Chapter 547 Season of Trials ①

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”Ugh… blegh… gah…”

No, that wasn’t a frog croaking. It was my beloved Ancient Elf, Carley, struggling through a bout of morning sickness. I’d spent the whole morning at her side, rubbing her back while she kept her face buried in a bucket.

”There, there. Don’t push yourself,” I said quietly. “Honestly, if you’re gonna throw up, it’s probably better to just get it all out.”

”Ugh…” Carley let out a weak breath as she finally lifted her head. “I… I never thought morning sickness would be this awful…”

Between my death match with Sister Marian and all those ongoing “experiments” with Nada-san from the Southern Continent, I’d still been making my daily rounds to check on my wives. With several of them pregnant, keeping an eye on how they were doing had become part of my routine.

Lily, my love-slave, and Satsuki, my Love Mage, were staying at the Dildo-Buddy Palace, so seeing them was easy enough. But Sister Amelia, my beloved Saint, was at the convent, while Carley was here at the royal palace. Running around between them kept me busy.

”It’s not just the nausea,” Carley said with a sigh. “I can’t eat properly either. I’d finally started gaining a healthy amount of weight…”

”Look at it this way,” I replied with a reassuring smile. “You were eating really well before this started, so you’re holding up fine. You’ve been doing great, Carley.”

”…I hope so,” she murmured, looking exhausted. “I really hope you’re right.”

I thought about patting her head, but when she felt this sick, she could be sensitive about being touched. Instead, I moved on to asking about her other symptoms.

”How’s the smell in here? When Aerith was pregnant, her sense of smell got so bad it was a disaster. I ended up making a few things to help.”

Carley blinked and glanced around the room.

”Now that you mention it… I was wondering why the room smelled so pleasant. That was your doing?” She nodded slowly. “It’s definitely easier to handle than before.”

”Good. I also brought some fruit that helped Lily when she was dealing with this. Don’t force yourself if you can’t eat it, but let’s try a few things. I’ve already talked to the palace maids too, so if anything feels wrong, tell them right away. Don’t keep it to yourself.”

”Y-yes…” Carley answered softly. “You really think of everything…”

At this point, I’d practically become a master of dealing with morning sickness. The clueless, panicking version of me from Lily’s first pregnancy was long gone. I handled things smoothly now, and Carley seemed a little calmer because of it.

Of course, I still couldn’t relax yet.

After she managed to keep some fruit down, I had her take the medicine my master prepared. Then I checked in with the maids and guards, left instructions for the cooks, and made sure every detail had been covered.

The palace staff were surprisingly diligent. The maids and cooks were even taking notes. They were probably preparing for the day the royal family would face the same situation.

Not the Queen herself, of course.

They were probably thinking about Unia, the daughter of Duke Greter.

Once I finished with Carley, I headed straight for Queen Cecile’s office. I didn’t bother stopping for the guards. I simply greeted them and walked right in.

 ”Excuse me,” I announced.

”Mm. You’re here,” the Queen replied without looking up.

She wasn’t sitting behind her desk today. Instead, she stood off to the side.

Occupying the Queen’s seat was the future king of our country.

 Prince Roland.

 ”Kento-san…!”

A moment ago, he’d been staring at the mountain of paperwork with a look of complete despair. The instant he saw me, his eyes lit up.

He looked like a man who’d found salvation.

Unfortunately for him, salvation wasn’t coming.

At least, not while the Queen was around.

”Roland,” the Queen said firmly. “Today, he is the Lord Harvest. Am I mistaken?”

”Hii—!” Roland straightened immediately. “Y-yes, Sister! Lord Harvest, I’m very glad you’ve come…!”

”Indeed,” I replied with a polite bow. “Your Highness, I trust you’re in excellent spirits today.”

 Naturally, I was being sarcastic.

Anyone could see he wasn’t in excellent spirits.

He was currently being thrown headfirst into an intensive course on becoming king.

”Ugh…” Roland groaned. “Lord Harvest, you’re as sarcastic as ever…”

Looks like they weren’t going easy on him.

He shot me an irritated look, so I quickly dropped the formal act.

”Heh. Just teasing, Roly.” I pulled a small package from my robe. “I brought you a snack.”

