Volume 3 Chapter 50 The End of the War
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Let’s go.”
So this is a suicide charge.
”Aye, sounds right.”
”We’re with you.”
Kenze and the women are ready to come too. There must be a sergeant or someone like that with the enemy ahead. They have started to form lines.
”You lot, get back!”
I shout to the soldiers on my front right. They are still getting the long-range |Catapults ready for the next shot.
Thomas may have worked hard to gather and train them. But in the end, they were just farmers and fishermen, not real soldiers.
They were not like me or the female Mage, who had been a soldier from the start. Maybe they heard me, maybe not. Still, they broke away and ran toward the homes behind us.
The last one looked back. He shouted, gave me a salute, and ran after the others.
Good.
I check around me, then face forward again. The enemy soldiers are getting shields from somewhere. Damn it.
If they make a shield wall, I will take fewer of them down with me.
I look back at the Mages standing in a row. I catch Kenze’s eye and signal him. Then we start to move.
We slowly go faster. By the time my Coilgun points at the men ahead, we are running at full speed.
The first cartridge Coilguns could only reach five meters. The new one in my hand can reach twenty.
When I can see the lines on a soldier’s face, I pull the triGarr.
A dry sound comes from the muzzle under my waist. A dozen sharp iron needles, each five centimeters long, fly out like a shotgun blast.
They hit the man in the face. The life leaves his eyes at once.
At the same time, the women fire their Coilguns together.
The men in the front line fall. The women reload, set the next cartridge, and fire again.
Even when shields come up, their feet are still open.
When a shield man falls from a shot to the legs, we aim through the gap behind him. We repeat this cruel work and take many lives.
The soldiers who were trying to form lines are mostly on the ground now. But more men keep coming down from the wall behind them.
I keep firing as I run to the line of bodies. Then I stop.
I look for anyone still alive. One of the bodies suddenly jumps up.
The man who had been shouting orders charges at me with a sword.
I get why he is doing it.
He has a hell of a look on his face.
But Kenze jumps in from my side. He grabs the man in a blur and cuts his throat at once with a daGarr knife.
Blood sprays out in a mist.
”My bad.”
This is a battlefield.
What now? The soldiers who came down from the wall seem to understand something. Our Coilguns have a set range, and their shields can block some shots.
”This is bad.”
Well, half of those shields are just wood. If we get close enough, our iron needles may go through them.
The soldiers still look scared. But they crowd together, lock their shields tight, and slowly come forward.
If they pull us into a messy close fight, we are dead in a moment.
”Is this it?”
Oh?
The ground shakes.
So the south gate was broken at last.
I look back and see heavy cavalry charging toward us. Their armor has the crest of Viscount Veresk from the border town.
They rush through the space in front of us and crash into the enemy soldiers. Men fly through the air with their shields and swords, as if a car hit them.
The cavalry smashes into the enemy, then turns and comes back again without losing speed. One rider leaves the group and comes straight to me.
”What are you doing, soldier? Retreat!”
The Viscount lifts his face mask and shouts.
”What about the townspeople?”
”They left through the East gate and are heading for Twanste.”
”Not north?”
”Aye. The survivors from the other units are with them.”
I see.
Twanste is better for the people here. They speak the same language there.
Also, the road north is long. If they run that way, there are swamps on both sides.
”We’ll take the rear guard (shingari). Get going!”1
”Are you insane? You can’t make outsiders do rear guard (shingari) duty!”
The rear guard (shingari) is the force at the back during a retreat. They take the worst losses because they face the enemy while everyone else runs.
I cannot let a noble from another country, the Empire of Rus, do that.
”What are you jabberin’ about? You think a Rus noble’s gonna get cut down by some backwater warlord?”
”That proud noble still isn’t doing a thing to The Boltechino, is he?”
”Quiet! Just get going already! Women and Children here are only in the way.”
”But—”
Before I could finish, Kenze grabbed my arm.
”For now, let’s fall back to the house.”
I had no choice. But I was not going to let them take the rear guard (shingari).
I shout that back. I start signaling the women to fall back to the house.
Then it happens.
A brown shadow.
It is above the wall. It is half-round and about as wide as a person with both arms spread. It even has eyes.
”A Giant?”
A small black shadow flies above it.
A fixed-wing drone.
I forgot.
Yesterday, from the sky, I saw a group making dust beyond the green belt. I thought it was Maya’s reinforcements.
It was Schweilitz’s army.
Instructor Sergei made it in time.
”We won.”
”Eh?”
Kenze keeps pulling my arm. But I stay frozen and stare at the wall.
”What are you doing? Move!”
The Viscount shouts again.
”Viscount, get the horseback unit out of there. They’re in the way.”
He does not seem to understand. So I point to the top of the wall.
”Those are Schweilitz’s Type 95Golems.”
At that moment, one Golem comes over the battlement. Two more show parts of their bodies behind it.
”Tch, they came at the perfect time.”
