Volume 11 Chapter 25 Emergency Evacuation

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Winter had arrived with the early December chill. Honestly, I’m not a fan. Sure, I like the aesthetic of snow, but the biting cold is a massive drag. My skin dries out, the humidity plummets, and the static electricity is a genuine physical hazard—I swear, everything I touch gives me a zap. It’s miserable. Not that pollen season is any better, but at least that’s a different kind of hell.

By the way, it turns out Tomoe was the one who helped Elmer-san. When I caught up with him, he answered pretty plainly. He’d intended to escort her to the Royal Capital, but they split up at a town along the way because he fell in love with the local brew. Knowing a drinker, she probably forgot her plans entirely. Alcoholics aren’t exactly known for their reliability, are they? Since we never made a formal pact to meet again, I’m just going to leave it be.

While chatting with Grete, the conversation drifted to her old party, the ‘Wyvern Slayers.’ There’s a cat-kin named Etogā who acts like I’m his older brother for some reason.

We’ve worked together at a boys’ bar, and honestly, the guy is so childish and hopelessly endearing that I’ve grown fond of him. It’s like having a nephew, I guess.

Then there’s Franziska, the honor student type—a leopard-kin. There’s also a scrawny healer named Hans, and his partner, a bear-kin named Irene, who’s got a jealous streak a mile wide. Apparently, after Grete left, they brought in a “flexible” guy to fill the slot. Etogā described him as “spineless.” Not that I have much interest in the men of other parties.

”His name’s Marco. He’s seeing Irene,” Grete mentioned.

”Wait, what? Already? I thought she was with Hans?”

”Oh, she’s still with Hans, too. She’s got a multiple-partner setup, just like you, Daisuke-san,” she added with a giggle.

”Seriously? That’s a reverse harem, isn’t it? Impressive.”

Apparently, “Marco-not-a-girl” got snapped up (sexually) by Irene immediately upon joining. Talk about fast-tracking! I usually take ages, unless there’s something specific involved. And to think she assaulted him and then they started dating? I’m not exactly envious, but it leaves a weird aftertaste.

”Because of that, Franziska’s been feeling pretty uncomfortable. We’ve been trying to recruit her for our party—could she stay here for a bit?”

”As a squatter? We don’t have a spare room, but if she’s okay sharing with you and the others, I don’t mind.”

 ”Thanks! You’re the best, Daisuke-san!”

Grete hugged me, and I couldn’t stop the goofy grin from spreading across my face. Heh heh. Franziska is the leader of the Wyvern Slayers. Her tone is a bit rough, but she’s cool, sharp, and cute.

She’s a mentor figure to Etogā, and since she’s got Grete’s stamp of approval, I’m sure she’s reliable enough. She isn’t exactly a “lover candidate,” but I like to cater to my current lovers whenever I can.

* * *

A few days later, Franziska showed up. I was surprised to see her at night. While some folks are night owls, they usually stick to izakayas or the red-light district; people don’t just drop by houses unexpectedly. Plus, she was hurt.

”What happened to you? Want to talk about it?”

”It’s… a long story. I’m sorry to ask, but can you let me stay here, just for a little while?”

”I already told you that you were welcome, so that’s fine. But… you’re okay sharing with Grete and the others, right?”

”I’m perfectly fine with it!” Grete chirped.

 ”Me too,” Nicola added.

”I’m in no position to be picky,” Franziska muttered. “I’m grateful for the roof.”

I’d already prepared myself, and since she looked so apologetic, I decided to take her in. She was still wearing her armor, carrying only her small personal items and her sword.

She reeked of booze—did she come straight from the tavern after the dungeon? Did she leave everything else at the inn? The sudden arrival and the state of her definitely signaled an emergency.

I cast some healing magic and got her some fresh clothes. I’ll make her take a bath later. As for the reason, it turned out she’d been punched out by Irene in the middle of a drinking session.

”I’m usually careful, but I had too much to drink and accidentally put an arm around Marco’s shoulder.”

