Volume 3 Chapter 2 Shame
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Adultery.” That, apparently, is the word for a morally unacceptable relationship between a man and a woman. Not that I’d know.
That particular immoral act was narrowly avoided thanks to the partner’s husband returning home ahead of schedule. It wasn’t a tryst I’d ever wanted in the first place, but never in my past life—or this one—did I think I’d end up playing the role of a man fleeing a bedroom in the nude.
Barefoot, at that.
Pathetic.
I walked through the silent residential streets without shoes. Naturally, the roads in this world aren’t asphalt; they’re gravel, with the occasional stretch of cobblestone. The soles of my feet were assaulted by unbearable, stabbing pain from every loose stone. To top it off, horse manure was scattered everywhere, mixed in with some dog mess—if it weren’t for the light of the full moon, I would’ve been in even worse shape.
Still, I finally managed to reach Ariane-neesan’s house.
”Larry, why aren’t you wearing any shoes?”
When my sister asked, I told her everything from the celebration onwards, careful to hide Professor Lizabel’s name and position.
”You fool. You have children now, what are you doing? You’re far too careless.”
She scolded me at length, insisting that no matter how much a woman might come onto me, I have to be firm and push them away when things are wrong. I ignored the fact that my sister’s intensity caused three-month-old Jennifer to start crying, and that her husband in the background had a somewhat embarrassed expression on his face.
”Don’t you ever do something as shameful as being an adulterer again. Do you have the old man’s blood in you or something?”
The next morning, sent off by my sister’s lingering grumbles, my brother-in-law drove me in his carriage to the main gate of the inner wall.
”Next time, bring Marie-san and your daughter to visit. I want to thank you properly for that gift you gave us. And hey, let me know when you’re heading back to the village; I’ll send you to Obernbach on our shop’s boat.”
He was thanking me for the money I’d handed over earlier, supposedly for house repairs. His family had been trading medicinal herbs for three generations using their own boats, and they had a decent shopfront near the port. It had been half-burned by mercenaries during the recent conflict, but they were already well into repairs—a testament, perhaps, to their solid reputation.
Marie was currently at a recovery facility postpartum. They had strict visitation rules—likely to prevent infection—meaning a mother couldn’t leave for a month, and the child for three. That meant I wouldn’t be able to visit until winter, in November. I told him as much and we parted ways.
As an aside, the brother-in-law and I have different foot sizes, so I didn’t have shoes that fit. I ended up returning in combat sandals.
”Coming home in the morning? What is with that footwear? Were you playing the adulterer?”
”We’ve been sleeping on blankets on the floor, while you’ve been frolicking in a fluffy bed. Must be nice.”
My slaves are loud-mouthed and annoying.
(Shut up!)
What I’d just slept on was a bed of nails; I’d have preferred the blanket on the floor.
Today was the start of the new term and I was swamped, so I took Pamela and Kenze (she/her) and headed to the Dining Hall early. On the way, I saw the notice board. My expulsion notice was posted right next to the one announcing my promotion to associate professor. It’s likely the first time in the Academy’s hundred-plus-year history that’s happened. Then again, even in Japan in my previous life—a place with so many schools—I doubt such a ridiculous thing has ever occurred.
Whether that was the reason or not, every student I saw looked at me as if I were some kind of monster.
”You’re popular.”
Like hell I am. I shouldn’t have taken in this noisy little Elf Mage, Pamela.
After breakfast, I returned the two slaves to the laboratory and headed to the auditorium to attend the morning assembly for the entire student body. It was located on the opposite side of the Dining Hall from the Medical Magic wing, past a different complex-type research building.
”Hey! You heartbreaker.”
As I was walking, someone said that and slapped me on the back.
”Professor, shouldn’t you be with His Majesty?”
I turned around to find Karl-professor of the Third Medical Magic, the handsome guy who should have been accompanying the King.
”Didn’t you know? His Majesty returned last night.”
According to him, they’d made progress in suppressing the rebellion in the Straba Province, so they’d left the confrontation with Kiridal in the South Bohemia Province to Marquis Sabaski and returned.
”They couldn’t just leave the government of a country that had just seen a rebellion unattended forever, after all.”
Could that be why Professor Lizabel’s husband had suddenly returned?
”More importantly, I heard about it—Professor Lizabel took you home after the celebration. You went to her house? So, how was it, you heartbreaker?”
I thought the whole thing about going to the pasta shop had been a natural flow of events, but to have rumors like that spreading… my guard is as thin as my sister said. Even so, I figured this guy was safe, so I ended up telling him about last night. About how I’d been lured to her house with the promise of information on graphite, how I’d been stripped down in the bathroom, and how I’d fled when her husband came home. I even told him about leaving my shoes behind and enduring the pain to walk the gravel road to my sister’s house. I just left out the part where she’d given me a little “service” with her mouth.
