Volume 13 Chapter 439 Morikawa Kaede, Let’s Go Home
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I wonder how much time has passed since we came out into space.
When you stay in the cosmos for this long, you completely lose your sense of time.
Coming out here made me realize that the sight of the sun rising and setting wasn’t just some ordinary, everyday thing.
”Aqua-kun… are you still asleep? Look, can you see it right over there? The Earth that you protected is right before our eyes. Just a little longer, just a little more and we’ll be back on Earth,” Kanon murmured, her voice filled with a gentle, aching longing.
I stared out at the Earth through the shuttle’s window.
All that’s left is for everyone to go home together, and yet… It’s supposed to be a happy ending, and yet… Aqua-kun still won’t wake up for me.
’I’ve located Orbital Star Lynx. Everyone, gather around.’
I cast a brief glance at Aqua-kun’s face inside the medical pod before heading toward the section where Nee-san and the others were waiting.
As I entered the Sector module containing the cockpit, Kanon, who had been taking a nap, and Emily, who had been working, arrived a moment later.
”Hey, Kanon… look at those dark circles under your eyes. It’s completely ruining your beautiful face,” I barked, trying to mask my worry with a sharp, streetwise grin.
”Yeah, totally! If Aqua-kun wakes up and sees you looking like that, he’s going to literally worry himself to death, no lie!” Emily added, her voice bursting with a flashy, dramatic energy.
Emily and I had forced Kanon into the crew quarters to get some rest, but as I thought, she hadn’t been able to sleep at all.
Kanon squeezed out a forced smile along with the words, “I’m okay.”
Good grief, she looked even worse now than when we first met.
There was absolutely no need for her to put up a front like that in front of us.
”Kanon, if it hurts, just spit it out. Don’t go tryin’ to shoulder everything by yourself and wrap it all up on your own damn terms,” I growled, stepping closer to confront her stubbornness.
”Kaede-paisen is literally so right! You’ve got such a major case of chunibyo that you always try to hide everything inside, which is like, totally bad for your vibes!” Emily whined, tossing her hands up dramatically.
Emily and I wrapped our arms tightly around Kanon, pulling her into a fierce hug.
You really are a handful for a junior sister position. Trying to carry everything all by yourself.
”You ain’t the only one who’s heartbroken over Aqua-kun, you know. So quit the tough act and let us cry with you, Kanon,” I muttered into her hair, my tone softening into raw honesty.
At my words, Kanon nodded, looking as if she were about to burst into tears at any second.
”Kaede-san and Emily-san are exactly right, Kanon-san…. We aren’t telling you to rely on adults just because you’re still a minor and a child. We are telling you to rely on us because we are the Verification Team, because we are comrades. It would be deeply painful for us as your comrades if you couldn’t lean on us when things get tough,” Nee-san spoke gently, her words perfectly measured and supportive.
As expected of Nee-san.
Unlike Emily and me, who just speak without thinking much, she really knows how to talk sense into Kanon.
Whether she was genuinely convinced by Nee-san’s words or not, Kanon nodded over and over again.
”Now then, let me explain our plan moving forward once again. Mikoto-san,” Nee-san commanded, shifting instantly back to her professional demeanor.
”Right!” Mikoto-chan replied promptly.
On one of the monitors, the current position of our space shuttle, the Izanami, was displayed alongside the coordinates of the unmanned space station for the Hyper-booster, the Orbital Star Lynx.
”From this point on, our shuttle will maintain its course to dock with the Orbital Star Lynx as planned. We’re going to scrape up whatever remaining energy it has left and use it to breach the atmosphere. But… take a look at this,” Nee-san explained, her tone turning dangerously grim.
The screen flipped to a live feed, showing the Orbital Star Lynx—heavily damaged by space debris—spinning violently on its horizontal axis around a rod-like vertical core.
”To be completely frank, attempting a docking maneuver with the Orbital Star Lynx in this state is incredibly dangerous. But we don’t have a choice. If we want everyone to make it back to Earth safely… if we want to bring Aqua-san home, we absolutely have to do this,” Nee-san declared, her face hardening with a rare, absolute resolve.
Nee-san had that dead-serious expression she only wore when things were critical.
Just looking at her face made me realize how insanely hazardous this mission actually was.
”Alright, I will now explain the trajectory for our return to Earth in detail,” Nee-san continued, focusing back on the telemetry data.
Nee-san drew things out by hand on her tablet, explaining it thoroughly so even someone like me could comprehend.
