Volume 3 Chapter 8 Preparations
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
It was on Sunday, November 1st, that a clerk from the Academy came to my house.
The war had begun on the Western Front, he informed me. An emergency faculty meeting had been called, and I was expected to attend.
I set out by carriage, but because of the outbreak of hostilities, the checkpoint at the inner wall was completely congested. In the end, I got down partway and made the rest of the journey to the Academy on foot.
Even though it was a holiday, the office beside the main gate was still operating. Once the staff recognized me, they directed me toward the conference room in the central building.
I had expected chaos when I arrived, but the atmosphere inside was surprisingly calm.
The Academy President was already seated at the head of the table. The professors from Medical Magic had gathered in full force and were chatting among themselves as though this were any ordinary day. Only Professor Karl was nowhere to be seen.
A little later, Elga, the Dean of Simple-type Magic, entered and took the seat beside the President. The professors from the remaining laboratories followed soon after.
Once roughly two-thirds of the seats had been filled, the Academy President rose to his feet.
”My apologies for calling everyone in on a day off,” he said in a businesslike tone. “As many of you have likely already heard, the ceasefire agreement with the Empire of Charle has been nullified. Reports indicate that the defensive line on the Western Front has been breached. Military representatives should arrive shortly to provide a detailed explanation. Before then, I would like everyone to discuss how many medical teams the Academy can realistically dispatch.”
I remembered Professor Karl mentioning that medical teams from the Academy were already operating in South Bohemia and the Straba Province.
Even while the President spoke, the professors of Medical Magic continued exchanging jokes and idle remarks.
For a moment, I seriously questioned whether they were all sane.
I had always suspected their detachment bordered on abnormal, but this was beyond anything I had imagined.
Just then, the door near the head of the table opened.
A stocky officer in military uniform entered alongside several subordinates. The Academy President stood immediately and greeted him with a handshake.
”You’re early.”
Hearing a familiar voice, I turned.
Professor Lizabel had arrived and was taking the seat beside mine.
”I had to walk from the checkpoint,” I replied.
”So youth still has its advantages,” she said.
”The room is awfully calm,” I remarked. “Shouldn’t everyone be more concerned?”
”They’ve seen this sort of thing before,” she answered. “And to be honest, they usually know what’s happening before the rest of us.”
I had heard rumors about activity on the Western Front.
Still, with conflict brewing in the east and now war erupting in the west, I would have expected widespread panic.
I’d even assumed the congestion at the checkpoint had been caused by frightened citizens.
”Please give us your attention.”
The Academy President raised his voice.
”Lieutenant Colonel Helbert of the Royal Army General Staff, Director of the Military Equipment Bureau Laboratory, will now explain the current situation and relay the Army’s requests.”
Standing to the President’s right, Lieutenant Colonel Helbert gave a brief bow.
”I am Lieutenant Colonel Helbert. My duties within the Royal Army include intelligence gathering and logistical procurement.”
His manner was rigid and formal.
It was completely different from how he acted at Adolf’s shop.
”As most of you know, there are currently two fronts along the western border.
”The first is the First Front, stretching approximately one hundred fifty kilometers along the Meuse River through the Urtemis Plateau. East of that river lies Lothringen, the territory His Majesty first received when he was granted the rank of Count. Our strongest forces are stationed there.
”The second is the Second Front, a twenty-kilometer sector located at the southern edge of Alsace Province between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains.”
”Which front has fallen?”
Professor Meinhardt of First Medical Magic asked with open disdain.
”The Second Front,” Helbert replied. “Schiltheim has been lost.”
I wasn’t familiar with the area’s geography.
Even so, the room immediately grew tense.
”What exactly does that mean? If Schiltheim has fallen, doesn’t that leave the First Front vulnerable to being outflanked?”
”How was this not predicted? Isn’t that a failure of military intelligence? Who is responsible?”
”The military is incompetent!”
The accusations came one after another.
Lieutenant Colonel Helbert remained expressionless.
Only after the room had quieted again did he continue.
”If I may proceed, the Royal Army has come to deliver a request.”
He paused briefly.
”Or rather, a command from His Majesty directed to the Magic Academy.”
The wording alone was enough to provoke further irritation.
”We require the immediate dispatch of two medical teams. We also require the mobilization of fifty students to the Arsenal Bureau, two hundred Giant Amber charges, and three pilots together with maintenance personnel for fixed-wing drones.”
