Volume 10 Chapter 10 Repayment

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Fortune and misfortune are like two strands of a twisted rope.

My life has been a continuous repetition of that cycle.

The first misfortune was becoming an orphan.

The reason remains unknown, but I was told I had been abandoned at an orphanage.

Because of that, I do not even know what my parents looked like.

The first piece of good fortune was being taken in by that orphanage.

I cannot help but consider it a blessing that a helpless infant managed to survive instead of dying.

That outcome was also heavily connected to the fact that the director was a person of truly noble character.

The very first memory I can recall is the face of that orphanage director.

He was already well advanced in years at that point, but he was an incredibly kind man.

”Dietlinde, live your life earnestly and uprightly. The gods are always watching you.”

 ”Yes, Director.”

Perhaps because it was an orphanage affiliated with the Temple, the director always made a habit of expressing his gratitude to the gods.

The director was a gentle soul, but it was impossible for him to stay by my side at all times.

Since there were so many orphans, our relationship was inherently different from that of a normal parent and child.

When I was small, I yearned to be an ordinary child who could monopolize a parent’s affection, but as I grew older, I learned not to ask for too much.

Looking back on it now, life at the orphanage was really not that bad.

The portions of our meals were never quite satisfying, and the taste left much to be desired, but we were simply grateful to have food to eat.

Our clothes were completely ragged, yet they served their purpose to cover us.

Above all, a room that shielded us from the wind and the rain was something to be profoundly thankful for.

For orphans like us, there was absolutely no way to secure such necessities through our own strength.

The best thing about my life in the orphanage was getting to meet my friends.

Perhaps due to the local nature of a town built around a Dungeon, it felt like many of the children were the offspring of Adventurers.

Consequently, a significant number of them possessed combat-type Classes.

There were energetic children, bright children, strong-willed children, and timid children.

I surrounded myself with all sorts of friends.

They often told me, “Dietlinde, your version of ‘normal’ is incredibly easy for people to misunderstand, so you need to be careful,” but back then, I had absolutely no idea what they meant.

Even now, I cannot truly say that I fully comprehend it.

One cannot remain in the orphanage forever.

The vast majority of the children are forced to strike out on their own the moment they turn twelve years old.

On rare occasions, an orphan might be adopted by a noble or a prominent merchant family, but such instances are truly exceptional.

The ordinary orphans who possessed neither striking beauty nor extraordinary ability had to acquire the skills to survive while still within the orphanage walls.

The orphans with combat-type Classes polished their strength for battle, while the non-combat orphans honed practical abilities that could secure them employment.

Since I belonged to the latter group, I focused on document creation Skills and administrative work alongside the mandatory lessons in reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Our instructors were volunteer Senpai who had graduated from the very same orphanage.

For those with combat-type Classes, it was customary to become either an Adventurer or a guard.

However, securing a position as a guard was a notoriously narrow gate, so the overwhelming majority became Adventurers.

If you can manage to climb the ranks to B-Rank, you can secure a wealthy lifestyle, and if you reach A-Rank, you are treated as a quasi-noble.

If everything goes perfectly, even an orphan can become a highly successful person, but it remains an exceedingly perilous path.

In reality, among the friends who registered as Adventurers while dreaming of striking it rich, half of them are already dead.

Even so, because they have no other viable way to earn a living, they have no choice but to keep fighting from this point forward.

* * *

Fortunately, I managed to secure employment at the Adventurer’s Guild.

I was only twelve years old at the time, so naturally, I started out as a mere apprentice.

Though I was assigned to the Quest Mediation Department just as I am today, my very first Department Head was Roswitha-san.

She is our current Guild Master.

She trained me with immense strictness, but she never once discriminated against me for being an orphan, and I will always be grateful to her for guiding my deeply immature self.

After a single year, she was transferred to a different post, and the next Department Head who replaced her was a man whose discriminatory words and behavior were incredibly blatant.

He came from a wealthy family where his parents were high-ranking Adventurers, and he reportedly kept multiple Slaves under his command.

Operating under the twisted logic that “people only become orphans because their parents were weak,” he looked down on us with absolute contempt.

Because of his prejudice, I was barred from becoming a regular employee even after I passed the age of fifteen, which was the customary milestone to transition from an apprentice, leaving me to scrape by in a miserable existence.

