Volume 2 Chapter 7 Rank ① is the Leader’s Secretary

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Stepping through the rippling, liquid wall of the portal, we left our very first Simulated Dungeon trial behind us. Once I confirmed everyone in our group was safely out, I tapped my Student ID against the console of the Dungeon Generator. With a faint hum, the undulating black barrier we had just emerged from vanished into thin air.

From here on out, scanning my ID would allow me to summon this specific dungeon and resume our exploration right where we left off. The card was essentially our save data.

The hardware had a hard cap on how many instances it could run simultaneously. While we were given priority access during our two weekly practical exam periods, using the simulators during after-school hours required a reservation—the exact same setup as the Guidance Facility. Each booking topped out at a maximum of three hours.

Looking around, about half of the groups from the other classes had already made it back. The interior of the training hall was starting to get a little crowded.

A few minutes later, Ryota-kun finally emerged. All six members of his squad looked completely unscathed. After wiping his own portal terminal, he caught my eye and strolled over.

”Hey, Minoru! Good job out there,” Ryota-kun said, throwing out a casual wave.

”You too,” I replied with a nod. “How’d your first real dungeon crawl treat you? Did you manage to clear the first floor?”

”Man, dungeons are wild. The whole experience felt totally surreal,” Ryota-kun said, stretching his arms toward the ceiling. “We actually found the stairs and stepped onto the second floor right as our time ran out, so we had to turn back. How did it go on your end?”

”Impressive. We haven’t even spotted our staircase yet. Just how fast were you guys moving?”

”Honestly, I think our pace was pretty average,” Ryota-kun reasoned, shrugging. “We just got super lucky… or rather, our layout was incredibly straightforward.”

”Straightforward?” I echoed, tilting my head.

Ryota-kun crossed his arms, pondering for a moment before answering. “It was an Open-Field type. The zone I dropped into felt exactly like a massive forest. It was impossible to tell where the actual paths were, but the trees were spaced far enough apart, the undergrowth was short, and best of all, there were zero bugs. That part was a lifesaver.”

”Huh. Must be nice,” I sighed. “Ours was a Labyrinth-type. Basically looked like the inside of a gigantic school building. We spent the whole time looping between identical hallways and classrooms.”

”Yeah, pulling a school layout makes finding the exit a total nightmare,” Ryota-kun agreed. “In my zone, the staircase was literally a colossal tree towering all the way into the clouds. If you looked up past the canopy, you could see it from anywhere. All we had to do was hike straight toward it.”

”Gotcha. So even for a Simulated Dungeon, the environments can vary wildly.”

 ”Seriously,” Ryota-kun muttered.

As we wrapped up our conversation, the remaining boys from our class finally trickled out of their respective gates. With every group accounted for, our instructor spoke up to gather everyone.

”Alright, let’s head back to the classroom,” Tamai-sensei said.

”Okay~!” the class chimed back in unison.

We followed Tamai-sensei’s instructions and moved back to the main building. The other two groups didn’t seem to have run into any major issues either. All things considered, our initial dungeon training had concluded without a hitch.

When I slid the classroom door open, I found the three unassigned girls sitting at their desks, passing the time with self-study. As we walked in, each of them cast a calculating, appraising look in our direction.

These three didn’t possess the raw social dominance to band together and launch a coordinated operation like Risa and Yurina. Instead, they felt like a collection of misfits who had missed their window—the classic “failed high school debut” squad.

Today was the day the entire first-year pool underwent their initial dungeon training, making it the absolute best opportunity to market oneself. If a shorthanded group had struggled during the practical exercise, these girls might have been scouted just to fill out the numbers. It made perfect sense why they kept stealing furtive glances at our party.

Unfortunately for them, our group hadn’t struggled much at all. While the fight against the anatomical model would have been too much for Risa and Yurina to handle alone, that thing had been an anomaly. When it came to standard Apparitions, the two of them had exorcised them with absolute confidence and zero signs of danger.

(As far as clearing Simulated Dungeons goes, we’ll be completely fine with just the four of us.) That was my primary takeaway from today’s exercise.

Once the practical session wrapped up, each group was required to compile and submit a training log. Chifumi-san had already handled the bulk of the paperwork, so I quickly skimmed through the details. Finding no issues, I left the three girls behind in the classroom and headed toward the faculty room to find Tamai-sensei. Submitting the log was the leader’s responsibility, after all.

