Volume 3 Chapter 25 Country

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Cold. I woke up to the cheap, flickering lamp—a luxury item in these parts—still burning. When I looked over, I realized that Pamela and Iri had hogged all the blankets. Good grief. Iri’s sleeping posture was atrocious. She did not just sprawl out like a starfish; she slept in a perfect ‘卍’ (manji) shape.1 Even though she was only thirteen, the pale, slender thighs peeking out from under the upturned blanket looked strangely alluring.

”Still, another two years is probably pushing it,” I muttered.

Come to think of it, would her parents really be okay with her not going home? They had basically sold her to me, so I doubted they would get angry. After all, I had only paid the stipend for her labor from the Lord. I straightened the blankets, covered Pamela and Iri again, and crawled into the adjacent bed.

 ”Ice cold!”

That was right. Pamela had had an accident in the middle of our session last night, right in this bed. I had tried to wrap myself in a dry blanket and sleep on the rug, but the floor had sucked the heat right out of my body. In the end, I had returned to their bed and huddled in the corner to catch some sleep.

 ”Guten Morgen.”

I opened my eyes to find Tiele, the steward’s daughter I had been teaching Mana control, standing there with Bernard Saponis, a young boy who had just started manifesting Mana.

Apparently they had heard rumors that the Lord favored us and that we would be staying for a while, so they had come to resume the lessons that had been put on hold. In this town, Pamela and I were responsible for educating these children—along with Iri—in the use of Mana. Tiele was nine years old and the steward’s granddaughter, while Bernard, only eight, was the eldest son of the local town guards. I had not expected the lessons to restart on the very day we returned, so the visit caught me off guard.

”Is it really that time already?”

 ”Yes, it’s past nine.”

Since Tiele’s father served as the Lord’s steward, he spoke the Schweilitz language used for trade. He had been teaching his daughter, and she was already more fluent than Iri.

”My bad, my bad. Last night ran late.”

Which was mostly due to all the explicit activities we had engaged in. I realized too late that Tiele and Bernard had frozen in place. Crap. I was naked, too. Tiele’s gaze had locked onto my morning wood, while Bernard was staring intently at a nude Iri.

”A-ahem. You see, last night we were conducting a top-secret Mana experiment. It’s one of those things you can only do in the nude.”

I ushered them toward the entrance and shooed them outside. In the incredibly awkward aftermath, I cleared my throat and began the usual instruction with Kumite, or sparring.

”Bernard was absolutely fascinated by last night’s ‘top-secret experiment’,” Pamela teased with a grin.

Even though he had not hit puberty yet, he seemed obsessed with the idea of a naked experiment. He was usually such a docile child, but at eight years old, curiosity was only natural. Come to think of it, back in my previous life during my own childhood, I used to walk along the riverbank of the local first-class river with kids like Bernard. For some reason, you would always find books there that you would be too embarrassed to pick up in a real store. Yeah, it was only natural for a boy like him to be curious.

”I told him that even if he can use Mana, the secret must be kept until he undergoes the Coming-of-age ceremony,” I said.

Well, that would probably just fuel his delusions further, but as an adult, I did not have any other answer. Not to mention, the relationship between Iri and Tiele seemed a bit strained. I did not feel it was my place to interfere, but it still bothered me. I had thought that sending Iri to Cain would be the same as offering her up as a hostage and that the steward would never give his permission, but he had agreed without a second thought.

* * *

Morning lessons with the children ended, and in the afternoon Pamela and Iri seemed busy replacing the straw in the beds and doing laundry and other chores. So I headed alone toward the harbor to take a look.

 ”Larry-dono.”

An unfamiliar voice called out to me in Schweilitz.

”May I ask who is calling?”

When I turned around, I saw a stern, bearded middle-aged man I did not recognize.

 ”Antony was in your care.”

It was Antony’s father, the one who had acted as interpreter. If I remembered correctly, he worked in fur processing and sales and traded with Schweilitz, so his speech showed no hesitation.

”Not at all. I was the one who received help.”

”How about it? Were you able to understand my son’s Schweilitz?”

