Volume 3 Chapter 49 Long-Cherished Goal

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

My home, the Grand Principality, where we speak a Finno-Samic tongue, is a land locked away. We are hemmed in by the sea to the west and north, a vast stretch of marshland to the south—formerly the border with the Kingdom of Larland—that is wide enough to swallow a nation whole, and a boundary of lakes and bogs to the east, separating us from the Empire of Rus.

My knowledge of geography is limited to high school classes, not professional expertise, but I suspect most of our land is a solid flat rock, or “tableland” as they say. If that were the case, one would expect to find iron mines, but our country is so devoid of mineral resources that even the Dwarf tribes won’t come near. I assume the Great Ice Age scraped away the topsoil and carried our riches somewhere else.

Because of this, metal is incredibly precious here, and bronze, which other nations wouldn’t even bother to use, is still highly valued for sword-making.

That doesn’t mean we have no iron weapons at all. We import them from Schweilitz. However, our funds are limited, so they aren’t exactly in high supply.

After all, our only exports are silver fox furs and seafood, like whale. Being a frigid region, we can barely harvest enough crops to feed ourselves, let alone a surplus. Wheat only grows in the south of the former Polotsk Principality; otherwise, we have barley or Rye, and whatever Thomas is trying to push with his potato efforts.

Perhaps because the region is so poor and difficult to invade, we rarely suffer raids from other nations. But if we were attacked by a country armed with iron weapons, our easily broken bronze swords would be useless. We would be occupied in an instant.

…If not for that old hag Maya promising an invasion.

There are a few narrow corridors between the southern wetlands and the eastern marshes, but there is only one that connects north to south. At the southern tip of that corridor (on the former Kingdom of Larland side) lies Trabius, where we are currently holed up.

If this point is breached, Maya’s threats will suddenly become a very painful reality.

I was on my knees, holding Katri’s head in both hands as she knelt, moving her head as I moved my hips, when a girl carrying a broom walked in without knocking.

”Um, I am terribly sorry to interrupt your, ah, recreation,” Mallet said, her voice small. “But General Thomas has sent word that there is dust rising in the distance along the northern road, and, um, some sort of, well, army is headed this way.”

Even though we were both only in our undergarments, my lower half was completely exposed. Since she was in the middle of performing oral s*x, it was I who felt embarrassed, but the girl, Mallet, said it without a hint of hesitation. Well, her speech stumbling halfway through the report might have meant she was a little surprised.

If it’s coming from the north, it’s probably reinforcements from the Grand Principality crossing the corridor. What are they thinking? They barely have any weapons. They’re practically marching to their deaths.

I wanted to continue, but there was no help for it. I apologized to Katri, and accompanied by Kenze, I stepped out into the hallway and we both ran toward the North Gate.

Thomas was at the North Gate with several soldiers, but Isabella was nowhere to be seen. In her place stood the Mage who had been with us earlier, able to fly the |fixed-wing drone, standing with the remote-control helmet on. She must have just launched it, as I could see the craft gaining altitude.

”How does it look?” I asked.

”I can’t see them from here yet, but it seems they’ve noticed us too,” the Mage replied.

Thomas answered, looking toward the west. Outside the citadel walls, farmlands stretched out, and tents were lined up on the south side of the road leading west. The smoke from the hearths, rising into the sunset, was being carried toward us by the gentle west wind. From there, a group of about ten on |Horseback were riding across the fields from their main camp, heading toward us.

”What shall we do? Shall we loose the arrows?” Kenze asked, her tone crisp and professional.

The group on |Horseback must have come onto the road circling the town to confirm the source of the dust from the north. Kenze was suggesting she pick them off from atop the citadel walls. With her skill, she could likely shoot down even a Knight from this distance.

”Let’s wait and confirm the situation first,” I commanded.

If it is indeed the Grand Principality’s army as I suspect, we will have to welcome them through the gates by evening. If we provoke them clumsily and draw a larger force from the enemy camp, it will become a nuisance.

”I can see them,” the Mage called out.

I told her I was touching it, and as I placed my hand on her, I saw the |Catapults heading toward us along the road.

”Thomas, those are your soldiers,” I said. “They’re hauling the |Catapults on wagons.”

No, wait. Those |Catapults are dummies. They look like |Catapults, but they lack the pivot point for the beam that would launch a stone. They are lined up, heading toward us along the road.

 ”Hey, it’s a dummy, the |Catapult,” I muttered.

”Ho, and how many of them are heading this way?” Thomas asked.

