. They’re using all four stages at once for the first and second rounds, so it’s probably hard to keep track. It’s fine by me, though-this is a date.
I didn’t catch them, but apparently the qualifiers were a massive fifty-person battle royale in a single zone. What is this, Smash Bros?
The matches themselves are actually pretty decent. To be honest, I’ve never seen a PvP fight between people in the same level bracket before. I’ve sparred with Gerta, Cassandra, and Captain Emily, but Gerta was the only one even close to my own level.
Back in Leemans, everyone except Kenta-kun was a total geek, so we spent our time obsessing over Ability scores¹ and Skill levels². We eventually settled on the logic that “Level is everything,” so we never bothered with actual duels. Sparring helps with Skill leveling, but nobody was really into the idea of fighting each other. There isn’t much to be gained from beating up your own friends, after all.
Even though I say the fights are interesting, my own Skill levels are maxed out in almost every martial discipline. I’m not seeing anything that makes me go, “I can’t believe they used that move!” From what I can see, there isn’t anyone here whose Ability scores would make me look like an underdog.
Mai, on the other hand, is completely hyped. “Ohh! They’re really going for it!” and “Mixing magic-type Skills into the combos is brilliant!” she cheered.
Since Mai is a War Saint³, her Magic aptitude is low, so I think things like Magic Fist would be too difficult for her. Then again, she has an overwhelming aptitude for brawling and the growth rate to back it up. Unless she’s fighting a ghost, she’ll be fine. She can leave the tricky stuff to someone else.
* * *
Gerta is tearing through the Dragon class. Gerta is around the mid-B-Rank, but the “Physical Attacks Only” restriction isn’t a handicap for her at all. Her abilities are a perfect match for those rules.
”Man, I’m so glad Gerta-dono that she is winning! Her fighting style just feels so satisfying!”
”It looks like she might actually make it to the top,” I said.
”I really hope she takes the whole thing.”
”Me too.”
Gerta probably owes her party members a fortune after chugging those Rejuvenation Potions without permission, so she needs a high-ranking finish to pay them back. Also, while the losers are just left where they fall, the winners apparently get their injuries healed before the next round. For a berserker like Gerta who prefers offense over defense, that’s a godsend.
”I’m usually the one on the front lines, so just sitting here makes my skin crawl…”
”Really?”
”Yes. Don’t you feel it, Daisuke-dono?”
”I think I’m happy just being a spectator,” I replied.
”Is that so? Just watching is stressing me out. Ugh! I want to fight right now!”
She might not be as bad as Gerta, but Mai is definitely a closet battle maniac. She’ll probably enter next year’s Martial Arts Tournament. If she keeps growing like this, depending on the bracket, she could legitimately aim for the Dragon class championship in the Martial Arts division.
As for other people I recognize-well, people I know of-Ursula is in the Martial Arts Dragon class and Rutger is in the Unrestricted Dragon class. Those two are A-Rank adventurers from the “Five Saints” party. Ursula has the alias “Great Shield,” and Rutger is known as “Flame Sword.”
Both of them are fighting exactly like the A-Rankers they are, breezing through their matches without a hint of trouble. If Gerta keeps winning, she’ll run into Ursula in the finals, but honestly, I don’t think she can win that one.
Ursula’s class is Shield Saint⁴; her defensive Ability scores grow like crazy, specifically her HP and VIT which have S-rank growth. Combined with her skill in Shield Mastery, it looks like she’s taking zero damage.
Her STR is also high with an A-rank growth, so she’d likely overpower Gerta in a raw trade. Judging by how easily she’s parrying, her Shield Mastery skill level has to be at least eight.
I took a long look at Rutger, since he has a much higher chance of causing trouble for me than Ursula. I’ve pegged his class as a Sword Saint⁵.
His STR and AGI are high, but his INT is nothing special. His “Flame Sword” gimmick seems to come from a magic sword rather than raw casting. Based on his class, his VIT and MND are relatively low, so if I actually land a hit, the damage should stick.
Ability scores change based on Class and Level, but Race matters too. Humans are the baseline for everything, but since Rutger is a Demon, his VIT multiplier is 0.8x while his INT is 1.2x. For most races, the average of the six Ability multipliers equals one.