”Our space shuttle, the Izanami, will maintain its current vector and aim for the orbital path of the Orbital Star Lynx. At the precise intersection where our two trajectories overlap, we will approach the rotating Orbital Star Lynx and initiate docking procedures. Immediately afterward, we’ll use our remaining fuel to fire the shuttle’s thrusters in reverse, counteracting the rotation to stabilize our position. Once we’ve replenished our fuel and electrical reserves from the Orbital Star Lynx, we will disengage. The space shuttle Izanami will then plunge into Earth’s atmosphere for final reentry,” Nee-san mapped out carefully.
In a calm, measured tone, Nee-san emphasized that we would only get one single shot at the docking sequence.
She also warned us that matching vectors with the spinning Orbital Star Lynx would subject us to an astronomical amount of gravitational force.
The moment Nee-san finished speaking, Mikoto-chan, who had been silently listening the entire time, slowly opened her mouth.
”If I may add a technical point. First, the gravity you all experienced during the initial space shuttle launch was 3G. The maximum force experienced during training, or by Formula racers and fighter jet pilots, is approximately 6G. According to our calculations, the gravitational load for this mission will far exceed that—reaching a massive 12G,” Mikoto-chan stated, her voice chillingly clinical and analytical.
All four of us, myself included, gasped at the sheer magnitude of that gravity.
You’ve got to be kidding me. That’s four times the force we felt when we broke free from Earth into space.
”A load of 12G is roughly the absolute threshold at which a human being can retain consciousness. If sustained for a full 15 minutes, your hearts will cease functioning, resulting in immediate death. Lord Aqua, who is currently inside the medical pod, will remain completely safe thanks to the Meissner effect. However, under those exact conditions, one of us must man the control stick to pilot the shuttle, while another operates the manual overrides to dock the hull with the Orbital Star Lynx,” Mikoto-chan laid out the grim probability without an ounce of hesitation.
Mikoto-chan’s gaze swept across everyone’s faces in the room.
”As for the control stick, even if Nee-san loses consciousness, I can take over piloting duties since I am a machine. However, to successfully execute the connection with the Orbital Star Lynx, we require one more person to withstand that gravity and manually perform the operation,” Mikoto-chan concluded, highlighting the critical bottleneck.
I see… so that’s how it is.
Even with my notoriously slow intuition, I managed to wrap my head around it.
In short, I was the one who had to do it.
I stared straight into Mikoto-chan’s face.
”Leave that role to me,” I ordered flatly, throwing my thumb against my chest with aggressive confidence.
”Kaede-paisen?!” Emily shrieked, her voice hitting a panicked, high-pitched register.
”Kaede-senpai?!” Kanon gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief.
”Kaede-san?!” Nee-san breathed out, stunned.
Emily, Kanon, and Nee-san all whipped their heads toward me simultaneously.
Whoa, hold on, what’s with the shocked faces, you guys?
When you boil it down, this is just a contest to see which is stronger—the power of gravity, or my own raw power, right?
If that’s the case, the math is simple.
”Look, I know I’m usually a piece of work, but you guys gonna back me or what? Just leave the heavy liftin’ to me,” I challenged them, flashing a rough smirk.
”What are you even saying, Kaede-senpai!” Kanon cried out, tears welling in her eyes.
”Yeah, no way! Like, there is literally no one more dependable than Kaede-paisen in the entire universe!” Emily yelled, her eyes shining with sudden, intense adoration.
Heh, stop it, you guys.
As someone who basically never gets looked up to by her juniors, I couldn’t help but let a slightly smug expression slip onto my face.
Geez, Emily. Don’t look at me with such sparkling eyes, it’s embarrassing.
This is exactly why you’re so damn cute.
Partly to hide my blushing, I turned my gaze toward Nee-san.
”Kaede-san, are you absolutely serious about this?” Nee-san asked, searching my eyes for any sign of doubt.
”Hell yeah I am. If you’re gonna hold down the controls, Nee-san, then manually hooking us up is my gig. Don’t sweat it. I might look rough around the edges, but when I took that certified ochinpo sommelier1 license, I walked away with a clean, flawless hundred percent on the connection section that left everyone else completely stumped,” I cackled, throwing out the raunchy joke without a single care.
The grim, dark expressions instantly vanished from the faces of Nee-san, who had been listening intently, and Kanon, who had been looking so depressed until just a moment ago.
On the flip side, my juniors Emily and Mikoto-chan were staring at me with expressions that were a chaotic mix of profound respect and sheer envy.
”Now that it’s settled, let’s do this. Time waits for no one,” Nee-san commanded, her spirit renewed as she extended her hand.