 ”Twelve… no, fourteen of them.”

Behind them, about fifty Infantrymen with spears were lined up, led by the late Lord of Yoghes’s Third Son, Darius. I thought he was currently acting as the substitute Lord of Mustopae. Behind them, twenty genuine, short-range |Catapults were positioned, followed by twenty more for long-range.

”Hey, I see |Horseback behind the |Catapults,” I observed. “And those… those are Heavy Cavalry soldiers.”

I used telepathy to have the drone lower its altitude to get closer to the cavalrymen. The Knight in the lead, holding a spear, lifted his face mask and looked up at the |fixed-wing drone.

”Why? The Viscount of Veresk, from the border town, is leading the cavalry soldiers. There are fifty of them.”

If he brought that many, doesn’t that leave his own territory undefended? He’s gone mad.

”Hurry! Soldiers, grab your bows and get up on the walls!” Thomas shouted toward the interior.

”You’re sure I should kill them?” Kenze asked.

”Yeah, go ahead and kill them. I’m going to go retrieve the Golems,” I replied.

I answered Kenze and looked back at our allies. The foolish Viscount of Veresk was sprinting past the wagons carrying the |Catapults. Is he a battle-maniac? He has no obligation to go that far for us.

Darius, leading the Infantry, was also skirting past the wagons. I wondered what they were doing; they unhitched the horses that had been pulling the dummy |Catapults and the men began to push the wagons themselves. The dummy |Catapults stuck out from the wagon chassis, and the Infantry were hiding underneath them, pushing.

”A tank? An armored vehicle?” I mused.

Looking closely, boards were hung in front of them to prevent arrows from hitting their feet.

”If they get hit by one of those, even the Heavy Cavalry soldiers won’t get away unscathed. They certainly think of everything.”

I pulled my hand away from the Mage and, as promised, headed down from the wall to get the Golems.

”I see dust to the west!” Someone on the wall shouted.

Looking, I could faintly see something like dust under the sunset. I rushed back to the Mage and took her hand.

’Fly the |fixed-wing drone to the west,’ I ordered via telepathy.

 ’The mana…’ the Mage hesitated.

 ’Is it low?’ I asked.

She had only been flying it for ten minutes. It should be able to fly for thirty minutes on a full charge.

’Yes, I flew it earlier today and didn’t have enough time to recharge it to full,’ she explained.

Come to think of it, she was there when we were toying with the military envoy.

’Alright, never mind the distance, just gain some altitude,’ I directed.

She raised the |fixed-wing drone by about 300 meters and moved it one kilometer to the west. I could see a large group moving toward us on the plains about five kilometers away. There hadn’t been any snow for several days, so the dust was intense; I couldn’t tell how many people were inside it. But it was clear that the wagon designs were not from Schweilitz, and unfortunately, I had to judge them as reinforcements for Maya.

Moreover, about five kilometers behind this group, there was a green band (a forest) extending, and beyond that, perhaps another ten kilometers or so, I could see another group kicking up dust as they headed toward us on the plains.

 ”This is bad,” I said.

 ”What’s wrong?” Thomas asked.

I explained the situation I had just seen to Thomas, who had asked.

”Call for Isabella,” Thomas ordered a nearby soldier, then crossed his arms and closed his eyes.

In the meantime, the reinforcements from the Grand Principality drew closer, and the leading dummy |Catapults became visible. The Maya warlord’s scouts, who had come to verify, seemed to think their job was done and began to turn back. Kenze attacked them there, and only two managed to escape and return.

Furthermore, the Viscount of Veresk and his men passed the |Catapult unit and approached.

”Open the North Gate,” I commanded.

”I’m going,” I said, leaving those words behind as I descended the stairs.

I opened the heavy doors with the gatekeeper soldier, and the Heavy Cavalry soldiers thundered inside. The Viscount on |Horseback at the front made a wide turn and came to where I was.

”Why are you… still alive?” the Viscount asked.

Because I didn’t die, obviously. The Viscount of Veresk dismounted, lifted his face mask, and stared at me intently.

”Is the word out that I’m dead?” I asked.

”Yeah,” the Viscount replied. “Because you were thought to be dead, your son Reinhardt succeeded as Grand Duke, and Duke Rolandas of Yoghess and your third wife, Teressa-san, became the regents.”

”Then what about Max, the body-double?” I inquired.

”He went back to the country, and he took the real Queen Thiele of Larland with him.”

 ”Why?” I asked.