When I handed the document over to Tamai-sensei, he paused and looked up from his desk. “Are you sure you don’t want to request a Guidance Room for today?”

”No, we’ll pass for today,” I answered cleanly.

”Really? Your group only has four members, Tatemiya-kun, so there are plenty of vacant rooms available,” Tamai-sensei noted, offering a gentle smile.

”We prefer to conduct our combat review after we get home.”

”I understand. Make sure to stay safe on your way back,” Tamai-sensei said, signing off on the logs.

It was common knowledge in this world that after diving into a dungeon, surviving sorcerers were left completely overwhelmed by intense sexual urges. The prevailing theory claimed that staring death in the face triggered a primal, biological drive to preserve the species by leaving behind offspring. However, speaking from personal experience, the actual individuals involved didn’t look at it through such a profound lens. They were just healthy high school students; if given a valid excuse to get laid, they were going to tear each other’s clothes off. Trying to overanalyze it was just missing the point.

Apparently, Ryota-kun and his crew were planning to go a round or two in the Guidance Rooms before heading out. Those six-person spaces were currently operating at full capacity. While there were plenty of smaller rooms to spare, our group prioritized getting off campus as quickly as possible.

I had absolutely no intention of wrapping things up in a brief two-hour window today. If that was the case, it made infinitely more sense to head home, clear our schedules, get our overnight gear ready, and then completely lose ourselves in each other until morning.

”……Hm? Tatemiya-kun?” Tamai-sensei called out, interrupting my thoughts.

The teacher, who had been scanning the log, suddenly looked up with a pointed expression.

”I see a note here about encountering a wandering Apparition that appeared to be an anomaly. Could you tell me a bit more about this entry?” Tamai-sensei asked, tapping the paper.

 ”Yes, sir,” I replied.

”Are you absolutely certain? Was it truly an anomaly?”

”Positive,” I stated neutrally. “We’re still exploring the very first floor. The first floor is only supposed to spawn one specific type of Apparition, correct?”

”Yes, one roaming type and one stationary type per floor,” Tamai-sensei confirmed.

”In that case, the creature we encountered was fundamentally different from the standard roaming type.”

Tamai-sensei narrowed his eyes slightly, pressing further. “It wasn’t just a palette swap or a trick of the light?”

”Not at all. It was an entirely different entity. Both in its physical manifestation and its sheer combat threshold.”

”…Huh. Is that so…” Tamai-sensei murmured, tilting his head. “The generation matrix is calibrated so that the probability of encountering anomalies scales up the deeper you descend into a dungeon. The spawn rate on the first floor should be borderline non-existent… though it isn’t zero, so the possibility remains. Actually, given that you have already evolved into a Majin, Tatemiya-kun, it’s highly likely the Simulated Dungeon Generator evaluated your threat matrix and concluded that scaling up the enemy composition wouldn’t pose a lethal risk to your party.”

Just like that, critical pieces of information—like anomalies scaling with depth, or the system aggressively targeting a Majin—were casually dropped into conversation. If anything, those parameters were a massive headwind for my current party composition. If we were a full-sized group it would be one thing, but we were operating with only four people. Even if we had a fully fledged Witch on our roster, the remaining two were still just frontline rookies.

I felt a sudden urge to voice my grievances to the teacher, but I forced myself to swallow the complaint, knowing our group had handled today’s opponent with room to spare. We could afford to hold off on consulting faculty until our situation grew genuinely dire. After all, the entire purpose of the Simulated Dungeon was to stress-test our strategies and iron out flaws before we tackled the real dungeons in the second semester.

”Well, it looks like you handled the situation perfectly this time. Best of luck with the rest of your practical applications,” Tamai-sensei said, waving me off.

 ”Thank you, sir.”

I bowed in acknowledgment of the teacher’s encouragement and stepped out of the faculty room.

Standing in the hallway was Komoda-kun, holding what looked like his own group’s training log. He noticed me immediately. With only the two of us occupying the corridor outside the faculty room, the atmosphere instantly became incredibly awkward.

 ”Hey there,” Komoda-kun called out.

 ”Oh… hey?” I offered back.

 ”How are things?”

 ”Fine. How about you? …”

I instantly regretted asking. There was no way things were going well for him. The moment the question left my mouth, a wave of self-reproach washed over me. Yet, contrary to my expectations, he had approached me with a bright, refreshing tone that completely caught me off guard.

