Chapter 219 Settlement and Rias’s Return
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The moment the portal closed, a handsome, middle-aged man wearing glasses and casual clothes pulled out a cigarette case atop a building ten kilometers from the Naruse residence.
”How sharp,” Jin muttered, his tone neutral and composed. “I was nearly discovered.”
Jin lit his cigarette with a wry smile, acting as if he had not been maintaining a perfect distance from Aki’s detection range all along.
Exhaling a ring of smoke, he wiped the smile from his face and fell into thought.
His original intent had been to protect the homeless sisters and let Basara become acquainted with his cousins. However, after arriving, he had been unable to find them for quite some time, only to discover that Mio’s adoptive parents had been captured instead.
Just as Jin was about to intervene, he noticed the disturbance caused by Mio and Maria.
Out of curiosity, he continued to observe in silence, only letting his guard slip slightly when he saw Aki preparing to teleport away.
That single lapse had nearly exposed him.
(So, they’ve made contact with the Gremory family…)
Jin recognized Aki the moment he saw him.
Even though Wilbert was dead, many demons remained staunch supporters of his bloodline. Whether it was Zogil’s assassination attempts or the intelligence Aki possessed, those supporters had been the ones to notify Jin.
”That’s fine, then,” Jin remarked, his voice steady. “Those people won’t dare act recklessly in Kuoh Town. Well, it seems my son and I will have to move again.”
Jin knew about the relationship between Wilbert and the Gremory family, so he did not intend to intervene by force.
At the same time, he was aware of the Gremory family’s current situation and could not feel entirely at ease leaving everything to a group of youngsters.
In the end, he decided to move in with Basara.
While Jin was making his decision, Aki was considering a similar problem.
After teleporting back to the Occult Research Club, Aki watched as Asia’s healing took effect. Mio’s parents soon regained consciousness.
The warmth and harmony of their reunion after such a close brush with death went without saying.
However, for safety’s sake, it would be best for them to remain hidden until the Three Factions Talk1 concluded and Zogil was thoroughly dealt with.
The same applied to Mio.
With her potential, she would soon be able to handle ordinary pursuers after some dedicated cultivation.
Her parents, however, were not so fortunate. A single low-level Devil could easily take their lives.
Furthermore, while Mio alone would not be a problem, the villa already had limited space, and neither Aki nor the girls were particularly enthusiastic about her parents staying there.
Age was one factor.
The greater issue was the gap in strength and status.
Whether it was Mio or Maria, their bloodlines were noble, and their potential was immense.
It sounded cold, but that was the Underworld—or perhaps that was simply how realistic this world was.
As for Aki, he simply did not want any more men living in the villa.
If it had only been Mio’s mother, that would have been a different matter.
That Devil housewife had top-tier looks and a figure to match, but… cough.
The couple’s bond was strong, and keeping her around would not improve anyone’s strength.
Aki decided to be the good guy and extinguished those wicked thoughts.
Mindful of Mio’s feelings, the group did not broach the topic too bluntly.
It was only after she confirmed her lineage with her parents that they carefully suggested sending the two of them to the Gremory family in the Underworld.
Despite the Gremory family’s decline, they still had many servants. Mio’s parents could conceal their identities there and guarantee their safety.
The Naruses had no objections.
Before coming to the Human World, they had, in fact, been Wilbert’s servants.
In a sense, they were simply returning to their old duties.
Mio was reluctant to part with her parents, but she knew it was the right choice.
(As expected of the lead heroine of a New Sister story.)
Aki silently admired the twin-tailed, busty schoolgirl as she bid her parents an emotional farewell.
(Apart from the tsundere, erotic vibes, she’s practically a dream-level goddess. No, the tsundere and lecherous traits just add to the score. A dream-level goddess turned into a real, cute schoolgirl.)
With the Naruses sent off, the next matter was Mio and Maria.
Maria was a different case.
She looked even younger than Koneko, but that was merely the form she took because of a seal.
Aki glanced at the choker around the succubus girl’s neck, his mind automatically conjuring the image of her tall, mature form once the seal was released.
(Lolis are fine, but I definitely prefer the mature type.)
Especially high-class ones wearing black silk, with long, elegant legs.