”A |foreigner wouldn’t know the details of that, would they?”

Well, I suppose so. I had asked him for favors and told him about the princess and the body double. No, that’s not it. Why am I supposed to be dead?

”The only other thing I know is that your fiancée, the youngest daughter of the previous Cain Lord, Sanna-Cain, became Reinhardt’s betrothed,” the Viscount noted.

Well, that’s fine, I suppose, but Reinhardt is taking a much older bride. No, that’s not it either. Why am I supposed to be dead?

”Who reported my death?” I demanded.

”Someone from a trading company—what was it called—an acquaintance of Duke Igor.”

 ”Georg von Bergmann?” I guessed.

”Yeah, that’s the name,” he agreed. “They said the information was delivered as reliable news from Schweilitz itself. Since there was no word from you even after a month, they held the funeral, and Reinhardt inherited the title.”

”Wait a minute. Didn’t Thomas’s subordinates go to request reinforcements?” I asked.

”They did. That’s why it took a month of preparation before we finally got here.”

A month? No, it hasn’t even been two weeks yet.

”They told me they were going on a campaign to mourn you, and since they didn’t have any cavalry, they asked if I would come. Since we aren’t exactly strangers, I said I’d go.”

Then, he looked at me again.

 ”So, why aren’t you dead?”

”Is it a crime to be alive?” I retorted.

”It’s bad enough! I came here because it was a funeral campaign. What am I supposed to do with all this pent-up fighting spirit now?!” he groaned.

”How should I know?” I replied.

But, well, I felt a little grateful that he felt that way about me. Besides, if my beloved son has taken on the heavy burden of Grand Duke, then I am free. If we can just get through this, I might be able to reset my life.

”Look, Viscount, just get out of here now.”

”Why? I came here fully prepared.”

”Right now, the enemy has a thousand men. In a little while, they’ll have reinforcements of about the same number. No need for a noble of the Rus to die for us, right.”

Our current strength is one hundred and fifty, the Viscount’s [Horseback] are fifty, and the [Grand Principality]’s [Infantry] are fifty. Even if we hole up in the castle walls to fight, if their thousand are joined by reinforcements, that makes two thousand. Plus, if you add the ones kicking up dust behind them, there is simply no way we can win.

This guy is from another country; it would be a shame to let him die.

”Hey, former [Grand Duke], do you think a noble can just say, ‘We’re going to lose, so we came as reinforcements, but actually, we’re going home’?”

”You could, if it were you.”

”I’ll kill you. Do you have any respect for nobles?”

Just as I was thinking what a troublesome bastard he was, the reinforcements entered.

”Whoaaaa, the [Grand Duke] is alive. Ah, it’s just a lookalike.”

 It’s [Yoghess]’s [Third son], Darius.

”It’s true, amazing, it’s well done.”

”Is that what you call two peas in a pod?”

Am I an object!? Thomas’s soldiers aren’t much either. Look closely, I’m the real deal. When the boss is a muscle-head, does it infect the subordinates?

There were many cargo wagons following, and since the square at the north entrance couldn’t take any more, I had them enter through the east gate.

”Alright, take the dummies and short-range |Catapults| off the wagons and place them inside the east, west, south, and north gates as barricades. Move the long-range ones to the west gate garden.”

As Thomas gives the orders, the [Soldier]s start moving quickly. It’s a lot of trouble for them, having come from so far away.

”Officers and above, gather; we’re holding a strategy meeting.”

Those who gathered were Thomas, Isabella, me, the Viscount, Darius, and the former [Polotsk Principality] [Guard captain].

 ”Larry is the ‘lookalike’.”

Upon hearing that I was supposed to be dead, Thomas said he’d be calling me “lookalike” from now on. He says it’s because it’s a hassle to explain, and it’ll be easier to move around as a “lookalike.”

”Mutual reinforcements have arrived, but I don’t think there is any change to the time they will attack, which is from the early hours of tomorrow morning until dawn.”

 That’s how it is.

”Those who came as reinforcements, please eat and rest immediately. Those who were here from the start, take turns eating and resting. Those who have free hands, please collect items that can be thrown with the |Catapults|. You can tear down empty houses. I give permission to go out from the [East gate] to pick up stones.”

I, who had been demoted from [Grand Duke] to “lookalike,” volunteered to pull a cargo wagon out of the [East gate] and collect stones. For the time being, even though I was demoted, [Kenze] came along as my guard. However.

