Chapter 329 Looting the Estate
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Aki nodded, glancing at the rabbit-ear girl hanging from his hand. He thought it over and decided to wake her up.
Instead of stumbling around blindly hoping for luck, he needed a guide. Besides Zolgear, Zest was the one most likely to know the Rook’s complex layout. Ras was also deeply trusted by Zolgear, but she wasn’t there—and even if she were, Zest held more of the inner secrets.
The rabbit-ear girl was Zolgear’s creation, always under mental watch and controlled by a death curse… If Aki were in Zolgear’s place, he would have trusted Zest the most too. That was probably why Ras had been sent out on a mission while Zest stayed to guard the base. Since ancient times, the one left to guard the home was always the most trusted.
A faint green [Healing magic] flowed across the rabbit-ear girl’s curvy body, wiping away most of the wounds from the lightning strike. A small ball of water followed, splashing right onto her firm, flushed face.
Hit by the cold liquid, Zest snapped awake.
Seeing Aki inches from her face, the rabbit-ear girl instinctively tried to take a defensive stance, only to realize with a start that she was still held tight.
”Who are you? Where is Master Zolgear?” Zest asked, her voice shaking with polite, fearful anxiety as she fought to stay calm.
”There. That’s him,” Aki replied, his voice flat and short.
Aki turned Zest around, showing her the broken, bloody mass. Though it was barely recognizable, Zest could see certain features that told her the dead flesh was indeed Zolgear.
The moment she knew he was dead, she found she felt surprisingly little anger or frustration—instead, a wave of relief and freedom washed over her.
The space inside the Rook was twisting more and more. Aki didn’t know if the data would survive once this place fully finished its ‘awakening.’ Time was short, and he had no energy to spare for the rabbit-ear girl’s feelings. He asked directly, “Do you know where Zolgear hid the valuable things?”
”Ah?” Zest replied, still lost in the shock of Zolgear’s death, her voice soft and polite. “You should leave quickly. This place is about to…”
”I know it’s about to turn into a monster. We’re standing in its gut right now,” Aki cut in, his tone matter-of-fact. “So, is there a place where Zolgear keeps his [magic] books or data?”
The rabbit-ear girl was indeed a bit slow, but she was obedient. Realizing she had no purpose now that Zolgear was dead, and seeing that Aki had a need, she answered by instinct, “Yes.”
Aki let her go. “Lead the way.”
Suddenly free, the rabbit-ear girl nearly fell, but she caught herself in time, planting a hand on the ground to steady herself with a smooth motion.
Aki watched Zest kneeling before him and decided she would make a good ‘Knight’ class. Hm, I’ll invite her once we get back. For now, the priority is to take Zolgear’s stuff.
The looting went smoothly. Zolgear hadn’t thought much of his [magic] books and research files. In this world, martial power ruled, and his studies were just side paths he’d taken after giving up on growing stronger. With Zest’s help, Aki packed everything quickly. Having a ‘Personal Space’ was really convenient; otherwise, this would have been a huge headache.
Just as he got ready to pack up the wealth Zolgear had gathered, the Rook finally fully transformed into a massive, fleshy monster. According to Zest, the assets were still there and wouldn’t be destroyed right away, but now that the Rook had become a creature, even she couldn’t find her way around.
It was a shame, but Aki was satisfied enough. The haul from this trip had already far exceeded what he’d expected. He had successfully gotten mental control [magic] stronger than a Succubus’s, and [magic] that turns thought into telekinetic power.
Learning and mastering them might take some time—not as good as a direct [Dual Cultivation Talent Copy]—but he felt that with his strong mental power and the various [Talents] from the girls, it shouldn’t take too much energy or time.
”This is bad,” Zest murmured, her tone respectful and worried.
Zest frowned, looking at the purple-red flesh churning all around them. “To get out, we have to destroy the monster’s core. Otherwise, it will keep eating everything with life and always heal itself.”
Aki frowned too. It wasn’t that he was worried about getting out. If he could take down Zolgear, could he really be stopped by a thing like this? It was just that the gory mess was disgusting, especially since the flesh seemed to be starting to grow tentacles.