Maria’s mission was half-finished.
From here, she only needed to stay by Mio’s side until the Three Factions Talk ended, then return to the Underworld with Shela and join the Gremory family.
Mio was more troublesome.
Having grown up in the Human World, she would certainly not adapt to the Underworld overnight.
She had already said that she did not want to get involved in the Underworld’s messy affairs, but her powers had awakened. With Zogil still coveting that strength, returning to a truly ordinary life was impossible.
Ultimately, Mio decided to transfer to Kuoh Academy.
She would continue her high school life while training hard to cultivate and master the formidable power within her.
As for housing, there were plenty of empty rooms in the villa, so she and Maria moved in that very night.
Daily necessities and clothing could be supplemented slowly, and the expense was negligible for the Gremory family.
Because of their connection to the previous generation and this rescue mission, Mio’s relationship with the group had improved considerably.
Perhaps it was also due to the new environment. The Occult Research Club was the first social group she had encountered here.
In short, the twin-tailed tsundere schoolgirl quickly blended into the club’s atmosphere.
Aside from changing schools and residences, her life largely returned to what it had been before.
The day after Mio transferred, Rias returned from the Underworld.
She had already spoken with the Naruses there and had a rough understanding of what had happened.
With the Rating Game approaching, she did not have the time or energy to dwell on Mio’s situation. After a brief introduction, she went straight to business.
”In three days, at ten o’clock at night, the Rating Game will begin,” Rias said, her tone professional and direct. “The location is Kuoh Academy. The broadcast preparations are already complete. Now we must finalize the participant list.”
To prevent casualties, the higher-ups had replicated a special pocket dimension to serve as the battlefield.
The situation inside would be broadcast to the Underworld.
The winner would see their rank and status rise and would attract the attention of the higher-ups.
This was not a standard match.
High-ranking figures in the Underworld would be watching, including Rias’s brother, the Demon King Sirzechs.
”Buchou,” Aki asked, his brow furrowed, “did you find a suitable contract?”
Rias was listing the roster without mentioning his contract.
As expected, she shook her head regretfully.
”There was too little time. I couldn’t find a suitable contract.”
As fellow members of the Four Great Devil families, finding a contract capable of deceiving the Phoenix family was no simple matter.
Especially at a time like this, when the other side would certainly scrutinize every detail.
”Aki-chan, don’t worry,” Rias added, her voice softening slightly. “I can’t guarantee victory, but I have an eighty percent chance of success.”
An eighty percent chance was significant.
One could almost call it certain.
But this concerned Rias’s lifelong happiness, and Aki did not want to leave any unstable factors.
More importantly, the faint unease in his heart seemed to be warning him of something.
If the world line had not changed too drastically, Riser’s peerage consisted mostly of A-rankers, with perhaps only his Queen, Yubelluna, and his Bishop, Ravel, possessing S-rank strength.
Riser himself was likely a High-Class Devil, or at best, Ultimate-Class.
However, the opponent had numbers, experience in Rating Games, the Phoenix bloodline, and possibly hidden trump cards.
Just as Aki was lost in thought, a cute, childish voice piped up.
”Umm…”
The small, adorable succubus stood on her tiptoes and raised one hand, trying to catch everyone’s attention.
”I don’t really understand this ‘contract’ thing you’re all talking about,” Maria said with a giggle as everyone turned to look at her. “Eeee! But I do have a family-inherited contract here…”
Rias’s eyes lit up.
She instantly understood what Maria meant.
Even if Maria came from a remote region, after consulting her mother, Rias knew that Shela’s status was not low.
She had once been the Succubus Queen.
Otherwise, Wilbert, a Demon King, would never have been with her.
This so-called family-inherited contract was very likely a unique method passed down through that succubus lineage.
If so, there was a high chance it could deceive the Rating Game supervisors and the Phoenix family.
In contrast to Rias’s pleasant surprise, Aki was momentarily stunned.
The succubus girl’s comment had triggered his memory of a crucial event in Shinmai Maou.
As fellow demons connected to a Demon King, master-servant contracts were a major narrative thread in that series.
(I never expected that contract to be a family heirloom… No wonder I haven’t seen anyone else use it.)