”LOOKALIKE, BRING THE WAGON QUICKLY, THERE ARE MANY STONES HERE”

Did you demote me in your consciousness too?

”NO, IT’S THE SAME AS USUAL”

Now that I think about it, that might be true. Her attitude hasn’t changed since I bought her. Just like Pamela, even though I’m the master, the attitude she shows me is always arrogant.

At the meeting earlier, there was talk of escaping. But the conversation split over what to do with the civilians. Whether to take them with us, or leave them here.

But the Maya gang burned a third of them to death. If we can’t take them and leave them behind, it won’t end without a cost. The possibility of becoming [Slavery] is high, but a significant number will be killed.

On the other hand, if we flee together, they are slow, and after our rear guard soldiers are taken out, they will only be prey for the pursuing [Enemy soldiers]. The preceding soldiers would have an easier time fleeing, but if we did that, no one would ever come to this base to stop the invasion from [Larland] again.

There are other reasons, but we decided to defend the city of [Trabius] to the death.

Just as Thomas said, we saw fires in the hearths at midnight, and drums were sounded at dawn.

 ”They’re coming! The west gate!”

Voices could be heard from the corridor above the wall, and the battle began.

I am the operator for the [Type 98Golems] and the instructor for the [Mage]s. And various other things. I take the |fixed-wing drone| and [Excalibur] out of the wagon, and set up camp with the other [Mage]s at the very back of the west gate square. Only that young girl who flies the |fixed-wing drone| is at the top of the north gate where Thomas is.

”I’m seriously about to pee myself.”

The lady who toyed with the military envoy is fidgeting and shaking her hips, but I completely agree. My crotch feels itchy.

Suddenly, war cries could be heard from beyond the castle wall.

”|Catapults| team, aim southwest, distance one hundred, prepare normal shells—”

Even without a megaphone, Thomas’s voice resonates through the city.

 ”FIRE—”

With a bang sound of a [Rope] being removed by a wooden mallet, the pillar pivots on its fulcrum, and the stone that had been loaded at the tip flies out. Twenty |Catapults| fire stones one after another just like that.

 ”Keep firing!”

Once they pull the pillar that threw the stone back with a [Rope], they load the next stone into the tip basket.

 ”Arrows are coming! Shields ready!”

Such an order flies down from above the west gate. Apparently, the enemy is going to loose arrows.

We don’t defend with shields; we hide behind the wagons. I think to myself that I wish we had large [artificial shishi-odoshi (deer scare)], but there is little [magic thread] in this land, so I had given up.

As soon as we hid, arrows rained down, and I could hear the sound of them thudding into the ground, wagons, and walls. The |Catapults| soldiers, as ordered, used their shields to block the arrows and immediately began preparing for the next stone throw.

As we continued exchanging long-range attacks, the sun rose.

 ”|Catapults| team, numbers 1, 3, 5, prepare fire pots.”

An order I’m hearing for the first time. When large pots wrapped in cloth are set into the |Catapults|, the cloth is soaked in oil and set on fire, then launched. Whether the inside of the pot is also oil, it hits the ground, shatters, and the fire spreads. Whether something tragic happened, I could hear screams from beyond the wall.

As the sun got higher, the number of incoming arrows decreased, and the number of stones we fired with the |Catapults| also decreased.

”North gate, thirty meters west, many [Golems].”

”West gate, twenty meters south, ladders.”

Such voices began to be heard.

”This is scary,” one of the [Mage] girls said.

These girls have probably been through a certain amount of life-or-death situations. Even so, are they still afraid?

”North gate, west. Three small [Golems], over the wall, intrusion.”

My turn. I activate the [Golems], get on a horse, and head for the north gate. Since there is no remote device, the operating range is only fifty meters, so I cannot move away from the [Golems].

There! Three small [Golems] are trying to move the dummies and short-range |Catapults| placed at the north gate. Our [Type 98Golems] run up to them, punch one away, and grab the other two and slam them into the ground. After that, just to be sure, I twist off their heads so they can’t move.

As soon as I finish the work, I return to my original position and turn them off. The sortie time is eight minutes per go. There’s no time to remove and refill them. Even being generous, I can only sortie three times. The spare [Amber] was burnt.

If I went outside the wall and dived into a place with a lot of people, I could bury dozens of them at once. But the scope of this activity is limited to inside the wall. It’s for countermeasures against [Golems] like this.