We stacked our hands one by one on top of Nee-san’s outstretched palm.
”OMG, wait! This is literally exactly like that iconic scene from the bonus footage on the BERYL live DVD!” Emily squealed, her influencer energy bouncing right back.
”Come on, Kanon, since we’re doing this, you gotta say the line. This kind of heavy hype is traditionally handled by the absolute youngest member of the squad, ain’t it?” I nudged her, grinning.
”That sounds wonderful. Kanon-san, if you would be so kind,” Nee-san encouraged with a warm smile.
”Yeah, yeah! Kanon, drop some bars! Make it as wild or as dirty as you want!” Emily cheered, bouncing on her heels.
A small, genuine smile finally crept onto Kanon’s face at Emily’s prompting.
Seriously, if you aren’t full of energy, the rest of us can’t get pumped up either.
Without you, the power just won’t surge through us!
”Everyone… I’ll save my thank-yous for later. So let’s bring Aqua back and go home together—back to our Earth!” Kanon shouted, her voice ringing clear with absolute determination.
”Hell yeah!” I roared.
”Yes!” Mikoto-chan acknowledged.
”Right!” Nee-san called out.
”Understood!” Emily cheered.
With our spirits fully ignited, everyone took their designated positions.
The primary flight controls were entirely in Nee-san’s hands.
Mikoto-chan was on standby right next to her, ready to take over the stick the instant Nee-san blacked out.
Meanwhile, Emily, Kanon, and I buckled ourselves securely into the harness straps over in the docking control bay.
Even though I had claimed I would be the one to do it, it didn’t strictly have to be just a solo challenge for me.
In the worst-case scenario, as long as at least one of us stayed conscious long enough to punch the sequence through, we would win.
’88 seconds remaining until Orbital Star Lynx approaches. Everyone, let’s go!’
Slowly, I could feel the gravity starting to push down against my flesh.
The shuttle had begun to pitch and roll, matching its rotational velocity with the spinning space station.
’We’ve surpassed 3G. We’re approximately 3 meters from Orbital Star Lynx.’
Mikoto-chan’s automated announcement echoed through the cabin.
This was the exact same load we experienced when we launched into the stars.
At this level, it was still completely manageable.
’4G… 5G…’
The physical burden on my body was rapidly compounding.
We hadn’t even reached 6G yet—which was only half of our target threshold—but my muscles and skin already felt like they were on the verge of screaming.
Glancing up at the adjacent viewing port, the docking mechanism came into view.
As expected of Nee-san. She’s already brought us this incredibly close.
’Breaking through 6G. Error 55cm. Amazing piloting!’
Kanon’s expression twisted into one of intense agony.
’Everyone… I’m sorry. The rest… I’m leaving to you…’
”Kanon! Keep your eyes open!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, slamming my fist against the restraint frame.
Between the acute sleep deprivation and the sheer psychological strain, her body had reached its limit.
Kanon’s head snapped back limply, and she lost consciousness right then and there.
Leave it to us, Kanon. Your older sisters are going to bring you and Aqua-kun back home safe and sound, no matter what!!
’7… 8… reaching 9G. Distance to final docking threshold is 0.85.’
Under the crushing weight of the extreme gravity, my tensed muscles locked up tight, and my strained skeletal structure groaned aloud as if it were about to fracture.
We still had 3G left to climb, but the frantic pounding of my heart was sending a direct, unvarnished warning to my brain that my body was entering a lethal danger zone.
’Ka…Kaede-paisen, I’m sorry. I can’t go any further…’
”Emily! Hey! Emily!!” I roared, watching her head drop forward into the harness.
Emily, who had been fighting tooth and nail to hang on, completely blacked out.
I have to… I’m the only one left who can do this!!
The gravitational force felt like it was trying to flatten my entire physical form into pulp.
Even so, I ground my teeth together, desperately holding on to reality.
’We’ve reached 12G. Velocity is good. Entering fine adjustments.’
Hurry, just hurry the hell up!
I dug one hand violently into my own thigh, squeezing with everything I had left to force the pain to keep me conscious.
’Kaede…san…the rest…’
”Nee-san! Nee-san!!” I screamed back, but there was no response.
Nee-san’s voice cut out entirely as she succumbed to the pressure.
In this absolute void of a cockpit, the only ones left with their consciousness intact were Mikoto-chan and myself.
’Speed matching, 10, 9, 8…’
My blood vessels felt like they were about to burst open under the immense, compressed pressure.
In the midst of that suffocating agony, I kept screaming internally, over and over, demanding to know who else would stand up if I failed.