”Ridiculous! We already have teams in South Bohemia and Straba. Do you intend to strip the capital of its medical services?”
”And what about the students? Their education is our responsibility!”
”The military is incompetent!”
As expected, the protests only grew louder.
Helbert waited patiently until the noise died down.
”The Kingdom is in danger.”
His voice lowered.
The room gradually fell silent.
”Allow me to explain.”
Everyone listened.
”At present, the enemy has captured only Schiltheim. Their advance force is still approximately fifty kilometers from the Danube.”
”What are you trying to say?”
”It is already November. Rain and snow will soon arrive.”
”You think they’ll retreat?”
”No.”
Helbert shook his head.
”Before winter comes, they intend to accomplish a specific objective.”
His gaze swept across the assembled professors.
”Their objective is to plunder the Royal Capital.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The memory of the Haritz Rebellion on August 6th was still fresh in everyone’s mind.
The looting.
The fires.
The destruction within the Royal Capital.
”How can you possibly know that?”
”The trigger for this invasion was the independent action of a mercenary force.”
”Are you saying the Empire of Charle bears no responsibility?”
”They did formally notify us of the ceasefire’s termination. However, that notification arrived half a day after the Second Front had already been breached. It was merely a diplomatic formality.”
Helbert explained that the mercenaries involved were heavily influenced by the Fourth Martyr Army.1
The original Martyr Army had been formed from knights and soldiers who sought to reclaim holy lands from the Turkic Empire.
Although the earlier expeditions achieved only limited success, the Fourth Army had gone further.
Rather than fighting the Turkic Empire, they had attacked Byzantium itself—the capital of the East Rome Empire and the seat of the Pope of the Jesus Orthodox Church.
Though the empire had declined, the city remained immensely wealthy and filled with priceless art and treasures.
The participants had looted it thoroughly and returned home rich beyond imagination.
After witnessing that success, the remnants of the Martyr Army sought to repeat it.
With the Kingdom preoccupied by affairs in the east, they had set their sights on Sorsaburg, the Royal Capital of Schuberitz.
”They have no intention of occupying territory,” Helbert said. “Their goal is simple. They intend to loot, pillage, and destroy everything in their path. Before winter arrives, they want to strip this capital bare.”
Even the usually arrogant professors of Medical Magic looked shaken.
”And what exactly are we supposed to do?”
”The enemy force numbers approximately fifteen thousand infantry.”
The figure was staggering.
Count Straba’s army had consisted of ten thousand men.
This force was fifty percent larger.
And if they were seasoned veterans from the Western Front, the situation would be even worse.
”What about our own strength?”
”We are currently mobilizing. At present, we have roughly six thousand men.”
”Can that possibly be enough?”
”That,” Helbert replied, “is why I am here.”
By the time the meeting ended, the Academy had little choice but to accept the Army’s demands.
Afterward, I met privately with Lieutenant Colonel Helbert and Elga.
”The maximum operating range of the current fixed-wing drones is five hundred meters,” I explained. “Allowing for a four-hundred-meter safety margin, I’d have to remain practically on the front lines in order to fly them directly over the enemy.”
”What are you getting at?”
”I’m affiliated with the military and I’ve served in the militia before. I can accept the risk. But is it really appropriate to send students into that situation?”
”Did you not listen to the briefing?” Helbert replied. “If we fail to stop them, this city will fall. People will die. We cannot allow another Henrietta.”
The mention of Henrietta immediately silenced me.
Unable to argue, I turned to my last remaining option.
”Can you give me three days?”
”No.”
His answer came instantly.
”The location of the decisive battle has already been determined. We leave tomorrow at noon. Make sure your preparations are complete by then.”
His tone carried none of the familiarity I had known before.
Now he sounded every bit the superior officer.
”What if I could extend the drone range to three kilometers?”
Elga’s eyes widened.
Even Helbert paused.
But after a moment, he shook his head.
”We are outnumbered. The reconnaissance capabilities your drones provide are essential right now. Without them, defeat is inevitable. We cannot afford to wait three days.”
He spoke with absolute certainty.
Not about victory.
About defeat.
The situation was truly that dire.
”When will the battle take place?”
”In three days. At the Hoyt Wetlands.”
Helbert folded his arms.
”Our opponent is Geklan of the Landon Mercenary Company. He is a renowned tactician. If he falls, the enemy force will collapse into a disorganized mob.”
So the drones were meant to find him.
”I understand.”
