Volume 2 Chapter 12 The Third Floor of the Simulated Dungeon
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Our group—now expanded to a party of five after we recruited Kasakura—ventured into the third floor of the Simulated Dungeon.
During our last run we had already reached this same level. Because a Simulated Dungeon generated using the leader’s student ID, the party could resume from their highest cleared floor even after bringing in a brand-new member. Changing the team lineup did not reset our entire progress.
Today’s run started cleanly from the third floor. Once you crossed the threshold into a new floor, the initial room became a permanent checkpoint that let you travel freely between any previously unlocked points.
Up to this point we had already clashed with Apparitions six times—twice against roaming entities and four times inside individual rooms. After assessing how well we were doing, I had to admit that bringing Kasakura on board was turning out to be an excellent decision.
Kasakura’s innate magic, Silicic Armor, was a defense-specialized sorcery that let her create a protective barrier around her entire body. Its main strength was not only the way it completely shut out enemy attacks; it also allowed any strikes from our side to pass straight through without trouble.
When she raised her barrier at the front, Risa and Chifumi could unleash their spells and Magic Bullets right behind her and watch their attacks glide effortlessly through the shield. The ability proved incredibly useful in ways standard defensive sorcery could never match. It was perfectly optimized for supporting the whole party.
The moment I first learned about this unique power, I had already started leaning toward pulling her into our group. Seeing her use it in actual combat only strengthened my conviction. Better yet, the mana it took for a single deployment was not even that heavy. The only thing left to test was the true limit of her barrier’s durability.
As we patrolled the corridors of the third floor, a familiar presence suddenly pricked at my senses.
It was the unmistakable sound of that Anatomical Model.
Under normal conditions the Simulated Dungeon was set so that a party would meet a Unique Variant only twice in an entire run. The first meeting instilled a healthy sense of dread, while the second tested the party’s adaptability and rewarded a tactical win. Running into one three or more times was supposed to be extremely rare. Yet we kept encountering Unique Variants on every single run, which was nothing short of an anomaly. Even if my nature as a Devil affected the calculations, the spawn rates were absurd. I decided to let it slide this time.
”Kasakura, a Unique Variant is heading our way,” I called out, my voice crisp and even. “I want you to focus on blocking its initial assault with your barrier.”
”U-Um… Right. Understood!” she stammered in response, her tone precise but laced with a clear nervous tremor.
”Up until now its opening move has always been a physical strike or a stream of fire from its mouth,” I added, tightening my grip. “Its strength and speed are on a completely different level compared to standard Apparitions, so don’t hold back. Give it everything you’ve got.”
”Yes… Loud and clear!” she shouted back, her voice tightening with sharp determined focus as she squared her shoulders.
Raising her voice to a confident pitch, Kasakura squared her shoulders and faced forward. Down the corridor the Anatomical Model came into view, strutting toward us with its usual swaggering gait.
Once it closed the distance, the model froze mid-stride for a fraction of a second, then instantly lunged into a full sprint. It followed the exact same pattern as our first encounter.
The model unleashed a flurry of heavy strikes, but its fists slammed hard against the barrier Kasakura had raised. Even under the weight of that rapid-fire combination, the shield held firm without a single scratch. Considering how Chifumi’s reinforced ice walls used to crack under similar impacts, the defensive power of this sorcery—which showed no signs of buckling even against full-force strikes—was remarkably high.
However, unlike an ice wall, her barrier could not repair damage or reflect impacts back at the attacker. Left on her own, Kasakura lacked a clear finishing move. Exorcising an Apparition still needed the coordinated support of an offensive specialist.
Realizing that mindless bludgeoning was getting it nowhere, the Apparition unhinged its jaw. After a few seconds of visible charging, a roaring torrent of fire erupted from its mouth like a military-grade flamethrower.
”…Whew…”
Exhaling a long steady breath, Kasakura kept her focus and held the barrier steady, completely neutralizing the searing heat. Her defensive specialty held up beautifully even against elemental sorcery.
The continuous stream of fire finally sputtered out after just under five seconds. Seizing the exact moment the flames died down, Yurina’s blade flashed through the air and cleanly severed the model’s head from its shoulders.