’7, 6…’
I want to protect the smiles of my dear friends, my companions!
I want to bring the person I love home!!
All the cells sleeping in my body. The genes I inherited from my ancestors!
Now is the time to lend me your power, your host!!
’5, 4, 3…’
I wonder if my ears were playing tricks on me, but the pounding of my heart, which had been so loud just moments before, suddenly faded into silence.
In that instant, my consciousness flickered, threatening to slip away.
’Kaede’
I heard Mom (okaa-san)’s voice.
Memories of my childhood flooded my mind all at once.
Is this what they call a deathbed vision?2
No… that’s not right. I’m still alive.
’I’m sorry, Kaede. Because of me, you ended up with this extraordinary power…’
My Mother (Kaa-san) smiled at me with a look of apology.
That’s not right, Mom.
Not once have I ever hated this extraordinary power.
Because, Mom, thanks to this power, I can save the people important to me, the person I love.
”Mom!” I cry out.
The only one who was clear in my hazy consciousness was Mom.
I’m so glad I was born as Mom’s child.
I’m so happy to be born as Morikawa Kaede, Mom’s daughter.
”Dad!” I scream.
Not only Mom.
I also saw the faces of my father, my old grandmother living in the countryside, and my great-grandmother who died when I was young.
To all of them, I clasped my hands in my heart and gave thanks.
Come on, all the cells that have formed Morikawa Kaede leading up to me.
This is the culmination of the Morikawa clan, the power of Morikawa Kaede!!
”Thank you for birthing me with such a sturdy body! !”
The Verification Team’s intelligence担当…?
No, that’s not right. I’ve only ever had one role from the start.
This is the power of Morikawa Kaede, the power担当 of the Verification Team!!
I spin the rotary lever around and around.
The lever is so damn heavy! But, that’s nothing in the face of my power!!
”Poowaaaaaaah!!”
I felt a click as it locked into place.
At the same time, the light in front of me changed from red to green.
This proves the connection is completely locked.
’Connection with Orbital Star Lynx confirmed. Releasing thrusters! You’re amazing, Kaede-oneechan!’
The power担当 of the Verification Team is no joke, right?3
I desperately endured, though I felt like I was about to lose consciousness.
Glancing at the gravity system inside the cabin, it was slowly decreasing from 12G to 11G.
Just because the speed was matched and the connection was made doesn’t mean the load suddenly lightened.
From here, we’ll slowly reduce the speed and return to normal gravity.
’Kaede…san?’
The voice of Nee-san, who had regained consciousness, reached me.
As the gravity decreased, Emily and Kanon also regained their consciousness.
’Amazing. Kaede-senpai!’
’Kaede-paisen. I knew from the start that you would do it!’
Hey, hey, stop it, you guys. You’re making me blush?
I blushed, looking pleased.
’Refueling complete. Releasing connection with Orbital Star Lynx.’
We each returned to our seats and tightened our belts securely.
Now, all that’s left is to go home.
Emily, feeling confident, begins making an announcement.
’Uh, to all passengers, thank you for using our service this time. How was your ‘True Space Journey’ presented by Space Experience X Corp. and Seijo Tourist?’
’One star, maybe. After all, we all passed out at the end.’
Haha! That’s right!!
The tension I felt finally eased as I heard Emily’s joke and Kanon’s tsukkomi in response.5
It felt like Kanon’s usual self was finally returning.
Even Nee-san, who usually deliberately stays out of such banter, joined the conversation.
’From now on, we will descend to Earth. Passengers, please be careful not to faint one last time.’
The blue Earth came into view before us.
Emily noticed something and pointed at it.
’Hey, everyone, look. Over there! !’
I can see lights glowing in the darkness.
You’ve got to be kidding me…
’Welcome home… it says.’
To write a message using night lights… I wonder how many countries and people cooperated to do this.
The words almost bring tears to our eyes.
Ah, Aqua… finally. Let’s go home together with everyone.
’Beginning countdown. Ten seconds until atmospheric re-entry. Nine, eight, seven…’
Goodbye, space.
Next time, I’ll come back when we stream Aqua’s space live concert.
’Three, two, one… atmospheric entry. Earth! I—we have returned!’
Mikoto-chan, that’s not good.
The director of Zandum is going to be pissed at us later!6
The space shuttle creaks under the frictional heat and gravity of atmospheric entry.
’Hang in there, Izanami! Just a little longer!’
’I’ll let you eat your fill of electricity and fuel when we get back!’
’Thank you for carrying us all the way to the end!’
’Let’s go home. You too, with us!’