”Never better,” Komoda-kun replied smoothly, flashing a confident grin. “My group managed to clear the first floor without any issues. Honestly, it was a bit anticlimactic.”

”That’s… great to hear,” I muttered.

”When your Alpha Female is highly capable, commanding the group becomes an absolute breeze.”

 ”Yeah… I bet.”

”My team pulled a Labyrinth-type layout. What did you guys get?”

”Same. A Labyrinth-type… shaped like a school building,” I answered cleanly.

”Huh, is that so? …Oh, my bad. I shouldn’t keep you if you’re in a hurry,” Komoda-kun said, checking his watch before giving me a meaningful look. “Actually, I’ve been wanting to sit down and have a real, proper chat with you sometime soon. Mind if I reach out to you later?”

 ”Uh—”

”See you around then,” Komoda-kun said, stepping past me.

It was a completely ordinary conversation. Before I could even process what was happening, he dictated the entire pace of the exchange, said exactly what he wanted to say, and promptly cut things short.

(Dammit, I should have turned him down right then and there. Had I seriously just let myself get swept up in his lingering handsome-guy aura, despite his fall from grace? My deeply ingrained habit of failing to say a firm “No” in crucial moments had reared its ugly head again. I couldn’t help but feel utterly pathetic.)

By the time I realized I needed to immediately correct course and clarify boundaries, Komoda-kun had already brushed past my shoulder and slid open the door to the faculty room. The door clicked shut behind him, his silhouette shrinking through the frosted glass.

Brushing off the interaction, I quickened my pace back to our classroom. Sliding the door open, I stepped back into the safety of Chifumi-san and the girls’ circle, finally letting out the breath I’d been holding.

”I would be most interested to learn what has transpired to cause you such distress,” Chifumi-san inquired, looking up with a perfectly poised expression.

”…I ran into Komoda in the hallway. He asked if we could grab a drink and talk one-on-one sometime soon,” I explained, leaning against a desk.

”Oh, goodness me… I must firmly advise you against permitting any such engagement,” Chifumi-san responded immediately, her voice carrying a calm, aristocratic weight.

 ”Yeah, that’s what I thought.”

I let out a heavy sigh, which was all Chifumi-san needed to see right through me.

”You found yourself entirely unable to decline his request, did you not? Goodness, Minoru, you really are far too accommodating for your own wellbeing,” Chifumi-san chided, shaking her head gently.

 ”Sorry.”

”Do not distress yourself. I shall personally make contact with their primary Alpha Female and ensure this matter is settled with the utmost discretion. However, you must promise to exercise significantly greater caution in the future,” Chifumi-san insisted, giving me a pointed, authoritative look. “We cannot afford any careless associations.”

”Nah bro, is it really that bad to hang out with a guy just because his squad got completely rolled?” Risa asked, tilting her head. Yurina looked equally curious beside her.

This felt like the perfect opportunity to educate them on the unspoken social hierarchy of sorcerers.

”You must consider the broader implications,” Chifumi-san explained, adopting a precisely measured tone. “At this present juncture, that entire squad is regarded as the absolute nadir of our academic year, entirely because they allowed a male to be overthrown. There is no inherent harm in the Alpha Females maintaining an open dialogue channel with them—that is merely standard diplomatic protocol. However, should Minoru be perceived as familiar or intimately acquainted with a disgraced male, it reflects dreadfully upon our standing. Society will inevitably conclude that Minoru belongs to that exact same unfortunate category.”

”Yeah, that’s actually low-key facts,” Risa muttered, crossing her arms.

”And that is by no means our sole disadvantage,” Chifumi-san continued, her posture perfectly straight and dignified. “Minoru is already navigating a significant deficit in public perception because I remain the only primary Alpha Female contractually bound to his roster. From an external viewpoint, he appears heavily undervalued. The solitary reason our group’s reputation satisfies a respectable baseline is due to his remarkable achievement of evolving into a Majin at such unprecedented speed.”

”And Ryota-kun is associating with me despite that deficit,” I added. “If my social standing plummets, it doesn’t just affect our squad—it actively drags Ryota-kun down and causes trouble for him too. I can’t afford to make careless blunders.”

”And yet, a certain gentleman still managed to commit an exceedingly careless blunder just a moment ago,” Chifumi-san teased, a subtle, elegant smirk playing on her lips.