Demonic beasts and tentacles were a good fit for Devils—especially ones like Zolgear who liked to create life artificially—but in Aki’s eyes, it was unacceptable. He had seen [magical girl vs. tentacle monster] content, but it rarely fell under the ‘pure love’ type. To describe it, the tentacles were basically the ‘Yellow-haired Punk’ of the situation.
The stress response kicked in again. Aki didn’t plan to slack off; it was better to destroy this thing as soon as possible.
”Hold onto me,” Aki ordered.
Six distinct, layered wings appeared behind his back. The jet-black teardrop mark under his eye added a bit of [Charm Talent] to his handsome face.
The tan-skinned rabbit-ear girl was shaken by the sudden burst of Aki’s power and dazedly wrapped her arms around him. Aki hadn’t expected Zest to be so obedient—he hadn’t even had the chance to use the [Sacred Gear’s] ‘Balance Breaker’ mode yet.
Whatever, that works.
He sensed the point closest to the outside world and punched a tunnel straight through the creature’s belly. When he came out and looked down from the sky, he finally understood just how huge the creature was.
The Rook had originally been twenty or thirty meters tall, including its underground part. Now that it had turned into a monster and eaten several energy-rich things, its size had grown even bigger. The largest monster Aki had fought before was the one made by the Broom-head Devil, but this one was not only bigger, its power level was much higher.
Finding the core and destroying it was the best way to deal with a giant monster like this. However, he didn’t want to spend another second in that disgusting place. He would rather put in more effort to deliver a deadly blow from the outside.
He let go of Zest’s slender waist, pretending not to notice the pink flush under her tan skin, and told her to leave first.
”Teleport out. Go to the Human World, wait for me at Kuoh Academy,” Aki directed.
Zest nodded obediently. She started to leave, then stopped, wondering why she was following Aki’s orders so easily.
Aki glanced at her. “What is it? Is something wrong?”
”No… nothing,” Zest replied, her head bowed low.
”Then go,” Aki said, his voice impatient. To deal with this huge monster, Aki planned to use a long-range [magic] attack he hadn’t used in a long time—he would destroy the entire space along with it. He could have gone through the trouble of protecting Zest, but since there was an easier way, why make things hard for himself?
As for Zest running away—if she did, so be it. He could count it as a small test. He liked the obedient, docile rabbit-ear girl, even if she was a bit slow. But he wouldn’t force it. Zest didn’t have any [Talent], potential, or raw power that Aki really needed.
[Dragoner! Endless Sky-Thunder, stand upon my left hand.]
[My blood oath, Thunder Spirit! Sky-er! …]
Once Zest had left, Aki amplified his power tenfold using the ‘Balance Breaker’ mode and began to chant silently.
Blue [Magic circles] spread across the sky and ground, covering more than half the area. The surging [magic] waves made the mindless monster instinctively uneasy. Its huge body, like a mountain of flesh, writhed constantly in a pointless attempt to escape the range of the [Magic circles].
Aki glanced at how fast it was moving and stopped worrying. At this rate, it couldn’t escape the blast radius. Originally, he had wanted to destroy the whole dimension, but pulling off an attack that big in one strike was still a bit hard for him.
Destroying a country and destroying an entire dimension were not the same thing. Of course, he meant island nations like Japan. If it were a bigger country—the United States, for example—even without anyone blocking him, a ‘Super Demon King’ could not destroy it in one strike.
Still, after this attack, this dimension would be basically broken. The powerful strike would make the space very unstable. It might slowly stabilize over time, or it might collapse at any moment, creating a space storm for the rest of the world. Before it fully stabilized, no one would be able to use this space—at most, they could take a quick look before running away.
Thick, violent bolts of lightning fell from the sky. They were not only filled with [Lightning Flash], which works against dark-attribute beings, but also carried an endless aura of destruction. After fusing the special [abilities] of Himejima Akeno and Rias, the power had gone up a full grade.
Even Aki couldn’t help but gasp at the sight. It was no wonder Rias and Himejima Akeno could fight above their level when using their fusion technique; this destructive power was just unfair.