”You weren’t trying to seduce him, right?”

”Of course not! It wasn’t even on my mind. I just wanted to say, ‘Glad things are working out for you,’ but… yeah, that was a mistake.”

Irene lost it, beat her up, and Franziska had to run for it. She barely had any gear on her since she keeps almost nothing at the inn—I forgot, inns for D-rank adventurers are basically lawless zones. I’ve had my gear stolen before, too. She remembered hearing from Grete that I’m always open to guests, so she swallowed her pride and came here.

She thought about trying to talk it out, but they were both drunk, and Irene was so enraged she was clearly aiming to kill. Franziska chose to bail.1

Honestly? That was the right call. Dealing with a jealous yandere is a nightmare.

I remember a guy named Kenta from my previous life; a jealous yandere stalked him and wrecked his life, personal and professional. My party members were horrified, but the tired look on his face haunts me. Takuya, the yandere-lover, was the only one who seemed envious. That guy is beyond saving.

”She’s been wanting to get rid of me for a while,” Franziska sighed. “I was getting in the way of her hoarding new men.”

”So she’s purging the party for the reverse harem?”

”She’s been resenting me for a long time, regardless.”

I can kind of understand Irene’s feelings, but this is way too far. If you want someone out, do it civilly, or you’re just planting the seeds for future vengeance.

Apparently, the “new man” wasn’t Marco, but another guy they’d added. It’s an impressively thorough reverse-harem strategy. Once Franziska leaves, the transformation is complete. They aren’t all with Etogā, so it’s not entirely a reverse harem, but as the party leader, Franziska naturally interacts with the male members.

That was the rub. It sounds a lot like why Grete had to leave, too.

In the flow of conversation, I finally heard the real story of Grete’s departure: Hans had developed feelings for her. Sorry, Hans, sounds like you got NTR’d.2

Irene, being the jealous type, couldn’t handle her lover looking at another woman, and the friction just built up until Grete had to get out.

”I was actually in a bit of trouble, too,” Grete added with a grin.

”Hey, don’t say that like it was a fun time.”

”But that’s how I ended up with you, Daisuke-san! That worked out for you, right?”

 ”I mean… I suppose I’m happy, yeah.”

 ”Then it’s all good!”

Gwaaaah! I’m melting under the sheer power of Grete’s “sunny” personality!

I’m a gloomier type, so I’m just taking critical damage, but Nicola is just giving a strained smile. Franziska, who’s nursing fresh wounds from a lovers’ spat, looks entirely checked out.

”So, Franziska was destined for the same fate,” I mused.

”I thought I was safe, but Grete’s prediction came true,” Franziska admitted.

”I thought I had another six months, but it seems the dam broke when I left,” Grete said.

Grete moved out in late September—about two months ago. In that time, they’ve added two new members, eaten both of them, formed a reverse harem, and escalated to attempted murder. A lot has been happening.

As we were talking, the security system alerted me to an intruder. Nine times out of ten, it’s Irene. Being a beast-kin, she probably tracked the scent. Annoying, but I have to deal with it. I told Franziska and Grete to stay inside for their safety, and I stepped out alone.

 ”…”

”What do you want at this hour? I didn’t invite you.”

As expected, Irene was there. She stared at me in silence. Two of her “harem members” were with her, but Hans was missing. Is he passed out somewhere again? Etogā isn’t part of the harem, so he’s probably sleeping at the inn. Irene and her two cronies looked pretty battered—they probably tried to stop her as best they could.

”…” Irene finally spoke. “Give me that woman, and I’ll go home.”

”That’s not up for negotiation. She’s staying here. Go home.”

 ”Why…”

”Because I decided to take her in. Do you need a better reason than that?”

”Irene, just give it up!” one of the cronies pleaded.

”Yeah, let it go! Why are we doing this?”

The two guys were desperate, and honestly, can you blame them? Franziska had a few drinks and got careless, but she’s not worth dying over. If anything, Irene was the one in the wrong for throwing the first punch.