Dragonewt⁶ are the exception; all their Ability scores are multiplied by 1.05x. That’s why they’re called the “Blessed Race.” But the Gray Dragonewts don’t count for that-they’re at a flat 1.0x just like humans. When Liese said they were “abandoned by the gods,” she wasn’t just talking about their Magic aptitude.
Now, comparing Ursula and Rutger’s Ability scores to mine, our averages are probably around the same. I’d guess their peak stats are somewhere between 4,500 and 5,000, and their lowest are in the low 2,000s. I’m sitting at a flat 3,400 across the board. Breaking through Ursula’s defense is still going to be a massive pain. Not that I’m planning to fight her. I’m not. Seriously.
In terms of pure Ability scores, Mai will be able to give them a run for their money by next year. Her Skill levels won’t catch up that fast, though.
* * *
Gerta kept winning, but she hit a wall in the semifinals. Her opponent seemed to have an Assassin-type class. His STR wasn’t much, but his evasion was top-tier and he was landing critical hits on her vitals one after another. It was a terrible matchup for Gerta since her defense is her weak point.
Still, she put up a hell of a fight for a mid-tier B-Rank. The opponent was some middle-aged adventurer (probably) around Level 50. He looked visibly disgusted by Gerta, who didn’t even flinch at the vital strikes and instead seemed to be enjoying the pain as she counterattacked.
”Ugh, what a bummer. I can’t believe Gerta-dono was knocked out here.”
”It was just a bad matchup,” I said.
”If I were fighting him, I’d use perception or detection Skills to make sure he couldn’t get a drop on me. If I could just force him into a slugfest, I’d have a real shot!”
Mai is breaking down the tactics with dead-serious eyes. When she gets focused like this, she actually looks pretty cool.
After the match, Gerta was a mess-just like that one duel-and she was carried off to the infirmary. She was still walking, but she was probably just riding a combat high, so it’s better to be safe. I left Mai to hold our seats and went to check on her, giving Gerta a potion to patch her up. It was one of the ones I’d bought at Aya’s shop that had just been sitting in my Item Box.
Since there’s no award ceremony for the top four, Gerta decided to come back and watch the rest with us. Luckily, the seat next to us was empty. If it hadn’t been, I might have ended up with Gerta sitting on my lap. (A bit of a missed opportunity, but I’m mostly just relieved I avoided the public embarrassment…)
”Gerta-dono, good work out there. That was close.”
”Tch. That bastard just kept running away. He won’t be so lucky next time.”
She’s already planning the rematch. What a battle maniac.
”I’ll kill that guy eventually, but Daisuke? I’ve given up on you. I don’t feel like I can ever win.”
”That’s because of the Blessings⁷.”
”Wait? Have you and Gerta-dono fought before, Daisuke-dono?”
”Uh, a few things happened and we ended up in a duel…”
”Oh! That incident!”
The word “duel” must have triggered the memory. I hadn’t told Mai directly, but I knew Yumiko-san had filled in the rest of the Yamato Nadeshiko Party.
”The way you treated Camilla-chan wasn’t exactly noble, but I’ll admit you were serious about the fight,” Mai whispered.
”Yeah. Gerta has reflected on that, too. She seems to be treating the new Porters properly now,” I whispered back.
Elisa, who took over for Camilla, is practically vibrating with energy, so she’s fine. (Honestly, she has too much energy.)
”Quiet, the finals are starting.”
”On it.”
”The top-tier showdown! I can’t wait!”
Mai doesn’t seem to hold a grudge against Gerta. Rin is probably still pissed, though. I’ll have to do some damage control the next time I see her.
* * *
In the end, the winner of the Martial Arts Dragon class was Ursula, and the Unrestricted winner was Rutger. Exactly as I expected.
”And now, a word from our Unrestricted Dragon class champion, Rutger-san!”
”What a bore. I’m surrounded by mediocrity. Sigh… Is there no one in this world capable of making me truly try?”