”Of course. There are times when his fluency falters, but it is quite practical.”

”That boy is rather clever, so I plan to have him handle the trading side of the business.”

According to the father, he had raised the eldest son as a craftsman, so he wanted the second son, Antony, to focus on trade and was teaching him Schweilitz for that purpose.

”So, when will you be heading to Cain, sir?”

 Ah, that question.

Thomas had not said exactly when we would return to the country with the Haritz remnants. I figured we could leave the Bryachislavichi port from mid to late March, so leaving here at the end of this month or the beginning of next should be good timing. That meant about another week.

Thomas seemed to want to settle in longer.

”Valfin tribe’s side is mine, and Larry takes the Saami tribe’s side. Let’s adjust things so we don’t fight each other.”

When I had heard those words, I thought they sounded suspicious, and that he actually wanted me to stay longer. So our return date was still unclear.

 ”I still don’t know.”

”I see. Well, there is a rumor that if Larry-dono marries Lady Tiele, the steward’s daughter, and also marries Lady Sanna, the youngest daughter of the late Lord of Kane, then uniting the Valfin tribe and the Saami tribe could create a principality.”

 Huh?

”I, or rather, I am not someone in that kind of position.”

”Not at all. As Master Thomas’s lord, you have achieved wonderful results in this matter, have you not?”

I was starting to see Thomas’s scheme.

In Cain, the girl Sanna surrounded by maids was the youngest daughter of the former lord of Cain. When he had told me to take care of her, he had not meant just daily life. He had meant marriage. Moreover, the source of the rumor the father mentioned was his son who had been in Cain—meaning Thomas. Was the talk of independence actually about me, not Thomas himself?

No, no, no. Wait a minute.

 Let’s think calmly.

Right now the Empire of Rus was being attacked by the Boltechino. The neighboring Polotsk Principality faced the rising Prooton Order to the south. If the Valfin and Saami tribes united and formed a friendly treaty with Schweilitz, the new country might stand secure. It could work.

 The devil’s whisper sounded tempting.

 No, no, no. Bad idea.

The Fourth Sage or that middle-aged man Helbert would definitely try something. First, confirm the rumor’s source.

”Excuse me, may I ask one thing?”

 ”What is it?”

”From whom did you hear about this principality?”

”From my son. He returned from Cain last night.”

No mistake. Thomas had deliberately spread it.

”I see. Well, such a dream story is…”

”It is not a dream story. With the agricultural techniques Master Thomas taught us and the military techniques my son learned, this land could become a fine country in just a few years.”

The middle-aged man spoke with sparkling eyes, but when expectations ran this high, I felt like something important was being overlooked. Besides, this was a plan from Thomas, the so-called muscle-brain. I absolutely should not get involved.

I parted with Antony’s father and headed back toward the house where Pamela and the others were staying. As the gate came into view, a carriage approached from the direction of the lord’s mansion. The coachman wore a proper uniform. It was a one-horse carriage with only a passenger compartment. It stopped right in front of the gate.

 Who could it be?

The carriage door opened, and a woman in a maid’s uniform stepped out. I recognized that uniform. It was the same as those worn by the maids attending the lord’s youngest daughter at Cain’s Viscount’s Palace. She noticed me immediately and bowed deeply.

”I am Katri Orbo, who served as a maid in Lord of Kane’s household.”

She had come to take care of me. And she was not alone. After Katri’s greeting, Manuela, the wife of Marque, and the big-breasted mage who had controlled the golems emerged. Both had their upper bodies bound with ropes over their clothes.

”These are the women allocated to Larry-sama in the recent battle.”

Now that she mentioned it, there had been talk of distributing the women at Cain’s Viscount’s Palace, and orders to take care of them. Taking care of Manuela would get me killed by Marie. Touching the big-breasted mage would probably summon Henrietta-san as a vengeful spirit. Still, why were they bound? Their hands were tied behind their backs, and the ropes squeezed each breast beautifully, especially the big-breasted one, where the intricate binding forced out what would otherwise sag.