”I see. You had a rough time, Larry.”
I hadn’t been looking at his face while walking, but when I finished, he put a hand on my shoulder, sounding sympathetic, as if he really cared.
Then.
He burst out laughing.
I shouldn’t have said a word.
”Heehee, hoohoo, what is that, heehee, stop making me laugh!”
The guy was crying, laughing so hard he couldn’t breathe properly.
”Forget it. I was an idiot to think I could talk to you.”
I’d trusted him, especially since he’d helped me hide Kenze (she/her).
”My bad, my bad, I just hit a nerve.”
”Whatever.”
”Don’t be like that. You know how it is: women who can wield Mana have strong sexual desires. Besides, the partner was a woman in her thirties, prime age—adultery with a married woman is common enough, don’t worry about it.”
I wonder if that’s true.
”But to think Lizabel was a shotacon… she’s a beauty, so a lot of guys were aiming for her even knowing she was a married woman, like Professor Meinhardt of the First Medical Magic.”
Professor Meinhardt is the head of the First Medical Magic Laboratory. Amazoness are rare, and he’s a heartless bastard who wanted me to let him vivisect Kenze (she/her).
Come to think of it, he was the most vocal opponent of my promotion to professor at the faculty meeting. If he holds a grudge, I might be inviting more trouble after being taken home this time. I’ll have to be careful.
”Anyway, how is Marie-san doing?”
He changed the subject, which helped me out. While I was telling him that both mother and child were healthy but visitation was restricted, we arrived at the reception area of the auditorium.
We were handed green sashes to wear—like we were running for office. Professor Lizabel, who arrived later, had a red sash. I wanted to retort that we weren’t instant noodles, but I held my tongue.
The auditorium was a Romanesque building with few windows and thick walls. Inside, there was a stage, like a gymnasium, and we were guided up onto it, sashes and all.
”I’m sorry about yesterday. I have your shoes, so I’ll bring them to you later.”
Professor Lizabel, sitting in a row to my left on the stage, whispered to me. I had a lot to say, but I gritted my teeth and replied that I understood.
Even so, her outfit today was quite daring. It was a tight, simple one-piece dress without any flashy decorations, but it was off-the-shoulder, boldly exposing her chest and showing off her cleavage without hesitation.
As we waited, students, research students, and other staff members filed in, filling the hall.
”Quiet, please.”
A bell rang through the murmuring hall, and the master of ceremonies shouted.
”Everyone, pray to your god of choice.”
I suppose this is a country with religious freedom, but the Kingdom of Schuberitz loves these kinds of rituals.
”At ease. We will now begin the Fourth Term Opening Ceremony. Now, a greeting from the Academy President.”
With that, a tall, bearded old man walked to the center of the stage. He gave a speech that lasted for several minutes in a hall without a microphone. I was amazed by his incredible stamina.
The content of his speech included a memorial for five Academy members who had died during the Haritz Rebellion, including Professor Pauman (he/him) and Henrietta-san, a discussion on the political situation—such as how the rebellion in the Straba Province had not fully subsided—and finally, the announcement that Associate Professor Lizabel would be succeeding Professor Hoffman as professor, and that I would be succeeding Professor Pauman (he/him).
”Now, the introduction of our newly appointed Professors. Professor Lizabel, please stand.”
As she stood, the MC actually began reading her biography.
”Entered the Academy at fourteen, graduated at sixteen, married the current Royal Capital Guard Commander Josef von Möller at eighteen. Since then, while raising children, she has taught at our Academy as a research student, assistant professor, and associate professor, and has now succeeded the retired Professor Hoffman as professor.”
An impeccable record.
She claims to have been a handful, but of course, there was no mention of that.
More importantly, was he going to reveal my academic background here?
Entered Magic School, transferred to the Academy after four months for various reasons, and was expelled from that Academy after four months for poor conduct.
Having that read out after the perfect Professor Lizabel would be way too embarrassing.
”Now, Professor Lizabel, your inaugural address.”
Wait, wait, I didn’t hear anything about giving a speech!
She walked to the spot where the Academy President had been standing.
”Thank you for that excessive introduction.”
She bowed to the MC and then turned to the audience.
”As just introduced, I am Lizabel Balkenhole Möller. I have the honor of being appointed as a professor in the Simple-type Exploration Laboratory.”
She began her address in a calm, dignified voice—you would never believe she’d been trying to commit adultery just last night.
I’m in trouble.
Mr. MC, how do you intend to introduce me?
