Volume 10 Chapter 11 The Harem’s Welcome and the Local Rumor Mill
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
It was great that I managed to become Lovers with Diet, but since she had worked so hard at her job up until now, I felt it would be an absolute waste for her to just resign.
With that in mind, I decided to go and make a request to Roswitha-san.
”Roswitha-san, I would like to ask you to cancel Dietlinde-san’s resignation…” I said.
”I don’t mind,” Roswitha replied.
”Thank you so much. But wow, you’re surprisingly casual about this, aren’t you?” I asked.
”It seems her foolish former superior treated her terribly, but losing someone as highly competent as her would be a massive blow to the Guild,” said Roswitha.
She answered in her usual matter-of-fact tone, but it was clear she genuinely valued Diet’s abilities.
”Guild Master, I am deeply sorry for causing such trouble after explicitly asking to resign before,” Dietlinde said.
”My reasons are exactly as I just stated. Dietlinde, you have your own unique strengths. There is no need to be arrogant, but you really should have a little more confidence in yourself,” Roswitha replied.
”…Yes, ma’am,” Dietlinde murmured.
Dietlinde bowed her head deeply.
The Guild Master’s words were a bit stern, but I could tell it was Roswitha-san’s own unique way of showing her support.
By the way, when Dietlinde first heard the details of the Oath¹ I share with my Lovers, she completely froze in place. Once her brain finally rebooted, she started insisting that she wanted to take the same Oath immediately, but I stopped her with every ounce of my strength.
* * *
Dietlinde used to live alone in the Guild’s employee dormitory, but now that she had become my Lover, we arranged for her to move in with us in the near future.
We couldn’t exactly make it happen today out of nowhere, but since she mentioned she wanted to come over to greet everyone and get a feel for the place, the two of us decided to walk home together.
”I’m home—” I called out.
”Excuse me for intruding,” Dietlinde said softly.
”Daisuke. On your knees. Right now,” Juliet commanded.
”Ah… yes, ma’am,” I replied.
The moment I escorted Dietlinde through the front door, Juliet was standing right there in the entryway, towering over us with her arms crossed.
Her eyes were sharp as triangles, and the furious swishing of her tail made her intense displeasure blindingly obvious.
Oh, this was bad. She was angry. Like, profoundly angry.
I quietly followed her orders and dropped directly into a formal kneeling posture on the floor.
”I’m so sorry,” I muttered.
”If you’re just apologizing automatically to get it over with, that only makes me want to snap at you more!” Juliet yelled.
I had immediately gone straight into a prostrate dogeza position to appease her, but her anger wasn’t nearly shallow enough to be bought off by something so cheap. If anything, I had just made her flip out even harder.
”Juliet, come on, don’t get so worked up,” Vanessa said.
”Daisuke-sama’s actions always possess profound foresight and calculation. If you would just listen to his explanation, I am certain you would understand the context behind his choices,” Meta added.
”Shut up, both of you!” Juliet snapped.
Vanessa and Meta both tried to soothe her, but the contrary Juliet immediately bit back at them.
Vanessa was always teasing her anyway, and Meta literally had nothing but me occupying her brain at any given second. I suppose my relationship of mutual trust with Juliet wasn’t quite solid enough yet.
”Now, now, Juliet-san. Daisuke-san only just stepped through the door, so why don’t we all calm down and talk things through rationally?” Sylvie suggested.
”She’s right. He had his back against the wall with unavoidable circumstances, you know? It’s a little pitiful to just tear into him unilaterally without letting him speak,” Ines added.
”…Fine. Whatever,” Juliet grumbled.
Thanks to Sylvie and Ines stepping in to mediate, she finally managed to cool her jets a little bit.
They both absolutely adored Juliet, and since they had been active in the party for a long time, Juliet trusted them implicitly. I would definitely have to make sure to thank them properly later. Vanessa and Meta, too.
We successfully migrated into the living room, though I was forced to remain kneeling on the floor.
When I looked around, I noticed that Regina-san and Clarissa-san—who didn’t even live with us yet—were also sitting there. The Lovers were assembled in absolute full force.
”You became Lovers with Dietlinde-san, right? I figured you’d want to do a formal introduction, so I went ahead and called everyone over!” Sylvie cheered.
”Huh? I mean, yeah, that’s how things turned out, but how did you even know?” I asked.
”Hehe. If you pay close enough attention, it’s pretty obvious when things are going to trend in that direction!” Sylvie giggled.
