My group finally had its main members assembled for dungeon training, but we needed to settle one important matter first.
We had to establish our internal hierarchy clearly. Once we set the rankings, the rules for every situation inside and outside the dungeon would become obvious. When powerful Apparitions appeared, the order would decide who stepped forward to fight, who covered the retreat, and even simple things like seating at meals or the exact order in which members received the leader’s favor.
According to a survey of National High students who had gone through dungeon training, settling the hierarchy was the undisputed number one priority before entering a dungeon.
Three days after our first four-person session, we returned to the Guidance Facility. Matches offered a fair way to decide the rankings. Risa and Yurina had already agreed that Risa stood above Yurina, so their positions were settled. Today the main event would be the fight between Chifumi and Risa. I also decided to spar with Yurina while we were there.
As a side note, most groups held ranking matches again from time to time even after the first setup. Some did it monthly, others once a semester, or every six months. For us, a semester cycle with extra challenges when needed would be enough.
Most groups also followed the rule that only the top-ranked member could challenge the leader, much like a professional shogi title match. Of course, a member who had already been rated before joining had almost no chance of beating the leader. The others did not seriously expect a coup either. After the initial setup, challenging the leader simply became a way to earn special pampering from the leader in the Guidance Room as a reward.
The first match was between me and Yurina. It ended quickly. There was no way Yurina, who ranked below both Chifumi and Risa, could defeat me. Before the fight Chifumi had tried to order Yurina not to win, but I stopped her. I saw no possibility of losing, so I saw no need for such precautions. Instead I told Yurina to give it everything she had. I wanted to feel her full-power Severing Sorcery—the same one she had used to cut a magically reinforced staff and the sorcery itself during her earlier match with Chifumi.
From the moment she took her First-Push stance with her blade ready, I could tell she had grown stronger than during our Zero-Limit session. Even so, her level still did not reach the domain of a Majin. I met her full-power strike with a defensive sorcery. The barrier received a cut but held firm. Even after she struck two or three more times, the result stayed the same.
This proved one clear fact: I could block her attacks head-on. That alone confirmed the Risa > Yurina ranking, since Risa’s rifle could pierce my defensive sorcery.
Next I summoned Hinoki to test the hardness of their jaw. The result was a draw. The blade did not break, and Hinoki’s jaw remained intact.
”Whoa!? That’s hard~!” Hinoki said, wiggling their countless legs in delight.
”Even though I’m weakened, a blade that can’t even break my jaw is a pretty damn good sword.”
”What about the sorcery?”

That was their assessment.
Finally I readied a magic pistol I had borrowed from Risa—the high-powered type. Yurina could not keep up with the rapid fire. The moment I aimed properly, I shot the sword from her hand. Before the fight could turn into an unarmed brawl, I pressed the muzzle to her face, and Yurina surrendered. The entire match took less than five minutes from start to finish.

With the internal hierarchy decided, our future way of operating became clear. I would set the overall policy, Chifumi would assist me and create concrete plans, and Risa and Yurina would carry them out. It felt like a university laboratory—a professor, an assistant, and the students. That thought stirred up some unpleasant memories.
After we cleaned up and left the Guidance Facility, the next group was already waiting. It was Komoda-kun.