Depending on how you introduce me, I’m running out of here.
I don’t have a record as impressive as hers—what am I supposed to talk about? I have no idea.
”This concludes my inaugural address. Thank you.”
Finally, Professor Lizabel’s speech was over.
What should I do? Run?
”Next, the appointment of the Associate Professor will be presented by our office.”
No speech? If so, I’m a little relieved.
”Associate Professor Larry Fee Getys, please stand.”
Standing in front of about two hundred listeners made my heart race a little. Students in the front, research students behind them, and staff lining the walls.
I gave a light bow, and the introduction began.
As a successor to the late Professor Pauman (he/him), I was recommended by Lord Fourth Sage, and at yesterday’s faculty meeting, I was officially approved as an associate professor of the Simple-type Magic Research Lab, assuming my position as of today.
As my words faltered, I bowed once more, intending to sit down, but the moderator cleared their throat.
”Associate Professor Larry is only fourteen, but he has been involved in twenty-eight blueprints, twenty-two of which list him as lead author.”
(Wait, that many?) I thought to myself, just as the audience erupted into a buzz of whispers.
”Order!”
The moderator called out several times, but it took a while for the hall to settle.
”That concludes the introduction of our new faculty member. Next, we will cover the schedule for this term.”
My introduction had ended with a trailing-off sensation. Well, that is fine.
Once the meeting was adjourned and I stepped off the stage, I was met by a woman who looked every bit the educator. Professor Lizabel, who had descended with me, brushed past her without a word, and I made to follow suit.
”Hold on, Associate Professor Larry.”
”Ah, yes?”
I turned to see an imposing woman standing there, giving off an atmosphere reminiscent of Lady Louise.
”Nice to meet you. I am Elga Sabaski-Meinecke, of the Simple-type Puppet Lab on the second floor. I am the Dean of the Simple-type faculty.”
”Oh, a pleasure to meet you. I am Larry Fee Getys.”
(Wait, what?) A Dean? That sounds like a superior officer. If that is the case, why did Lizabel walk right past her without so much as a greeting?
”Listen closely, because I am only going to say this once.”
She seemed intense. She thrust a stack of documents into my hands.
”Those are the profiles for the students and staff on the fourth floor. You are to conduct individual aptitude assessments with everyone this morning. Determine the future direction of the lab and assign them their duties.”
(What?) Aptitude assessments, I can understand. But assigning them duties right away?
”I haven’t even decided on a direction yet.”
”Then think of one—immediately. Do you intend to leave the students and staff of your lab idling?”
When put that way, I could not argue.
”Um, am I allowed to ignore the work Professor Pauman (he/him) has been doing until now?”
”Judge that for yourself. That is exactly what the interviews are for.”
I felt like I had been tossed back into the life of a stagnant middle manager. Do I really have to deal with that kind of work in this world, too? This woman has no mercy for a boy who looks fourteen.
”May I ask one thing?”
”Go ahead. What is it?”
”Much of what I do is considered top-secret military business. Is it really all right to have my subordinates help with that?”
”If you are referring to the fixed-wing drones, inform them of the confidentiality and then put them to work. The recent uprising in the Straba Province made the existence of those machines known to both friend and foe alike. If there is other classified tech, use your own judgment based on who you are dealing with. If you need to make them your own to ensure loyalty, feel free.”
(What?) Did she just…?
”Furthermore, the drones are to be used for flight training by the children in my class. This is a direct order from His Majesty, as their effectiveness was proven during the suppression of the Straba rebellion.”
What is that supposed to mean? So pushy.
”Um, if the enemy already knows about them, won’t the students in the lab be at risk of kidnapping?”
”You look smart, but you are dense. Even with top-secret technology, information always leaks. But as long as you make it time-consuming to reverse-engineer, it is the same thing in the end. And the most important thing: don’t reveal core technologies to the staff here unless absolutely necessary. That is common sense.”
”No, that is not what I mean—I am talking about the students’ personal safety. I was kidnapped myself, and it nearly killed me.”
”Don’t worry about that. The students and staff here are well aware of the stakes. Now, at 3:00 PM, we are holding a faculty meeting in the first-floor conference room. We will be deciding on upcoming research topics and lecture schedules. Bring your assistant professor with you. Understood?”
I had no choice but to say, “Yes.”
She reminds me of a sales manager from the first company I worked for in my previous life. At this rate, she will be piling on impossible quotas before I know it.

• Pauman – A deceased Academy professor and former Magic Tool Lab head whose course load was inherited by Larry, Eida, and the protagonist. Known for questionable research, an exploitative nature, and a controversial history with female students, he previously mentored Katrina.