The Department Head who succeeded him was a person who simply did not fuss over minor details, and I was smoothly promoted to a regular staff member without any issues.

He did not particularly show any favoritism toward orphans; it seemed he was merely following established protocol.

Even so, it was an undeniable fact that my income increased and a bit of breathing room returned to my daily life.

With my Skills growing steadily as well, that period became a relatively fulfilling time for me.

Once I had some leeway to spare, I began frequently visiting the orphanage again, only this time I stood on the side of the one providing instruction.

I continue this practice to this very day.

I only hope that I am managing to do as well as the Senpai who once touched me.

Two years ago, the Department Head was changed yet again, bringing in the current—or rather, the previous Department Head.

I was thoroughly shocked from the moment he delivered his very first greeting.

”I, who draw noble blood connected directly to the aristocracy and graduated from the prestigious Royal Academy, have condescended to employ you wretched, incompetent fools. You will show me proper gratitude.”

I had encountered proud nobles, quasi-nobles, and Commoners who possessed family names before, but I had never experienced anyone quite this atrocious.

As might be expected, the rest of the staff members were completely paralyzed, rendered entirely speechless by sheer shock.

His vanity was exceptionally high, and he viewed any fellow Commoner who had not graduated from the Academy as an inferior being.

However, because he was completely subservient to those above him, he managed to ingratiate himself thoroughly with the previous Guild Master.

He showered preferential treatment upon anyone he could flatter, while remaining utterly cold and indifferent to those he could not.

The two of them possessed remarkably similar personalities.

Though I suppose the previous Guild Master was slightly more adept, if only because he knew how to maintain a polite veneer on the surface.

On his very first day on the job, that man called me into his private office.

I remember wondering what the topic could possibly be, as I had absolutely no recollection of committing any blunders.

”Excuse me, sir. Do you have some business with me?”

”Ah, you’ve arrived. I hear you are an orphan. Your name is… well, whatever, it doesn’t matter. I have decided to make you my mistress.”

Even when addressing a direct subordinate, those are simply not words one utters to a member of the opposite s*x upon a first meeting without even knowing her name.

Even I, completely clueless as I am regarding matters of romance, could understand that much.

If he were a high-ranking noble, perhaps that sort of dynamic might be tolerated under the guise of “love at first sight,” but he was a mere Commoner.

It was entirely transparent that he was not seeking a genuine mistress, but rather a convenient outlet for his base physical desires.

I suppose he figured that since I was an orphan, there would be no messy complications or family backlash whenever he decided to throw me away.

It was clear that he did not view orphans as fellow Commoners at all; to him, we were nothing more than objects of utter derision.

Though I was deeply startled, I knew I had to deliver an immediate response.

Remaining silent could easily be misinterpreted as a sign of compliance.

”One must always obey operational mandates, but if a demand falls outside your professional duties, you are entirely within your rights to reject it.”

That was the invaluable lesson Roswitha-san had hammered into me.

 ”I must respectfully decline.”

 ”…What?”

 ”I must respectfully decline.”

”…Hmph, fine. There are more than enough replacement women out there. But you clearly fail to grasp your own position—”

”Is that the extent of our business? If you will excuse me,” Dietlinde said.

”Ah—hey! You… for daring to reject an invitation from someone like me, I will make absolutely sure you live to regret this…!”

Looking back on it now, even if I was intent on refusing him, I realize there might have been a slightly more diplomatic way to phrase my rejection.

I only came to realize that truth after I got to know Daisuke-san.

Unfortunately, by the time I recognized my tactical error, the damage had already been done.

From that day forward, a relentless campaign of petty, and at times incredibly intense, harassment began.

He would deliberately withhold my paperwork, completely ignore my presence, or simply scream at me in front of everyone.

I was particularly tormented by his booming voice when it was laced with actual Intimidation Skills.

My lungs would constrict, making it difficult to breathe, and my entire body would lock up, unable to move.

In that paralyzed state, mounting any sort of counterargument was completely out of the question, and my documents were routinely shoved back into my face for entirely unreasonable reasons.

I kept telling myself that if I could just endure it for a little while, he would eventually tire of it and stop, but he possessed an exceptionally vindictive nature.

His treatment of me remained completely unchanged as the days blended together, leaving me to spend every waking moment just trying to safely navigate my way through his daily malice.