”Why do you need three drones?” I asked.
”There’s a strong possibility the enemy will divide their forces between land and water routes. We also require backups.”
Backups.
For the drones.
And, no doubt, for the people operating them.
I already understood how cheaply human lives were treated during wartime, but hearing it stated so plainly left a bitter taste in my mouth.
”In that case, I have several conditions of my own.”
”Go ahead.”
”I need a large carriage suitable for field operations. It must be capable of carrying three drones and provide enough room to work.”
”Understood. One will be waiting at the Academy entrance tomorrow at noon.”
”I’ll also be bringing several companions. They aren’t pilots or maintenance personnel, but they’ll accompany me.”
”Your slaves?”
”Yes.”
I nodded.
”I can’t leave Kenze and the others behind. Besides, if I die, they’re capable of escaping on their own. I don’t expect them to be killed.”
”And Dean Elga.”
”What is it?”
”I need one research student capable of piloting drones, as well as two Academy Golems.”
”Understood. I’ll have the student and the Golems prepared by noon tomorrow.”
I nodded.
Then one final thought occurred to me.
”Lieutenant Colonel Helbert.”
”What?”
”How does one write a will?”
Helbert looked exhausted.
His eyes were half-closed as though sleep might claim him at any moment.
Still, he answered.
”First, choose an executor. Write down the date, the executor’s name, and instructions regarding your assets. Then add your signature and the signatures of witnesses. Place everything inside an envelope, write ‘Last Will’ and the executor’s name on the front, seal it with wax, and you’re done. Use parchment and Magic Ink.”
”I see.”
”If you’re writing it now,” I said, “I’ll serve as a witness.”
”Fine.”
After leaving the room, I made my way to the office.
Once the parchment, Magic Ink, and the other materials I needed had been brought in, I took a seat and immediately began drafting my will.
I appointed Marie Novakova as the executor. As for the blueprints, I decided to donate them to the state. If too much wealth ended up flowing into the Getys House, it would likely cause more problems than it solved. I also left ten million yen each to my eldest son, Reinhardt, my eldest daughter, Angelica, and the children Nico and Louise would soon have.
The house in the Royal Capital, along with my two slaves, Pamela and Kenze, would go to Marie. In time, I wanted her to free both of them, as well as Kenze’s child.
Whatever money remained after that—probably not much—was to be divided between necessary expenses and the house back in the village. After Pamela, Kenze, and the child were freed, that money was to be handed over to them as well.
As I worked through the document, two of the Lieutenant Colonel’s subordinates appeared in the hallway, having finished whatever business had brought them here.
”That should do it.”
I handed the completed will to the Lieutenant Colonel. After reviewing it, he signed as a witness, with Helbert Ougen-Sigmund adding his signature alongside him.
”You’re really donating those blueprints to the country?” he asked.
”I’ve got a bad feeling about what would happen if too much money ended up in the village. Besides, if I make it back alive, I’ll tear them up myself. I have no intention of dying because of some nonsense excuse like ‘fiscal difficulties.’”
”I see. Yeah, I can understand that.”
The Lieutenant Colonel nodded.
”Well, I’m pressed for time.”
Without warning, he snapped his heels together and straightened his posture. Despite his stocky build, the movement was astonishingly sharp. A moment later, he raised his hand in a flawless salute.
I returned the salute Louise had taught me.
It felt a little unlike me to get swept up in the moment like this, but after lowering my hand, I reached out and shook his.
”When I get back, let’s stop by Adolf’s shop.”
”On the Lieutenant Colonel’s tab?” he said with a grin.
”I’ll submit it as an expense.”
”Understood.”
The same inscrutable smile I’d always known rested on the old man’s face.
I watched him leave the office before folding the will, slipping it into an envelope, and pressing a wax seal onto it.
”Let’s hope this doesn’t end up becoming a death flag.”
After signing the front, I tucked it into my pocket.
As I stepped out of the office after thanking everyone, the very people I least wanted to run into came through the entrance.
”Professor, why are you trying to leave your attendants behind?”
The first to charge at me was the elf mage, Tura.
Katrina immediately followed with complaints of her own, while Pamela and Kenze stood behind them wearing knowing smiles.
”My bad, my bad. Anyway, there’s something I need to tell all of you, but first I have to go see Marie.”
”We can’t come with you?”
”I’ve got something personal to discuss. Sorry, but could you head to the laboratory and prepare some thin graphite sheets for me?”