The Viscount looks unhappy. Still, he takes a whistle from his pocket and blows it.
His horseback unit turns at once and moves away from the enemy.
”Well-trained.”
”Bloody right. Let’s fall back.”
He understands fast.
We retreat to the edge of the square, to the wall of a private house. Then the Golems begin their killing before our eyes.
Some of the women start crying. Maybe the fear finally broke through.
The Viscount gets off his horse and walks over.
”Here.”
He throws me a canteen. I thank him, take a drink, and find only water inside.
”Water? If it’s Rus, I thought you fought drunk.”
”That’s just the militia lads who are scared of dying.”
I swallow the water and the bitter taste in my mouth.
”Can I give this to someone?”
He says, “Go ahead,” so I hand it to the woman beside me.
”Tch, so it ain’t booze.”
She grumbles and passes the canteen to the next woman.
”Looks like it’s ending.”
The Type 95Golems have crushed most of the enemy troops. Now they start clearing the Catapults from in front of the west gate.
”Thanks.”
I thank the Viscount with all my heart for coming to help us.
”Well, yeah.”
After a short pause, he speaks again.
”I’m getting married.”
”You had a kid?”
The Viscount’s face changes.
”Me. I mean me. Quit messing around. I’m taking a Primary Wife.”
Eh?
Kenze, who is beside me, looks just as lost.
”Old guy, thanks for the water.”
Maybe the canteen reached the end of the line. The last girl throws it back to the Viscount.
”Who are you calling an old guy!”
The Viscount catches it and looks very annoyed.
”I’m only twenty-one, you know!”
Everything around us is a mess. But we all go silent.
”””Whaaaat!”””
The women shout together.
The Viscount looks at me like he wants help. But I am shouting the same thing in my head.
His hair is a little thin. His gums have pulled back, so his teeth look loose.
And he is twenty-one?
What!?
”I see. Congratulations. So, who is the bride?”
”The sixth daughter of the Emperor’s younger brother. She escaped the killing at The Boltechino in the Second Imperial Capital. A relative of mine gave her shelter. She is twenty-six, though. Older than me.”
When they hear her age, the women let out a sound of relief.
You lot are rude.
Still, I get it.
”Heh, then you’ll be close to the Emperor too.”
”No, I must not say it too loudly, but I am declaring independence.”
War matters, of course. But people say losing is not the only problem. What comes after can be even worse.
The Empire of Rus is in bad shape. In the Turkish Sea area, rebellion would not be strange.
They have many lands there. Tax money has fallen hard, and they pushed the loss onto the nobles.
That seems to have caused anger. If we are talking about the Turkish Sea coast, maybe this is the secret move Frontier Count Pugachev spoke of.
”But you’re a Viscount. Will that be okay?”
The noble ranks go Prince, Duke, Marquis, Count, Viscount, Baron. Usually, Counts and above are the high nobles.
I thought no one would take a lower noble seriously if he declared independence.
”My land is as rich as a Marquis’s land. And I have more money than the nearby nobles because of trade with the Grand Principality and the Finnic tribes.”
But among nobles, rank still matters. Skill alone is not enough.
He plans to call himself a Marquis. Then he will make it real by marrying the Emperor’s brother’s daughter, since only a Marquis or above could wed her.
”When a family has been noble for a long time, all the nearby nobles are tied by marriage. So even if I force independence, war will not start at once. The Empire also lacks the power to crush me. In fact, some people say they want to be annexed.”
”I see. Then tell me what I can do from my country.”
We are neighbors. I also owe him for this.
So I meant it when I said that.
”No, I do not need anything.”
”You can’t say that after coming all the way here.”
”Quite right. That was poorly said. I do not need anything from you.”
”What, are you picking a fight?”
”Listen. You are not the ruler of the Grand Principality Fee. Your son Reinhardt is.”
”No, no, no. I’m alive. I have no plan to hand the country to my son.”
”Regrettably, your funeral is already over. Reinhardt’s ceremony as Grand Duke is also finished. Both Schweilitz and Rus have accepted him.”
”Huh?”
Schweilitz was one thing.
But Rus too?
I had been inside Rus for almost two months. I even met Frontier Count Pugachev, the number two man there.
What is going on?
”Anyway, it becomes a huge pain if you stay alive and come back.”
I could sort of understand what he meant.
Once a group loses its leader and starts moving under the next one, it is hard to turn back. That much is easy to imagine.
It felt like my own words had come back to hit me. I had said something like this to the Emperor of Rus not long ago.
I see.
So that Emperor felt the same way too.
But I would not accept it.
Yes, there were times when being a ruler felt choking. I knew there were things I could not do.
I knew I was not free.
More than anything, I knew I would slowly lose the right to do the things I liked.
If you asked whether I had worked hard to earn this place, maybe I had not. It felt more like I had fallen into owning a country through luck.
But now that country had slipped out of my hands.
I could not accept that.
”Well, ain’t it fine? Your son will inherit it. Besides, being a ruler’s a real pain, y’know?”