I guess only a woman can truly decipher the inner workings of a woman’s heart.
When I asked about it later, it turned out that Dietlinde’s sudden insistence on taking the Oath—which had completely caught me off guard—wasn’t surprising to Grete at all. Her communication skills and interpersonal intuition were honestly off the charts. I was starting to think I should just start calling her Professor Grete.
”The absolute entire responsibility for this sequence of events lies solely with me. If you must direct your anger at anyone, please direct it at me, not Daisuke-san,” Dietlinde interrupted.
”No, look, I’m not… it’s not like I’m actually angry at you, Dietlinde,” Juliet stammered.
”My personal crisis was the entire catalyst for this. In order to resolve it, Daisuke-san went so far as to perform highly conspicuous, flashy actions that he normally goes out of his way to avoid. I do not know the exact nature of your grievance, Juliet-san, but I am profoundly grateful to him,” Dietlinde explained.
”Ah, jeez! No, that’s completely wrong! I am mad, but that’s not why!” Juliet cried out.
Faced with such an intense, direct defense from Dietlinde—the very woman at the center of the incident—Juliet looked entirely thrown off balance.
Man, Dietlinde really possessed a strangely overwhelming amount of raw social pressure when she wanted to, didn’t she? There wasn’t any malice behind it, so it was fine, but still.
Anyway, what exactly was Juliet so furious about?
I had been openly talking about making a move on Dietlinde for a while now, so it couldn’t be the simple fact that the harem size had expanded. Was it because I had stuck my nose into unnecessary trouble just to save her? Yeah, that sounded highly plausible.
”You’re wrong! I mean, okay, the end result is basically the same thing, but that’s not the specific point that’s driving me crazy!” Juliet yelled.
”Then what exactly is making you so angry?” Dietlinde asked.
”…The duel! You went and had a literal duel with that Thomas guy, didn’t you?!” Juliet exasperated.
I hadn’t actually realized it at the time, but apparently, Thomas was incredibly famous around these parts for a wide variety of reasons.
He certainly had a messy, undisciplined side when it came to his obsession with women, but his raw combat ability was the absolute real deal. He apparently had a ton of titles and nicknames circulating around the community.
The Gale Spear. The Chivalrous Warrior. The Raging Tempest. The Henpecked Husband. The Man Who Never Learns His Lesson No Matter How Whipped He Is.
A few of those sounded like legitimate, cool aliases, but that last one was honestly just a straight-up insult…
”I don’t care about all the stuff you did behind the scenes to save Dietlinde. I already know that’s exactly how Daisuke operates. What makes me so furious is that you’re a B-Rank, and you willingly entered a duel against a guy who is functionally an A-Rank! You picked a fight with someone way out of your league!” Juliet scolded.
”Ah… so it was that, huh…” I muttered.
”And on top of that, there was absolutely no reason for things to escalate to that point, but you threw out those bizarre conditions and backed yourself into a corner where you couldn’t retreat!” Juliet pressed.
”Yeah, that’s true. Honestly, I had zero motivation to actually go through with it,” I admitted.
”A duel with an opponent equivalent to an A-Rank is complete recklessness! The exact moment Thomas bit on the provocation, you should have just swallowed your pride and backed down!” Juliet lectured.
”No, with the way the conversation was flowing right then, backing down wasn’t an option. I had a strong feeling that if I retreated there, it would cause massive, annoying complications for us down the road,” I explained.
”You still could have handled the negotiations with at least a little more tact!” Juliet huffed.
Though Juliet was still visually displeased, she had clearly de-escalated from her initial explosive rage. Even so, she still wasn’t remotely satisfied with the concept of the duel, continuing to grill me from multiple angles.
”In short, Juliet was just worried sick about Daisuke,” Vanessa teased.
”Juliet-san is incredibly sweet deep down, after all!” Sylvie added.
”Hey! Shut up! My personal feelings have nothing to do with this!” Juliet shouted.
”You’d save yourself a lot of trouble if you just admitted it honestly,” Ines said.
”Daisuke-sama is more than capable of handling all of your heavy emotions, you know,” Meta smiled.
”——!” Juliet sputtered.
Getting mercilessly teased by her own party Unit Members caused Juliet’s face to erupt into a bright, burning crimson.
It was incredibly endearing, but wait—wasn’t this the exact mechanical pattern where the frustration gets redirected entirely onto me?
