Chapter 563 Turmoil on the Southern Continent ④

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Nada-Rume was a beautiful woman with dark skin. She left her subordinate and “wife” impersonator, Kuku, at the inn. Then, she slipped out the window into the night streets. Even at this late hour, this was Goldmika. It was the capital of the Aurumcame Governor State. Normally, people would be outside enjoying the cool night air.

But tonight, the “authorities” had ordered people to stay inside. Not a single soul walked the streets. No one sat outside on a balcony to cool down. This made it easy for Nada-Rume to hide. But an eerie silence hung over the city.

When everything is quiet, even a tiny sound can give her away. She moved with great care. She kept her footsteps quiet and her ears open. She stayed deep in the shadows. She kept her whole body ready to react to any noise. Her destination was the Governor’s manor.

She did not plan to break inside. She just wanted to see the area around it. The military barracks and The Guard’s outposts were near the manor. By watching them, she could check exactly what they were worried about.

Or, if she found The Guard on the way, she could follow them. Hearing them talk would be perfect. But she would not force it. Either way, she needed to know their numbers. She also needed to know how alert they were. Once she knew that, she could make some guesses.

She avoided the main streets and stuck to the alleys. Soon, she heard footsteps and voices. Four people were coming. Nada-Rume crept around behind them. She hid around the corner of a building and listened.

”Is this spot alright?” one guard asked. His tone was short and professional.

”Yeah, the other squad should be coming along soon,” replied the second. Her voice was calm and steady.

”If they don’t show, we report it immediately, right?” a third asked. He sounded tense.

”That’s right. Keep your magic ready,” she directed.

”Good grief…” the last man sighed. He sounded completely exhausted.

”Good,” Nada-Rume whispered to herself. She had found her exact target: The Guard. Luckily, they were planning to meet another unit. They seemed to relax a little as they kept talking.

”Don’t give me that ‘good grief,’” the woman snapped. Her voice was sharp and strict. “Do you even understand how serious this is?”

”That’s why I said ‘good grief,’ because I don’t,” the man shot back. He raised his voice. “Don’t get so angry.”

”Yeah, yeah. At this rate, we won’t last until morning—” another said. He sounded very tired.

”W-what’s that supposed to mean?” the first man stuttered. He sounded angry and defensive. “It’s like you’re saying I’m the only one who doesn’t get it. You were the ones saying the ‘superior officer’s briefing was insufficient’ too!”

It was a short talk, but Nada-Rume understood right away. Based on their words, there was definitely a major problem.

The first man did not fully understand his orders. But he still had to stay in touch with the other units. He even had to follow strict reporting rules1 (likely shooting a fire-magic flare). He must have practiced the rules again and again before his patrol.

This proved the higher-ups saw the matter as very serious. It is tiring to explain things to someone who is not smart. In other words, a big problem had occurred. It was a problem so bad they had to keep it hidden from the public.

Then there was the woman’s mention of “until morning.” Usually, patrols should take turns. Long patrols make soldiers lose focus. Above all, they exhaust the soldiers. If they were doing it anyway, they must be very short on people.

Also, the four-person group of two men and two women was strange. Usually, night patrols had two men. One person alone is dangerous. And pairing men and women together was unusual. Plus, larger groups could make citizens nervous. It could also waste manpower.

They would never use such a strange setup unless they were short on people. If the other squad had the same setup, then… Just as she reached that thought—

 ”KYAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!”

 ”WOOOOOOORRRRRGHHHH!!!!”

A woman’s scream and a man’s roar broke the quiet night. The sound echoed clearly through the empty streets. The Guard unit reacted instantly. They snapped into formation.

”Tch…!” the lead guard clicked his tongue.

”It’s from over there!” the woman shouted. “Probably the squad we were supposed to meet!”

”Move out, now!” the man barked.

 ”Report it, hurry!” she ordered.

 ”I know!” he yelled back.

Whoosh… With a sharp sound, the clumsy man shot a magic fire flare into the night sky. They did not even wait to check it. All four ran toward the voices.

Nada-Rume watched them go. She bit her lip because the soldiers were so skilled. Their chatting was sloppy. But they handled their duties with great speed. Normally, that would be a good thing. As enemies, it was just a nuisance.

If the others were the same, many soldiers would rush here. She wanted to see what caused the scream and roar. But it was too dangerous. Nada-Rume did not hesitate. She left the area and ran back toward the inn.

She already had the information she needed. People were forbidden from walking at night because monsters were hunting. The reason they did not tell the people was to stop a panic. The heavy guard was because the monsters were hard to hunt.

And the four-person, two-man, two-woman setup… It was a basic formation designed for hunting them. Their predecessors had perfected it. It worked whether one monster appeared or a pair attacked. That meant, right now, this town was—

Nada-Rume broke into a cold sweat as she sprinted through the dark streets. She was careful not to be seen by the incoming soldiers. But her heart was racing faster than before.

Usually, victims attacked by them could not even scream. The fact that they screamed and roared meant something else. They had actually managed to stay in their four-person formation.