* * *

That summer, something rather unusual occurred.

A large number of Transferees, including Daisuke-san and his companions, registered at our branch all at once.

While a high volume of simultaneous registrations is not entirely unheard of, the fact that almost all of them possessed distinct black hair and dark eyes made them stand out significantly, and the terrifying speed at which they grew became the immediate center of attention.

However, because the notorious antics and catastrophic blunders of past Transferees were common knowledge among the staff, most people preferred to observe them cautiously from a safe distance.

By pure coincidence, I was assigned to handle the registration paperwork for Daisuke-san’s party, the “Leemans,” and for reasons I still do not entirely understand, I wound up acting as their dedicated Guild Clerk from that moment onward.

The vast majority of my interactions were with Daisuke-san as the party leader, though I occasionally spoke with Kenta-san as well.

Those two always maintained a perfectly normal, respectful attitude, but I vividly remember how the other three members completely lost their minds with excitement at the beginning, seemingly because they found the existence of a Beastman to be incredibly rare.

”Whoaaa! It’s a gorgeous sheep-girl big sister, yo! She’s so freaking fluffy, man!”

”This is exactly what I expected from another world! Actual Beastmen just walking around casually like it’s no big deal!”

”By all means, I beg of you, please look at me and say ‘baa~’-degozaru.”

”Hey, knock it off, you guys are going to get us chewed out!”

”Come on, everyone, you’re being incredibly rude to her.”

While Daisuke-san could only flash a strained, helpless smile, Kenta-san actively moved to physically restrain the chaotic trio.

Setting aside the whole issue of my Beastman heritage, I had routinely dealt with far rowdier Adventurers who caused much worse scenes, so I simply offered them what I considered to be my standard, professional response.

”May I ask why you wish for me to do that?”

 ”Eh?”

”I am indeed a sheep-type Beastman, but I am a human being, not a literal sheep. Consequently, I do not make vocalizations like an animal. Is there any further legitimate business we need to conduct?”

 ”Ah… no, ma’am…”

”I am so incredibly sorry. My friends here are absolute morons. They really didn’t mean any harm by it, so please find it in your heart to forgive them,” Daisuke-san said.

”Is that so? Yes, I don’t particularly mind.”

”Oof… somehow, that completely detached response hurts way worse… Man, I desperately need some pure loli energy to heal my broken soul right now…”

”For real… dynamic characters are fine and all, but at the end of the day, 2D anime girls are the absolute superior choice, yo…”

”The only entity capable of truly accepting a servant such as myself would be a textbook yanderes…-degozaru.”

”Ahaha… Come on, guys, let’s keep our chins up and show some energy…”

Even though I had explicitly told them that I wasn’t offended, I completely failed to comprehend why the three of them sank even deeper into a state of profound, utterly miserable dejection.

To be perfectly honest, I still do not understand the reasoning behind their reaction even now…

* * *

During the year that followed Daisuke-san and his party’s registration, watching them climb through the ranks at a completely unprecedented, unbelievable velocity gradually transformed into one of my greatest personal pleasures.

At the very beginning, they struck me as entirely too flighty and perpetually hovering on the edge of extreme danger, but they steadily leveled out, transforming into battle-hardened veterans of many campaigns.

I also began running into Daisuke-san outside the walls of the Guild, and bit by bit, we started engaging in casual conversation.

Up until that point in my life, whenever I offered my standard, deadpan response to men, it was a foregone conclusion that they would immediately distance themselves from me.

Even Thomas-san, who is universally famous within the region for his aggressive pursuit of women, completely gave up and abandoned his attempts after a mere two interactions with me.

Yet, for some inexplicable reason, Daisuke-san never stopped calling out to me, treating me with the exact same warmth every single time.

Deep within my heart, a foreign feeling slowly began to blossom—a growing awareness of my own identity as a woman, accompanied by a quiet, blossoming happiness that a highly promising and genuinely kind man was taking a sincere interest in me.

Regrettably, when he first gathered the courage to invite me out on a proper date, it happened to fall on a Yellow Day where I had prior, unmovable obligations, forcing me to turn him down.

However, thanks to the fact that he didn’t give up and extended a second invitation later on, I was able to experience the very first romantic date of my entire life.

I was so utterly unaccustomed to the etiquette of romance, and worse yet, I didn’t even own a single piece of decent, proper clothing, which caused an immense amount of social awkwardness and trouble for Daisuke-san.