Hearing that from a man about to become a ruler himself made my blood boil.
As we talked, the Catapults were moved aside. The gates opened, and horseback and foot soldiers came in.
”Besides, you’re pretty loose with women, aren’t you? Doesn’t it suit you better not to be a ruler?”
I wanted to punch him.
But his horseback unit had finished gathering. So I saved that for later.
Then something surprising came through the west gate.
It was a pitch-black carriage pulled by a pitch-black horse. Only officers of the Kingdom of Schweilitz military and above could use it.
As it came toward us, even the Viscount’s horseback unit moved left and right. The thing gave off a strange, dark feeling.
The carriage door opened, and Iri jumped out.
The young mana-user I found in Yoghess.
She landed on the ground, shouted, “Masterrr!” and ran to throw her arms around me.
I was only using her for my own reasons. So it felt strange to be loved this much.
After her came Olga and Elena, the mother and daughter I had picked up in Rus.
Then the three hags2 climbed out.
”You’re well liked, aren’t you.”
”You worked us hard, boy.”
”As your reward, we shall make sure to deflower you properly.”
The usual hags.
’The Grannies are saying it too, so please, Master.’
The girl holding onto me looked up with a wide, sweet smile. She looked pure as snow.
But through telepathy, she was pushing her “ero-brat mode” as hard as she could.
’I’m not an ero-brat. I’m just a normal girl.’
I do not know where she learned it, but she had even learned to act shy.
Well, she was cute. So when I patted her head, she looked happy.
She pressed her face against me.
But then Major Sonya and Helbert, the middle-aged man, came out from behind the hags. Iri sensed my tension at once.
Her face turned serious, and she stood by my side.
”Hey, I thought you were dead.”
What rubbish.
Helbert, the middle-aged man, saluted as he spoke to me.
”Who was it that decided I was dead?”
I asked in a hollow voice and saluted back.
”Who knows. More importantly, let me explain the current situation. And you there, the one set to become ruler of the Moscow Principality, come join us too.”
He called to the stunned Viscount as well.
Viscount, did you not say not to speak of that too loudly? Your secret is already out in the open.
Helbert, the middle-aged man’s explanation was this.
It seemed Maya got ahead of herself and tried to steal Larland. She went to many warlords, planned to cut out Schweilitz and the Grand Principality, and tried to make herself Queen.
This caused a lot of anger.
Then the Slesco warlords finally began to move. They had stayed quiet in the old land of the Marquis of Silesia, said to be the richest land in old Larland.
They agreed to ignore the Proton Order that had fled to them. In return, they would hand over Marc von Harritz, the grandson of Marquis Haritz, to Schweilitz.
They had been hiding him.
They were also promised many jobs after the new nation was made. Because of that, they got religious groups, including the Universal Church, to agree to ban land ownership and Slavery in Larland.
”Whether the invasion of the Grand Principality is ignored or not… shouldn’t that be for me to decide?”
I was truly angry, so I said it out loud.
”The one who agreed to ignore it is the current head of the Fee Grand Principality, His Highness Grand Duke Reinhardt von Fee.”
He answered with a calm face.
Damn.
There is no way a child under two years old could agree to that.
For a moment, I felt I had seen one reason they wanted me dead.
Then King Heinrich IV of Schweilitz entered Larland with the real Queen Thiele and ten thousand royal soldiers.
Almost all the warlords joined him. Even the trade-based warlords in the royal capital gave up.
Only Warlord Maya remained.
When they saw they could not steal Larland, they tried to grow their own lands instead. They moved to seize the former Proton Order lands, which now had no owner, and planned to declare independence.
And, Helbert said, they also moved to wipe us out, since the Fee Grand Principality was in the way.
”As expected, you can’t handle talks without military power. People won’t move for slogans or Mikoshi alone.”
Helbert, the middle-aged man, was clearly proud of Schweilitz’s military strength.
Beside him, Viscount Veresk nodded hard.
Honestly, the same was true in my old world too.
This world looked like the Middle Ages. Earth was the twenty-first century.
But some things never changed.
”Was everything okay in Pannonia?”
”Ah, His Majesty handled that himself. He spoke with Minister Nizar, who says he is the deputy of the Turku Emperor, and got them to pull back their troops.”
So that was why they could focus all their strength here.
”His Majesty is now helping build a new government in the new royal capital of Larland. It does not look like you will meet him soon, Larry, so you will return to the Schweilitz royal capital and write a mountain of reports.”
Eh, I thought.
But it was too late.
The Major had already moved behind me. She grabbed my hand and drained all my mana in one shot.
Kenze was there.
At the edge of my fading sight, I saw Kenze fall to the ground.
Just what I would expect from the Major. She misses nothing.
”All right, you lot. Join Isabella and drag Larry to the royal capital.”
The Major was speaking to the ladies.
”We can do whatever we want, right? You promised—”
I heard the girl’s voice fade away.
Then my mind went dark.