Irene, however, was beyond reason. She grabbed her axe, letting her mana surge. If she’s going to be explicitly hostile, I don’t have to be polite.

”You’re a decent D-rank, but are you really trying to pick a fight with me?”

 ”…”

”Ignoring me? Fine. But I wouldn’t move if I were you. Feel that sensation around your neck? Move, and you’re dead.”

 ”? …!?”

 ”E-eh!? Me too?!”

”I told you this was a bad idea!”

Irene finally registered the wire wrapped around her neck, and her composure shattered. The two cronies were half-crying.

My estate doesn’t just detect intruders; it’s equipped with magic items designed for interception and restraint. Since I was home, I’d set them only to detect, but when I’m out, they go into autonomous mode. I didn’t use my own strength; I showed her the gear to prove that the house is a fortress, even when I’m not around. I don’t intend to let this slide, but I need to make sure there’s no room for her to keep having these stupid ideas.

Since she chose hostility, I moved to the restraint/elimination phase. The items have high-level Stealth skills, so I could slip the wires around their necks without them noticing. Try anything, and heads roll. Now that she’s sufficiently intimidated, she might actually listen to reason. I don’t really want to kill her.

”If you accept my terms, I’ll let this go. If not? This becomes a guard matter. You won’t just be rotting in a jail cell—you’re looking at slavery.”

 ”…”

”The terms are simple. You never touch her again. Directly or indirectly.”

She’s not just trespassing; she committed assault and attempted murder. If she pulls back now, I won’t report her.

”Think about it rationally. Walk away, and you can go back to your harem. Keep obsessing over her—and Grete, while you’re at it—and you’ll be a slave, separated from all your men. Which do you prefer?”

 ”…”

 ”Choose.”

 ”I… accept your terms.”

”Good. Then, give me an ‘Oath.’”

You might have forgotten, but in this world, the highest form of promise is an “Oath” to the gods. Breaking it doesn’t kill you instantly, but Divine Punishment is a living hell. Meta once broke an Oath under extreme circumstances, and she had to spend years doing menial labor as penance.

For Irene, Divine Punishment would mean a permanent 50% hit to her ability scores. She wouldn’t be able to earn enough to maintain her harem, and honestly? A woman with a “Divine Punishment” tag isn’t exactly going to keep her men interested.

”I… take a Vow to the Gods that I will not harm Franziska or Grete, directly or indirectly.”

 ”Hmm, that’ll do.”

She still had enough sense left to swear properly, so I let her go. Just to be safe, I made the two cronies swear, too. It’s not like they have much of a choice.

And no, I didn’t include myself in the Oath. I’m not exactly worried about a D-rank taking me down. Even if I’m caught off guard, I can tank it. Besides, once she’s sworn, there’s no reason for her to try and eliminate me.

Later, I heard Etogā tried to stop Irene, but he’d had a few drinks, lost his coordination, and got downed in one punch. As that president (Riri-ka) says: “Don’t let the booze drink you!” Hans was too weak to stop her, and too much of a coward to come to my house, so he just did nothing. Pathetic.

And that’s how Franziska ended up crashing here. She’s out of that party for good and will be working with the “First Blood” party—which, of course, includes Grete. Jealousy is a scary thing, truly.

 —

 Summary:

Franziska, a leopard-kin adventurer, seeks refuge at Daisuke’s estate after a violent confrontation with her former party member, Irene. Daisuke intervenes when Irene attempts to hunt her down, forcing an “Oath” to the gods upon the aggressor to ensure future safety. Franziska subsequently joins the “First Blood” party, leaving behind her chaotic former group.

 —

 Trivia:

The security system of Daisuke’s estate is equipped with high-level Stealth and restraint magic items that function autonomously.

Breaking an “Oath” to the gods in this world inflicts “Divine Punishment,” which reduces a person’s ability scores by half and assigns a disreputable title.

Daisuke was previously a victim of theft at a low-rank inn, which is why he is cynical about the security of such places.