Even so, he simply laughed my anxieties away, forgave my shortcomings completely, and even went so far as to tell me, “Let’s definitely go on another date together.”

It was a profoundly, beautifully happy period of time for me.

Right around the period surrounding Daisuke-san and his party’s initial registration, our local Guild Master position was officially turned over to Roswitha-san.

Her immense workload commenced immediately with the monumental task of thoroughly liquidating the massive web of systemic corruption left behind by the previous Guild Master.

Because financial rot and an pervasive atmosphere of utter lethargy had spread like a cancer through every single tier of the Guild, she was suffering under an extraordinary amount of stress and difficulty.

It seemed that the former Department Head and she did not get along, and I frequently saw them clashing.

Every time the Guild Master pressed for answers, the former Department Head would line up various excuses to escape.

Whenever he was about to be cornered, he would use his Intimidation Skills¹ to sweep the entire matter into a cloud of ambiguity.

Since my colleagues and I witnessed these spectacles on a near-daily basis, the former Department Head earned a remarkably poor reputation among the staff.

The days when the former Department Head was in a foul mood steadily increased, but he did come to slightly hold back on his blatant slacking and overt harassment.

It was around that time that Henriette joined us.

”I look forward to working with you all-! ♡”

”Hey, you lot. Just because she is a cute newcomer doesn’t mean you should go bullying her. Make sure you support her properly,” the former Department Head said.

My very first impression was that she was a thoroughly amiable girl.

At the beginning, I believe we maintained a reasonably good relationship.

”Dietlinde-senpai, please teach me how to do this- ♪” Henriette said.

”Yes. For this task, once you have verified the documents coming from the Dismantling Department and the Appraisal Department, you must obtain formal approval from the Department Head. Then, you will deliver them directly to the accounting department,” I replied.

”Wow, amazing! As expected of Senpai- ♪” Henriette said.

”No, it is nothing,” I replied.

Our relationship began to warp around the time when a rumor started circulating that the former Department Head Randolph and she were secretly dating.

That development, which normally should have had absolutely nothing to do with me, actively worsened my position within the workplace.

(It is better to be closer to the adventurer.)

(She isn’t showing any consideration for the clients’ feelings.)

 (Unamiable.)

 (A plain, wretched body.)

 (Unfeminine.)

 (Lacking in charm.)

 (Old maid.)

 (Leftover woman.)

At first, it all began as simple advice regarding my professional duties, but before long, it degenerated into pure slander.

Because every word of it was the absolute truth, I could not even find the words to talk back.

I desperately tried not to pay too much attention to it, but it was slowly and surely eroding my heart, and the instances where my physical condition collapsed grew gradually more frequent.

Furthermore, because she never once displayed that kind of vicious attitude in front of anyone other than the former Department Head, the matter never escalated into an official problem.

Fortunately, because Daisuke-san treated me with his Healing Magic² every single time we crossed paths, I managed to avoid being driven completely to my absolute limit.

Eventually, the moment she discovered that I was the specific staff member in charge of handling Daisuke-san, she predictably began to apply intense pressure.

”For Dietlinde-senpai to be the one handling him, poor Daisuke-san is just pitiful-” Henriette said.

 ”…Is that so?” I said.

”Come on, just hand him over to me-. If you do, I just know Daisuke-san will be so much more satisfied,” Henriette said.

”When assigning the staff member in charge, the explicit wishes of the adventurer himself are always granted top priority,” I replied.

”Oh, I know all about that kind of thing. Why can’t Senpai just take the initiative and tell Daisuke-san that you want to step down from the role-? You really are completely untactful, aren’t you,” Henriette said.

There is absolutely no reason for a Guild employee to persuade an adventurer to change assignments when the individual himself does not desire it.

While I cannot completely deny that I harbored personal feelings in the matter, I held onto that professional justification and ignored her entirely.

Fortunately, the former Department Head did not seem particularly enthusiastic about the idea, so she never brought up the topic whenever she was within his sight.

However, at all other times, she would repeat those demands maliciously and persistently every single time our eyes met.

Eventually, having completely lost her patience with my refusal to bend to her will, she finally escalated her campaign to direct physical attacks.

On one particular occasion, I was ambushed inside the restroom and punched squarely in the stomach.