”Because of you, Daisuke, everyone is making fun of me!” Juliet cried.
”I’m so sorry, Juliet,” I apologized.
Yep. Nailed it.
There was nothing left to do but offer a total, unconditional apology. If I joined in on the teasing now, she’d probably stay in a terrible mood for a solid week.
”The rest of us were worried sick too, but hey, you didn’t end up with any major injuries! As expected of Daisuke-san!” Sylvie cheered.
”While it is a bit of a shame that Master technically lost the match, I am just incredibly glad you returned to us in one piece,” Liese said.
”Man, so even Daisuke can actually lose a fight sometimes, huh~?” Vanessa chuckled.
”W-Wow… I was watching and worrying the whole time, but the movements were so fast my eyes couldn’t even track what was happening!” Nicola stammered.
”It was a profoundly beautiful display of martial prowess,” Ines stated.
Since the members of the First Blood party had been spectating the match live from the stands, they all began rattling off their individual impressions of the clash with Thomas.
Though, I couldn’t help but feel that Liese’s takeaway was just a tiny bit missing the point.
”Daisuke-san… throwing yourself into dangerous things like duels again… you really mustn’t do that, okay?” Clarissa chided.
”I’m deeply sorry,” I said.
”Oh my, look how incredibly honest and compliant you are with your apology this time,” Regina noted.
”Well… Clarissa-san chewed me out thoroughly for this exact type of thing before, so…” I explained.
”I’m not particularly angry, per se… it’s just that I was worried sick,” Clarissa murmured.
”Thank you so much. But I promise you, I’m completely fine,” I smiled.
”My, is Clarissa the only one who gets a personalized thank-you? The rest of us were worried sick too, you know?” Regina pouted.
”You’re entirely right. Thank you, everyone. I’m so sorry for making you all worry like that,” I stated.
Remaining firmly in my kneeling posture, I bowed my head deeply to the entire room.
Regina-san and Clarissa-san generally had absolutely nothing to do with physical combat scenarios in their daily lives, so the whole situation had probably caused them an extra layer of psychological stress.
”Juliet, I’m really sorry for making you worry, too,” I said softly.
”…Whatever. It’s fine,” Juliet muttered.
The sole reason Juliet had been throwing such a massive tantrum was purely because she had been terrified that I was going to get hurt.
Honestly, she was just too cute for words. If I actually said that out loud she’d probably murder me, though, so I kept my mouth shut.
”Ufufu~ Then I think he’s done enough penance on his knees, don’t you agree, Juliet-san?” Sylvie asked.
”…Yeah, I guess it’s fine,” Juliet relented.
”You heard her, Daisuke-san!” Sylvie giggled.
”Thank you, truly,” I said.
Thanks to Sylvie’s perfectly timed, masterful assist, I was finally given explicit permission to break my kneeling posture and stand up.
”…So, why on earth did you demand such a bizarre Reward from him in the first place?” Juliet asked.
”I figured that if I staked something as utterly ridiculous as a Lindwurm, a normal person would realize the values didn’t match at all and refuse to take the bait,” I explained.
”Well, that’s completely true. The valuation is totally skewed, so under normal circumstances, nobody would ever accept those terms. At the very least, I’d have walked away immediately,” Vanessa agreed.
”I am entirely unfamiliar with the character of this ‘Thomas’ individual, but it simply means his psychological profile deviates significantly from standard norms,” Meta analyzed.
”He’s actually quite famous around the territory, though…” Ines noted.
Since Meta fundamentally possessed a total, absolute lack of interest in the male gender as a whole, she apparently didn’t have the slightest clue who Thomas even was.
Even if the guy had walked up and spoken directly to her face in the past, her brain would have instantly deleted the memory. I mean, it’s Meta… what else do you expect?
”You know, Daisuke, you’ve accumulated quite a few colorful nicknames of your own around town,” Vanessa said.
”Huh? Really? Like what?” I asked.
”Well, to be fair, a lot of them are the kind of trash-talk people would never have the guts to say directly to your face. Do you actually want to hear them?” Vanessa smirked.
”Uh… well, now I’m kind of curious…” I admitted.
When Vanessa started listing them off, it turned out my local reputation was absolute garbage.
The Orc Killer. The Infinite Man (meant in a purely crude, sexual stamina context). The Lasagna (because my romantic strike zone is apparently incredibly wide and covers everything). The Degenerate Sub-Human Lover. The Cougar Chaser. The Man of Strange Tastes.
