Chapter 120 Attacking the Barrier

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”I wouldn’t recommend it.”

Amano Yuuma said, her brow furrowed in deep concentration.

”If we fail, we might just end up making a bad situation even worse.”

Aki flopped onto the ground, his arms and legs spread out like a starfish.

”Maybe, but we can’t just sit here and rot forever.”

Mittelt chimed in with a half-hearted suggestion.

”What if we try digging our way out?”

”Great idea. You do the digging, and we’ll do the supervising.”

 ”Wait, what? Just me?”

The Fallen Angel maid looked at him with pure betrayal in her eyes.

”Wouldn’t it be way faster if we all pitched in together?”

”As a maid, isn’t this exactly the kind of thing you should be doing for your Master?”

After teasing her, Aki turned his gaze toward the sky-a vast, mocking expanse of cloudless blue.

”Forget digging. I say we just level the place. A massive, high-output attack might be enough to shatter the logic of this space.”

”But if we provoke the barrier, it might actually start fighting back…”

With no consensus in sight, the four of them spent the next few hours debating in circles, staying exactly where they were.

It wasn’t until Kalawarner began to sway, her face turning a ghostly, sickly pale, that the trio finally realized just how long they had been trapped in this stasis.

 ”We have to move. Now.”

Aki said, his tone shifting as he supported the tall, curvaceous body of the blue-haired woman.

”The three of us are A-rank¹. As long as we have Mana², our bodies will keep running on autopilot. But Kalawarner isn’t there yet. She’s hitting a wall.”

 ”Vana…”

Mittelt looked at her friend, her voice trembling.

”This is all my fault. If I hadn’t-“

Aki cut her off with a sharp glare.

”Drop it. If you’ve got breath to waste on a sob story, use it to dig that hole. At least then you’d be doing something useful.”

The heavy, melodramatic atmosphere popped like a bubble.

Mittelt bristled, ready to snap back at him, but one look at the fragile, weakened Kalawarner in Aki’s arms took the fight right out of her.

”Fine! I get it! I’m going!”

With a shout of pure frustration, the young maid scrambled to a nearby patch of dirt and began a frenzied, magical assault on the ground.

 ”Yuuma, try hitting the perimeter.”

 Aki looked toward Amano Yuuma.

”I can’t see it or sense it, but the edge should be roughly three hundred meters out. If precision doesn’t work, we’ll have to go for a wide-area saturation bombardment.”

 ”Understood.”

With a rustle of feathers, Amano Yuuma’s black wings erupted from her back.

In a flicker of shadows, the innocent schoolgirl vanished, replaced by a lethal Fallen Angel clad in provocative black leather.

She stopped worrying about chain reactions.

She could afford to wait out a siege, but Kalawarner was running out of time.

While Amano Yuuma and Mittelt threw everything they had at the barrier, Kalawarner leaned into Aki, her head low.

 ”Uesugi… I’m just a burden to you all. It’s because I’m too weak…”

 Aki sighed internally.

(Really? I just chewed out Mittelt so I wouldn’t have to deal with this from you.)

”Just be quiet. If we’re handing out blame, you’re at the bottom of the list.”

Aki wasn’t usually the caring big brother type, but seeing Kalawarner on the verge of a hunger-induced blackout, he decided to play the part.

”Look, if Lute hadn’t been wandering around like a tourist, we wouldn’t be stuck. If Yuuma hadn’t dragged you along, you wouldn’t be stuck. And if I hadn’t found this place to begin with, none of us would be stuck.”

When it came to his specific brand of circular logic, Aki was a pro.

He masterfully reframed the situation, leaving the blue-haired woman too dazed to continue her self-pity.

He softened his voice as he looked at her.

”Just rest for now. I’m going to need you at full strength once we find a gap.”

Kalawarner didn’t see how her meager strength would help, but she nodded anyway, closing her eyes as she drifted into a light nap.

Aki laid her down gently on a clean patch of grass and prepared to join the fray.

He walked to the edge of the pit Mittelt had excavated-now nearly fifteen meters deep.

The girl was a whirlwind of dirt and black-and-white fabric, her maid uniform caked in grime, but she didn’t slow down for a second.

Digging three hundred meters wasn’t just a physical chore; the deeper she went, the more the very laws of the world seemed to resist her.

”Keep it up, Lute! You’re doing great!”

Aki tossed a sarcastic bit of encouragement to the soot-stained girl before turning back to Amano Yuuma.

He still put his money on total annihilation over manual labor.

 ”Yuuma, any progress?”

Amano Yuuma let the black magic circle³ in her palm dissipate, shaking her head.

”Nothing. The moment an attack crosses the threshold, it just… vanishes. Same result for the sky and the bedrock.”

”I see. Then we really do have to break the world itself.”

While Aki’s raw talent for magic was nothing special, his Dual Cultivation had granted him access to a few high-tier, wide-range spells that punched far above his weight class.

He took his position alongside Amano Yuuma, making sure they were far enough from the center to avoid catching Mittelt or Kalawarner in the crossfire.