 ”Ugh!” I said.

”Just do what you’re told already. You’re in my way,” Henriette said.

By this stage, whenever it was just the two of us, she no longer dared to patch up her attitude or maintain her polite facade.

Coincidentally, because I happened to run into Daisuke-san immediately after the incident, he was able to heal me right away.

I had been acting tough because I didn’t want to cause any unnecessary trouble for Daisuke-san, but his presence truly saved me.

Because her act of punching my unnoticeable stomach failed to make me yield and did not turn into a public scandal, her violent behavior began to escalate rapidly.

Next, she kicked my leg, and although it did not result in a fracture, it left me with a severe hindrance to my walking.

If I had rested for a short while, it likely would have recovered naturally.

However, because there was a distinct possibility that the former Department Head would penalize my absence from the desk, I had to force myself back to work as quickly as possible.

”Dietlinde-san, are you alright?” Daisuke-san asked.

”I am perfectly alright,” I replied.

On this occasion as well, I was lucky enough to encounter Daisuke-san, who promptly treated my injury.

On the spur of the moment, I deceived him by claiming that I had merely tripped, but inside, my spirit was on the absolute verge of breaking.

Losing to her pressure which grew heavier day by day, I finally broke down and consulted Daisuke-san on the matter.

When I did, he told me that he had absolutely no intention of changing the person in charge and firmly stated that I was the one he wanted, which brought a profound sense of relief to my heart.

However, the moment I realized that Henriette would never be convinced or satisfied even if I conveyed his decision to her, my heart grew incredibly heavy once more.

The current incident took place right in the middle of that mounting dread.

The very moment the former Department Head walked in accompanying Henriette, I was seized by an incredibly foul premonition.

Yet, I never could have imagined that they would resort to this kind of method to completely drive me out.

It was a turn of events that I reasonably should have anticipated, but I suppose I was far too naive, wasn’t I.

If Daisuke-san had arrived even five minutes later than he did, I would have certainly been reduced to a Slave³.

It is certainly true that within myself, womanliness and female charm are incredibly thin.

Even so, the fact that I earnestly and faithfully engaged in my work was the singular pride I possessed in this life.

To think that even that pride would be brutally trampled upon, that I would be framed for a crime of which I am entirely innocent, denied even the right to utter a counter-argument, and dropped into the status of a slave in the depths of my despair.

And once a person’s status as a criminal slave is legally finalized, overturning that judgment is an extraordinarily difficult task.

It was truly an incredibly dangerous moment.

I no longer even know how many times this makes that I have been completely rescued by Daisuke-san.

Where anyone else would have readily given up on me, he refused to give up, calling out to me and letting me know that even someone like me is desired at least a little bit.

Whenever my physical condition faltered, he would notice it instantly and administer treatment, saving me in a purely physical sense.

And now, faced with Daisuke-san who rescued me on the absolute brink of losing everything I owned, nothing came to my mind except the desire to offer my entire existence to him.

But he tells me that he does not desire that sort of subservience, and that an equal relationship between us is what is best.

”From now on, it’s lover, right,” Daisuke-san said.

 ”…Yes,” I replied.

Even though I was completely enveloped and warm the moment we embraced, I found myself thoroughly bewildered by a sudden, powerful impulse to hold him even tighter.

I still do not truly understand Daisuke-san.

From this moment on, if I watch him from a much closer vantage point, will a day eventually come when I can understand him fully?

No, I absolutely must understand him.

The official Oath was stopped, but the state of my heart will never change.

If he desires it, I will gladly become entirely naked in the middle of the crowded streets.

Even the impure hole that certain nobles are said to prefer… while a bit of preparation would be necessary, I will happily offer it up to him.

However, for someone like me who has already offered up her entire existence, simply executing what is requested of me feels entirely insufficient.

Before it is ever requested, I must anticipate and perform exactly what he desires.

Only by doing so can this immense debt of gratitude finally begin to be repaid.

My everything exists solely for his sake….

 ===

”People like Meta-san have really started to multiply, haven’t they…” Meta Tsedes said.

”I myself was still truly immature back then. ‘Fulfill the wish before it is ever requested.’ I am deeply grateful to her for making me realize that truth,” the Narrator said.