I promised I’d return afterward.
”Are you… going to the battlefield?”
The moment I assured them I’d definitely come back, Pamela’s instincts apparently picked up on it.
”Yeah. There’s something I need to discuss with you about that too, but let me speak with Marie first. Just wait a little longer.”
Leaving the four of them behind as they exchanged uneasy glances, I headed toward the rest facility.
Those four were the people I intended to take with me to the battlefield.
If possible, I would have liked to bring Rosa as well. She was a genius, after all. Unfortunately, she was still only fourteen and technically a student, so I had no choice but to leave her behind.
Larry was the same age, but well… I might have the body of a young man, yet the heart inside me was still that of an old one.
When I arrived at the facility, my eldest daughter, Ange, was asleep.
As a result, only Marie came out to greet me.
The two of us walked together through the garden.
”You really need to stop joking around.”
The smile she’d worn when she first saw me disappeared the moment I handed her the will.
Her expression darkened immediately.
”I’m heading to the battlefield. Anyone in my position would do the same. Everything happened so suddenly, and you’re the only person I trust to leave this with.”
”In that case, I’m taking all your property for myself, yeah?” she snapped.
”That’s not happening. Helbert and the Lieutenant Colonel already signed as witnesses.”
”You idiot. Like I’d actually do something like that.”
Marie was more sensible than people gave her credit for.
I knew perfectly well that she didn’t mean it. The words had simply come from frustration. She probably didn’t know what else to say.
”Is it true?” she asked after a while. “The Empire of Charle is attacking?”
Silence lingered between us for several moments before she finally spoke again.
”Yeah.”
”And they’re advancing straight toward the Royal Capital without occupying the towns on the way?”
”That’s right.”
”And you’re going to stop them, yeah?”
”Yeah. I’m going to crush them.”
”You know me well enough by now. Don’t go saying something that arrogant.”
Perhaps she was remembering Barsheni Village and the Battle of Vod Fortress.
”That’s a pretty harsh thing to say.”
A faint smile appeared on Marie’s lips.
I explained that I intended to bring the research students capable of operating the fixed-wing drones, along with Pamela and Kenze.
Marie hadn’t spent much time with Kenze, but she trusted her abilities. Hearing she’d be accompanying us seemed to put her somewhat at ease.
”So you’ll be leaving the facility soon,” I continued. “Until things settle down, could you and Ange stay here?”
”How long?”
”According to the Lieutenant Colonel, until winter. He thinks the enemy will retreat once the snow and rain begin.”
”So about a month.”
Marie nodded.
”I heard you can extend your stay here under special circumstances for roughly that long. There are plenty of vacant rooms right now, so it shouldn’t be a problem.”
That was the main reason I’d come.
After saying everything I needed to say, I turned to leave.
”You’re forgetting something.”
Marie grabbed my wrist.
”What?”
”Right here.”
Closing her eyes, she pursed her lips.
”There are people watching.”
”Who cares? If you disappear again for who knows how long, I’ll just end up regretting it later. So hurry up.”
I didn’t really have any room to argue.
The moment I leaned in, she wrapped her arms tightly around me.
Well, I had expected as much.
I embraced her just as firmly in return.
When our lips finally parted, our cheeks brushed together, and the shortened strands of Marie’s hair grazed my skin.
”Marie.”
”Hm?”
”Could you give me a little of your hair?”
”What are you planning to do with that?”
”I’ll keep it as a charm.”
* * *
Aftert that, I returned to the lab and asked the four of them if they wanted to come with me to the battlefield. No one refused.
I was especially relieved that Pamela and Kenze said yes, as I had expected a 50/50 chance they would refuse.
Afterward, I did some preparations for tomorrow in the lab, and then, feeling apologetic, I took Pamela and Kenze to the men’s dormitory to take a bath before returning home.
I called the Bondservants to the dining room, told them I was going to war, and also informed them that if I died, a student from the Magic Academy named Marie would take over.
They asked a couple of questions about it, but after all, they were Bondservants who had previously served different masters.
They were quite nonchalant about it.
The rest was preparation at home.
I decided to take a change of clothes, combat sandals, and the pump circuit removed.
Since it uses a lot of Magic capacitors and Magic Diodes, I could use them as spare parts. The next morning, I headed to school in a carriage coached by the taciturn servant, Helf.
Come to think of it, I hadn’t said hello to Ariane-neesan.
Oh well, I’ll go when I get back.