The sight reminded me of the SM magazine I had picked up by the riverbank in my previous life as a boy. The shocking two-page spread of an almost naked woman tied with ropes still lingered in my memory. The binding looked very similar.

 ”Who tied them?”

 I asked without thinking.

 ”Of course, it was me.”

Katri answered with a triumphant look.

Chapter illustration

 ”You’re very skilled.”

”It is part of a maid’s repertoire. If you wish, I can show various other variations.”

 She leaned closer and whispered.

So she was offering to join the night duties as a rope master? The excitement from my boyhood stirred again. She tilted her head slightly and smiled sweetly.

So in this other world, such pleasures could become reality. My face almost went slack.

”Um, I am truly sorry, but we would like Iri-sama to go to Cain in our place instead.”

I finally managed to change the subject. Right. If they brought the big-breasted mage, Cain’s town had a golem but no one to operate it.

 ”Iri will probably hate that.”

 ”I suppose so.”

It had ended halfway, after all. That made it even worse.

I led the maids and the two bound women into the house. As expected, Iri hated the idea of going to Cain. Thomas must have anticipated that, because he had prepared conditions: Iri could return here once a week, or I could go to Cain. I was in favor of going to Cain myself, since it would let me discuss our return home with Thomas. However, that plan felt like it would push our return much further into the future.

On top of that, Iri added her own conditions. She suddenly insisted on bringing Pamela, Tiele, and Bernard along as well.

 ”Because we can practice Mana.”

I could understand the reason for it, but Tiele was both the steward’s daughter and the lord’s granddaughter. If anything, the steward—despite his position—looked less like a loyal retainer and more like a doting father throwing a tantrum while the lord worried himself sick.

Pamela kept glancing my way as though she wanted to say something. In the end, however, she merely sighed and held her tongue, as if she had already given up. That night, because the house with the bath did not have enough beds, Pamela and I returned to our old home while Iri went back to her parents’.

”Do you have any intention of becoming the head of a nation?”

It was the first time in a while that we had shared a bed, and the question arrived through telepathy as we lay side by side.

 ”No way in hell.”

”And yet fate seems determined to push you in that direction.”

It was not fate. If anything, it was the road Thomas had laid out. Even so, I understood what she meant.

”If you returned to Schweilitz, what would be waiting for you?”

”The Academy, for one. Maybe a posting to the New Continent.” I paused. “There is also Reinhardt, my sister-in-law’s eldest son, whom I still have not met. Then there is Angelica, Marie’s daughter, and Griselda, Nico’s. I cannot exactly decide never to go back.”

 ”I see.”

”Besides, there are too many obstacles to building a nation here. First, there is the matter of national strength. Even if agriculture succeeds, population growth will take time, and right now this place is far too weak to be called a nation. At the very least, we would need the backing of a power like Rus or Schweilitz.”

”That is true. But you happen to know both an Emperor and a King.”

”I know them, yes, but that does not make them predictable. It would not surprise me if one of them decided to swallow the country whole a few years later.”

”That is possible.” Pamela laughed softly. “Still, give it some thought. If everything falls apart, we can always sneak aboard a Schweilitz merchant ship.”

”Do you actually want me to become that, Pamela? A king or something?”

”Hmm…” A teasing smile touched her lips. “I would not mind if the man who shared my bed rose to that sort of prominence.”

”What kind of logic is that? My life would become a tightrope walk where one mistake means death.”

”Hasn’t it already been like that?”

I had no answer for that.

The conversation drifted after that, and while Pamela continued to tease me about the future, I found myself thinking more seriously than ever about what it really meant for a place to become a nation.

 ”Go and broaden your horizons.”

The lord’s voice echoed through the great hall.

Dressed in a formal gown, Tiele climbed into the carriage at her grandfather’s urging. Bernard looked every bit the son of a noble house, while Pamela’s white Gothic Lolita dress was a rare sight these days. Iri, by contrast, remained in her usual work clothes.

Once they had boarded the carriage that had brought the maids and Manuela, the uniformed coachman flicked the reins and guided it into the swirling snow.