”Yeah, you’re right. My ears are burning over here…”

As I offered my apology, my mind drifted back to Komoda-kun’s strange demeanor. What was that bizarre sense of misalignment? It wasn’t just because he was the original protagonist of this world. His words, his expressions, and the vibe I picked up from him… something just didn’t add up.

Before I could dig deeper into the mystery, the thought was entirely overwritten by Chifumi-san’s next sentence—a topic that commanded far more of my immediate attention.

”Well, given the administrative complications you have caused, I believe it is only proper that you provide me with an abundance of devotion and indulgence this evening,” Chifumi-san requested smoothly, her refined voice dripping with calm certainty.

”Wait, that’s literally so unfair!” Risa protested, throwing her hands up.

”I am Minoru’s primary Witch, which designates me as his official secretary,” Chifumi-san countered with flawless poise, an undeniable air of noble superiority framing her words. “Since I am the individual tasked with managing the entirety of the tedious administrative burdens for this group, it is only logical that I command the vast majority of the compensation.”

As the three girls bickered back and forth, the remaining squads packed up their belongings and left the room. Soon, the four of us were the only ones left in the quiet classroom.

Risa broke the silence, changing the subject. “No cap though, something is low-key throwing me off about this school.”

 ”What’s that?” I asked.

”Like, for a place that goes out of its way to give us literal smash rooms, the actual campus vibes are straight-up locked down, aren’t they? I haven’t seen a single couple trying to sneak off to get down in an empty classroom or a storage closet. It’s actually crazy.”

Given that Risa still operated under standard civilian common sense, her confusion was entirely warranted. In the civilian world, sneaking away to a secluded spot was the cornerstone of high school romance.

”If anyone was stupid enough to try that here, they would find themselves publicly exposed and shamed by the very next morning,” I explained with a dry laugh. “This is an Elite National Academy for sorcerers, remember? Do you really think they wouldn’t have specialized security wards calibrated to detect sexual activity? Engaging in something like that on school grounds is a surefire way to permanently ruin your life.”

”Wait, for real?” Risa shivered slightly, casting a nervous glance around the empty room. “Does that mean us sitting here talking about this is a bad look too?”

”Not at all. The academy maintains an incredibly powerful surveillance barrier across the entire campus grounds specifically designed to block wiretapping and illicit recording. However, the system is hardwired with a unique caveat: if you engage in sexual acts anywhere outside a designated Guidance Room, that privacy barrier instantly cuts out for your specific location. It’s the academy’s way of saying: revel in your privacy, but if you abuse it, you take full responsibility for the consequences.”

”Wow, that is actually toxic, over-engineered behavior right there,” Risa sighed, completely throwing her hands up.

”Welcome to the world of sorcerers. The rules are always needlessly complex and exhausting.”

Risa let out a dramatic groan, completely abandoning whatever illicit ideas she might have been entertaining. “Well, that hits a wall. There is zero point in hanging around here then. Let’s just pull up to Minoru’s house already.”

Seeing her give up so easily left me feeling a strange mixture of relief and profound disappointment.

According to the memories of my previous life, my entire high school experience had been an absolute desert of endless studying—a thoroughly gray, depressing youth. Slipping away from class to blindly hook up with a gorgeous girl on a stack of gym mats inside a sports warehouse was the ultimate, unattainable fantasy scenario. Since the academy’s automated matrix barred us from executing the real thing on campus, I would just have to find alternative ways to satisfy the urge.

(Like, for example, at my house. Forcing a group of gorgeous high school girls to meticulously recreate a forbidden classroom scenario within the safety of my own bedroom was an inherently redundant, beautifully degenerate act. True eroticism thrived in the details. I couldn’t stop a wicked, involuntary grin from spreading across my face.)

”Wait, did something just hit a low-key devious chord in your mind?” Risa asked, eyeing me with an immediate look of suspicion.

”Master Minoru is definitely plotting something devious…” Yurina murmured, her cheeks flushing slightly as she fidgeted with her hands.

”Now, now, I am entirely certain we shall all discover precisely what he has envisioned for us in due course,” Chifumi-san interrupted gracefully, turning toward the other two with a serene, aristocratic smile. “More importantly, are your travel arrangements and overnight bags thoroughly prepared?”

”Yep! We are straight-up ready,” Risa answered confidently.

”Everything is accounted for on my end as well. What about you, Chifumi-san?” Yurina asked politely.