The severed head soared upward, where it was instantly encased in a sphere of pressurized water. A heartbeat later the intense hydraulic pressure imploded, crushing the skull into paste. Even without its head the torso tried to lurch forward, but I neutralized the remaining threat by detonating it into fragments with my Shock Sorcery. That marked our third victory against a Unique Variant; we now understood exactly how to handle them.
The models had structural weaknesses hidden inside their rigid frames. Yurina’s blade could cut cleanly through the joints—especially the neck, shoulders, and elbows. As long as she chose her targets accurately, she could handle them on her own. If Risa were present with her rifle she could easily blow their heads off by landing precise shots into those same joint gaps. Obliterating their bodies completely was a bit tedious, but severing the limbs stripped them of combat ability and made cleanup easy. So far our strategies were working flawlessly.
Only after confirming that the Apparition had dissolved entirely into dispersing smoke did Kasakura finally lower her barrier. It had been a flawless victory. Having her with us made the entire excursion incredibly smooth. More than anything, her presence let us preserve the valuable mana reserves that Risa and Chifumi would otherwise have spent.
I caught Chifumi’s eye across the corridor. The subtle nod she gave me showed that she already considered Kasakura highly capable.
Following that encounter we fought several more skirmishes against standard Apparitions while mapping out the remaining sectors until we finally located the stairwell leading down to the fourth floor. After securing the waypoint we officially logged out of the Simulated Dungeon.
Stepping out of the simulation pod, I swiped my student ID across the console of the Simulated Dungeon Generator to close the portal interface. Our homeroom teacher, Tamai-sensei, who had been intently skimming through a stack of administrative documents, caught sight of us and walked over.
”Welcome back,” Tamai-sensei noted, his voice maintaining its flat administrative neutrality.
”We’re back, Sensei,” I reported, offering a brief nod. “It’s a bit on the early side, but we’re planning to call it a day.”
”Understood,” he replied, tapping his pen against the clipboard. “Just make sure to submit your daily training log before you head home.”
We temporarily relocated to the hallway outside the Guidance Room. I asked Kasakura to wait by the entrance for a moment so the four original members of our party could realign our perspectives. Both Chifumi and I were fully intent on bringing her in, and since neither Risa nor Yurina had any objections, we reached an immediate unanimous consensus.
I called Kasakura into the room without further delay. As the official party leader I delivered the verdict.
”Kasakura, you’re cleared to join our group,” I announced, keeping my tone professional. “Welcome to the team. I’m looking forward to working with you.”
”Ah… Thank you so much!” she gasped, her words tumbling out with strict textbook politeness.
”Let’s give it our all out there,” I said, extending a hand.
”Yes, sir! Absolutely!!” she replied, her voice practically vibrating with earnest formality.
Bending her large frame, Kasakura bowed so deeply her posture practically folded in half. When I extended my right hand she hesitantly brought both of hers forward to return the gesture and gripped my palm. Her hands were soft… but there was something else beneath the surface. A distinct texture. Calluses from writing? It felt like the hand of someone who had poured immense unseen effort into a craft. Fascinating.
The moment Kasakura finished exchanging handshakes with everyone in the room, Chifumi stepped forward, her voice taking on its usual playful drawn-out lilt.
”Well then, since that’s settled, I’ll go ahead and walk you through our group’s internal rules and expectations,” Chifumi purred, her tone smooth and languidly neutral.
I happily left the remaining administrative details to Chifumi, who held the undisputed rank of the number-one Witch in our circle. While she explained the various legal and academic documents required to formalize the group transfer, all I had to do was stand at her side and maintain a serious expression to lend her words weight.
The primary document we needed was a formal petition notifying the school administration that Kasakura was now an integrated member of my specialized group. It was a straightforward single-page form that Chifumi had wisely prepared well in advance.
The moment Chifumi instructed her to take the form home, secure her parents’ formal endorsement, and return it signed, Kasakura pulled out a pen and began filling out her personal details right then and there. She casually mentioned that she had already cleared the entire arrangement with her household beforehand. While part of me thought there was no need to rush with such frantic urgency, I quickly realized her strategy: she wanted to establish her enrollment as an unalterable concrete fact before I had any chance to change my mind.
Asari Kasakura.1
Her signature was written in an incredibly elegant flowing calligraphic script. True to the standard of students who managed to enter the National High School as unaligned Free Agents, her baseline academic and technical specifications were remarkably high. It would not be surprising if she possessed a handful of hidden talents. In fact, despite their fierce exteriors, both Risa and Yurina were secretly phenomenal classical pianists.
