Chapter 186 Bishop—Asia
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Rias pinched her chin, her gaze drifting into a profound silence. After a long moment, she spoke, her voice measured and composed. “I know none of you truly wish to associate with the Fallen Angels, but we lack the requisite power to drive them off, I fear.”
The group understood the bind Rias was in. Grayfia’s stance had been unambiguous; unless Azazel committed a truly egregious offense, the upper echelons of the Underworld would not intervene.
The timing was volatile. In this fragile transition from open warfare to uneasy coexistence, neither side dared to make a provocative move. A single misstep could shatter the negotiations, reignite the Great War, and leave those responsible branded as historical failures.
Whatever their private grievances, everyone present publicly voiced their opposition to further conflict.
”Buchou, make the call. We’re with you, no matter what,” Aki replied.
Aki knew that expelling Azazel was a pipe dream, so he figured he might as well bank some favor with Rias. Besides, he doubted she would truly be naive enough to invite a wolf into the fold. Even if Azazel’s facade was flawless, a girl’s intuition remained an impenetrable defense. Rias and the others harbored an instinctive distrust of him, a sense that he was trailed by a lingering, formless malice.
Rias looked around the room. Himejima Akeno, Amano Yuuma (Raynare), and the rest nodded in unison, signifying their obedience. Seeing such unwavering loyalty from her Peerage, a smile finally graced the red-haired Devil’s face.
”The truth is, Azazel’s offer is quite beneficial to us,” Rias noted. She gestured toward herself, then to Amano Yuuma and the others. “If I’m to reach High-Class Devil status anytime soon, I need more than1 luck or Dual Cultivation with Koaki—I need elite instruction. And for the four of you, with your Fallen Angel bloodlines, Azazel’s guidance will be invaluable.”
Himejima Akeno—born of a human mother and a Fallen Angel executive father—was a hybrid of three races following her Reincarnation. Amano Yuuma and her companions were hybrids of Devil and Fallen Angel. Their Fallen Angel heritage was a critical component of their power, and as the Fallen Angel Governor General, Azazel was the undisputed master of that craft. With his mentorship, their growth would be explosive.
Aki, of course, had his own Fallen Angel bloodline via his Dual Cultivation Ability, but he had kept that hidden; even Rias remained unaware.
”As for Koneko and Yuto…” Rias continued, her expression grave. “You both possess immense internal power, but it’s notoriously difficult to harness. Azazel, being a veteran of the Fallen Angels, may well hold the key to unlocking your potential.”
Rias left Asia and Aki out of the equation. Asia had not yet been Reincarnated, and Aki was already operating on a level where Azazel’s interference would be negligible.
With that, the group grasped her intent. If they couldn’t oust him, they would exploit him. It was a pragmatic trade-off for their peace of mind.
”Rias…” Akeno’s distrust was evident. “Like, if we are to accept his guidance, does he come to us, or do we go to him? It’s just, like, super suspicious, you know?”
Rias chuckled softly, shaking her head. “Akeno, do not worry. He would not dare pull anything. The Demon King does not wish to intervene for fear of upsetting the peace talks, and Azazel knows it. If he tries anything, we hold the card of exposing him at the Tri-Partite Conference.”
If Azazel were exposed and caused the Fallen Angels to lose leverage at the Conference, the repercussions would be catastrophic for him. Akeno nodded, satisfied. As the Demon King’s sister and the heir to the Gremory line, Rias’s authority to attend such a conference was absolute.
”Buchou, I’ll go draft the response,” Akeno said. “As for the supplies we’re providing, does that come out of our pocket or the public account?”
The matter settled, the Peerage felt a weight lift from their shoulders. Rias smiled craftily. “Since the Demon King himself suggested this contact, it is a mission for the higher-ups. Public funds, obviously.”
The Four Great Satans were sustained by the entire Demon race; when one took the throne, they even shed their former name. Rias wasn’t trying to sabotage her brother—she was just effectively milking the system. Furthermore, routing it through public channels would prevent Azazel from making unreasonable demands. If he pushed too far, the higher-ups would inevitably notify the Demon King during the audit, and the Demon King would be more than happy to have a ‘private chat’ with the former Governor General.
Cooperation with Azazel was a long-term play; drafting the contract and haggling over terms would take at least a week.
With Grayfia’s arrival as the catalyst, Rias finally extended the invitation to Asia for Reincarnation into her Peerage. Though it had only been a short time, Asia had become an integral part of the Occult Research Club. The others had hinted at this frequently, so when the blonde Nun looked at the chess piece in Rias’s palm, she wasn’t surprised. It wasn’t that she disliked the idea of becoming a Devil, but the finality of discarding her human identity weighed heavily on her.
”Asia, there’s no rush,” Rias reassured her. “Even if you choose not to, you’re always welcome here. You’re our friend regardless.”
The little nun looked at Rias with misty eyes and nodded firmly. As Rias started to draw her hand back, Asia reached out, clasping Rias’s slender fingers.
”Buchou, I wanna be with you! I’m ready!” Asia said.
”Asia?” Rias blinked, surprised, before breaking into a wide grin. “Are you certain? You’ll never be able to offer prayers to God again.”
Asia reflexively clasped her hands to her chest. “Oh—I am sorry, God…”
Finishing her prayer, the little nun looked at Rias with resolve. “I wanna be with everyone forever. I wanna be useful. I think God will understand.”
In this world, Gods—both Eastern and Western—truly existed, yet for reasons unknown, they remained silent, neither descending nor manifesting miracles. Even those like Hasegawa Chisato, at the level of the Ten Pillar Gods, had to seal their power to enter the human realm, knowing that revealing their true strength would force their immediate departure.
Seeing the innocent sincerity in Asia’s expression, the group laughed gently, no longer teasing her.
”I understand your resolve, Asia. Please take care of me from now on.”
”Uh…”
A crimson magic circle ignited beneath Asia, and her slender frame began to lift into the air. The Bishop piece drifted from Rias’s palm toward Asia’s chest. Infused with Aki’s essence, the Evil Piece passed through the nun’s habit, and with a brilliant flash of white light, it merged with her body.
However, the magic circle remained, and Asia stayed suspended, eyes closed in concentration.
Rias paused, then pulled out another Bishop piece—her only mutation piece. It was incredibly rare, but seeing the outcome with Aki, she chose not to gamble. She slotted it in. As the mutation piece fused, the Reincarnation rite concluded.
”I didn’t realize Asia’s potential was this vast—one Bishop piece wasn’t even enough,” Rias said. She felt a pang of regret for the wasted piece, but she quickly brushed it off. High potential was a boon, not a burden.
Akeno and the others crowded around to congratulate the new Devil, leaving Aki standing back, lost in thought. He remembered clearly that Asia only required a single Bishop piece… Was it because her Sacred Gear hadn’t been stripped? The Boosted Gear occupied the value of seven Pawns, and the Smile of the Virgin likely boosted her base potential; it followed a certain logic.
But Rias had burned her mutation piece. What about Gasper, the reincarnation of the Demon God consciousness fragment? Without that piece, that cross-dressing boy who identified as a girl would never be able to join Rias’s Peerage.

Summary:
Rias decides to forge a pragmatic alliance with Azazel to leverage his mentorship for her Peerage’s growth. She successfully recruits Asia into her ranks, using an additional mutation chess piece to complete the process. The group remains unaware of the long-term cost this mutation choice might have on future recruitments, specifically concerning Gasper.
