Volume 3 Chapter 33

”Hirosawa Kanade! You come forward alone! If you don’t, I’ll kill this girl! One word from me, and she’ll pierce her own throat! Do it!”

The next target of Kosaka’s demands was me.

”Kanade-kun…” Mana whispered, her eyes full of worry.

”Mana,” I replied calmly. “I don’t think I’ll die unless something truly catastrophic happens… I’m going. Mana, while I buy time, please find a way to save Aina-chan.”

”Aina-chan is, in truth, already safe, even without us needing to think about it,” Mana said, her voice steady. “Kosaka’s way of giving orders was clever; it is true that we cannot save Aina using conventional means… but if it is Aina, she will be fine. She herself is under no restrictions at all… If she were her usual self, she would have realized that by now.”

I didn’t understand what Mana meant, but it seemed she was certain Aina-chan would be okay. Perhaps Aina-chan hadn’t reached that realization yet, but if that was the case, I would do my best to buy her the time she needed. Aina-chan, being similar to Mana, would surely find that answer for herself eventually.

”I’m coming!” I shouted, stepping forward. “Stop doing terrible things to Aina-chan!”

”Shut up, Hirosawa Kanade!” Kosaka bellowed. “Get over here now, or I’ll kill her!”

”I got it, I got it, just calm down!” I replied. “I’m coming!”

I left my Resonant Melody and New Tokyo comrades behind and approached the rocky fortress where the “KSK Three”1 had made their nest. I was about fifty meters away from the fortress when—

 ”Alright! Stop right there!”

Obeying Kosaka’s command, I halted my steps. Now that I was this close, I could clearly sense that Haruka-san, Maria-san, and Minami-chan—who had hidden themselves—were standing by at various points, waiting to rescue Aina-chan. If we could just deal with that troublesome [Choker], they would be able to swoop in and save her immediately. Encouraged by the presence of my reliable allies, I shouted out.

”I came this far alone! That’s enough, isn’t it! Kosaka, let Aina-chan go!”

”You think I’d let her go just because of this?” Kosaka laughed, his voice rough. “Hirosawa Kanade! You know why I called you out here? It’s obviously to pummel you into the ground and kill you! Brother! I have to watch this girl, so beating Hirosawa Kanade to a pulp is up to you!”

”Yeah, leave it to me!” the elder Kosaka-nii replied.

He leapt from the high point of the rocky fortress, flying toward me at a speed that almost vanished from my line of sight. Kosaka-nii had always possessed superior physical abilities, but his movements now seemed leveled up compared to before.

”Hirosawa Kanade… long time no see!” Kosaka-nii sneered. “You were always makin’ a fool of me, weren’t ya!”

”No… that’s not true,” I said, keeping my tone neutral. “If anything, I was trying to avoid dealing with you!”

”That attitude is exactly what I’m talkin’ about!” he growled, closing the distance. “But this is the end of the road for that annoying look on your face! I can finally pummel you into the dirt! I’m so happy! Here I come!”

As if to replace a proper greeting, Kosaka-nii swung a fist at me. It was a sharp punch, but it was something I could easily stop. Seeing me block his attack, he glared at me with pure hatred.

”Damn you!” he spat. “Defense is forbidden, Hirosawa Kanade!”

”That’s right!” Kosaka added from the ridge. “Aina! Every time Hirosawa Kanade defends against my brother’s attacks, you push that knife one millimeter deeper into your throat! And that includes this one!”

 ”…Nghh!!”

At Kosaka’s command, the knife in Aina-chan’s hand was driven another millimeter into her throat. The fresh blood trickling down her neck seemed to thicken… seeing that, I couldn’t choose to defend against Kosaka-nii’s attacks.

 ”I understand!” I yelled. “I won’t defend! I won’t defend, so stop hurting Aina-chan!”

”Alright, here we go! Take this!”

 ”Ghh!!”

I was sent flying after being hit square in the face. It didn’t particularly hurt, and if I had dug my heels in, it probably would have been Kosaka-nii’s fist that shattered instead. But if I showed him that, there was a chance Kosaka would issue another order to harm Aina-chan. So, I went with the momentum and let myself be blown back.

”Come on! Stand up, Hirosawa Kanade!”

Responding to Kosaka-nii’s command, I stood back up. The next moment, a spinning kick came flying from him. I was blown away again, and just as before, I stood back up when told. We repeated the cycle of me being blown away and standing back up, over and over again.

”Heh, heh, heh,” Kosaka-nii laughed. “Pathetic, Hirosawa Kanade! Does it hurt? Are you scared? You’re going to die here just like this, you know? Come on, if you cry and beg, maybe I’ll forgive you! Why don’t you try pleading for your life?”

I didn’t take the bait. I just stood up again and stared at him. Incidentally, the damage to my body was zero. The dust and grit from the rocky terrain covered my face and body, masking it well enough. No matter how much Kosaka-nii had leveled up, an attack at that level couldn’t scratch me.

”Tch, that’s a creepy look you’ve got there!” Kosaka-nii muttered. “I’m bored of this, though. It’s time to show you true despair! Brother!”

The one who answered Kosaka-nii was the light-brown-haired man—the eldest Kosaka brother.

”Oh, finally my turn, huh!” the eldest brother roared. “Hahahaha! Hirosawa Kanade, I have no grudge against you… but I will make you pay for bullying my two cute younger brothers! Phase Five Skill: Summon Kin! Black Dragon!”

As if answering the eldest Kosaka’s roar, the area about fifty meters in front of me was enveloped in light. After the light vanished… a gigantic black dragon appeared before me, obscuring my entire field of vision. It was truly an existence capable of scratching my body—a Black Dragon, a monster from the lower levels of a Phase Six dungeon, stood there, looming over me.

 Summary:

Kanade approaches the KSK Three’s rocky fortress to rescue the hostage Aina-chan. Despite the brothers’ brutal efforts to beat him into submission, Kanade remains physically unscathed. The scene culminates in the eldest Kosaka brother summoning a massive Black Dragon to finish the fight.

 —

 Trivia:

Mana knows that Aina is currently safe due to a technicality regarding the hostage’s lack of restrictions.

Kosaka-nii believes Kanade is mocking him, a misunderstanding based on Kanade’s refusal to engage with him.

Kanade’s internal monologue reveals he is effectively immune to any damage lower than that of a Phase Six monster.

The dust on Kanade’s body is intentional to hide his lack of injuries from the attackers.