Asari… like the little clam.
If you looked at her unique defensive sorcery as an impenetrable protective shell, the name suited her perfectly. Though given the ridiculous durability of that barrier, she felt less like a fragile little short-neck clam and more like a heavy ironclad oyster.
While I was letting my mind drift into these ridiculous semantic tangents, Chifumi’s explanation finally touched upon a clause that directly involved my personal oversight.
”Since you’ll be stepping into the role of Minoru’s specialized Alpha Female, you’ll need to undergo some formal… ‘guidance’ from him,” Chifumi explained, her voice dripping with an agonizingly slow teasing sweetness.
”Understood! I will be completely in your care!” Asari replied instantly, her words rigid with deferential compliance.
”However…” Chifumi paused, holding up a delicate hand to interrupt her. “There’s just one little thing.”
”?” Asari blinked, a look of profound confusion washing over her features.
Staring directly into Asari’s bewildered eyes, Chifumi delivered the ultimatum. “Minoru happens to be very, very particular about the girls he keeps close.”
”Right…!” Asari whispered, her expression instantly locking into one of absolute deadly seriousness.
”First things first… you need to lose weight,” Chifumi stated flatly, her voice completely devoid of its earlier warmth.
”—U-Um…” Asari stammered, catching her breath.
”Did you happen to mishear me?” Chifumi asked, her tone dropping into a chillingly calm neutral register.
”Ah, no! I heard you loud and clear… it’s just… um, are you truly ordering me to… slim down?” Asari checked, her voice shaking slightly under the weight of her formal training.
”Yes,” Chifumi replied simply.
Swallowing hard, Asari asked in a strained hushed whisper, “May I ask… what the underlying structural reason for that requirement is?”
”We’ll give you a full explanation after your ‘guidance’ session is complete,” Chifumi shot back smoothly, her delivery perfectly collected. “Rest assured, we fully expect and tolerate the subsequent drop in your overall mana capacity.”
”……I understand! In that case… when exactly will this ‘guidance’ take place…?” Asari inquired, her posture straightening with intense discipline.
”The very moment you finish thinning down,” Chifumi answered instantly.
Asari didn’t waver. She gave a firm resolute nod, fully internalizing the command.
”Understood. I will alter my physique immediately. I assume… I need to slim down to roughly the same proportions as Takino-san…?” Asari murmured, her gaze tracking toward Chifumi.
”You can just call me Chifumi. And as for your target… at the bare minimum, your stomach needs to be flat enough that your chest clearly extends past it,” Chifumi clarified, her voice entirely light and transactional.
”Yes, ma’am…” Asari whispered.
”Minoru, that works for you too, right?” Chifumi asked, turning her eyes toward me. “Her ‘guidance’ will be scheduled once she’s properly thinned down and prepared.”
”Works for me,” I replied. “Asari, I’m counting on you.”
”Understood…! I will achieve results without delay…!” Asari promised, her words stiff with an absolute unyielding formality.
Asari was practically burning with intense newfound determination.
If I had to guess what was playing out inside her head right now, I could easily picture the exact narrative she had spun for herself. She was thinking back to the sheer caliber of magic we had displayed during today’s dungeon training. Among our arsenal the absolute destructive output of my Shock Sorcery and Chifumi’s liquid manipulation—which had completely pulverized a Unique Variant in seconds—was undeniably monstrous. In standard magical theory power of that magnitude could only be achieved through a strict ‘Binding Vow’ or systemic equivalent. She likely assumed that while she didn’t know the precise mechanical nature of the ritual or the specific catalysts involved, our slender physiques and artificially suppressed mana capacities were the exact sacrifices required to exponentially elevate the base potency of our individual spells.
Sacrificing one attribute to augment another was an incredibly foundational principle in the realm of sorcery.
Furthermore it perfectly explained the distinct eccentric profile of the group she was trying to join. The fact that every single member of our party possessed a uniform slender physique would strike her as an intentional highly strategic choice rather than a bizarre aesthetic preference. She had undoubtedly been searching for a hidden correlation to explain why I went out of my way to recruit seemingly unoptimized members.