We all thanked Izanami, which had brought us back to Earth even though it was beaten and battered.
After passing through the cloudless, deep blue stratosphere and plunging into the clouds, a massive, wide ocean came into view.
’Atmospheric entry complete. However, we have drifted from our planned coordinates. This is…’
The monitor shows the external camera feed.
There, we see military ships anchored in the water.
And not just one or two. Hundreds of warships are waiting for us.
”The Stars, the Far East Federation, and even the States’ ships!?” I stammer.
”We finally saved the Earth from crisis, so don’t tell me they’re having a war or something!?” Emily shouts.
”No way… you’ve got to be kidding…” Kanon whispers.
Shoot, if it comes to that, I’m the muscle, so I’ll just have to do something about it.
Having brought along that bamboo spear just in case, I shoulder it and try to open the hatch to head outside.7
But right at that moment, a transmission comes through the shuttle’s speaker.
’This is Admiral Bates commanding the States’ fleet. Welcome back, heroes.”
’This is Kalinin from the Far East Federation’s General Staff Headquarters. We are truly delighted by your return. Welcome back.’
’This is Commander-in-Chief Fersen of the Stars Navy. I am so glad you returned safely. Please allow us to escort you back.’
Hearing the messages coming in from the fleets of various nations, we look at each other.
It seems everyone was waiting for us out on the ocean to return.
Looking at the monitor, the people who came out on the decks of the warships are in dress uniform, saluting us.
”Hey, there’s stuff flying overhead too,” Emily notes.
Prompted by Emily’s voice, I look up at the shuttle’s skylight and see fighter jets and helicopters flying above us.
How can this be, it seems we’re heading back to Japan with this massive convoy.
As I quietly put away the bamboo spear like nothing happened, a familiar voice comes through the speaker.
’I’m Special Commander Momiji Morikawa of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force. Welcome home, everyone.’
”Wait, Mom!?” I blurt out.
Stunned, my eyes go wide at Mom’s voice.
Perhaps my voice went through the transmission, because I can hear Mom chuckling.
’Fufu, welcome home, Kaede. Well done. That’s my daughter for you.’
”Aww, Mom~!” I whine.
Thanks to Mikoto-chan’s quick thinking, I look at the monitor and see Mom’s face clearly displayed.
Ah, what is this feeling?
Maybe it’s because I feel so relieved seeing Mom’s face.
All the muscles that had been tense until now suddenly relax, and I lose my balance, almost falling over.
Noticing this, everyone gently supports my body.
Hehe, thanks, guys.
’Now, everyone. Let’s go home, to our house.’
At Mom’s gentle words, a peaceful smile naturally spreads across my face.
Yeah… let’s go home. Together with everyone, to our home.
And so, escorted by nations from all over the world, we crossed the vast Pacific Ocean to return to Japan.
Thanks to Aqua, the threat to Earth was gone.
The world will join hands once more and begin walking the path to peace under a strong bond.
After a long, long journey, our daily lives are finally returning.
But only Aqua… even after returning to Earth, was still asleep, just like back then.

Summary:
Accelerating into orbital rendezvous paths, the crew of the space shuttle Izanami prepares for a high-risk manual docking configuration with a damaged, spinning station. The astronomical gravitational pressure climbs aggressively from 3G up toward a calculated maximum of 12G. One by one, the crew members succumb to physical exhaustion and lose consciousness inside the cockpit, leaving Morikawa Kaede clinging desperately to awareness as the countdown enters its single-digit numbers.
Struggling against overwhelming gravitational forces, Kaede Morikawa unlocks her ancestral power to secure the shuttle’s connection and drop the G-load. Upon entering the atmosphere, the crew spots a global collaborative message of light spelled out across the darkened surface of the planet. Just as military fleets surround them, Kaede discovers her own mother is commanding the domestic defense force, leaving the true savior Aqua remaining in a comatose sleep.
—
Trivia:
The space shuttle Izanami must dock with a rotating target to harvest remaining fuel reserves.
A gravitational load of 12G sustained for fifteen minutes triggers cardiac arrest in standard human biology.
Aqua-kun remains isolated from gravitational stress within a medical pod optimized by the Meissner effect.
Kaede previously secured a flawless score on a certification curriculum explicitly dealing with structural connections.
Kaede’s mother feels deep guilt for passing down her daughter’s freakish physical abilities.
The spaceship Izanami sustains extreme damage and structural wear during the planetary landing.
The shuttle lands slightly off its planned trajectory, putting it directly in front of global allied navies.
Kaede carried a literal bamboo spear all the way to space as a backup weapon.
