Chapter 308 Combat Form
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
This was Aki’s first battle since reaching the Demon King-class (the highest rank of power). With a weaker Demon King-class fighter like Kokabiel as his opponent, he planned to use this chance to test how strong he was now.
In short, Aki did not plan to use his Boosted Gear.
In a few short moments, he had used every bit of energy inside his body. When he first reached the Demon King-class, he hadn’t noticed much change, but as time passed, the special qualities of this level began to show. When he gave it his all, this feeling became even stronger. All the different energies and bloodlines inside him — except for the Qi, which was still stuck just before the threshold of the Immortal Path — were starting to blend together.
The outer sign of this was Aki’s current Devil form… though he couldn’t really call it just a Devil form anymore. Since it was a mix of many energies and bloodlines, he wasn’t sure what to call it, so he simply named it his “Combat Form.”
Honestly, the name didn’t matter; it was just a way to tell this state apart from his normal look as a neat, young boy.
Aki’s current Combat Form was no longer that of an Ancient Devil. His already thin Ancient Devil genes had lost their main place under the pressure of his other bloodlines. All that remained was a single, pitch-black tail-whip, and even that had lost its old wild, jagged look. It had become a thin, elegant, black-and-red limb that looked soft and bouncy, almost asking to be touched. Only when filled with Mana did it turn into a weapon as hard as iron.
His jet-black hair now had thin streaks of red and silver-white; maybe, once the merging was complete, it would be entirely black-red or light red. The three Crests that had once been on his left cheek were gone, replaced by a single, glowing, blue jewel-like tear mole under his eye. The tear mole, a result of his Charm Talent, added a sense of mystery and attraction to Aki’s already handsome face.
Irina and Xenovia, who had been scared before by Kokabiel’s strong power, now found their attention pulled toward Aki without meaning to. Their expressions grew dreamy, and a soft, pink flush spread across their faces.
After reaching the Demon King-class, Aki had grown taller again, finally passing the one-meter-eighty mark. Now, with his Combat Form fully active, his height grew even more, making him tower over the large Kokabiel.
But the biggest change was his wings.
His wide Bat Wings had changed into twelve separate limbs: three pairs of pitch-black, shiny Wings, and three pairs of thin, scythe-like Devil wings. They were not split into halves but placed in alternating pairs. The highest were a pair of pitch-black, shining Wings, followed by a pair of Devil wings, and then a pair of Fallen Angel Wings, repeating in a layered, steady pattern.
Aki looked at his reflection in a mirror made from Mana and felt quite happy. It would be perfect if these small flaws disappeared once all his power was fully blended together.
As Aki let out all his power, Kokabiel grew more and more afraid. No matter how much of a “watered-down” Demon King-class he was, he had survived the Three-race war — he knew the true level of Aki’s power by now. Kokabiel felt a mix of jealousy, hatred, and a fear he didn’t want to admit.
His eyes kept moving toward Aki’s left hand. Not seeing that bright red glove, he relaxed a little. That made sense. Reaching the Balance Breaker state of a Sacred Gear was no easy task — especially for a Sacred Gear like that. The Balance Breaker depended on the user’s will, or rather, their feelings. If someone had a will strong enough to change reality, even a normal person could trigger the Balance Breaker mode of a Sacred Gear. On the other hand, without that, no amount of raw power would be enough.
But Aki’s connection with his Sacred Gear was different; he could force the Balance Breaker mode using his own Mana. Kokabiel didn’t know this, nor did he understand it.
So, he pointed his giant Light Spear at Aki and sneered: “Even if you’re Demon King-class, you’re just trash that reached that level a moment ago. Do you really think you can beat me?”
Aki gave a small smile, staying silent. He didn’t plan to break Kokabiel’s illusion. If the enemy had no wish to fight, the coming battle would be pointless, and Aki would not be able to test his current power.
Seeing Aki’s calm, easy manner, Kokabiel grew even angrier. He felt Aki was looking down on him. In truth, his gut feeling was right — Aki did not put much importance on this fight; to him, it was more like an experiment.
BOOM!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The giant Light Spear came down from the sky, its terrible power carving a round hole dozens of meters wide where Aki had stood.
As the fight between Aki and Kokabiel began, the battle between Yuuto’s group and the Stray Priest (a priest who had gone mad with power) also started for real. Valper was a technician, not a fighter. The mad priest was certainly fierce, using three Holy Swords, but one man could not hold out against a three-on-one attack.
Realizing his underling was in trouble, Kokabiel raised his hand to call two fierce magical beasts.
As two light-green, giant Magic circles faded, a Hellhound wrapped in flames appeared on the battlefield. The Hellhound was also A-rank, but its huge size made it even more dangerous. Yuuto’s group had to split up, with two of them moving to deal with the summoned beast, turning the battlefield into a series of one-on-one fights.
However, the crazed Stray Priest and the Hellhound were terribly strong; Yuuto’s group was immediately pushed into a hard struggle.
Deep inside the crater, Aki spread his twelve pairs of wings, took a moment to check on them, and, seeing that Yuuto’s group was not in immediate danger, decided not to step in. He could not play babysitter forever. To grow, one must face problems and beat strong enemies.
This fight was hard, but not without a small hope for them. Besides, he doubted Yuuto wanted him to interfere.
Watching the two Familiars (summoned magical creatures) that Kokabiel had called, a thought suddenly hit Aki: he should try to get a Familiar of his own.1 Familiars that could be called at will were certainly useful.
Come to think of it, there were also human-shaped Familiars. So, could this handy Familiar Contract be used on people?
If it were possible, then giving it to Rias, Sona Sitri, Himejima Akeno…
”Ahem.” Aki flapped his wings, blowing away the dust and those strange thoughts at the same time.
Still, the idea of finding a chance to visit the Forest of Familiars to see if he could tame one that caught his eye was something he quietly noted in his mind.
After calling the two Hellhounds, Kokabiel stopped paying attention to the other side; he didn’t have the extra energy.
Looking at the nearly unharmed Aki, Kokabiel’s face turned very ugly. Light Spears were supposed to weaken Devils, and although he could feel the power of a Fallen Angel inside his enemy, it should not have been useless.
Aki’s body was already absurdly tough, and his changed twelve pairs of wings had a strong weakening effect on the Mana qualities of both Fallen Angels and Devils. So, while focusing on defense, even Kokabiel’s full-force strike had not managed to break through his guard.
Aki saw what Kokabiel was thinking, but he had no plan to explain it to his enemy.
Defense tested, next came attack power.
As he pulled back his twelve strange wings and tail, Aki felt a little weaker, though not by much. He was more used to fighting in his human form, finding that his various martial arts and magic flowed better. That was just a mental thing; in truth, his Combat Form gave out more power and was technically stronger.
Though he felt a bit weaker, it did not stop Aki from pushing around Kokabiel — that watered-down Demon King-class — and beating him black and blue. Kokabiel was a warrior who had survived the battlefield, and a war-addict at that, so his practical fighting skills were certainly not lacking.
But in front of Aki, he had no room to fight back.
Power, speed, Mana, reactions, technique — Aki crushed him in every area.
As Kokabiel tried to form another Light Spear, he was instantly blown away.
Aki hovered in mid-air without chasing, looking down at Kokabiel, who had crashed through the empty factory into ruins, and summed up what he had learned from that last strike.