She never thought it would come to this. If she had known, she would never have left her sister-figure, Kuku, alone at the inn.

Who would have thought the tavern owner was right? That rental-camel guy had given her some dirty advice. “You should just crawl into bed with your lady and fall asleep early.” But it was not a cheap joke. It was truly good advice.

The smart people probably realized it already. But the higher-ups were trying hard to keep it secret. If the city fell into chaos and people ran away, the monsters would scatter with them. That would cause even worse damage.

Where did they come from? And why now? The questions were endless. But right now, she had to make sure Kuku was safe above all else.

Nada-Rume gripped the “charm” in her pocket as she returned to the inn. Naturally, she climbed back through the window. And there, she saw…

 ”……”

”Oh my, not a man… today,” the intruder purred. His voice was smooth and hypnotic. “Tonight is quite a luxurious dinner.”

 ”…!”

Kuku was kneeling with a blank expression. A man was looking down at her. He was not just any man. He was an incredibly beautiful man who looked like he stepped out of a painting. His voice was a sweet whisper. A thick, heavy scent hung in the air.

 ”An Incubus…!” Nada-Rume gasped.

”Correct,” the Incubus replied with a lazy smile. “So, you know you can’t resist, right?”

It was clearly a Succubus. Nada-Rume felt her mind start to slip away. The strength was leaving her arms and legs. Run! Run! Run! An alarm screamed in her head. But her body would not obey.

This was the power of the Succubus. It was a monster that learned human speech to hunt humans. No one could meet a succubus of the opposite s*x and not be charmed. But…

”Ghh…!” she grunted, fighting to stay awake.

”…Hm? A bit less effective than expected,” the Incubus mused.

That was likely because of “that man.” She had been sharing a bed with him. He could stand toe-to-toe with the best nuns of the Church of Demon-Subjugation. Nada-Rume managed to hold onto her mind. She glared sharply at the Incubus.

”Well, it’s fine,” the Incubus dismissed. He looked back at Kuku. “If you watch my ‘meal,’ you’ll be my captive in no time.”

That was the Incubus’s mistake. Even for a succubus, its power weakens if it is not one-on-one. But it had chosen Kuku, the pure girl. It ignored Nada-Rume, who was covered in a man’s scent.

The Incubus leaned forward. He reached out to touch Kuku’s chin. She was kneeling at his feet. He was trying to suck the life force out of her. That was when Nada-Rume lunged.

 ”YAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!” she screamed.

 ”GUOOOOOOOOOOOOO!?!?” the Incubus roared.

Yes, she literally “lunged.” She drove the “charm” in her hand right into the monster’s wide-open backside. The charm was the “Small Ddo-Buddy Cannon.” She pushed it with all her might. And then—

I will not share the details. But the Incubus was engulfed in light and blown away into nothingness. The beam pierced through the Incubus. It broke the inn’s ceiling. It shot high into the night sky, lighting up the heavens.

 ”Kuku, Kuku!” Nada-Rume cried out.

”Fuh… ♡ Oh? Nada-nee-sama…” Kuku murmured. Her eyes were fluttery and sweet.

”We are running, Kuku!” Nada-Rume ordered.

Nada-Rume shook her sister-figure’s shoulder to wake her up. She hurriedly prepared to leave. After making such a loud noise, The Guard would be here in no time.

”I never imagined I’d be attacked by Nada-nee-sama… But, I suppose you’re right,” Kuku giggled. Her voice was light and airy. “We are playing husband and wife, after all… ♡”

”Don’t say such stupid things!” Nada-Rume barked. “We’re leaving right now!!”

 ”Oh? Y-yes…” Kuku chirped.

She barked at her sister-figure. Kuku was pouting her lips as if to kiss. Nada-Rume shoved the bag of travel money into her hands. Then, she picked Kuku up and jumped out the window. They disappeared into the dark night. Dangerous undercover missions meant you always had to be ready to escape.

Thus, they had finished gathering their information safely. However, a huge problem was waiting for them. Soon, they would be agonizing over a country-shaking issue: the massive outbreak of succubi…

 —

 Summary:

Nada-Rume investigates the eerily silent capital of Goldmika, uncovering evidence of a widespread, hidden succubus infestation and a military force struggling to contain it. Her reconnaissance is interrupted by an Incubus attacking Kuku, forcing Nada-Rume to use an unconventional weapon to save her sister-figure. The pair escapes into the night, now facing the reality of a massive, escalating threat to the country.

 —

 Trivia:

The Guard’s night patrol formation is a specific, traditional tactic used to counter succubi.

Patrols are currently extended to “until morning” due to severe manpower shortages.

The “charm” Nada-Rume carries is a potent magical item capable of destroying even an Incubus.

The Tavern Owner’s advice was not just idle gossip but a warning based on the reality of the city’s danger.

Nada-Rume’s resistance to the Incubus’s charm is attributed to her intimacy with a high-level partner mentioned in previous events.