 ”K-Kento-saaan!”

”Lord Harvest,” the Queen interrupted sharply, “don’t spoil him.”

”Oh, come now, Your Majesty.” I chuckled. “I understand how you feel, but isn’t that the reason you called me here?”

 ”…Hmph.”

 The Queen looked away slightly.

 Still, her expression softened.

 ”I suppose you’re correct.”

This winter, the Queen had decided to push Prince Roland as hard as possible.

It couldn’t have been an easy decision. She adored her younger brother.

Still, circumstances didn’t allow for hesitation.

 The succession was approaching.

I’d say it was the year after next, but the year was nearly over already. Once the new year arrived, there would be less than a year remaining.

 Time was running out.

Ideally, she would’ve liked more room to prepare.

But things had changed rapidly over the last year.

The situation involving Unia, combined with the end of the war in the Canaria Kingdom, had accelerated everything.

 Thankfully, those changes were positive.

 The timing wasn’t bad either.

Most diplomatic visits had concluded, and the Wielope Empire had promised to withdraw. Until spring, there weren’t any major crises looming over us.

Instead, there was a mountain of complicated work caused by the reopening of trade with Wielope.

In other words, the perfect training ground for a future king.

”Did His Highness make a serious mistake today?” I asked, glancing toward the Queen. “Or do something reckless?”

”…No,” she admitted. “He’s doing well. Better than I was when I first sat in that chair.”

 ”Sister…!”

 Roland’s eyes widened.

Rare praise from the Queen carried weight.

That was where I came in as his tutor.

Teaching him about ordinary citizens was one thing.

Teaching him how to govern a kingdom was another matter entirely. Honestly, I felt out of my depth.

Still, the Queen had a different purpose in mind.

”Roly—rather, Your Highness,” I corrected. “You already know this, but unlike the Queen, you’ve been given time to prepare. That’s a tremendous advantage. Let’s finish this task first, then we can take a break and eat those snacks. You can keep going a little longer, can’t you?”

 ”…Understood.”

 Roland straightened his back.

 ”Lord Harvest, assist me.”

 ”Of course, Your Highness.”

 My real role was simple.

 Keep the Prince motivated.

And stop the Queen from going overboard.

Roland was surprisingly honest for a teenage boy. He took his duties seriously and genuinely wanted to become a worthy king.

That didn’t mean everything came easily to him.

If anything, he failed quite often.

The Queen’s job was to be strict.

Ideally, she’d balance rewards and discipline.

The problem was that whenever she tried to reward him, her affection as an older sister got in the way.

Then, when she tried to compensate for that bias, she became too harsh.

What they needed was someone in the middle.

For some reason, that person ended up being me.

”So where are you getting stuck?” I asked as I looked over the reports.

”This issue here.” Roland rubbed his forehead. “Since trade with Wielope resumed, the number of travelers has increased dramatically. There aren’t enough inns. People are camping instead, but that requires guards. We don’t have enough personnel for that. And even if we did, the roads aren’t maintained well enough to move large groups efficiently. The local lords are trying to manage it, but they can’t keep up. This is a joint petition from the eastern nobles asking for assistance.”

”I see.” I nodded. “That’s a difficult one. Where do you think we should begin, Your Highness?”

”…If we’re talking about the root problem, it’s the lack of inns,” Roland said after some thought. “But the roads seem like the more urgent issue. As for increasing the number of guards… I don’t think we should do that.”

 ”And why not?”

”…Because if we improve the roads, we won’t need more guards.”

 ”I see.”

 I nodded.

 ”And why is that?”

 ”Eh?”

 Roland blinked.

 ”Why? Isn’t that obvious?”

”That’s not a complete answer,” I said. “Be more specific.”

”Hmm…” He scratched his head. “Well… if the roads become safer, merchants could probably get by with fewer guards, maybe?”

 ”That’s one possibility.”

 I nodded again.

”But if you were a merchant, would you really cut back on guards so easily? If something goes wrong, you lose your goods, your money, and your time.”

 ”T-then what should I do…?”

Even though my role was called assisting, what I really did was draw out the Prince’s own thinking.

And when there were flaws in his logic, I pointed them out.

…Come to think of it, that was a pretty massive responsibility, wasn’t it?