Rutger is a Demon with pale skin and white hair streaked with blue. He’d crushed every opponent, and he clearly wasn’t happy about it. Instead of a victory speech, he was putting on a theatrical performance, taunting the entire crowd. I doubt anyone would actually fall for it after seeing him fight. You’d have to be a total lunatic.
”I’ve heard enough…”
”Exactly.”
I forgot. I’m sitting between two total lunatics. I need to calm them down before this gets messy.
”Guys, stay cool. You saw him fight, right?”
”I did. He is a formidable foe. However…”
”That just makes him worth killing, doesn’t it?”
They’re gone. Their eyes are cold and focused. They took the bait, hook, line, and sinker. I thought Mai was the rational one, but apparently, a full day of spectating had pushed her stress levels past the breaking point.
”Cowards! If anyone here thinks they have the spine to face me, step forth! I shall personally show you the gap between us!”
”I’ll do it!”
”Count me in!”
”Wait! Hold on!”
Before I could grab them, they leaped onto the stage. The crowd went absolutely feral. If I tried to stop them now, I’d just look like a buzzkill and draw way too much attention. (I guess I just have to watch…)
”Hoh? Such spirit! I only need one of you to prove my point, but I shall show you both the meaning of despair! Come, Ursula!”
”…”
”Uh… is this allowed? It is? Alright then, let’s do this! An exhibition tag-match!”
Rutger could probably win solo, but it looks like we’re getting a 2v2. Ursula, as usual, just stands there in silence, not saying a word. This was definitely not on the schedule, but the organizers gave it the green light.
”To think we’d be fighting side-by-side before our actual duel… life is full of surprises,” Mai said while stretching.
”Yeah. But it’s a good surprise.”
”Hehe. I couldn’t agree more.”
They’re chatting casually while they warm up. (Wait, is that a psychological tactic to stay relaxed?)
”Ready when you are.”
”Hmph. Come at me with everything you have.”
”Here we go!”
The two B-Rank vanguards vanished with a Flash Move⁸, initiating a violent collision. Mai went for Ursula, while Gerta took on Rutger. No rules were set, but I’m assuming Magic is on the table.
”Hah!”
”…”
Mai used her superior AGI to flicker around Ursula, trying to find an opening, but Ursula didn’t budge. Mai was fast enough to hit her blind spots, but no matter where the strike came from, that shield was already there. Between the stat gap and Ursula’s Level 8 Shield Mastery, Mai couldn’t even leave a dent.
”What’s the matter? Was all that bravado just for show?”
”I’m just getting started!”
On the other side, Rutger was overwhelming Gerta. It made sense given the stats. As a Sword Saint with massive STR, he was a monster even without using his Magic. Gerta was talking tough, but she didn’t have a prayer.
”I admire your grit, but you’re still a child.”
”Gah!”
”This is the end.”
”Guh…!”
Rutger’s counter-offensive sent Gerta flying. He followed up with another Flash Move, and Gerta went down hard. She tried to push herself up, but her body was too broken from the accumulated damage. Mai fared no better. Despite her fierce assault, she caught a brutal counter-blow and was laid out. A War Saint isn’t squishy, but she just couldn’t tank a hit from a high-level Shield Saint.
”That defense of yours is as ridiculous as ever,” Rutger spat.
”…You could do it too… if you actually practiced.”
”Hah! You think I’d subject myself to the same insane training as a freak like you?”
Even Rutger thinks Ursula’s defense is supernatural. He calls her a “freak,” and he’s not wrong about her Skill levels. Just how much did she have to bleed to get that strong? (What is it that drives her?)
”Rutger-san, Ursula-san, thank you for that incredible exhibition! How was it?”
”They had some backbone. It was… adequate entertainment.”
”And you, Ursula-san?”
”…”
”U-Ursula-san? Just a word for the fans?”
”You won, too. Say something, for goodness’ sake,” Rutger groaned.
”…I’m hungry.”
”Uh… right! That was Rutger-san, our Unrestricted Champion, and Ursula-san, our Martial Arts Champion! Let’s hear it for them!”
Man, Ursula really is a woman of few words. Getting the secret of the Class Change out of her is going to be a nightmare.