The logic behind why she had been granted immediate entry into the party right after the practical exam would also fit her theory perfectly. She had just proven that despite her low mana consumption her barrier could easily withstand a Unique Variant’s ultimate assault. She realized we now understood that even if she slimmed down and her overall mana pool shrank, her exceptional efficiency ensured she wouldn’t run out of gas even during an extended full-duration dungeon raid. In her mind she had successfully met the strict hidden criteria required to join our ranks.
She was likely entirely convinced that she had solved the puzzle.
To her the only remaining mystery was why we refused to explain the exact mechanics of the binding vow right here on the spot. But even that could be effortlessly written off as an extension of the contract’s restrictions. If she assumed that revealing the true nature of the vow to an uninitiated outsider would void the parameters of the spell, then her best tactical move was to drop the subject entirely. To secure her position as an irreplaceable inner-circle member of the party, her absolute priority was to drop the weight as fast as humanly possible and claim her formal “guidance.”
The Kasakura family was an established lineage of sorcerers. She wasn’t from an ordinary civilian household like Risa or Yurina. It was precisely because of her traditional upbringing that she could so easily overthink herself into a classic sorcerer-centric delusion.
It was a brilliant piece of deduction. Completely and utterly wrong, of course, but brilliant.
While the intense orientation session with Asari continued, Risa and Yurina were huddled together at the adjacent desk, diligently filling out our official training log for the day. Their heads were practically pressed together as they cross-referenced their memories and pieced together the events of the run to fill the pages.
”I mean, the main highlight of the report has to be the encounter with the Unique Variant, right?” Risa muttered, her tone sharp and casual.
”Are we seriously going to write down the exact same thing two days in a row?” Yurina countered, her speech refined and elegant.
”We don’t exactly have a choice. It’s a literal fact of what happened,” Risa argued, gesturing with her pen. “Sensei explicitly stated that any contact with a Unique Variant must be recorded in full detail. If we write about how our tactical approach shifted and improved because Asari joined the line, the phrasing will be completely different from yesterday’s entry. It’ll look perfectly fine.”
”Hmm. A valid point. Let us proceed on that basis,” Yurina conceded softly, adjusting the logbook.
Receiving her instructions from Risa, Yurina began elegantly penning the details into the logbook. True to her pristine refined exterior, her handwriting was remarkably beautiful. If I handed her a traditional brush pen she would probably produce characters so incredibly stylized and artistic they would be completely unreadable to the untrained eye. I’d have to make her try that sometime.
Time flew by, and Chifumi scored the final item on her administrative checklist.
”And for the last order of business… we’ll hold off on formal family introductions until after your ‘guidance’ is fully taken care of,” Chifumi concluded, her voice returning to its light breezy baseline.
”Understood… I will inform my parents accordingly…” Asari whispered, bowing her head in deep compliance.
In our world, joining a specialized sorcery group was a major milestone that officially connected two houses. To put it in extreme terms, it carried the same sociopolitical weight as a formal betrothal.
It was standard practice for the parents of both parties to meet and exchange formal greetings, though depending on the houses involved it was occasionally bypassed. In my mind it always drew an immediate parallel to the traditional engagement ceremonies of the Reiwa era.2
We had already completed the formal introductions with the Takino household. We had similarly taken care of the arrangements with Risa and Yurina’s families just the other day.
Initially, because I found the entire bureaucratic process incredibly tedious, I had tried to gently coast past it when dealing with Risa and Yurina’s parents. I had approached them with a deliberately casual spin: ‘There’s technically an official protocol for this sort of thing, but it’s completely optional, so please don’t feel pressured to do it if it’s a hassle.’ I was dropping massive hints that I wanted to skip it entirely. Unluckily for me, they immediately replied with an enthusiastic confirmation that they absolutely intended to do it. My brilliant plan to sweep the matter under the rug had shattered on the very first move.
Their families did not possess a deep granular understanding of the intricate etiquette governing sorcerer society. Precisely because they were entering a long-term alliance, they wanted to ensure they did not commit a massive social blunder or show disrespect to our side. They had simply concluded that even if it was a mere formality, important procedures deserved to be executed properly.
When I took a moment to look at it from their perspective, I realized their logic was completely sound, and felt a brief pang of self-reflection. Moving forward, my operations would actively involve the Naruse and Kibe households, meaning I needed to keep our foundation absolutely flawless. I had almost steered our entire trajectory off-course through pure laziness.