By the afternoon, when I was hungry, the number of [Enemy soldiers] and [Golems] crossing the wall increased, and our [Golems]’ [Mana] finally ran out. The soldiers were initially cut down by the [Cavalry soldiers] inside the city, but gradually they leaked through, some trying to move the |Catapults| at the gate, others coming at the [Soldier]s of the long-range |Catapults|.

The [Mage]s deal with them with [Coilgun]s or go out to intercept them with captured small [Golems].

Even after midday, the soldiers crossing the wall don’t stop. Occasionally, [Golems] are mixed in.

I have no choice but to take up the heirloom, [Excalibur].

[Golems] who are preoccupied with moving the |Catapults| are easy, but the ones who have come in to kill people are troublesome. They are clearly trying to beat me to death. Even so, their [Golems] technology is immature, so they move slowly.

I manage to paralyze them, but it’s a hassle to open the hatch on the back of their necks and reset them. There were several times I couldn’t make the reset in time and was shaken off, and in those cases, I would be thrown from the [Golems] and hit my whole body hard.

When the sun began to tilt, the people coming over the wall stopped.

 ”Everyone, are you still alive?”

I gather them at the original location and call out to the [Mage]s.

”One person is missing, but she was around the south gate earlier.”

”Then not a single person is missing.”

In this place, our canteens and bread are placed. Let’s replenish moisture and nutrients while we can.

Even so, a hundred enemy corpses are lying in the west gate square, but even that is only one-twentieth. Compared to that, about five of the long-range |Catapults| [Soldier]s are squatting. That means one-tenth of the team has dropped out.

 It doesn’t pay off.

As I sat down and was eating bread, there was a shadow on the wall again. When our [Archers] shot an arrow, it seemed to hit, and they fell inside from there. But, from behind the shadow that disappeared, several shadows appeared.

”THE PEOPLE WHO WERE STOPPING US ON THE WALL, ARE THEY GONE?”

Where had she disappeared to until then? [Kenze] stood next to me and stated a prediction of the situation I didn’t really want to hear.

 ”Here.”

When I threw the bread, she caught it and started nibbling.

 ”It might be impossible soon.”

”Yeah. Even so, if we’re still alive, let’s give them one last go.”

 ”At a time like this!”

”Because it’s a time like this.”

 [Kenze] smiles coolly.

 ”Then, I will too.”

The lady who toyed with the military envoy raised her hand and said to me.

 ”Me too.”

All the remaining [Mage]s raised their hands. I’m happy, but I’ve climbed another step on the stairs of scum, haven’t I.

”It’s a time like this, accept it.”

If [Kenze] says so too, then the chances of survival were low anyway.

”I’m actually a serious person, you know.”

”WHAT ARE YOU SAYING. COME ON, LET’S GO.”

My whole body hurts from the bruising, so I can’t move as I’d like. From the looks of it, I apparently have to defeat over a dozen [Enemy soldiers] by myself. I have no choice but to do what I can with [Coilgun]s and [Fireball]s.

I stood up, my arm grasped by [Kenze].

Will I die here? Well, if my son inherits the [Grand Duke], that’s fine.

I remembered, original Larry-kun, I probably won’t be able to summon [Henrietta]. She might be a total pervert, but she’s a good woman, so please bear with it.

That’s right, Larry-kun, rest assured. A man’s true calling, I’ve left behind plenty of your genes.

 It was fun.

”Can’t be helped, I’ll take care of you all together.”

There was a high-pitched cry, and I can’t help but feel like I caught the eye of the [Enemy soldiers].

 ”In return, use contraception properly.”

”No way, I’ll get pregnant, and take responsibility and force my way into the [Grand Principality].”

”That’s right, if they are the [Grand Duke]’s [Children], their future should be secure.”

”Eh, I’m a [Virgin], though, how can I make [Children]?”

”You liar, you were doing it with a [Soldier] last night.”

 They are quite free-spirited.

”Well, a life that might flicker out at any moment. Best we make it interesting, eh.”

”Wait, so I’m not a Grand Duke anymore? My son just took over?”

”You’ve got to be kidding me, what a scam.”

”No way, and you’re still alive!”

 ”There goes my golden ticket…”

”Ahhh, I’m going to die a virgin!”

They chattered away, laughing, each lost in their own selfish complaints.

I pulled a fresh gun-belt from the equipment crate and tossed one to each of the women. Finally, I slung mine over my shoulder, shouldered the Coilgun, and looked toward the incoming Enemy soldiers. There were quite a few of them, and they were already starting to form ranks.

 ”Let’s move.”

 ”You bet.”

 ””We’re coming too.””