Apparently, the sheer variety of my Lovers and potential candidates—stretching from a heavily muscled Beastman like Gerta, to a loli-type like Camilla, all the way to older women like Regina-san—was the direct inspiration for these names.
As an Adventurer, I strictly operated solo and made a conscious effort to lay low and avoid drawing any public attention to my combat specs, so almost nobody knew my actual combat capabilities.
Because of that, I didn’t have any cool combat-related titles. That part was fine, but those last three nicknames weren’t even insults directed at me—they were just straight-up slander against my Lovers!
I am absolutely not letting the bastards who coined those names slide. Prepare yourselves, jerks. I’m going to track you down and systematically delete every single one of your Skills.
”I am incredibly happy that you get so angry on our behalf, Daisuke-san… but it is a plain fact that I am an older woman. I am so sorry for dragging down your public reputation like this,” Clarissa said.
”Please don’t apologize, Clarissa-san. You haven’t done a single thing wrong. The only people in the wrong are the idiots who are completely blind to how absolutely wonderful you are,” I insisted.
”…Thank you so much. You really are so incredibly gentle, Daisuke-san,” Clarissa smiled softly.
Clarissa-san drifted over and wrapped herself around me, and I held her tightly against my chest.
Being subjected to that kind of toxic, backhanded gossip has to hurt, no matter what. Clarissa-san was this incredibly soft, precious creature; treating her like some kind of expired old woman was completely unforgivable.
”Honestly, I’ve long since grown completely numb to being called an older woman,” Regina stepped closer. “Being a former courtesan doesn’t exactly sit well with certain sectors of polite society either. I told you about that before, didn’t I? Though I do feel terrible that my background causes people to claim Daisuke-kun has depraved tastes.”
”Regina-san, you aren’t in the wrong at all either. Personally, I think the current Regina-san is absolutely stunning, so let’s just completely ignore the opinions of the peanut gallery,” I assured her.
”Fufu~. My, Daisuke-kun, you’re quite the passionate one, aren’t you? ♡” Regina giggled.
While she wasn’t nearly as visibly discouraged as Clarissa-san, Regina-san also slinked over and clung to my side.
She was wearing a dress explicitly designed to emphasize the massive contour of her breasts, so the physical feedback was honestly spectacular.
Though, come to think of it… while these localized nicknames were basically pure insults, they did offer one highly specific practical advantage.
Due to the mechanical penalty Effect of my Ordeal², my Favorability stats were normally incredibly difficult to raise. However, there were still opportunistic women like Henriette who tried to wiggle their way close to me out of pure social calculation.
If it was just some random stranger, I could easily laugh it off and ignore them, but moving forward, I was bound to run into persistent targets where that casual dismissal wouldn’t work. Like noble heiresses, for example.
But thanks to these rumors, the prospect of becoming the Lover or wife of a man publicly labeled as having “depraved, monstrous tastes” would be heavily avoided by high-society girls.
Apparently, the consensus was that if a girl caught my eye, society would immediately brand her as someone who could only appeal to freakish degenerates. Wow. What an absolute nightmare of a social rumor mill.
Though, if it were an independent, self-sufficient noblewoman like Martina-sama, she probably wouldn’t give a single damn about that kind of public wind, I suppose.
* * *
”Well, at any rate, welcome to the family!” Ines cheered.
”Yeah. I guess I’ll offer you a welcome too,” Juliet muttered.
”Welcome, Dietlinde-san!” Sylvie smiled.
”I welcome you with open arms, Dietlinde,” Nicola said.
”Let’s just take things easy and have a good time, yeah?” Vanessa shrugged.
”Please make sure to teach me all about the inner workings of the Guild and the local Adventurer scene!” Camilla beamed.
”I’d be so happy if we could all become great friends!” Clarissa added.
”Let us work together to support our Master to the absolute best of our abilities!” Juliet declared.
”If you ever need any pointers regarding bedroom techniques, feel free to ask me literally anything~,” Regina winked.
”I would be absolutely delighted if you could share stories about the Adventurer side of Daisuke-san that I haven’t been able to see yet,” Clarissa requested.
The Lovers poured out a continuous chorus of welcoming words one after another.
Even Juliet, who had just been screaming at me a moment ago, didn’t seem to harbor a single ounce of lingering resentment toward Diet, which let me breathe a massive sigh of relief.