”Meta-san has somehow managed to become even more dangerous, but… if it’s Daisuke-san we’re talking about, he’ll manage to handle it somehow, right,” Meta Tsedes said half-heartedly. “Putting that entirely aside, the Leemans members have finally shown up after a long absence, haven’t they?”

”Because during this particular era I had not yet become acquainted with Daisuke-sama, this represents incredibly valuable information. I will certainly have to ask them to let me hear about various things during our upcoming ‘meeting’,” the Narrator said.

Notes:

• Dietlinde – A tall, broad-shouldered sheep beastwoman with curled horns, fair porcelain skin, and straight platinum hair in a severe bun. Stoic and professionally dedicated to her guild duties despite severe workplace isolation, systematic harassment by Randolph, and low self-esteem, she sheds silent tears with a straight face. Cleared of a past forgery frame-up and forgiving of Henriette’s assault, she utilizes Water Magic. She harbors deep gratitude and absolute psychological devotion toward Daisuke-san, secretly loving him for his fatigue magic after he repeatedly rescued her from physical harm and enslavement.

• Roswitha – The Guild Master, a stately woman in her sixties with sharp eyes and iron-gray hair in a crown bun, commands absolute authority over the Royal Capital Branch. Wearing silver-embroidered crimson robes, her strict presence silences arguments. She acts decisively against administrative corruption and enforces rigid workplace regulations to preserve guild credibility, brooking no nonsense from anyone.

• Daisuke – Daisuke is a lean, cynical Level 85 Japanese reincarnate with tousled dark hair, amber eyes, and high guild respect. Pragmatic yet protective, his modern sensibilities reject subservient contracts for equal, intimate partnerships. He hides a 3,500 base score, using Wind/Healing magic, a spear, and forensics to hunt monsters, expose corruption, and care for his harem, acting as Dietlinde’s savior.

• Kenta – A handsome, 175cm young man with a two-block undercut and average build, he is a reincarnated Magic Swordsman wielding an ice-coated blade and possessing high Water Magic aptitude. Once a gentleman of Leemans and member of the “Three Idiots,” he now serves Salarymans and joins Alberto’s party, fighting beside Daisuke (Lv20+). He hesitates to kill, observes the hero’s hidden strength, bonds with adventurers, and dates Karina. Though a transferee who feels left out of the summoned character’s spotlight, he remains a composed, empathetic warrior who appears drained after intense clashes, especially red-light encounters.

• Thomas – A mid‑30s, 2m tall gorilla‑type beastman with thick fur, a tail, and sharp canines. Officially a B-rank adventurer with A-rank power, he wields the Wind Spear Rindvurm. Though crude and lecherous—often skipping duties to flirt with guild staff—he forms a party with his four wives. When fighting to save a woman he loves, he turns fiercely protective and chivalrous, even resorting to dogeza.

• Henriette – A petite, high-spirited dog-like beastman guild clerk (~160 cm) with drooping eyes, floppy ears, and bouncing chestnut curls in a frilly blouse. She uses a sugary, polite facade to extract favor and offload work, but harbors a malicious disposition, using psychological slander and violence to usurp control over assignments. Formerly favored by her boss Randolph until cut loose, she faces criminal enslavement for forgery, fraud, assault, and defamation. She rejects Thomas’s advances and likes Daisuke.

• Randolph – A short, burly bear-type Beastman with a thick fur ruff and blue beard, this middle-aged former Quest Mediation Department Head wears a tailored coat with gold epaulettes. Arrogant and lazy, he was demoted to apprentice for workplace harassment and administrative evasion, often using Intimidation Skills to silence subordinates. Henriette blackmails him and rumors hint they are conspiring to frame Dietlinde.

• Meta Tsedes – A statuesque knight with raven hair, amber eyes, and polished armor, she serves as a dramatic commentator who analyzes and reacts to events involving Daisuke-sama. Her voice is honeyed yet venomous. Driven by an unshakable, highly flexible loyalty to the Order’s code, she frequently prompts conversations and questions the actions of others, filtering narrative events through her sharp perspective.

• Meta – A 160cm, curvy, mid-20s blonde priestess and former duchess who became Daisuke’s lover and party mediator after he saved her. Wearing high-waisted robes, she radiates a warm pink aura, absolute devotion to Daisuke, and coldness to other men. Alongside the Narrator in meta post-chapter discourse, she offers factual commentary on world-building, character behavior, and her past.