I resolved to ensure the formal greetings with the Kasakura family proceeded with absolute precision. This would mark the second established sorcerer lineage brought entirely under my influence. I needed to lay the groundwork flawlessly if I intended to exploit their connections to their absolute limit.
”Minoru-sama, we’ve finished compiling the training log. Please review it,” Yurina requested, her tone perfectly polished and respectful.
Yurina slid the completed logbook across the table for my inspection. Reading through the lines, I noticed she had gone out of her way to heavily romanticize just how monumentally useful Asari had been during the Unique Variant skirmish. The prose was laying it on a bit too thick, so I handed it back and asked her to tone the expressions down to something a bit more modest and objective.
By the time the revisions were finished, Chifumi’s administrative briefing had wound down to a natural conclusion. Before we cleared out of the room, Risa leaned in with a mischievous grin.
”We still have plenty of time left today. Do you want to have some fun right here before we head back?” Risa teased, her eyes narrowing playfully.
Since we had recently adjusted our internal scheduling, any day that involved a practical dungeon excursion was officially designated as a collective day for everyone in the harem.
Risa and Yurina both turned their gaze toward me, their eyes practically sparkling with anticipation, but I forced myself to exercise some absolute restraint.
”No, Kasakura is still right outside… let’s hold off for today,” I muttered, shaking my head.
”Eeeh? Why not? It’d be super educational for her to watch!” Risa grumbled, crossing her arms defensively.
”Minoru-sama…” Yurina murmured, her quiet voice carrying a distinct elegant note of disappointment.
Risa pouted, her lips puckering into a dramatic frown. Yurina immediately stood beside her, silently mimicking the exact same look of deep wordless protest. Come on, girls, neither of you has the face to pull off a duck-face pout. I turned to Chifumi, silently throwing out a desperate plea for backup.
”Mmm, let’s call it a wrap for today,” Chifumi intervened smoothly, her voice slicing through the tension with an airy effortless clarity. “We can introduce Asari to the fun another time. Specifically, during her formal ‘guidance’ session once she’s completed her matchmaking trial with Minoru.”
”Well, if Chifumi says so, I guess we can wait,” Risa huffed, backing down with a sharp sigh.
”Understood,” Yurina agreed softly, bowing her head in acceptance.
Wow, you two love to talk back to me, but the moment Chifumi opens her mouth you fall right into line, don’t you?
Ultimately we exited the Guidance Room and split into two separate paths. I headed straight for the Faculty Room completely on my own to hand our completed training log directly to our homeroom teacher, while the remaining four girls returned to the classroom to wait for me.
Upon receiving the report, Sensei stared at the document before looking up at me with an expression of pure unadulterated exhaustion. We had encountered a Unique Variant and secured an effortless instantaneous victory. ‘At the rate you’re going, why don’t you just aim to break the school’s historical record for the highest number of Unique Variant subjugations?’ he remarked, leaving me entirely unsure whether he was joking or being completely serious. The only reason I was receiving this kind of playful sarcasm from the faculty was because of the Simulated Dungeon Generator’s weird scaling metrics. I was completely innocent. (I chose to entirely ignore the variable that I was a Devil.)
By the time I made my way back to the classroom, the two unaligned Free Agent girls who had been quietly conducting self-study earlier were nowhere to be found.
Chifumi and the others informed me that before my return they had taken the initiative to pull the two girls aside and formally explain that our party lacked the capacity to accommodate them. Hearing the report of how downcast and heartbroken they looked as they gathered their things and left gave me a slight uncomfortable twinge of guilt. I could only silently hope that Komoda’s group would find a place to pick them up…
A short while later we made our way out of the school gates together. We bid farewell to Asari once we arrived at the train station, and as per our usual routine I brought Chifumi, Risa, and Yurina straight back to my residence.
Needless to say, they were absolutely delicious.

Summary:
Deploying into the third floor of the Simulated Dungeon, Minoru’s expanded party easily disintegrates a recurring Anatomical Model Unique Variant thanks to Kasakura Asari’s flawless Silicic Armor barrier. Upon returning to the academy, Chifumi manipulates the onboarding process by ordering an enthusiastic Asari to shed physical weight under the pretense of a magical binding vow requirement. Asari completely buys into this tactical misunderstanding, leaving Minoru to successfully establish strategic leverage over yet another traditional sorcerer lineage while an unresolved variable looms over the rejected Free Agent applicants.