Liese and Ilse didn’t chime in since they weren’t technically official Lovers, but they both looked perfectly content with the situation.
”Thank you all so very much. I will devote every fiber of my being to ensuring I do not cause any inconvenience to Daisuke-san, or to any of you,” Dietlinde vowed.
”What an exemplary attitude. I have long admired your unwavering fairness in treating everyone equally regardless of status, your completely unbiased perspective, and your rigid mental core that refuses to be easily swayed by the opinions of others… but your intense faith—ah, I mean, loyalty to Daisuke-sama is also highly commendable,” Meta praised.
”You literally just tried to say ‘faith’ right now, didn’t you?!” Reinhardt barked.
”You must be imagining things, Daisuke-sama~♡” Meta cooed.
Meta leaned in and pressed herself against me with a rare, sycophantic sweetness, but she had absolutely, positively been about to use religious terminology. No doubt about it.
But honestly, digging any deeper into it was just going to give me a headache…
For the time being, she clearly understood that I actively disliked the religious framing, so as long as she didn’t start running some bizarre cult operation out in the open, I was willing to let it slide.
Given the fundamental values of my Previous Life, I wanted to respect freedom of religion as a concept.
And no, it wasn’t like I suddenly stopped caring just because the breasts she was currently smothering my arm with were incredibly soft and pliant. It was an absolutely magnificent texture. Thank you very much.
”Putting that aside, did you two actually know each other from before?” I asked.
”Yes. Meta-san and I had crossed paths not only during official business at the Adventurer’s Guild, but also when we were both making visits to the local orphanage,” Dietlinde replied.
”Dietlinde and I used to run into each other quite frequently back when I was performing community service at the Temple. The other personnel associated with the Temple were constantly subjecting me to toxic behavior and looking down on me because of my Apostasy (Conditional)³ Titles… but she was the sole individual who interacted with me completely normally, without a single hint of avoidance,” Meta explained.
”Heh. Wow, so you guys actually had a connection in a completely unexpected place like that,” I mused.
”This, too, is undoubtedly the grand guidance of Daisuke-sama,” Meta declared.
”No, I literally did absolutely nothing to guide either of you there,” I sighed.
No matter how you sliced it, it was a pure, unadulterated coincidence.
If she had called it “the guidance of the gods,” I could at least conceptually understand the phrasing, but come on.
* * *
Though the timing had been pushed back significantly by the lecture, we finally got around to doing our usual “I’m home / Welcome back” hugs.
Regina-san and Clarissa-san didn’t technically live in the house yet, but hey, details didn’t matter.
Even during this moment, Juliet turned out to be an absolute spoiled brat.
She didn’t say much of anything, but she wrapped her arms around me and squeezed with an incredible amount of physical force. I was certainly not complaining about her twin rockets being pressed firmly against my chest, though.
”I’m really sorry for making you worry so much,” I whispered.
”…Whatever, it’s fine already. Just… make sure you don’t ever do something like that again, okay?” Juliet murmured.
”I’ll do my best to avoid it,” I ruggedly stated.
”Wait, Daisuke? What kind of answer is that?!” Juliet snapped.
”Look, I will actively try to circumvent those situations as much as physically possible, but there are always going to be times where my hand is forced and there’s no way out. You have to give me some grace there. But at the bare minimum, I promise you I will never die,” I explained.
”……. You better not. Absolutely, positively do not die on me, okay?” Juliet pleaded.
”I know. I promise you,” I said.
”…Nn,” Juliet whimpered.
In a highly unusual display of public affection, Juliet closed her eyes and tilted her face up, completely waiting for a kiss in front of the entire room. I leaned down and kissed her.
Since Sylvie, Vanessa, and Camilla never hesitated to display affection whenever they felt like it, it looked like their completely shameless habits were gradually corrupting her, too.
Excellent. Keep it up, girls! More of this, please!
====
”Wow, that was an incredibly close call.”
”What exactly do you mean?”
”Since Daisuke-sama absolutely despises standing out in public, our missionary and proselytization efforts must be carried out in absolute, strict secrecy.”
”So you guys really are running a secret religious operation behind his back…”
”Due to the mechanical restrictions of Daisuke-sama’s Ordeal Skills, our current recruitment parameters are strictly limited to immediate family and household members.”
”What about in the future?”
”Naturally, we fully intend to have him guide the entire world to salvation.”
”Wow. You didn’t even hesitate on that part, huh.”