”I have required everything necessary to be placed in order,” Chifumi-san concluded seamlessly.

While Risa and Yurina continued to look at my expression with a mix of curiosity and bewilderment, Chifumi-san remained perfectly composed, her eyes gleaming with absolute comprehension.

As expected of my number one. She truly was the perfect secretary.

 Summary:

Exiting their first simulated dungeon execution, Minoru locks down their instance data via terminal. Returning to the classroom highlights the widening chasm between active squads and the unassigned student dropouts. An administrative log hand-in reveals a targeted difficulty spike calculated directly from Minoru’s status as an evolved Majin, leaving the party exposed to anomalous threats as they balance fragile peer reputations.

 —

 Trivia:

The dungeon data simulator system sets reservation limits to a maximum window of three hours.

A student’s specific tracking card serves identical functionality to standard electronic save files.

Sorcery users experience massive post-survival arousal stemming from instinctual preservation drives.

Campus surveillance protocols drop all anti-recording fields instantly if students bypass designated facilities.

Minoru’s social standing is penalized because Chifumi is the only primary contracted female currently bound to his roster.

 Translation Notes:

1 “Failed high school debut squad.” A common Japanese subculture trope referring to individuals who tried to completely reinvent their social image, style, or personality upon entering high school but ultimately failed, resulting in social isolation or awkwardness.

2 “That’s true” or “Yeah, I guess.” Minoru responds in a flat, detached katakana-like cadence to humor the conversation without investment, signaling mechanical agreement to avoid deeper social friction.

3 “Primary contract partner” or “Initial Strong-Females.” In the context of this matriarchal world’s power system, the count of primary elite females contractually bound to a male directly dictates his external valuation and political leverage within the academy.

Notes:

• Ryota – A loyal, outgoing male middle schooler in Minoru’s class, he is a well-connected leader who acts as his six-person squad’s spokesperson. Having successfully completed his first simulated dungeon crawl, he serves as a supportive, keen observer of school dynamics. Alongside his social role, he maintains a peculiar, personal fondness for miracle body lines.

• Minoru – Reincarnated from a powerful lineage, this stoic, shock-wielding Majin navigates a world of reversed beauty standards as a calculated high schooler and dungeon administrator. As leader of his exploration squad, he maintains a pragmatic, dominant approach to safety and development, exercising rigid control over his subordinates—including trainee Yurina—through strategic mastery contracts and command-based criteria.

• Tamai – A male instructor at the academy who oversees the school’s dungeon training arena, duel procedures, and training logs. Beyond managing his homeroom students and facilitating their access to guidance facilities, he is responsible for supervising the entire dungeon training process, ensuring safety and academic standards for all participants under his charge.

• Yurina – A beautiful, black-haired swordswoman and disciplined vanguard in Minoru’s group. A skilled user of severing sorcery, she balances a proud, serious combat demeanor with a timid, easily embarrassed nature. Though devoted to Minoru and supported by Chifumi and Risa, she struggles internally with her forced submissive role, constantly battling emotional turmoil beneath her stubborn facade.

• Risa – A sharp-tongued, long-haired gyaru student and skilled dungeon combatant wielding dual magic pistols. Known for her Western cooking and provocative banter, she has transitioned from a prideful, hostile fighter into a submissively devoted follower of Minoru. She balances common-sense pragmatism with enthusiastic participation in brainwashing roleplay, acting out resistance to her master.

• Yuri – A cheerful and energetic first-year student at Higashi High who is a classmate of Shibuya and an acquaintance of Kibe Yurina from their middle school days. A girl known for being aggressive toward Hayato and displaying overt favoritism.

• Chifumi – Minoru’s 15-year-old childhood friend and classmate is a scrawny, long-haired frost/water mage and devoted Majo. Energetic and cat-like, this Takino family member serves as Minoru’s primary Witch and secretary. She balances playful charm and fierce battlefield support with administrative duties, while acting as an affectionate, proactive participant in his harem and a skilled, sharp-tongued mediator.

• Tatemiya – The family name of the protagonist (Minoru), and Kotoha.

• Komoda – Once a high-status leader who commanded a group of five, this handsome student has plummeted to pariah status after a crushing defeat by his own dominant female followers. Now a shell of his former self with lifeless eyes, he serves those he once led. Despite his declining health and current subservience, his past influence continues to complicate his standing within the school’s social hierarchy.