Standing beside me, the steward Rolandas waved with one hand while wiping tears from his eyes with the other. Even Pamela was leaving.

Before I realized it, every person who had accompanied me from Schweilitz had disappeared from my side. As the carriage vanished into the snowfall, an uncomfortable emptiness settled in my chest.

At the lord’s invitation, I headed to the main mansion where he lived with his family.

Apple brandy and grilled whale meat rehydrated from salt preservation awaited me there—about the finest hospitality one could expect this season.

”It has likely reached your ears already,” the lord began. “If you were to marry Tiele, whom you just sent off, and also marry the youngest daughter of Lomas Cain, would you be willing to help build this land into a nation?”

 Rolandas translated the lord’s words.

”Could you give me some time to think about it?”

I decided to postpone my answer until spring had fully arrived.

Afterward, the steward explained that he would be departing for Bryachislavichi Port the next day to inform the authorities that the Prooton Order had crossed their territory before attacking us. It was not a formal protest so much as a request that they take steps to prevent it from happening again.

”This is not exactly related, but I have received an order from Thomas-dono for agricultural tools and seeds. They are to be delivered to a shop called Schweilitz Products.”

”In that case, I would like to send a letter as well. Could you deliver it to the same place?”

 ”A letter?”

The steward’s expression tightened slightly. Perhaps he suspected I was secretly coordinating with Schweilitz.

To be fair, he would not have been entirely wrong.

I intended to ask Captain Aslan Gar, Chief of the Arsenal Bureau, for two Model-98 Golems equipped with remote-control functions, along with four maintenance packs. It was a ridiculous request, so I explained it openly before anyone could grow suspicious.

If he still remembered who I was, there was a chance he would pass the request along to Lieutenant Colonel Helbert—the Fourth Sage—or perhaps even the king himself.

A single Model-98 could have swept aside the heavy cavalry we fought the other day. With remote control, its operating range would extend to five hundred meters, allowing the operator to remain at a safe distance. In that case, I could even let Iri handle one without worrying.

”It is a long shot,” I admitted, “but if they agree, I think it would be safe to assume Schweilitz intends to support us.”

”Would that not place you in direct opposition to the Empire of Rus?”

”I do not think so. If anything, they might ask us for military assistance someday. Besides, if the prospect of founding a nation becomes realistic, I intend to write to the Emperor as well. For better or worse, I do happen to know Emperor Fyodor III.”

The moment I mentioned knowing the Emperor personally, both the lord and the steward stared at me in shock.

Given that I had once been a hostage, I doubted I had left him with a particularly favorable impression.

I had always assumed this situation was another of Thomas’s schemes, yet perhaps Pamela had been right.

Maybe fate had a hand in it after all.

”Welcome back,” Katri greeted me at the entrance.

 ”I’m back.”

 ”Shall I prepare a bath?”

Despite the early hour, the offer sounded wonderfully appealing. After everything that had happened—and after a sleepless night spent thinking about the future—I felt exhausted.

”That sounds nice. I’d like to relax for a while.”

”Understood. By the way, would you like someone to accompany you?”

I glanced toward Manuela and the mage standing behind her near the entrance before shaking my head.

 ”I’ll pass.”

Right now, all I wanted was a quiet bath followed by a long stretch in bed.

”By the way, are you keeping them tied up the entire time?” I asked.

Both women were bound around the upper body just as they had been yesterday. According to Katri, however, they were only restrained during the day. There was little risk of escape, and the arrangement was apparently being maintained for my benefit.

 That seemed unnecessary.

Curious, I stepped closer and examined Katri’s handiwork.

The knots were expertly done. There was no slack anywhere, and the bindings looked secure without being careless.

As I reached out to inspect the rope, my hand brushed against the mage’s.

The moment it did, I accidentally read her thoughts.

 Her name was Pia Spitz.

So, I am going to be taken while still tied up? Perhaps I will even be made to serve him personally. Oh dear. I hope I do not embarrass myself.

I stared at her for a moment.

This mage really did have an astonishingly active imagination.