”Ye restless dust, ye straying souls, the earth’s deep bellow, the heavens’ toll!”

”Shadows born of malice, chaos unmade, wild darkness that shall not fade!”

As Aki’s rhythmic chanting echoed through the clearing, arcs of violet lightning began to dance and crackle in the air around them.

As the magic circle neared completion, his eyes snapped open.

”Strike! By the authority of the Heavens, I summon thee! Lightning of Extinction!”

 BOOM!!!

Massive pillars of lightning, fueled by Aki’s surging Mana, tore through the sky and slammed into the earth.

Soil and stone erupted into the air, ancient trees were snapped like toothpicks, and the ground was riddled with scorched, smoking craters.

Aki poured every drop of Mana into the output, systematically glassing the strange landscape.

Beside him, Amano Yuuma let loose her own incantation-a high-order Light spell.

While it lacked the raw, jagged violence of the lightning, its searing radiance melted everything it touched.

Together, they tore the environment apart.

Within minutes, nearly a third of the pocket dimension had been reduced to a scarred wasteland.

 Then, it happened.

Aki and Amano Yuuma’s vision blurred for a fraction of a second-a sickening, reality-warping shudder.

When their eyes cleared, the forest was back.

The trees were standing. The scorched earth was lush and green once more.

If it weren’t for the fact that the magic circle was still spinning and his hands were still glowing with power, Aki would have questioned his own sanity.

He cut the Mana supply, watching as the magic circle dissolved into harmless sparks.

Aki wiped sweat from his brow and met Amano Yuuma in the middle of the new clearing.

 ”Okay. This is a problem.”

”I’ve never seen a barrier like this.”

Amano Yuuma said, her usual composure cracking.

”It’s not attacking us, but it has a perfect auto-restore function. Is someone outside manually resetting the clock?”

 ”No way.”

Aki immediately shot that theory down.

”If someone were manually maintaining this, their power level would be astronomical. To even cast a barrier of this scale, you’d need to be a peak A-rank. To give it this kind of conceptual reset logic? You’re looking at an S-rank Mage or higher.”

Amano Yuuma thought for a moment and nodded.

”True. And if they were that strong, why bother trapping us? They could just wipe us out.”

As they racked their brains, Mittelt flew up from her hole, looking absolutely crushed.

 ”Lady Raynare…”

 She whimpered, her lip trembling.

”The hole… it’s gone. It just filled itself back in.”

Aki and Amano Yuuma exchanged a grim look.

It wasn’t just the surface damage.

Once the destruction hit a certain threshold, the entire interior of the barrier underwent a total chronological or structural reset.

Seeing the little maid on the verge of a breakdown, they both instinctively moved to distract her.

 ”It’s okay.”

 Amano Yuuma comforted her.

”Let it restore. At least you weren’t caught in the middle of the collapse.”

 ”I guess…”

 Mittelt sniffled.

”But it was weird. When the hole vanished, I was just… suddenly back on the surface. I hadn’t even hit the three-hundred-meter mark yet.”

 ”That settles it then.”

Aki said, jumping on the opportunity to pivot.

”The vertical distance is probably looped too. Digging is a dead end.”

 Mittelt looked up, confused.

”Is that how it is? Then I don’t have to dig anymore?”

”Exactly. Definitely. One hundred percent. No more digging.”

After that triple-affirmation, Aki immediately changed the subject.

”Since we can’t brute-force our way out yet, I’m going to focus on helping Vana Break Through to A-rank. Once she’s ascended, we can play the long game and wait for rescue.”

Aki had no idea how much time was passing in the outside world, but he knew one thing: if he stayed missing, Rias would find a way to look for him.

Given time, she would find this place, likely with Koneko and the rest of the peerage in tow.

Aki didn’t believe for a second that this barrier could contain a powerhouse like Rias.

The barrier could restore itself, sure-but what if the entire region was erased from existence in a single heartbeat?

 That was Rias’s specialty.

In terms of destruction, she was the best.

Mana infused with the Power of Destruction would make quick work of this place.

Even if Rias hit a wall, her disappearance would trigger the Gremory Family’s heavy hitters.

If the next head of the family went missing, her brother-one of the current Demon Kings-would likely step in and level the mountain.

 —

 Summary:

Aki and his Fallen Angel companions attempt to breach a mysterious barrier through excavation and massive magical bombardment. The group discovers that the pocket dimension possesses a perfect auto-restoration mechanic that triggers upon reaching a threshold of damage. Kalawarner’s physical weakness becomes the primary catalyst for a shift in strategy toward internal cultivation and awaiting outside intervention

 —

 Trivia:

 - Aki’s Mana capacity is significantly boosted by his Dual Cultivation ability despite average natural talent

 - The spatial loop extends vertically, preventing bypass via digging

 - Rias Gremory’s Power of Destruction is considered a conceptual counter to the barrier’s restoratio

 —

 Character Insight:

Aki demonstrates a calculated use of psychological manipulation (sophistry) to stabilize Kalawarner’s emotional state, showing a shift from casual master to tactical leader.
